The Switch might be a technical wonder – allowing users to game on the go, or on the couch – but if you don't put it away safely when you're done playing bad things could happen.
Nintendo's customer support Twitter account for Japan recently issued an amusing but serious warning – reminding Switch owners not to throw their system on the sofa in case they sit on it. Obviously, if you do this you run the risk of breaking the screen, analog sticks, and buttons.
If you want to keep your Switch as safe as possible, we would advise docking it after a handheld session or finding a fancy protective case if you don't already have one. You can also check out our extensive accessory guide and look at the latest cases, pouches, and backpacks to help protect your beloved hybrid device.
This got us wondering if any of our readers have accidentally sat on their Switch or another Nintendo device before? Feel free to tell us how it happened in the comments below.

Like all silly warnings this is because someone actually did it.
What's funny about this is I told my son to get his Switch off the Lazyboy before someone sits on it.
Whoa, wait what?!?! But that's how I turn it on!
Would it then be called a Nintendo Squish?
The Switch itself could probably handle being sat on just fine. The Joy-Con though, perhaps not.
@Tyranexx : I have been blessed with an abundant posterior, so I'm holding out for the Nintendo Squish XL with extra heavy-duty Ultra High Definition Rumble for my gargantuan hands.
This just makes me wonder how many people break their phones because they put them in their back pocket.
@Silly_G Why not a Nintendo Squish Pro? All the wrestling stars want one!
No sit, Sherlock.
@YozenFroghurt : Aww. Don't you have someone special to cuddle your rump at night?
Train stations in Japan have big yellow warning posters saying not to use selfie sticks near on the platform near the train power lines. Why? Guess.
There's always that one guy.
@SetupDisk Exactly!
No worries- never leaves the dock ever so...
Obvious warnings like this make me weep for humanity. People are so daft it’s embarrassing.
@AnnoyingFrenzy Well, Mario and Link have taught us that switches can only be activated by stomping on them.
They've ignored the biggest threat... your cat sitting on your Switch. Now this is something that will happen.
My cat has also turned on my PS4 by rubbing against it, due to the ridiculously over sensitive power button.
Wouldn't want that HD rumble on our arses, would we?... Would we...?
These illustrations are so meme-worthy. I love 'em.
I learned yesterday that there is a disclaimer on some 4k blu-ray movie cases that mentions that a 4k TV and 4k blu-ray player are not included with the movie...
Would be cool though, a mini 4k TV in the box.
Does anybody seriously just toss their switch on the couch after playing it? It came with a dock for a reason and it's not just so you can play it on the tv. Jeeze people use a little common sense!
Mine never leaves the dock anyway. I'm in my 40's and that tiny screen doesn't do it for me.
I’m first one up this morning in my house, and the first thing I’ve done is pick my Switch up off the sofa where I left it last night after playing Tetris 99 😂 My sons is safely in the dock but he’s been playing Kirby Planet Robobot on his 2DS recently... and it was lying on the other chair in the room. Our bad, Nintendo!
@PiXeLSteF : Often console accessories include disclaimers that neither the console nor other accessories (such as controllers) are included when they are advertised in catalogues (and sometimes on the packaging for the accessory).
I think they are mainly there to repel litigation-happy people who spend their lives nitpicking loopholes in legislation for their benefit, much like "patent trolls" who make patents of plausible devices with absolutely no intention of ever creating so much as a prototype, let alone making it available for the masses.
How not to press the butt butt buttons
Good thing the Switch doesn't fit into the average back pocket. My sister alone has permanently disfigured three phones that way.
You just know someone has sat on their Switch accidentally, broke it and then berated Nintendo for 'not making the system durable' as opposed to, say, their own idiocy
Anybody who has kids knows this is a thing that needs to be said, and repeated. In fact, I think I might get one of those posters for our living room.
Maybe everyone who has had stick drift actually sat on their Switch.
I once got my butt caught in the toaster and there were no warnings in the instruction manual that told me I shouldn't do that. =( Yowie Wowie.
@BenAV My main concern would be what the durability test on JerryRigEverything on YouTube showed: If a Joy Con breaks off while attached to the Switch it's not the Joy Con that most likely breaks, but the points on the Switch were the screws are that hold the metal rail in place.
Wait, your NOT supposed to do that?
@LeatherCorpse That's why we have insurance 😂
Is THAT how we get the drift?
This is the best comment section!
@Kang81 a friend of mine recently did that. It still works but now it has an obvious curve
@Kang81 I never got the purpose of back pockets. What was wrong with side pockets?
@WesEds Like one of those curved TVs?
When I’m not playing the system it is placed back in its case and back in the drawer ( unless a long gamin session I let it cool first before using the case. Have done with all my systems.
However maybe mentioning about falling asleep whilst playing maybe a bigger issue.
THAT'S what I've been doing wrong for 2 1/2 years. Silly me...
I think Caddicarus did that testing the limits of Switch Lite in his Untitled Goose Game review(link to the video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c5Q-2QlN8Og ).
I have sat on my 3DS before when I put in my back pocket for like road trips.
However if you don't try and look behind you and keep a watchful eye, it might disappear, meaning someone could steal it! This is why I try and keep my belongings that fit in my front pockets as much as possible, such as a phone, earbuds, and 3DS.
@WesEds
Wasn’t a phone named the curve before? Maybe it just sounds like a phone name. Ha
LOL at all the forgetful people saying "durr.. just put it in the dock, stoopid!!"
@WesEds
That is my problem with electronics. Falling asleep while using them. I’m always worrying I’ll roll over on them and break a thumb stick. In the case of my Switch, I worry I’ll fall asleep using it in bed, roll over on it and overheat it by cutting off its ventilation.
I bet the next warning will be a reminder not to take a bath while playing the switch.
@tobsesta99
I only use my back pocket for my wallet, I use my side pockets for my keys and anything else. I guess a lot of people don’t like using them. I have numerous people I work with that often mention they hate the feeling of anything in their side pockets. 🤷♂️
@Kang81 People are weird sometimes.
Now we know why the controllers are drifting
@AJ1 "Now we know why the controllers are drifting"
That's beautiful..... now we know the hidden story... about those rear end drifts.... lmao.
I have a hard case and a side satchel designed for consoles and accessories by USA Gear, it fits the dock, hdmi, 2 pro controllers, the hard case and my Daemon X Machina Split Pad Pro. Everything but the charger, which I put in my pocket for travel.
@mauhlin12
Brilliant!
I’ve sat on my vita so many times, still good as new
You don’t say!?
Really?
If I comment here since the last comment was from yesterday, does that mean I am necroing this comment section. Oh what am I to do?! Hehe
The woman on the picture surely loves to sit on that HD Rumble hahahaha😂🤣
@KingMike
Hahahaha that was funny 😂
I have actually already sat on mine a couple of times. -_-;;
@Torn That sort of thing did happen. Reportedly there was one or more kids who brought their toaster in the bath after watching the 1980s sitcom Alf. (don't think I watched that show more than once but I hear wow he sounds like the biggest jerk of all Jim Henson characters. )
News like this convince me that Nintendo should stop putting cameras on their consoles. The Switch is definitely NOT for that kind of fun.
Phew, glad they didn't say we shouldn't put it in the microwave anymore!
