The Messenger was one of the indie highlights of 2018. The developer Sabotage poured a lot of love into this title while drawing inspiration from the original Ninja Gaiden game. If you haven't already played it, you might want to hurry up. As previously announced, The Messenger will be embarking on a sunny holiday in the form of a free DLC pack titled 'Picnic Panic' at some point in 2019.
Based on a recent 'Q&A' video featuring the game's director Thierry Boulanger, more content for The Messenger could also be on the way. The upcoming free DLC was described by Boulanger as an "experiment" to test the waters and was intended to be part of a bigger DLC pack, divided into three separate chapters.

If the free DLC pack 'Picnic Panic' can drive sales of the main game and increases its overall value, it could potentially allow the team to keep on releasing more DLC for the title. For more information about this content, view the full video below:

I hope any new dlc makes it into the upcoming physical cart
Hope this goes on sale when the DLC comes out. I didn’t have any funds the last time it was on sale, but if it’s around $10, it’s a sure buy.
That would be awesome. After that give us a complete physical release as well.
No complaints here. My favorite indie game last year.
Holding out for the physical release.
The Messenger is my favorite Indie game of 2018 and possibly ever but this dlc is only ok looking. The only game that had worthwhile/excellent dlc was Shovel Knight. The Messenger could have done something truly unique and awesome and had dlc of a full campaign based on the army guy. Then again as the Cowboy.
Such happy news! I adore this game and will continue supporting it and its creators!!
For me the main, possibly only real weakness of the Messenger is that it's too long! I've not finished and I doubt I ever will. I absolutely loved the first few hours, but got totally burned out.
That Q&A video
DAMN THESE GLASSES!

@WaveBoy Howlongtoneat.com says the Ninja Gaiden games are about 2-3 hours long on average, and The Messenger is about 11 hours long (15 hours if you’re a completionist).
@chiptoon Every time I started to think the game felt too long, it threw something totally new and surprising at me. You should try to beat The Messenger. The last few hours were full of some amazing stuff.
Is Messenger the new Shovel Knight ?
The Messenger was my pick for game of the year. Everyone should buy it!
Give us a physical and the sales will go up
@WaveBoy I can beat Ninja Gaiden so easily on my Switch....if I abuse save states.
Maybe one day I’ll be able to beat that whole thing without assistance, haha.
It’s a great game and I certainly would love some free DLC. For paid DLC, $5 per extra chapter and I’ll probably dive in.
I’m not buying digital anymore, so if they want a sale from me get that cartridge out. I know it’s coming, and I’m waiting.
@SubtleGris I bought Splatoon 2 after they announced the Octo Expansion DLC - although admittedly that was a slightly different situation as it was adding an significant single player component to a largely multiplayer title.
Def gonna pick this up at some point!
@SubtleGris Free DLC is awesome. It keeps the game in the news and in the discussion forums.
Look at how Shovel Knight has been able to keep its 2014 game in the news all the way into 2019. Slime-San did something similar, with huge free expansions.
This is great. I loved The Messenger, and although it's a bit difficult for my skill level at this point in my working-adult-father-husband life, I really appreciate the efforts and finished product that is the game.
I fully intend to spend more time and have more fun with The Messenger once the DLC hits.
@SubtleGris I don't know why people downvoted your comment. You only gave a preference. For me, free dlc will encourage me to buy a game I'm on the fence about. This is actually one of those games. I have it on my wishlist. Next time it is on sale in the e-shop I'll buy it. 'fo sho
@SubtleGris Not everyone buy at release and there is also new players everyday.
Continued support for game can help bring new players who are on a fence or just got their console. Maybe they aren't interested in a "surf DLC" in particular but the image of an active and good developer can drive more sales.
On the other hand you see developers who barely touch their game after the initial release. More than often leaving bugs unfixed, let alone releasing new (free) content.
Personally I am not down with that changing artstyle, it might be a minor gripe, but if this game would have stuck to one art style I would be much, much more interested...
@SubtleGris I get that. I don't take them personally, but it just amazed me you had so many when you didn't say anything racist or sexist. Like obviously we disagree because FREE DL will convince me to buy a game, but I'm not going to downvote your opinion. If we all thought the same way, games would be boring and the same. Thanks for writing back. Have a great week!
@SubtleGris Shovel Knight persuaded me to triple dip because of their outstanding DLC lol.
