When Nintendo launched the SNES digital library on the Switch in September, it also revealed that additional titles would no longer appear on a monthly basis. Since then, there have been no game updates to the service, and the last time we received an update for the NES digital library was in August.
You'd be forgiven for thinking these services have been abandoned, but that's obviously not the case, as the Nintendo of America Twitter account recently reminded its followers to go and check out F-Zero and the other games available right now on the Switch Online SNES app:
Yep, so if you haven't played through this classic already, go and check it out by signing up for the Nintendo Switch Online service. As you can probably imagine, this tweet didn't go down well with the masses. The fact Nintendo went with F-Zero to promote the service only added fuel to the fire.
In case you missed it, be sure to check out our talking point from last week about this same topic.

An update would be appreciated! It's been so long
Donkey Kong Country trilogy please!
Nintendo is just trolling us at this point.
fzero hd port confirmed
Pretty tough coming from a company who's too stupid to add more games.
“ You'd be forgiven for thinking these services have been abandoned...” It’s only been 3 months
The new monthly update is simply a reminder of the games already available.
I wish they'd simply copy and paste the Wii virtual console over. That was the pinnacle of Nintendo's online services.
I wanna play as the Blue Falcon in smash. I want giant buff arms and legs to burst out of the vehicle and chokehold the opponents
Nintendo literally exits in their own little bubble. It's quite boggling when you think about it. But I guess in some way, we all know that because we're all here
Nintendo: “Remember our SNES game service? Yeah, we didn’t either. But we still want your money tho. Sooooooo... F-Zero? What do you mean it’s already been on there for 3 months?”
Even the $15 Nintendo Online Black Friday deal at Target didn't convince me to pay money for this nonsense.
They remind users that there is no new fzero since the GameCube? That’s what i read
Everyone gettin mad about Nes and Snes lack of updates. Thats understandable, I totally get it, but I cant help laughing with my large collection of actual cartridges and working consoles
Donkey, Diddy and K. Rool wants to be in the SNES Online, Nintendo
No updates to the mediocre online, just Nintendo reminding us that they want our money.
I mainly just use the service for online play. I even forget there is NES and SNES games on Switch. The Mini systems do just fine for me.
I want the DKC trilogy.
I’m always subbed to the online because who on earth would want to forfeit playing Switch games online and the security of cloud saves (and the practical functionality for bouncing between systems without using the transfer tool) and a nice SNES library just to pocket $20 once a year. I need my cloud saves. Bounce back and forth between Switch and Switch Lite every single day. And it ensures I don’t lose all my saves, as I almost did when my Vita memory card corrupted. I don’t play around when it comes to my save data. I pay far more to insure things I care about far less than my saves.
I keep getting ads for the SNES app on FB and YouTube and it hurts, I appreciate the games on there but 3 months with not even any announcements yet they have the gall to advertise it? :-/
I played F-Zero once, got bored, and turned it off. My online subscription is for a year, as I was excited to play SNES games (having missed the system in my youth), but there’s really nothing holding my interest. Unless something newer is added, my subscription will remain unused
Nintendo being Nintendo. Another day in the office.
I have nothing constructive to say on this topic.
On another note, I think the Nintendo Direct game Skellboy releases Decembe 6, Friday for USA(possibly the same for other wonderful regions?) The link takes you to the trailer from the Direct.

Hopefully next update will be a solid 10 or 20 games. I ran through Zelda ALttP before Link’s Awakening came out, and then I helped a friend through Kirby 3. That was it. Haven’t even found myself dying to play Demons Crest and Super Metroid. Maybe I played all this way too much on Wii U and 3DS over the years. I personally find myself more interested in the newer games. I actually didn’t realize three months passed since it launched, until NintendoLife said something. Between work and newer games, I just barely dive into anything retro anymore. If I was someone who only has a few games and mainly played retro, bought into the service just for it, I’d probably be very frustrated by now.
If there’s anything to complain about the Switch thus far, it’s the terrible way Nintendo has handled its classic content!! This whole concept is just pitiful!! Just baffling!!
No update for months now which is inexcusable and still we are limited to 2 measly consoles!! NO purchase option on these games doesn’t help!! And not for nothing, but what a bunch of BS right here with Nintendo encouraging us to play F-Zero in a greedy attempt to nab a truckload of new subs what with the Switch being a red hot Black Friday item!! Greedy Nintendo!! 😡
This is why you entitled brats deserve for your whining and crying every time a new NES game was announced for the service. And now you want them? You have ZERO right to complaint. You are getting what you deserve.
Thanks a lot.
Cute.
Poor captain falcons never gonna get a new game
I started playing the the bottom left SNES game and when I finish it I move on to the one beside. Currently I am on Starfox and F-Zero is the top right. If I play and finish that before an update happens I will be very concerned.
I think we’ll get an announcement for a new f-zero game at the Game Awards.
That would be a good audience for a ‘Cool’ game. And Nintendo is testing the water with this tweet.
@Bondi_Surfer I no a lot of people including myself that did just that. Purchased switch online, was excited for the snes games. Played a few for a few minutes.. never touched them again.. same as I did for the nes games.
@joey302 Nintendo tells Sony and Microsoft to hold my beer when it comes to greed. This has been known since forever
I don't find NES and SNES titles enticing as I already own the Mini consoles. Now if they added N64 I'd be totally invested!
Well I mean, if anyone wants to get destroyed- .... I mean, to play me in Kirby's Dream Course versus mode, hmu I'm down ;p
Let's face it. Nintendo just doesn't give a hoot about the NES/SNES Online services anymore.
I can only hope the lack of EarthBound and Beginnings is a sign that they're definitely going to release a M🌍THER Trilogy Collection soon and not them just forgetting about them like the rest of the SNES games they rereleased before but didn't put here.
Nintendo really seem out of touch with their user base a lot of the time...
Ahhh @nintendolife - you really know how to rattle them with a headline. Let the clicks roll on in...
@Mgene15 yeah, you’d think with the deepest library of all video game companies they’d be a little bit more liberal with their old games, lol. At least throw Goemon in there! Anyway, it’s Nintendo after all...we need to beg them just for the privilege to buy their games, let alone have them give them to us for free!
I’m surprised Nintendo are being so laissez faire about the Switch Online bonuses, it’s around this time of year people’s subscriptions will be due for renewal so some more games might be enough to persuade some people to re-up.
Pretty please can we have Axelay and Gradius III, Nintendo?
There are 20 SNES games available already, many of them stone cold classics. If you have beat them all already in 3 months then I suggest you play games too much and need to find other activities to partake in.
To be fair, one of the main reasons my brother wanted to buy my old switch was the SNES service...
Stop asking for old roms made by people who don't make videogames anymore and support actual developers by buying indie games. You're hurting the industry with your behavior.
I wont mind too much if the next update brings a big amount of games. but if they add 1 or 2 theres gonna be even more uproar! the demand for this type of service is clearly there I just dont understand why nintendo insists on dragging out the content so slowly
This is all well and good, but when are we going to be able to order the SNES controllers again?
@SBandy These are Very Serious Gamers™. They eat, sleep and live games. Zero downtime. Those 20 games were probably played to completion in a week. It's just not good enough. Not counting all the other games on other consoles they're playing through.
Is anyone else thinking it’s just a tweet?! Some massive overreactions here.
@glaemay
If an Indy game is threatened by a 30 year old game by comparison then it's not worth the asking price.
A few more SNES games would make a lovely Christmas present...
@joey302 Sheesh, kid. Get a grip.
An update could be coming. Or Nintendo is trying to flog a joke of a service.
Variety is the spice of life. But on that same note if something isn't to your taste you aren't going to consume it. I don't play racing games (at least not Mario Kart of Race fx) but I do enjoy certain platformers and RPGs but not all of them . Seriously have the option to buy and open the floodgates on all titles that we can get!
Honestly the snes satellaview from the 90's is more advanced then this, would be awesome if Nintendo brought it back wishful thinking I know translated it to the west, basically have earthbound hub/rpg town, with the snes satellaview only games many we still don't have roms to https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vzeZDaiiBn4
again Im just wishing here, shame Nintendo can't even do anything creative with it's Online service
at this point my GPD Win 2 is getting more playtime then my Switch
How about announcing a new F-Zero. That's what everyone wants.
This time next year we'll have the next gen, with better services and a commitment to backwards compatibility.
Sony are going to be leveraging their position by giving Ps4 player no reason to go elsewhere. Giving them full access to their current library, access to a new generation, and continued access to the accounts, friends, and communities they've built up around the PS4. It will be the same deal with Xbox, only on a smaller scale, as the console didn't sell as well.
This means that Nintendo have less than a year to cement the Switch as a go to console. It has an install base advantage, and the hybrid design advantage, but that's it. As far as accounts, features, services, discounts, VC, and even the main library of games, it will be dwarfed by the other two. And it could be the start of the console's decline.
@KitChan worst opinion I have seen for a while. The SNES one is great.
I’ve had my money’s worth from Tetris99 alone and everything else is just a bonus but there’s still loads of SNES games I’d love....Donkey Kong Country, Street Fighter 2, Ninja Warriors, Sunset Riders, Turtles In Time, Parodius, Buster Busts Loose, Pocky & Rocky 2, Super Double Dragon....the list of great SNES games is just endless.
I think everyone should chill. Until MS and Nintendo come together on Battletoads I am neutral.
I love the caption on this story! The service update we've needed to VC/Online for years has been a few of these bad boys: https://youtu.be/I9nxBJBEdzo
I wish there were virtual console games to buy in addition to the free ones available.
Donkey Kong Country games would make my day. Even the recent DKC games don't match the amazing music on the SNES versions.
I have a difficult time getting past the dated graphics of NES/SNES titles. They were fun when they came out, but I mainly paid for the online services so, while new releases might be interesting, if Im being perfectly honest I probably wont be playing anyway.
I’d love DKC soon... but OMG I’ve put serious hours in to Tetris 99 so I can’t complain! It was worth signing up for year two just to enjoy Yoshi’s Island again! Donkey Kong Country and Killer Instinct... that would be awesome.
I remind Nintendo to make a new F-Zero
I'm starting to think SNES Online is some sort of monkey's paw wish. yeah we got SNES games on switch but only a few and now nintendo won't add any more to either the SNES or NES online.
@Dr_Corndog get a grip on?? I’m fine 🙂
@Richnj Sony is ruining videogames value by giving games for free and treat developers like trash. This is a terrible model for the industry. All games are becoming souless blockbusters made by underpaid people who get fired the day of release.
I mean if you guys release frontmission, Kirby super star and mario RPG, then i'll look at your sevice, until then I'm only using the service to play online.
And even then I have these games on my jailbroken PSP.
@glaemay
Sony pays them to do it, you actually think these developers put their games out there for free without asking for some sort of compensation?
What about Microsoft, they do the same thing, but "hurr durr Sony bad".
This is known as shooting yourself in the foot
@glaemay
Just like any other job in the world. 40 hours (possibly more), management that only thinks of their bottom line, dumb business decisions that make no common sense whatsoever.
So at least it seems they still remember they have a snes service....
Give some more games now please.
As some have suspected, I think this is a bit of trolling on Nintendo's part and may possibly be hinting at some kind of F-Zero related reveal soon.
I only have Nintendo online service because it was free with my Amazon Prime/Twitch Prime. If it hadn't been for that deal I would not be paying for it. I have a better line up on my SNES and NES classic at this point, and hardly use online games.
@Big-Pepsi lol do you have any evidence developers are compensated when Sony pressure them to give their games for free? Problem is psn subscribers pay for it but then they don't buy indie games they just wait the "free game". I don't get why Sony is a sacred cow these day. They dominate the market with an iron fist while the japanese industry is doing badly and they don't move a finger to help them they just crush them with their big budget western blockbusters. Sony is far from perfect and deserve criticism too like Nintendo and Microsoft.
Great to see the absence of Nintendo defenders on this thread. Just because one can see a glaring fault doesn't make one less of a Nintendo fan.
@glaemay
Source 1:
https://www.vg247.com/2013/10/03/sony-confirms-they-pay-devs-cash-to-include-their-games-in-ps/
Here's a indepth explanation from source 2 from a Redditor who knows their stuff in the PS plus community named "okthiswillbemymain":
https://www.reddit.com/r/PlayStationPlus/comments/9zpwjw/how_does_ps_work_for_publishers_and_sony/
"Sony and Ubisoft estimate that Trials Fusion will earn another $800,000 in sales on PS4 between now and the end of the system. After Sony's cut, that will be about $600,000 for Ubisoft
Sony offers Ubisoft $500,000 to put Trials Fusion on PS Plus.
Ubisoft accept, knowing that they will get secondary sales in terms of the 6 DLC packs. Sony also estimate that sales of Trials Fusion post PS Plus won't plummet completely but drop by 80%.
Sony says they have 34.2 million PS Plus subscribers. That includes countries where PS Plus is a lot cheaper, but if we said that an average they pay $25 a year, that gives Sony $855 million a year from PS Plus sales, and if that was all used to pay for PS Plus games, it would give Sony $71 million a month to give to developers. At $30 on average a year, that's $1bn a year from PS Plus"
You don't need evidence for something that big as well, If Sony was forcing/pressuring developers to put games on their systems for free, then that would be on major news outlets everywhere and developers aren't that stupid/ Scared, if Sony was really that "influential" then Halo and Gears of War would have been on a PlayStation years ago.
Also no gaming company is perfect, who the hell thinks Sony is the sacred cow of Gaming? All people have done was moan about crossplay, no backwards compatibility, and censorship, they get absolutely criticized by people because of the poor choices they make, just as much a Nintendo and Microsoft. So I don't know where in the hell you got "Sony is the sacred cow these days".
@Big-Pepsi So Sony make billions but they give like half a million to devs to pressure them to give away their games to million people. Yeah that totally not devaluate videogames and developers work. Totally worth it. Sony isn't taking all the profits of the market at all lol. If Nintendo did that it would be everywhere on the news and nintendo would be pictured as a greedy company and it would totally be deserved.
@glaemay yeah, playstations are my least favourite consoles. I was just acknowledging the fact they sell extremely well, and the Ps4 sold extremely well, and if Sony is planning on using that to leverage sales and retaining consumers, it will be a harder fight against them.
I'm not worshipping Sony and their practices
@glaemay
It's the consumers fault Sony is the way it is now. I stopped supporting Sony when they started to censor. Has everyone else done so Sony would've been knocked down a peg and have to reevaluate its position. But the biggest majority couldn't bear to be without their online play and so forth and here we are.
I didn't really get into the series until F-Zero X. I really like ramming into other vehicles.
The NES and SNES apps are cool features, but I wish Nintendo would also make these games "buyable" so I could keep playing the ones I want without a membership.
OMG new F Zero incoming....
This is getting even more ridiculous than the 3-games-a-month drip feed everyone thought was the worst.
I love this service. Played some absolute classics with plenty left to play. No complaints here.
@stvnorman Yeah, the problem with giving people something for free is they immediately feel entitled to more, and then it's somehow your fault for not giving them more of something you didn't have to give them in the first place. The comments that typically fill these articles are proof of that.
(Yes, I realize the NES and SNES Online games technically aren't free, if you want to be pedantic. But they might as well be.)
@aznable You misspelled Game Boy Advance.
@thatawesomedude my zing was zingier
@Dr_Corndog King Crimson!
@aznable If by zingier, you mean inaccurate, then I agree.
@thatawesomedude all of the best jokes are inaccurate.
This tweet could've been handled better like if it did the tips thing on a weekly/daily basis on the Twitter or (more peferably) the Switch News board but that could been done a long time ago like not in the middle of a drought. No problem with tips but the timing (and probably the place) of how this is done is way off.
@Dr_Corndog and all that crying we witnessed was over nothing in the end.
@glaemay
I'm just absolutlety dumbfounded at how you keep bringing up how Nintendo would be viewed in a negative way, litterally the only thing people complain about is the online and the stick drift, and even with that the Switch is killing it across the board, outsold the Xbox one and PS3, outsold the PS4 in Japan, and has had more anticipated releases than other games on Xbox one and PS4, how the hell would they view Nintendo as greedy for offering a free game? Sony and Microsoft spends over a billion a year to these developers, if it was scummy of them to do that, developers would obviously not accept that.
Why are you trying to downplay the Switch and Nintendo?
@Big-Pepsi Lol where did you see Sony spend a billion a year to developers to give away their games? With half a million per games and 2 games per month on average it's more like 12 millions spent for a billion of profits. Imagine if Nintendo did that. Taking 90% of potential profits of the indie market on switch with a subscription system. They would immediatly get called out by the industry. We don't see criticism about Sony and Microsoft about that because they are control freak giant megacorp who control large part of the industry unlike Nintendo so criticizing them is asking for big troubles. But that subscription servces for "free games" is a scam that make billion of profits for the big companies and much less for actual developers. You want to play a game? Then buy and support it and don't wait a big company deciding for you what to play.
Nintentroll - how dare they taunt and tease us like this
Mentioning it by name gives me the they are up to something thing and want people to check it out that haven't.
It's the let's see how many people are actually playing it thing. Maybe a new F-Zero is coming.
