Whether you like it or not, Mario Kart Wii is still the best-selling entry in the series to date. As a result, it's got a huge following – even after the more recent success of Mario Kart 8 and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.
With this in mind, three new "ultra shortcuts" were recently discovered in the Wii title within the period of 24 hours. Prior to 11th July, there were apparently only 18 known shortcuts in the 2008 kart racer. For the uninformed, ultra shortcuts are essentially glitches – allowing players to skip more than half a lap on any track.
Mario Kart YouTuber Flamin' Funky shared and explained all three of these newly discovered shortcuts in a detailed video (see below) that were found in tool-assisted speed runs (abbreviated as TAS).
The first one takes place on N64 Bowser's Castle and was discovered by speedrunner MKWLuke. The second is located in GBA Shy Guy Beach and was found by a player named Catfish, and the third one is contained within Koopa Cape and was uncovered by BlazeMSX. The shortcuts in Bowser's Castle and Koopa Cape can supposedly be done in TAS. Take a look below:
Do you find these sort of glitches and exploits interesting? Do you still play Mario Kart Wii? Leave a comment below.

Wow. Mario kart Wii is special.
Gonna boot it up today. Mushroom gorge and greatness. Just glad it’s Sunday and school holidays.
Uh those always have been short cut glitches, so this is late news. And yes l seen those gliches before long ago.
Is Mario Kart Wii just the Mario 64 of Mario Karts at this point? Seems like the only Mario Kart people are still actively trying to break.
It’s amazing how many short cuts are discovered in Mario Kart Wii. They blew me away back then when I first saw them. The Mushroom Gorge shortcut, the Grumble Volcano shortcut, The Mario Circuit shortcut. All kinds. I even remember that video of the Daisy’s Circuit Ultra shortcut. Which scared me as a kid since I didn’t expect that jumpscare.
It's time to motion control steering wheel
Not even remotely interesting.
Mario kart Wii is probably the best mario kart, followed by super Mario kart and mario kart DD
For speedrunners' sake, at least they know Nintendo won't patch these out.
ULTRAAAAAAAA shortcut ;]
@patbacknitro18 Well, I mean, people are still trying to break Galaxy and Odyssey.
it was a good game but 8 deluxe is best by a long shot 👍.
Damn, I hated Mushroom Gorge.
We all know it’ll be on MK9.
@Mr_Persona These are different shortcuts that essentially skip an entire lap. They're a lot different because they abuse the checkpoint system. These are also tricks that are pretty much TAS-only, and rely on a trick/technique that was discovered recently.
@ralphdibny "MK Wii" has some good stuff, most notably introducing motion controls and online play to the franchise, but it also has major issues that keep it from being a top tier Mario Kart game. It's lacking in local multiplayer options (not even giving us a multiplayer Grand Prix), the item selection is lousy, the rubberbanding is even worse than usual, and the Battle Mode is the worst in the entire series. Now that online play has been shut down, there's very little reason to revisit it compared to MK 64 or Double Dash, although these glitches are one such reason, I suppose.
(Meanwhile, "Super Mario Kart" doesn't control as well as the other games and is simply too lacking in content and features compared to any other game in the series save for "Super Circuit" to compare favorably to any of the others.)
Can't wait to find some Mario Kart 8 shortcut in 2025.
@BulbasaurusRex I think it's mostly subjective. Online is still possible with the use of homebrew, as well there is ton to play with the lot's of cool custom tracks made by the fans.
For SMK not "controlling" well, I dare to say MK8 has more annoying controls, because you really can't go far to what the game initially presents, while SMK let's you do more (even if the controls take a while to get used to) Also, more custom tracks made by users.
If you have to use tools or hacks,it’s not a real shortcut/trick.
Played a bunch of MK Wii back in high school. Fun game. Little reason to play it now, over MK8DX but still neat. About the only older Mario Kart I'd think I'd go back and play is Double Dash, because it is sufficiently different, rather than just older.
@BulbasaurusRex
-Online play was introduced in Mario Kart DS.
-You don't need multiplayer Grand Prix when there is a VS mode.
-Mario Kart 8 (Wii U) has the worst battle mode in the series... opinion of course
@BulbasaurusRex fair enough! The reason why I love mario kart Wii is because of all the content to unlock and the different ways to unlock it. I barely touched it for a couple of years after launch but when I played it round a friend's house and saw all the characters she had I became hooked and spent the next couple months or so doing everything, including the time trials. I played with the nunchuck before I realised you could get a gold Wii wheel, so I played a bunch with the wheel after that, not to unlock anything, just so I could get that badge of honour! Also I love that autumnal treetop level and the music in it!
MK8 was good but was disappointing in that regard because it felt like there wasn't much to unlock and for what there is, they are all koopa kids.
The reason why I love super and double dash (despite their lack of content) is just they are good games and play well (once you get used to them).
I'd love to give some more time to DS and 7, they had some great tracks, I didn't have an N64 until much later after it was discontinued so I don't have much nostalgia for mk64. I did used to love super circuit on GBA though, I need to revisit it
@rxchrisg TASing is not hacking. TASing is just the use of frame perfect inputs. With enough practice and precision a human player could potentially perform these shortcuts in real time, making these shortcuts as “real” as any other.
