During the latest Nintendo Direct presentation, it was announced Square Enix would be publishing the new action role-playing game Oninaki this summer. The title is being developed by the talented team at Tokyo RPG Factory, who are previously responsible for I Am Setsuna and Lost Sphear.
Here's more information about Oninaki, courtesy of the announcement trailer description:
Players assume the role of a Watcher named Kagachi, doing battle by “manifesting” the souls of Daemons, which act as the classes found in traditional roleplaying games. Each Daemon has its own unique weapons and skills, and players can shift between them in real time to gain the upper hand in battle.
Moving between the Living World and the realm of the dead known as the Beyond, Kagachi must save the souls of the Lost, as the story of life and reincarnation in this wondrous kingdom unfolds.
Once again, this upcoming Square Enix release arrives on the Nintendo Switch this summer. Take a look at the game's trailer and tell us what you think in the comments below.

This looks great to me and one of the more pleasant announcements today. I hope it reviews better than Lost Sphear and I Am Setsuna though. I’ll stay tuned.
Looks way more interesting than their previous games. I'm still waiting for reviews, but I'm cautiously optimistic about it, and this might very well be my first Tokyo RPG Factory game.
Looks like another turned based RPG like the millions before it. Honestly, all these anime looking games kind of blended together during the direct.
I cringed when I heard it was from the "I am Setsuna" people. That game remains one of the very few disappointments I have had on Switch to date. Everything felt so basic and cookie cutter. Not bad, just painfully... standard.
This is their best looking game yet.
Lost Sphear looked pretty good but... it didn’t really grab me. I thought the combat system was pretty cool but the gameplay was a little bit dated if I’m being perfectly honest.
This looks like they’re learning from their previous development though. I’m definitely intrigued.
Looks like Lost Sphear upgraded...but worth looking at if it becomes Physical.
I think this team has been growing bit by bit and maybe they are a couple of titles away from creating a very good game.
I always thought they could be the perfect team to do a remake of Super Mario R.P.G. The Legend of the Seven Stars.
I Am Setsuna and Lost Sphear were average jrpgs at best. However, Oninaki looks like a step above those games. Probably due to a bigger budget and staff.
@LUIGITORNADO the video didnt show any turn based combat. It looked action oriented.
I enjoyed I Am Setsuna but didn't care for Lost Sphere. Setsuna's atmosphere had a unique allure while Lost Sphere just seemed like a bunch of JRPG mechanics rolled into a convoluted and generic turn-based burrito.
This, on the other hand, is grabbing my attention. I like the more action-oriented approach. Definitely keeping this one on my radar!
@Mars I liked I am and loved Lost Sphear, but they definitely aren’t for everyone.
Action RPG.... and I’m interested.
this looks pretty good to me so far, will wait and see but optimistic.
looks great! can't wait to see more.
While it pales in comparison to some of the other RPG's shown in the direct (DQXI looked shockingly good, I'm over the moon about it) it looks really good in its own right. Definitely looks like a step up from their previous work, which can only be a good thing.
Hopefully third time lucky for the Tokyo rpg Dev. I really was not enamored by setsuna and just skipped lost sphear. It looks more evolved than those two so I hope it less cookie-cutter and less bland.
Another bland game from Tokyo RPG Factory? Or should they get it right in the third try?
Gonna wait for reviews and check the demo before spending any money in that game, even if heavily discounted on pre-purchase. I am Setsuna told me a harsh lesson about misleading marketing ("the Chrono Trigger successor") and why not trust in the first hour of any RPG.
So glad it isn't just another Chrono Trigger knockoff like the first two this time.
The story seems really intriguing, if done right. I haven't played the former two, but this grabbed me!
@bolt05 The differences this time is that this one is a Switch exclusive and is developed with the Switch in mind whereas the first two were multiplat RPGs. Tokyo RPG Factory now only had to focus on one platform, hope they make the best of it.
Let's be honest, Square is the best developer for the Switch at the moment.
I lost my counts of how many games were announced and they were the developers.
I hope this trend will continue.
Shane on Capcom that didn't have any thing to offer.
I was excited about this till I saw the dev team. Much more excited for Bravely Default 3 than any non Dragon Quest news from Square Enix today(that was great).
Is this an exclusive to Switch?
It's an action RPG so I'm interested. I've never been able to enjoy turn based combat unfortunately. Hopeful it's a step up from their previous titles.
It's still a shame it's that 'adults that look like kids' style, which to my eye always looked creepy and inappropriate. Sure, it's a culture thing but it still looks creepy to me.
Hmm, this game doesn't really grab me so far.
Looks really bland.
@LUIGITORNADO Turn based RPG? Did you even watch the trailer?
@garfreek Right!? I love the sound of the story. The thing that all RPG's should be focused on.
Love the look of this, seems way more interesting both in terms of visuals, story and gameplay than their previous two games - which were good! Very excited, one of the best announcements in a very strong Direct.
@LUIGITORNADO
looks more like an action rpg
@LUIGITORNADO
Kind of felt like watching an old 3ds direct with all those games.
I was interested until I saw the dreaded name "Tokyo RPG Factory". It will be another ultra low budget, repetitive grind fest with zero charisma and charm. And probably an awful soundtrack too.
Square should cut these bozos loose.
It has my interest, so I'm looking forward to hearing more. I always light up a touch when I hear Action RPG.
@tillyboo @retro_player_22 No, it will be released on PS4 and PC too.
Lost Sphear is actually not bad and this looks better than that. Sure, it wasn't FF6 or ChronoTrigger but if it released back then, it would have been remembered fondly. The biggest problem with it was the nonsensical story, but I still kinda prefer it to Octopath.
@Strumpan Well at least it not the same as the first two in terms of gameplay mechanic. This seems to be more unique than a CT knockout which the first two tried to be.
