The first official trailer for the next Pokémon film - Pokémon The Movie: Mewtwo Strikes Back Evolution - has now been released, giving us a juicy tease of things to come. Make sure to check it out above.
This film will be the 22nd movie in Pokémon's cinematic history and the third movie in the franchise's recent alternate continuity, following on from Pokémon the Movie: I Choose You! (which loosely followed the story of the anime's opening season) and 2018's Pokémon the Movie: The Power of Us. This new adventure acts as a callback to the very first Pokémon film, Pokémon: The First Movie - Mewtwo Strikes Back, which first released in Japan back in 1998.
As well as the trailer, two official images have also been released. The first is a screenshot from the movie which was shared just earlier today, and the second is an official poster for the film, boasting its 'The Legend is Back' strapline.
The film is set to debut in Japanese theatres on 12th July 2019 - if recent Pokémon movie trends are anything to go by, this means that we'd expect it to arrive in Europe and North America sometime around November 2019.

The original Mewtwo Striks Back was part of my childhood. With that said, I have high hopes and expectations here.
Is it supposed to be a straight up remake? Considering how timeless the original movie was, it's going to be interesting to see how they do it.
This time Nintendo Life was quick, lol!
I just now saw that trailer on TV and thought: what a weird time to advertise the Pokémon movie (in Japan is already past midnight, so we’re already in 2019)
CGI? Interesting, but a shame as the last film had a great animation style.
@blackbox64 It's unclear at the minute, but this (admittedly tiny) tease makes me confident that they can pull it off. Looks pretty epic to me!
@maruse I was on standby waiting to press the big "publish the hype" button we have in the office for announcement posts
I'm kinda iffy on this since it is CGI. Not to say that it'll be terrible but I'm not expecting anything I haven't seen before.
Looks great I’ll be keeping an eye out
I just want to see the resolution of the most epic fight in pokemon history mew vs mewtwo...before Ash got in the way.....
Wow, NL being on time with news for once! Regardless, the Pokémon movies have been disappointing since Gen 7 began, so honestly, I have no expectations for this, considering the last two movies haven't even been placed into the actual anime canonical continuity. I'm prepared for huge dissappointment already.
I don't really like the fact they're just reusing the old stories now for the new films. Game Freak seems obsessed with using 'nostalgia' to hype up new Pokemon media. That said, if the whole film is CGI that could be an interesting new direction to take and it could be good, but it would be overshadowed by Detective Pikachu, which is by far the most original film, if not the most original new media of any kind, to come from the Pokemon Company in some time.
@Torakaka Should we push the B Button to stop its evolution?
Yay Mewtwo is still fighting Mew because there are no better Pokemon stories.
I have high hopes for this one but feel like I need to see the other movies in this new continuity first. XD
That computer generated mewtwo looks like he could've been from Casper the ghost.
@riChchestM My assumption is that this teaser trailer is only in CGI and the actual movie is in the same vein as the others animation wise. But I could be wrong and something somewhere else says otherwise
Just don't make changes to the plot in the localization this time.
Just let Ash die this time.
C'mon Pokemon Company add a twist to the movie, surprise us with Mewthree already.
I bet they will continue the "tragic backstory of a Pokemon dieing"..... Which is pretty awesome and hope they develope the story further.
It’s got to be better than Dragon Ball Evolution at least.
Not sure what people are expecting, but based on the title and the trailer, it just looks like a remake of the first movie with 3D computer graphic models.
@DarkKirby That’s what I assumed, too.
For the American soundtrack release, will this include a song that has nothing to do with the film, such as M2M’s “Don’t Say You Love Me”? Anyone remember that?
@Bass_X0 I can't believe I'm saying this but Howard the Duck was better than Dragon Ball Evolution.
@dimi HD or CGI both?
Count Me In!!!!!
Why does the animation look more like cheap CG used for a Pokemon TCG commercial, rather than real anime? It's HIDEOUS!
CG will be what kills anime for me. It's ugly. I do not like it. And every time I see it pop up in an anime, it's an instant negative for me. And it's happening more and more these days. I am the kind of anime nerd who watches several airing anime every season. I love the medium despite it's many flaws. But if this growing trend continues, it will ruin it for me.
Cgi, won't be seeing this then.
