Trials of Mana – a remake of the legendary Super Famicom RPG Seiken Densetsu 3 – is due to hit Switch early next year, and a fresh character trailer has just been released to build up a bit of hype during the festive period.
As the first 'Character Spotlight Trailer', this new footage gives us a glimpse of the game's two main heroes: the swordsman Duran from the Kingdom of Valsena and Princess Angela from Altena. A key feature of the game is the ability to play as multiple characters and experience different storylines, and this trailer does a good job of showing off how Square Enix has fleshed out the characters for this updated version.
If you're keen for more, then you'll be pleased to learn that this is the first of a series of spotlights on the cast of the game. The four other playable heroes – Hawkeye, Riesz, Kevin and Charlotte – will be getting their own trailers soon.
Trials of Mana launches on April 24th, 2020.

Hello Duran and Angela.
No joke, I'm more excited for this remake than the Resident Evil 3 and Final Fantasy VII remake. This style of remake is what Square Enix should had done with Adventures of Mana and the Secret of Mana remake. Hopefully if they ever decided to remake Sword of Mana, Legend of Mana, or Secret of Evermore that they follow this route.
oh boiiii, this game should be called "Lack of Mana"...lol i sure hope you gain magic skills later on, a game without magic is usually too dull for me to continue to play.
I'm looking forward to this one. Though in all fairness, I feel like I should play the original via Collection of Mana first in order to fully appreciate the changes.
@Tyranexx The original holds up very well. I'm a bit disappointed that the original has local co-op and the remake doesn't though... Especially since the series has had co-op in almost every game since Secret of Mana 2.
Helloooooooo
@Travisemo007
You clearly didn't watch the trailer or play the original...
What is the MP bar there for if not for magic skills...
@Travisemo007
There's plenty of magic but how much depends on what classes you pick in the game. Some class changes are more focussed on melee fighting.
Totally forgot I pre ordered this one
@retro_player_22 Not to mention Illusion of Time and Terranigma!
I saw this video like a week ago lol, but nevertheless, it´s always good to see this game again. One of my most anticipated games of 2020!
The way the title and article are worded makes it sound like Duran and Angela are the only main characters.
I believe they presented those two together for reasons players of the original will know (avoiding mild spoilers here) and they will probably band Hawkeye with Riesz, Charlotte with Kevin.
"Development Footage. Subject to Change."
In other words, PS4 Pro footage. The Switch version will clunk along at 15-22 FPS.
still undecided weather to get this game when its out never played a Mana game
@Wilforce I'd forgotten about that. Seems odd that they won't have it this time around. It's not a deal breaker for me, but all the same it'd be nice to have.
I hope there are at least 6 save slots this time so we won't have to delete any of them to experience all the characters' stories.
@AllieKitsune lol you funny but yeah third party switch games with good graphics should wait and view test runs
@Travisemo007 to join the "beat a dead horse bandwagon"... there is magic in this game. As soon as you meet the first magic thing, you get magic. It's like an hour into the game.
@MrVariant Xenon Racer should have taught everybody to be gun-shy.
Oh man i need this game.
@AllieKitsune, to be fair I don't think I've heard anything bad about any of Square's games on Switch so far, from a performance standpoint at least.
True, they've mostly released HD remasters of past gen ports, but I don't think there were any particular issues with World of Final Fantasy, DQB, & DQB2, and am well aware of how fantastic they got DQXI to run, in terms of current gen releases.
That just leaves DQH I&II as the notable SE game with performace issues, but it was a launch game and hasn't even left Japan.
@DaniPoo i did watch the trailer before posting that. i didnt see any magic lol. However i didnt play the Original, so that much is true. i cant vouch that far.
@Wilforce @Damo Can everyone just stop using Secret of Mana as the series name? That was a single game in the "Mana" series, the second one, no less (Trials being third), and every game in the series is titled uniquely without any obvious subsequels (i.e. there's no Secret of Mana 2, etc).
P.S. I know that sounds crabby, but it's a pet-peeve, especially when a news author that posts something the entire world reads makes the mistake.
@Kilroy In using 2, I meant to refer to it as the second part of the trilogy while also referring to future games in the world of Mana. SE's choice to rename the games for Western release is smart in a commercial sense, but not so much for lore and collective discussions where people may not be aware of the first game being named something different in the West.
Most hype game of 2020, right alongside Xenoblade Chronicles HD.
FFVIIR is still 5 years away from releasing as far as I’m concerned. The year exclusivity = next gen Xbox release = next gen ports + part 2 next gen = multiplatform complete edition next gen = may even release on Switch 2... I’ll wait.
One must have a healthy appreciation for the classics.
@Wilforce I get it, but the naming convention can be pretty confusing that way too, though. Saying "Secret of Mana 2" may be interpreted as Secret of Mana or Trials, the latter being thought of if you've never played Secret or knew it had co-op.
What SE maybe should've done was title the games in English as follows, similar to how they title the DQ games:
The Mana Sword I: The Adventure
The Mana Sword II: The Secret
etc.
Really looking forward to this and the Xenoblade Chronicles Remaster.
@Quarth
Me too, i'm so hyped about those two games!
@Kilroy Secret of Mana is the most popular entry in the series, and when the third game was rumoured to be coming to the west, it was reported as being Secret of Mana 2. I know exactly what you're saying, but for a lot of people, SoM is the only game they've played in the franchise, and is certainly the most famous.
@Damo Bit odd that you've written this as if Collection of Mana hasn't happened though. Especially when you reviewed it!
@Ridley Collection of Mana only came out this year. I've considered Seiken Densetsu 3 to be Secret of Mana 2 for almost 30 years. Old habits die hard, perhaps?
@Damo News should be written as accurate, not catering to what could have been. Saying "SoM 2 by another name" is ambiguous, but implies it's official, especially when the news says it. Yes, it was originally planned as SoM 2 in the 90's, but that never released; it was renamed to Trials. That would be like if I said, "Star Fox Adventures is coming to Switch (tagline: Dinosaur Planet by another name).
Yes, SoM was very popular and the only Mana game a lot of people played back then, but it was also known that Final Fantasy Adventure was SD1 and SoM was SD2. Plenty of people had Game Boys and that game was quite impressive for its day.
I get the old habits, though (in a non-professional sense). I still say SF and USF in Crash Team Racing even though it's been recently(?) revealed that it's Red and Blue Fire.
(including) @Ridley
@Damo Sure, I'm just surprised that there's nothing indicating that people can play the original, by whichever name, right now.
