With Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3: The Black Order launching this week, Nintendo has decided to devote its booth at San Diego Comic-Con exclusively to that game. The event runs from 18th-21st July with the game launching on 19th and the Marvel connection seems like a natural fit for the biggest comic book convention of them all.
While its booth in the San Diego Convention Center will be strictly Black Order-based, Nintendo's running a concurrent shindig of its own at the San Diego Marriott Marquis & Marina, very close to the main event. Importantly, access to the 'Nintendo Gaming Lounge' is totally free and open to all.
That sounds great, but it also sounds like a recipe for massive queues, especially looking at what Nintendo has lined up. Attendees should have the chance to get their hands on Pokémon Sword and Shield, Luigi's Mansion 3 and The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening.
Elsewhere, visitors will be able to check out a variety of Nintendo-related activities, including costumed reps, competitions, Hot Wheels, candy and more. Here's a list of the available delights as detailed in the official press release:
Southwest Airlines: Two Super Mario Maker 2 kiosks will feature a custom Southwest Airlines course. Consumers will be encouraged to participate in open gameplay sessions July 18-19. On July 20, fans who are 13+ can visit the Nintendo Gaming Lounge and play Super Mario Maker 2 to enter for a chance to win a Nintendo Switch prize pack, which includes a Nintendo Switch system, a digital version of the Super Mario Maker 2 game and a $500 Southwest Airlines gift card.
Costumes: Representatives from Disguise Costumes will be walking around to show off Nintendo-themed character costumes. Attendees might run into people wearing costumes of characters like Mario, Link, Zelda, Toad, Luigi, Bowser, Donkey Kong, Rosalina or Yoshi.
Sugarfina: The luxury candy boutique will debut its new collection celebrating the Nintendo Entertainment System™ and Super Mario Bros.™ Power up with six character-inspired Candy Cubes®, including three new gummies: pineapple Invincible Stars, apple-flavored Green Mushrooms and cherry-flavored Red Mushrooms. The collector’s gift set features the 3-Piece Nintendo Entertainment System™ Console Candy Bento Box® complete with iconic game music and matching 2-piece Controller Candy Bento Box®. The collection hits stores on July 22.
Hot Wheels: The Nintendo Gaming Lounge is the only place to play with the new Hot Wheels Mario Kart die-cast vehicles and tracksets inspired by iconic courses from the video game. Race Mario and Yoshi as die-cast karts and overcome obstacles and challenges – just like in the game, but this time on Hot Wheels tracks!
Photo Ops: Fans who stop by the lounge can get fun photos featuring elements from games like Super Mario Maker 2, Pokémon Sword, Pokémon Shield and Luigi’s Mansion 3. Keep an eye open for the Luigi and Gooigi figures.
My Nintendo Check-In: San Diego Comic-Con also happens to be the same weekend as the final Splatfest for the Splatoon 2 game. To commemorate this epic showdown, attendees can check in with their My Nintendo QR Code at the Nintendo Gaming Lounge to receive an exclusive Splatoon 2 Chaos vs. Order keychain set (while supplies last).
What with the final Splatoon 2 Splatfest, there seems to be an awful lot for Nintendo fans in the San Diego area to be getting on with this weekend. If anybody's heading to the Mattel booth in the convention center, feel free to pick us up a Comic-Con exclusive Hot Wheels Metal Mario. Apparently one in ten will be a Gold Mario, too, and we're suckers for exclusive merch.
Are you heading to Comic-Con this year? Excited to try out any of the games mentioned above. Feel free to share your excitement or apathy below.

Friday can't come soon enough! But how does one choose between Spider-Man and Thor?
Cosplay is getting stale, it needs to be cranked up a notch. Costumed link had better paraglide off of hall h breath of the wild style or it’s a bust.
My Switch is supposed to come back from repair on Friday too! Can’t wait to play this.
@boneyard you shouldn't have to since its 4 man teams, bring both. I've always had Ghost Rider and Daredevil as my mains in MUA 1 and 2 and that won't change this time either.
Hawkeye, Ghost Rider, Venom, Deadpool. My team for MUA3.
I'm glad to see Nintendo finally advertising this game a bit, they've been way too quiet about it. Can't wait to see how this game shapes up, it's one of the major releases I'm planning to snatch up for July.
With all the web-slinger characters included, I'm thinking of going full Spooder with Spider-Man, Miles Morales, Spider Gwen, and Venom.
@vegeta11 I have zero experience with this series. Can you switch between the both on the fly?
@boneyard yep, four man team just hit whatever button to change character
My copy won't be arriving until monday, but on the weekend I'll be spending some quality time on board games with friends anyway, so It's not that great a loss. Going to ask them to pick my MUA3 team, so I'm expecting some unusual choices.
Yay let’s all get excited for a top end priced game (£49.99) that has no review scores yet.
@MrGawain surely all top end priced games exist pre review, unless Dev cycles have got ridiculously quick?
@Duncanballs
Most Nintendo published games are priced between £35-£45 in the UK (Barring Zelda)- most of the close releases are much cheaper. I’m holding out getting excited for this pricey game until we get an opinion from the press. Even beyond reviews, NL, Gamexplain, GoNintendo and the rest seem to be sharing a lot more about Fire Emblem and Astral Chain than MUA3. Makes me wonder why?
@MrGawain live in the UK myself. Prices often shift very close to launch date. Wouldn't be surprised if it hits £40 by Friday. It's not the biggest release this month so not paying too much attention that the media are focusing on other games. Just coming from my own experience of being excited in the past about a pending release of a full price title. Yes not all turn out to be good as I thought but price doesn't always hamper my hype before review, maybe just delays the purchase sometimes.
@Onion praying for Spider-Ham DLC...
Not impressed with this game, add the bundle forced purchase and its definatly an avoid.
@Muddy_4_Ever
A friend of mine said the same thing, haha. I wouldn't count on it though, looks like the DLC is Marvel Knights, X-Men, and Fantastic Four.
@MrGawain
I know that it seems like a lost art these days, but some people actually think for themselves & don't worry that heavily about what reviewers or others opinions are. Thet just buy & choose to enjoy what THEY want or have interest in. Crazy I know, but not too radical a concept considering that these reviewers aren't the ones coming out of their pockets for your games whether you enjoy or hate a game you purchased off of their recommendations.
I mean it IS just their opinions after all. Going off my usual script & listening to reviewers instead of going with my gut is how I wasted $60 on the last god of war. And when did top end games become 49 bucks again? I wish we were that lucky again. Top end games tend to be 59.99 & above when I checked. Last time I saw a 49 dollar game was the GC/Xbox & ps2 era. Could be a regional thing, but if so, I need to start importing for real.
@Kriven
Facts for sure.
@Kriven who's got lined pockets? Didn't see any evidence of that from anyone's comments. Just my opinion though, you don't have to listen to it.
I just hope the game turns out alright. I haven’t heard anything good about it. Then again I haven’t heard anything bad about it either. Guess will see.
I hear 4 man teams, but is it 4 player couch coop?
@MrGawain
Well if people didn't hype games because of the lack of reviews, no one would ever hype anything since reviews usually dont drop until a week at most before the game launches.
Nothing wrong about being optimistic either, especially on this site where people are almost always negative on a game, a lot of the time for no reason. Hype and positivity is definitely refreshing to see.
@gameboy1975
I was counting in UK £’s, £50 is around $60.
And personally, generally I’ve found that Nintendolife and Gamexplain tend to rate games as I would, if they say something is worthwhile I usually enjoy it. I can’t help but feel this game is being pushed as a preorder (along with all in one DLC), but the review embargo is very late in the day.
If people are looking forward to the game then great, if it gets a thumbs up from the reviewers I trust then I’ll probably buy it, but at this moment I feel slightly sceptical about it as how it’s being presented/sold.
I predict this will be a 7.8/10 kind of game.
Not a fan of how they are handling the DLC, but this game looks solidly fun! Glad to get a superhero game that's not just a fighting game with superhero characters phoned in!
Someday. Someday I will get to go to a Comic Con.
@Fake-E-Lee I'm going to wait, too. I'm interested in the game but Dragon Quest Builders 2 and Fire Emblem are much higher on my list, and my backlog, actually let's not talk about my backlog.
I’m buying this sucker and I know what I’m in for. It looks to be much the same as the first two, a dungeon crawling button masher without a huge amount of strategy or combat depth. Putting together teams and leveling up a huge roster of characters through a comic book storyline guaranteed to be Saturday Morning Cartoon hokey is exactly what I want. It’s perfect for summer, a couple of buddies and a box of cereal.
@Heavyarms55
You really should go to a Comic-Con, it's quite an experience! I attend my local Expo in April and I'm going to the Edmonton Expo in September.
I cant wait to start playing MUA3 on Friday, because I used a voucher it only cost me $64 instead of the usual $80.
@Robzilla I hope so, that’s not a bad score at all. I’m worried it’ll be far lower, but I want it to be good.
@Lord Uhh, this isn’t an Ubisoft game...
@MrGawain I think I read the review embargo is lifted on Thursday so we will find out beforehand if it’s any good or not. If it’s anything like the first two with modern day enhancements I’ll be ecstatic. I rather enjoy the diablo style loot games and comics mash up.
@Lord
“Why would they. It’s ubisoft trash”
I don’t get the joke.
@CockyKoopa I hope yours does. I was getting nervous when it hadn’t updated that it was received when UPS said it arrived.
@CaPPa I have wanted to for years. But never had the time and money to travel to one.
