This weekend at EVO Japan 2020, SNK released a trailer for the second Samurai Shodown season pass. Yep – even though it's still not available here in the west on Nintendo's hybrid platform, it's already up to its second lot of downloadable content.
The brief clip shows off the previously confirmed character Mini Majikina and also reveals Sogetsu Kazama and Iroha. A fourth mystery fighter was teased as well. See for yourself below:
In somewhat related news, Bandai Namco announced the Samurai Shodown lead Haohmaru would appear as a DLC character in the second season pass of Soulcalibur VI.

the fact they're adding iroha, the dream match fanservice character, over so many characters who actually deserve it is insane, but the other two choices rock
Ordered in Japan eshop, awesome game
Mina is an amazing archer for someone with no depth perception.
Nice! Looking forward to the game!
Looking forward to this game, hope to receive more fighting games like this and the upcoming guilty gear on the switch.
Iroha is worth $60 all on her own
@BulbasaurusRex and amazingly unscathed for someone with no... clothes on pretty much.
@somebread For what its worth, one of those rocking choices seems to be wearing even less clothing than Iroha is
Samurai Shodown VI (PS2) / Samurai Shodown Anthology (Wii) was what Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is, by having a complete fighting roster where everyone ever was playable.
The new game looks great (haven't played it yet) but it seems it's missing so many characters.
It's not the same hype level of reveal when all you get are characters that should have been in there from the beginning.
Haohmaru for Soulcalibur? Honestly, I wanted Haohmaru in Smash over Terry, but yeah, King of Fighters is the more popular SNK franchise of the two (and Terry is dope as heck, too.)
Great choices all around!
I wonder if there will be a guest from Soul Calibur sooner or later.
@BulbasaurusRex You can do a lot of things with no depth perception. I'm blind in one eye and am actually okay at archery and other things involving ballistics. NGL, it does add a little extra challenge, but it's not impossible. You learn to gauge distance using relative size.
@T7Hokage017 They don't really know for sure. I had amblyopia when I was a kid, but I also have retinal damage that isn't usually caused by amblyopia and might be the result of me running through a glass door when I was about six.
Oh yessssss 😍 I Hope they bring back Amakusa too !! Such a great Game , just the loading times Are sooooo long on Xbox one x ..
What a well-rounded cast of characters!
@cryptologous majikina has 1) actual character and 2) chample so she's alright in my book
iroha's whole character is "calls the player master" and "has booby" and the most interesting thing she has going for her, turning into a crane, she only really does in her super
They should put an epilepsy warning before the start of that trailer. Starting at :22 seconds and ending at :35, jeez! I don’t even have epilepsy, but that was messing with my head.
I have SamSho preloaded for Feb 25 with the deluxe edition, which I assume will not include season 2, but only season 1. Regardless, I am excited to get into this one.
On a side note, the other day a friend brought up Bushido Blade. Yes, yes I would like a remaster of the original.
Though I love the idea of bringing back some old characters through DLC fighter pass, it would had been nice if one of those is a new character. I mean Super Smash Bros. Ultimate had DLC fighters but all are brand new, just hope SNK doesn't go too wild with this just for older characters and add one or two new faces to the DLC cast or maybe even a guest fighter among the bunch. Would be nice to see fresh guest characters like Mai Shiranui (fan) from Fatal Fury 2, Hun-Fu (nunchuck) from Real Bout Fatal Fury, Sasuke (katana) from Ninja Masters, or Orochimaru (spear) from Kabuki Klash add something new to the weapon based fighting game.
@retro_player_22 not sure if smash ultimate is the best example considering they really couldnt add anything BUT all new characters :V
although i'd love to see some last blade characters as guests; they're even thematically appropriate
@somebread That's right I forgot that SNK also own Last Blade as well. Would be great to see a crossover between that and Samurai Shodown. The only thing is Last Blade only has two entries whereas Samurai Shodown had many so the roster of Last Blade would be outnumbered by the number Samurai Shodown characters.
I think a last blade character would be cool. I don't think they're likely to do another game in that series. I'm hoping we get a pirate themed team KOF15, Darli, B Jenet and maybe a new character.
@SKTTR Modern fighters missing a lot of characters seems to be THE way these days sadly. DoA, MK, SF and many more leave out mainstays or fan favourites for fighter passes or whatever they are. Presumably because development costs are so high and fighters are relatively niche they have to do it unless they have real mass appeal (a la Smash).
It could be worse though, you could be a Virtua Fighter fan waiting for a new installment!
@JasmineDragon You could never be an expert at it, though. Unlike some other forms of ballistics like firearms, judging the distance to the target is a lot more important in archery due to how quickly arrows lose vertical height, along with needing to account for any wind. Judging by relative size only takes you so far, and it doesn't work if the target is something with which you don't know its approximate height (nor the height of some nearby object).
So glad SNK is one of the few companies out there that hasn't gotten scared to keep producing fanservice.
Does anyone know how much single player content there is? I love fighting games but don't play online and really just enjoy working through the story mode etc.
Breath of the Sun!... (no you wouldn't get it if you were not into a particular anime/manga)
Question for fighting game fans: Are you cool with the way DLC is handled in these games? Wave after wave of fighters, sometimes totaling more in DLC than the base game? Often announced before the game is even out.
Does anyone remember when new characters were unlocked by playing games?
@Hagemaru Yeah, looking at it that way, I vastly prefer a DLC expansion to a sequel with just more characters. But it still bugs me when games announce DLC before they are even released. I suppose I am old fashioned in the sense that I feel DLC is something that comes later, after the success of the game on its own merits. But I suppose it's much easier for a company to list characters for a DLC expansion in a fighting game, than something like a story expansion for games like Fire Emblem or Xenoblade. Just deciding a list of characters to add isn't the same as programming them all, developing their moves, balancing them, etc... It probably looks much easier than it actually is.
I have physical Japanese copies of both the PS4 and Switch versions. I really need to spend more time playing this.
gotta get that sideboob in the promo
@Heavyarms55 this game has been out on the market for like a year now though. So this DLC is coming out way after release
@cptspaulding With all the rereleases and spiritual successors coming out these days, the fact there is still nothing like Bushido Blade out there somewhere hurts my head. It's to the point I'm thinking of getting into game development, and trying to kickstart one myself.
@judaspete Send me the link when you do
@Heavyarms55
I like the way they handled it in Samurai Shodown. People who bought it early got the first season pass for free. I enjoy the game so I'll pay for some extra characters. I prefer games that update their rosters, rather than release a new game every two years. Works out cheaper. SamSho also added a character every month, which was nice. I'm not a big fan of the way dragon ball, smash bros and mortal kombat purposefully drag them out to cover an entire year.
@FineLerv
The single player mode is pretty basic. Each character has an arcade mode ending but that's about it. It's all about the multiplayer in this one. It's a game that really rewards predicting what your opponent is going to do. Predicting what a CPU is going to do, isn't that fun. If you want a fighter with lots of single player stuff, your best bet is Mortal Kombat 11
I thought Sogetsu was a girl for a second. My bad my bad.
@Wargoose Thanks, matey. I didn't realise how far fighting games had come with single player content until I played Dragon Ball Fighterz. Even though its a little artificially bloated, I appreciate there always being something for me to do.
Mama Mia, the m-m-m-mammories.!!!
@Heavyarms55
It's not always going to be the case that you'd get the same kind of content by playing games ten+ years ago as you would by paying for them now. That might be true with some developers, but I'm in no way ignorant to the fact that game assets cost money to make, game developers are running a business and they need to keep the lights on, and I'm okay with market segmentation as a general practice.
As a consumer, I think the games industry has trended overall toward more and better quality for the player. Even in the realm of DLC releases, predatory developers are an exception, not the norm. Would I like to be able to get four extra characters just by beating arcade mode with the existing roster? Yeah. Do I feel ripped off as a consumer because I was only able to unlock a lousy sound test mode or a single picture in gallery mode instead, and I need to pay actual money for the fighter? Eh. Not really. A game doesn't need more than 8 playable (12 total) fighters to be more content rich than the original version of street fighter 2, which cost a lot of money when it was released for the SNES.
There are limits. Street Fighter 5 had a bad launch, but my solution for that was to not buy Street Fighter 5 until after the release of arcade edition, at which point my $40 got me quite a lot more content (28 characters and a story mode) than $60 at launch would have done (16 characters).
That said, I very strongly dislike that the FGC has become so much about preorder hype culture and always looking for the next hot new DLC.
@Mando44646 it's been on the market for about 7 months.
??? DLC character is surely Banjo Kazooie
