Pearl and Team Chaos might have won the final Splatfest, but that doesn't mean Splatoon 2 is completely doomed. Following on from the game's previous update at the end of July, Nintendo has now released Version 5.0.1.
As you can see, it's basically a lot of fixes. One other change is limiting play for players who experience frequent connection errors in the Ranked Battle match lobby. Below are the full patch notes:
Changes to Multiplayer
- Fixed an issue causing players to mistakenly move forward while in mid-air during the first swing of an Ultra Stamp when pressing and holding ZR to swing the stamp repeatedly.
- Fixed an issue allowing players to jump further than intended when jumping at a specific time while using the Ultra Stamp.
- Fixed an issue causing players with poor internet connections to not appear in the appropriate location on the screens of other players when using certain special weapons at a specific time.
- Fixed an issue in Starfish Mainstage allowing players to gain access to the opponent’s base via a specific grate when jumping while pressing and holding ZR to ink continuously with the Inkbrush or Octobrush.
- Fixed an issue in Sturgeon Shipyard allowing players to gain access to the opponent’s base via a specific grate when jumping while pressing and holding ZR to ink continuously with the Inkbrush or Octobrush.
- Fixed an issue in Manta Maria allowing players to gain access to the opponent’s base via a specific grate when jumping while pressing and holding ZR to ink continuously with the Inkbrush or Octobrush.
- Fixed an issue in Shellendorf Institute causing players to clip into the stage terrain when moving near a certain wall.
- Fixed an issue in Shellendorf Institute occurring in Rainmaker mode allowing players to clip into a specific piece of stage terrain.
- Fixed an issue in Camp Triggerfish that had previously allowed players to gain access to an Inkrail from an unintended direction by slightly adjusting the rail’s position.
- These changes fix the issue of players being able to enter areas of certain stages they should have been restricted from.
Other Changes
- Play may now be limited for players if they experience frequent connection errors while waiting for remaining players to arrive after joining a Ranked Battle match lobby.

Haven't really played in the past week since the Spooky Grand Prix started on Crash Team Racing.
I bet that article picture would be a neat user icon.
I see we still can't join up with two friends in a lobby and THEN let randoms in to fill in the rest like in Salmon Run.
So 3 friends in 1 room is still basically impossible in Turf. Good.
Then I have no desire to play.
Good! I’m glad they are noticing the clipping glitches. I hate when people do that.
I haven't played recently but I am glad they fix bugs that are found. I miss getting new maps and weapons. I was so sure they'd start bringing back maps from Splatoon 1 after they were finished with new content.
But does it resolve the fact that I still can't voice chat easily with a friend? Or easily join a game with them? Or easily do anything online related...?
I've been wondering something about this game and actually the first one too for the longest time. You know that section in the lobby where you can listen to the different songs in the game? It's like the sound test. Well some songs are missing and all you see on the menu is question marks.
How the heck do you unlock those? I never could find the answer.
@Zeldafan79 Tracks 1 through 8, 27 through 30, and 43 through 54 are available from start; 35 through 42, and 55 through 57 are unlocked by amiibo; the rest are unlocked after they have been heard in-game for the first time.
@Zimon Yes, this really irks me. I hope this is something they address in the future, or at the very least in the inevitable sequel.
@ Sikthvash
Thank you! That's been bugging me for the longest time!
updates like these have always been too specific for me to care or even notice, but i really appreciate how in depth these things can be for the peoples who do care
@PBandSmelly I miss the mini games during matchmaking too. Loved the sound test as well so you could play your favourite tunes while you're waiting.
So still cant skip the opening babble huh
@Moonlessky I think the news is mandatory to deter frustration disconnects while playing. If rebooting the game was quick & painless, people would disconnect more often. But, I agree, the mandatory news & its button pushing can be really, really annoying.
@Woomy_NNYes That's a good point, I've never thought of that. Personally I don't mind the wait at all, but I know it's the one thing you can count on getting mentioned every time there's an update
no control customization after all this time, lame...
it still sucks that they haven't added at least new things for the game at all :/ rather just smacked us with eh content all of it within a month, than just gave us like late gear -well not official nice gear, only can get that through the amiibo which is fine and all buuut i would've loved it if they would've added more gear :/ and nice new actual weapons not rehashed ones. -like, i'm glad they are there just like change the actual design of the weapons please. than another thing is the major bummer that i cannot play with my friends unless...a splatfest happens and we're teamed up together.
but sadly this game is going to die off soon..-i'm just hoping they make good content on the hopefully to come soon splatoon 3 ;-;". please make the 3rd one, i still want to play this game and yes it's my crack lol. it's a fun game, i just really would've loved new content like a regular online game would have, but i guess that's not what the creator was aiming for which sucks tbh.
@MidnightLaces What? There's tons of gear! Probably almost double that of Splatoon 1. Did you get the 22 pieces of Salmon Run gear? If not, they're rotating every single Salmon Run shift now instead of every month. Then there's the exclusive Nintendo Switch Online App gear, and variants of existing gear, that you can only claim from from Annie's Shop through the Splatoon 2 section of the App. Unfortunately, you may have to wait a while and watch the app like a hawk in order to get the gear you're missing. Don't forget Dualies and Brellas are the actual new weapons for this game. If you're just looking for new weapon models and not just re-skins that's different. Maybe in the next one.
League Battles are still going strong and they support you and a friend (and the last 2 spots are random) or you and 3 friends. No singles, unfortunately, which is why I'm stuck in regular ranked But yeah, it's using Ranked Mode stages (which are way more interesting than Turf Wars, IMO) so if you're not into that, then that's it, I guess.
@J-Plap why even make this comment if you're not going to post what the problem is? People like you are beyond stupid.
@invictus4000 no it does not! Welcome to Nintendo!
@Grant007 because it's hard to explain and I didn't want to waste time typing it out if nobody cared. Why do you care anyway? Searching for ways to annoy people that posted on a news story weeks old. I'm legitimately offended.
Yes! Thanks Nintendo!
@masterLEON Uhh...dude the content your talking about was a joke, and honestly the only interesting gear within the salmon run was like 4 or 3 gears, not much was that appealing rather just bland. It even got to point that the 'new' gear was a rehashed of the old ones in the store. The only gears that we're actually new on the game was the amiibo ones, and the japanese gears that never came to the west sadly. Also, the octo expansion as well. -What else? I noticed that some or more of that 200 gears that we got are legit the same ones from the 1st one. -So, yeah >->;;
Yeah, i'm actually hoping for actualnew weapons not rehashed or reskins of the same weapons. I loved the new sub weapon, and speacial that we got. I also spent hours on this game xD to know it better than my other games. But, yes i rather wait for the possibility of a 3rd one.
See, that's the major problem people wznt to play regular matchs with their friends not what we have now, which is sad. You unfortunately didn't realize that people love turf war as well, as much as i do. Its why i stated my comment.
@MidnightLaces That's fine if you don't like how a lot of them look or if they're not interesting, to you, but it doesn't take away from the fact that there IS a LOT of uniquely modeled gear, by the numbers (S1 gear included). Headgear then shoes have the most non-repeating in-game models. Tee Shirts, jackets and such, well not much you can do about that. In any case, I don't care what my squid/octo-kid looks like as long as I got my mains and subs in order. I use mostly Ink or Sub Savers, Run Speed or Ink Resist, maybe MPU, and Special Charge Up, all depending on the mode and weapon (Bloblobber for Turf, Sloshing Machine for ranked). So there was enough gear for me to choose something different to wear every Splatfest or whenever I felt like it. I like some of the Salmon Run gear since they get random mains. If wanted to grind for it, I could even get my Friendship Bracelet (a.k.a. bare feet) with Bomb Defense UP DX. Switch App gear was one of the first ways to get Main Power Up before it was available from the stores. And almost every piece of gear has an alternate set of Main abilities because of the App. All that gear, and the alternate sets (which you can't own both, sadly), that's a lot of choices! Of course, since they're not interesting looking, it doesn't matter, I guess :/
More weapon types would be great, though. There are way too many shooters, IMO. And Dualies and Brellas even though they're new classes to Splat 2, didn't vary that much. Lucky for me, the new Sloshers were VERY different. Explosher is a great support weapon since it pierces like a Charger and is a good painter. And my Turf War main, the Bloblobber, can paint, confuse people, and support. In Splat 3 I'd like to see something like the original Stingray, but in a standard form. Like a garden hose or shower head. As for subs, I'd like to see Toxic Mist get upgraded to a Smokescreen. Smoke won't do much damage, but it'll stay active for a long time, like 10-15 seconds, making it hard to see. If an opposing player is nearby, they could show up as a shadow, but they need to be pretty close. It could also move slowly in one direction, like Inkstorm.
The thing with Turf War is that I kinda see why it's set up like that. Turf is the basic casual mode. Even if a couple friends, of average skill, go in there together, they can potentially dominate over a room full of randoms because friends have the ability to chat privately while randoms can't chat at all. That doesn't mean every friend team-up is chatting, or even know each other well at all, but it seems to be that in order to be still be casual AND be fair to other players AND be family friendly like an E10-rated Nintendo game should be, then the game can't have things that potentially break that experience, like extensive communication. Not that I totally agree with that. I mean, I myself don't mind not chatting, but I would like a couple more callouts on the D-Pad. I think Turf War can get away with all this because there's almost nothing important at stake but Experience Points, gear levels, money, and maybe your last 50 match W/L record. That's cool and casual and all, but I'm more about the gameplay. When I say the Ranked modes were more interesting, I meant that I find those modes more fulfilling to me because of their unique rulesets and activities, not because I'm putting down Turf War. I totally get that people like to play Turf War. Splatfests are different, though, especially when Splatfest Power was added as a ranking and matchmaking mechanic. The higher in power you go, the more serious things got. It felt like ranked Turf War in a way, and I liked it. Maybe I just like it when everyone plays for real, so I can get more excited about the game. Maybe that's it?
