Video game movie adaptations are all the rage nowadays, with Deadline Hollywood reporting Sony Pictures sub-division Screen Gems has acquired the rights to create a film based on Ubisoft's incredibly popular video game series, Just Dance.
Multiple studios competed for the rights to the best-selling music video game franchise of all time - with an established player base of 120 million worldwide. As for the project itself, Ubisoft Film and Television and Olive Bridge Entertainment will be responsible for developing and producing the project. Jason Altman and Margaret Boykin will produce for Ubisoft Film and Television and Jodi Hildebrand and Will Gluck will represent Olive Bridge Entertainment. There's currently a search for scriptwriters.
According to Deadline, this deal fits the mandate Sony chief Kazuo Hirai highlighted at CES - with the studio's intention to exploit properties across multiple platforms. Just Dance is already popular on consoles, including Sony's own video game system and features many of Sony's top artists. IGN also notes how Screen Gems has a strong history adapting video games to films. Its most notable effort being the Resident Evil movie series with Monster Hunter also on the way.
The latest entry in Ubisoft's dance series was Just Dance 2019, released on the Nintendo Switch and multiple other platforms in October last year.
Is this the video game movie adaptation you've been waiting for? Tell us below.

@CurryPowderKeg79
Absolutely
I’m sure Sony chose the Just Dance franchise for its narrative possibilities and not the heaps of cash it’s made. Sony would never make a movie about something just because it’s popular!
Just Leave...
I only care with Dance Dance Revolution.
@DarthNocturnal: You forgot Betamax.
Oh my gosh......WHY?
Ooooook.
That's fine I guess.
Just Dance movie? Just No.
Why?? Not every game needs its own movie. I would even argue that 99.9% of games don't need a movie.
@DarthNocturnal: I suppose they won't want phonographs left out....Maybe a full movie OST release for that format?
I bet they'll rerelease this movie every year with the only difference being that a couple songs on the soundtrack are different. Hey, at least it's faithful to the games!
What a complete waste of money, talent and time.
@AxeltheBuizel And it will still be releasing at drive-ins every year, even though they're outdated and obsolete like the Wii.
Are we going to be getting yearly sequels?
@Not_Soos It'll also be released on HD DVD because like the Wii U they failed so badly that the everyday person wiped it from their mind.
....mkay. (blah blah blah character count sucks, blah.)
'The Wizard', this shall not be.
Who wants to bet they’ll be making a COD or Rabbids movie next? (Ik COD isn’t Ubi, shup).
Oh for the mother of f-
I’m actually interested to know what they possibly think they could do with this. Try me.
An expected move from a beloved game series. Love the latest game. Addresses themes like the homogeneous nature of pop music and how media relies on overstimulating it’s audience to cover up lack of depth. This video game film will definitely buck the trend and surely be a classic.
Truly a weapon to surpass The Emoji Movie.
@DarthNocturnal Just Dance: The Movie: The Game coming to Wii next year!
So they haven't yet made a NES Power Pad version?
(well, as Frank Cifaldi has pointed out: the prevalence of Famiclones as the stock platform of cheap plug 'n play games means that technically the NES has had a 30+ year lifespan right under our noses.)
Established player base of 120 million? When will these people learn not to make business decisions based upon how many people download your free game on mobile. Surely the fact that it's real sales on consoles have fallen off a cliff since it's success on the Wii nearly 10 years ago tells you more about it's popularity
With such a subject matter it could be applied to any dancing movie ever made or ever to be made and be done with it. The plus is the creators will have total freedom as there is little to go on or need to follow.
They should include "Now you can move your fat body freely" on their poster.
Sonic: I am going to be in the dumbest video game movie adaptation.
Just Dance: Hold my beer.
@CurryPowderKeg79 ehh how bad could thy mess up a musical movie.
It already has a plot just as good as any other dance movie.
So who wants to bet Hollywood somehow can't even make this into a good movie
I suppose there has been no efforts made in reaching out to Lady Gaga for a comment.
My 7 year old son wanted Just Dance 2019 on his Switch with Christmas and I must say it actually is a pretty darn good and fun, but most importantly a very social game.
The Online competition mode is actually fun and addictive trying to get as high as possible ranking.
It was really a lot of fun just watching your own kid having a great time with his friends.
Seeing how many play online, there is obviously a huge loyal audience to this franchise, otherwise Ubisoft wouldn't continue with bringing out a new version every year.
This makes a lot of sense - means a film studio can make a dumb fun dance film but with a brand name that’s already well known
Oh god......
but wait people watch people playing games on you tube, so what will be the difference? They are just using the name to sell a dancing film. No different to Grease 3
Film director says lets make a movie based on a game with no plot. What could possibly go wrong lol.
A Dancing game Getting a move that has no plot to begin with?
at least the Sonic movie is base of a video game that has a plot to it. i'll be shocked if this is somehow good though.
Gonna be ok
High School Musical but everyone is the weird Just Dance avatars.
As someone who's seen High School Musical and Step Up
I already know exactly what this film is about
Now which flawlessly haired teenager with awful emotional delivery shall we cast first?
Personally I'm waiting for the Pong movie.It's going to be awesome!
@SlyPlayr09 @Spoony_Tech @musky69 @Twili_Waker @CurryPowderKeg79
Why?
"Sing", the movie, cost $75 mil to make, made $635mil at the box office. Plus another $65mil on DVD and blu-ray.
https://www.the-numbers.com/movie/Sing-(2016)#tab=summary
See also HSM, Pitch Perfect, all those cheerleader and dance off competition movies with names like Step, Stomp, Bring it.
Probably won't be a great movie, but it's easy money. The only thing surprising is that nobody made it sooner.
@BlueBlur101 @FX102A @BensonUii
Glad to see after the first 2 dozen comments some sane comments showed up, I was getting worried.
@rjejr You answered the question why with won't be a great movie. All those other ones were worth watching thus made money. I have no desire to watch this even on Netflix.
@rjejr Don't worry
We think Sonic will be worth checking out opening night too
But not because it'll be good
Glad to see the Emoji Movie Cinematic Universe is thriving.
Kinda silly on the surface. But if I had to imagine an adaptation of the series, I’d do it in a style of Step Up or Save the Last Dance. One of those type of movies. I truly can’t think of any other way. Though here’s a thought. Maybe do it in the vein of the 80’s cartoon Kidd Video.
@DarthNocturnal You forgot Super-8.
@Spoony_Tech Well 1, you're not supposed to have any desire to watch this, it will obviously be geared towards 10 - 11 year old girls, and I know you aren't one of those. Are you telling me you have a desire to watch those High School Musical movies? Or Step Up, Bring it On or Stomp the Yard? All of those have sequels. They all made money.
Second, we don't even have any idea what kind of movie this will be. Will it be live action full of pretty people? CGI full of animals? How can you be so quick to judge it?
Know what movie people loved, a movie about a rat chef. Does a movie about a rat chef sound good to you? Ratotoulie did just fine. It won a freakin Oscar. 96 metacritc score. $623 million. (coincidentally just like Sing.) A rat chef. Think about that.

I am already vomitting!
