UK chart data is now in for the week ending 18th January, revealing that the good old 3DS has had a pretty cracking week in the country.
The biggest talking point here is WarioWare Gold, which has managed to climb all the way up to fifth position out of absolutely nowhere. According to GamesIndustry.biz, the game was apparently in 827th place the week before so that's quite the jump.
Three Yo-Kai Watch 3DS games also find themselves in 8th, 12th and 13th, and Metroid Prime: Federation Force is at 26th, while Switch newcomer Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE Encore debuts in 17th place. The reason for this sudden, strange success for 3DS titles is all thanks to Argos, a UK retailer which heavily slashed the prices of the games mentioned above last week.
Here's a look at this week's top ten all formats chart:
Last Week | This Week | |
---|---|---|
1 | New | Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot |
2 | 2 | Call of Duty: Modern Warfare |
3 | 3 | FIFA 20 |
1 | 4 | Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order |
827 | 5 | WarioWare Gold |
4 | 6 | Grand Theft Auto V |
5 | 7 | Luigi's Mansion 3 |
Re-Entry | 8 | Yo-Kai Watch |
7 | 9 | Just Dance 2020 |
17 | 10 | Minecraft |

It shocks me that this game made such a huge leap in the charts. I wonder why
That's what a really good sale will do you for.
In other news: Gamefreaks Town is being published on PS4. Retail and digital. Don’t know why Nintendolife has not reported this yet.
Outselling the infamous GTAV
Very impressive
@BarefootBowser But it says this store had more games on sale. So why is it just this game in particular and not any of the other games not making it onto this list, it just seems like a very odd pick.
@KoekiieWoekiie Because TOWN was not a good game to begin with. I was given a review code before launch and I struggled to even get through it. The only good thing about that game was the battle system, everything else failed to land.
@patbacknitro18 try looking into it yourself to see if there actually were any other games for sale or if it was just a handful of 3DS games. me? I woke up for a cough drop. Cheers!
Damn, I wish I had realised there was a sale on earlier. Just checked and most of the games discounted are not available to me locally or via delivery... =(
Would of been good to expand my 3DS collection.
£5 for an old 3DS game or £50 for an old WiiU Port of Tokyo Mirage on Switch. Well looks like 3DS was an Easy choice for most on the GO 🙃
Glad to see Kakarot doing so well (13% above DBZ launch in the UK). JEDI/LM3 just keeps trucking.
Yo Kai Watch for £2.50! I have no interest in the game normally, but when it’s that cheap I’ll bite!
Bought it myself at that price, had tried to get a few more but most were unavailable. I hope Nintendo are paying some attention. Have always thought they should have an e-shop "fire sale" on old 3DS and Wii U games now that the systems are in decline, provided there aren't plans to re-release on switch it goes to show how many sales they can get if pricing games at the £5 mark...
@patbacknitro18
All the 3DS games mentioned in the article were on sale at Argos.
£2.49 Yo-kai Watch 1
£3.49 Yo-kai Watch 2
£5.99 WarioWare Gold
£5.99 Metroid Prime Federation Force
Very good prices to fill gaps in your collection.
@BarefootBowser I understand you since it it not “Nintendo related” but they did report on Octopath Traveler going to PC. And I guess that fall exactly in the same boat as this game.
Also like Nintendolife themselves said it. They do not only report on things Nintendo related. they report on multiple company’s like SEGA and Capcom and also random other stuff.
It's because it has the best training music https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_mFY_8ik8pM
@BarefootBowser It kinda is. Town is made by GameFreak, correct me if I'm wrong, but I've never known GameFreak to release titles on anything other than Nintendo platforms.
@KoekiieWoekiie I guess cause people were much more excited for Octopath than Town. If Daemon X Machina goes to the PS4 then maybe that’ll get reported on. Though I don’t care too much either way
This might well be the last week we see a 3DS game in the charts. Almost everywhere on the UK high street has stopped selling new 3DS / 2DS consoles within the last few weeks. Go into the likes of GAME, Smyths, supermarkets and even the Nintendo UK Online Store and there's nothing. It would seem that the Switch Lite is now the only choice for budget Nintendo gaming without going into the second-hand market or finding a rare gem somewhere.
@BarefootBowser Your reasoning sound plausible. However I’m 100% sure that if another, somewhat major Switch exclusive would go multi-platform that this website would report it.
It just seems to me that they do it only because it would seem controversial. Not when it is a small title.
Argos deals are a complete lottery of where they're holding stock. The only one I didn't have was WarioWare Gold but I couldn't get it. But Amazon were doing it for £7 so I took that instead.
Warioware Gold is the BotW of micro minigame collections.
@Muddy_4_Ever : More importantly, WarioWare Gold is also the BotW of nose-picking simulators.
Poor Wario don't get no respect.
It wouldn't surprise me if this was Gold's first time in the UK top 50 let alone the top 5!
I thoroughly enjoyed Gold as much as I was thoroughly disappointed with it. I hadn't waited all those years just to be served up the same old content again.
WarioWare Switch couldn't come soon enough. I can only imagine the ridiculous things that they will do with the Joy-Con.
@KoekiieWoekiie what?!
Didn’t Nintendo published it?
Interesting...
Between Christmas and the begin of the year I bought some of the 3DS games I was missing (including WarioWare Gold actually) as the sales seemed a good chance to get some of the gems I was still missing in my collection.
Glad to see I'm not the only one still thinking about that wonderful little console that is the 3DS ♥
(Even if honestly... Those deals are so good... none of the games I bought were that much discounted XD;;; ).
Expect this to be the last week a 3DS game ever charts in the UK Top 40 ever again.
DB Kakarot and TMS#FE seem to have done well.
Some great deals at Argos. I got wario gold, federation force and Mario sport mix all for 5.99 each
WAHAHAHAHA! WAAAAARIO!
@BarefootBowser interesting, never knew that. Will check them out
Nice, I just bought two of the Yo-kai games, it would be rude not to at that price.
Good game, and obviously it has legs if it gets to #5 in Nintendo’s toughest region on a dead system to boot. All the more reason for a Warioware character to be in Fighter Pass 2.
picking up my copy of wario ware tonight. got the 2 versions of yokai watch 2 for 3.50 last week
17th place for Tokyo Mirage Sessions seems bad, hopefully it does better in NA
It was also going for like £7 on Amazon
Dragon Ball Z Kakarot is tons of fun shame it's not on Switch but oh well
Waaaah ha ha ha haaaa! Wah-tastic!
Why though. Must be a huge discount
I missed out on some of the best bargains in this Argos sale but i did manage to get the following from them yesterday -
WarioWare Gold for £5.99
Captain Toad for £12.99
Poochy/Yoshi's Woolly World for £12.99
Yokai Watch Blasters for £19.99
So not bad but i'd have loved to get Dragon Quest VIII for £2.50 lol but i'm happy with what i did manage to get hold of
Two questions...
Would these games work on a US 3ds? and how would i get them to ship to the states. I have both Wario and metroid fed force on my want list.
@noodlecade No
@dougphisig
TMS on Switch sold better than the Wii U version at launch, but numbers weren't very good to begin with. Sales should be better in other regions where JRPGs are more popular, but it is clear that TMS will always remain a small niche.
Well, if you missed out, head over to eBay where there's hundreds of them, still with the Argos stickers at double / triple the prices....
@noodlecade Argos won't even ship to various places in the UK, let alone outside the British Isles. You're best bet would be eBay, but don't forget, the 3DS is region locked so you would need to buy US copies. ^_^
I like how people are actually caring about town here, they must have their game freak and/or toby fox worshipping goggles on, town is garbage, plain and simple
Nice, shame i didnt know earlier, but have reserved warioware, federation force, yo-kai watch 2, fire emblem warriors and fire emblem fates.
£29 and a 6% discount for using my love2shop card from "smartspend" through my work, job done! very happy camper!
Managed to nab Warioware, Yo-kai Watch and Fire Emblem Warriors.
