Horizon Chase Turbo is receiving a brand new slice of DLC on Nintendo Switch and other platforms today, as the 'Rookie Series' powerslides its way into the game for free.
As the name suggests, this new DLC is aimed at those who are particularly feeling the heat on the track, with younger and inexperienced racers being taught the basics in "a welcoming environment where they can evolve at their own pace".
There are no leaderboards or collectables to speak of here, with pure racing being at the heart of the new mode. It offers automatic upgrades as you progress through the campaign and players can also choose from four classic cars from the base game, unlocking new tracks by finishing each available race.
ROOKIE SERIES MAIN FEATURES
- A brand new Rookie car
- 24 selected races from the World Tour Mode (2 races per location)
- 12 cars racing in each track with a less aggressive AI (World Tour has 20 cars in each race)
- No leaderboards, collectible coins nor fuel management
- Finishing a race in any position unlocks the next track
- By finishing every race, the player gets a Golden Driver’s License
When you reach the end of Rookie Series, you’ll unlock a special Golden Driver’s License, so there's even an incentive for anyone who likes to 100% complete everything they touch.

Wonderful game, but I didn't find it especially difficult so I'm surprised by this new mode, maybe I'm just better at video games that i think.
Not that this mode hurts anything, it's a welcome addition.
This is good for my 8YO daughter, who loves the game but can't go past California
Early races are already easy enough to get in first and there are other racing games in need of an easy mode but hey more free dlc is always good. Horizon Chase has always been the best at arcade racing.
Fantastic game! I have already completed it (all the normal stages with 100%) but it's good for supporting the game with free dlc!
Love this game but was hoping for something different to this.
Amazing game!! I haven't played it in a couple of months but will certainly try this dlc out... Thank you Aquiris Game Studio!!
I enjoy this game, but it can get pretty tough for me, especially the night stages. I hope one day they include a free drive mode where you can putter along any of the tracks without AI opponents and lap limits, so I can experience the beautiful environments without hassle.
The Shovel Knight of racing games!
Nice. I'll definitely check this out because the rookie car looks cool as heck.
I've always hated having to hit gas tanks to keep going. There are some "challenges" that games don't need.
Love this game, so happy there is more content available. Was going to play Pokemon when I got home but will be acing this instead
@geox30 I like your comment, and find it ironic — as Horizon Chase seems like one of the few games where Shovel Knight hasn’t made a cameo
@sfb Shovel Knightrider DLC coming soon.
They did an amazing job with this update, if anything the game seems to take up less space than it did before! Truly remarkable, it would be nice if more updates worked out like this. Gotta love that price of free as well.
@tendonerd Fast RMX is the first game that comes to mind when I think of a racing game that could really use an easy mode.
@Stocksy good one! I watched Knight Rider back in the day.
FYI - Believe it or not, we’ve already seen Shovel Knight riding a vehicle — he is an unlockable character in Road Redemption. I was pretty surprised when he popped up there
Clicked to download the free DLC, bought the paid Summer Vibes DLC too (it was only a couple of quid). Haven't played the free DLC, but Summer Vibes is fantastic!
This was the perfect thing to play with my brothers over thanksgiving break, as they had never played the game before, so it was a good introduction and meant we could all beat the AIs
