Update (4:15PM, 2nd Sept): The game's eShop page reveals that the release date for Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair is October 8th 2019. Best get saving those pennies!
Original story (15th August): Heads up, folks! It looks like we'll finally be able to get our hands on the upcoming Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair in October.
The game has had a rather vague "Q4 2019" release window plonked alongside it for a while now, but a new tweet posted by developer Playtonic Games appears to have narrowed it down nicely. You can check it out for yourself below.
Just a few weeks ago, Playtonic shared a trailer which gave us our first look at the game's transforming levels, effectively doubling the amount of content available to players. Even more recently, we managed to get members of the studio to create some custom Super Mario Maker 2 levels for your enjoyment - you can check those out here.
Are you looking forward to this Yooka-Laylee sequel? Planning on picking up a copy? Tell us below.

I am just ready for Twoka-Laylee
I'll be buying day one. I love Playtonic and wish for their success.
October looks like another packed month, after a super September with this an A Hat in Time (October 18), plus Luigi Mansion 3 to look forward to...
I'll wait to hear how it performs on the Switch before buying, but I'm cautiously optimistic. Hopefully they also had a 3D platformer sequel to Y-L is development.
This looks like a good game to rotate in with the hour-eaters coming out like DQ11S and Witcher 3.
The game is looking good from the footage so far.... Day 1 purchase for me.
I'm hopeful for this!!
Man... between this, Hat in Time and Luigi's Mansion (plus whatever else stealth drops on me from the e-shop) October is going to kill my wallet and social life lol.
You should mention that the price will be 10 dollar higher than xbone and ps4-version...
@Paraka Same here! Although personally I think TOOka-Laylee would be better.
@Ralizah Playtonic said in an interview recently that Switch was basically their target platform for this game, I'm sure it will run fine!
Also: YAAAAAA!! Oct is a lot sooner than I was expecting
Glad to hear it, the game looks real fun. What a packed end of year.
@koekiemonster I understand that yes it’s a bit annoying that it’s more expensive on Switch - I get it - but it’s often going to cost a company more to make sure it runs at a good rate and quality on a lower powered handheld system, not to mention the cartridge cost. It’s basically a given and most people are fine with it. If $10 breaks the budget then gaming probably isn’t the hobby for you.
This extra charge seems to at least make sense - on the contrary, DLC that should have been included and then we are charged extra for, for example, is where I think that we are being ripped off.. I personally choose to pick my battles.
A Hat In Time is also coming in October. Two awesome games in one month.
Yes, I will be buying this, it gives me an incentive to beat the first game.
Releasing a 2D platformer into an overcrowded market, during a packed month for gaming.
Is this gonna be physical this time, I’m still disappointed that as a backer of the first YL title that I couldn’t upgrade my switch code version for a physical version
@Ralizah I think it runs at 60fps on Switch. I'm excited for it partly based on that frame rate! It should be a really fun and pretty game. If they include mini games this time they'll actually be worth playing if they're running at 60fps. I like Yooka Laylee on Switch, but multiplayer mini games running at 30fps? No thanks.
Can't wait for this and Luigis mansion.
So this is gonna be like the Donkey Kong Country version of Yooka Laylee? Gotta appreciate where Playtonic's head is at.
Love Playtonic, you can definately tell its the same guys who made Banjo with that type of humour.
Had this pre-ordered on Amazon when it was first announced.
October/November is going to be a busy game time
Download price, and/or a physical release could be the deal breaker.
I hope there's a physical copy. Might pick that up if the price is right.
@Henmii There is a physical copy, and it's a standard retail release rather than a limited run.
You can find it on sites like Amazon UK or 365 Games for under £30.
Not sure I care 🤔
Sweet! I was going to get Ghostbusters but I'll opt for this instead. Just enough time before witcher 3..
They are trying so hard to be Tropical Freeze, it is sad. But I will buy the game anyway. I would prefer a new true Donkey Kong Country’s game.
Day 1 buy for me
@antonio2244 granted they didnt make tropical freeze.but they did make dkc 1,2 and 3
October-
Yooka Laylee
Ghostbusters the game
The Witcher 3
Resident Evil triple pack
Aladdin & The Lion King
Super Monkey ball
Luigi's mansion 3
I will most likely get this at certain point but I am certain I won't be done with the big 4 realeading by the end of September...
Is the eshop cheaper than the physical? I have it preordered but just curious.
I cannot wait for this. Only game I'm really getting in September is Death Stranding, as I'm waiting on Cyberpunk. This game will be right up my alley.
This will be overshadowed by my anticipation for Luigi's mansion. Still, if yooka laylee is ever on sale, I'll probably buy it.
Nice, ready for it!
I dont see it on the eshop
I'm excited to play this one! I hope it at least gets in the ballpark of DK Tropical Freeze, not that that's an easy task!
releasing in the overcrowded 2D platforming market, during an overcrowded month for games.
I’ve bought it already. It had a 10% preorder discount.
Cannot wait for this..... Earlier release than I expected, great news!!
Would be rude not to buy this if it releases on my birthday!
@RupeeClock,
Thanks for the answer. I noticed it now. You can get it at several online retailers. I might order it somewhere.
