Last weekend, we reported on a young man named Chris Taylor with terminal cancer, who made the decision in July to decline further treatment. With an estimated three to six months left to live, his last wish was to play Nintendo's recently announced game, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.
Taylor's comments on social media gained traction on websites like Reddit and the video game community started a campaign to help him gain access to a pre-release version of Smash. Not long after this, his wish came true, when Nintendo arrived at his house with a copy of the E3 demo of Ultimate.
Below are some photos from the man himself showing the special moment:
It's great to see the video game community including a company like Nintendo get behind such a campaign. We hope Chris and his friends enjoyed their time with the new Smash Bros.

I’m SO glad this happened. I hope you enjoyed it Chris. And Nintendo... good on you. Good on you.
Good to hear.
This is cool, good to see. But...
‘Please be respectful in the comments’
Oh my sweet summer child. Let’s hope so.
That’s pretty cool.
Fantastic, beautiful, I love it.
For all of the people who mindlessly complain about Nintendo not "caring" about their fans for various reasons, this just goes to show what kind of company Nintendo truly is. They didn't even have to acknowledge this young man's request, but they did, and they made sure that one of his last wishes while he still has time left on this Earth was fulfilled. It brings a tear to my eye to read this story because none of us know when our time will come, but we will all wish to be comforted when it does happen. For Chris Taylor, Ninentendo came through for him and did what they could during his time of need. I hope nothing but the best for Chris during the upcoming days and months, and he will definitely be in my thoughts.
This is awesome, bravo Nintendo.
@BladedKnight kinda double on that, why not let him play the most current build of the game? I know it’s not finished yet and I know it’s all secrets ‘n stuff but still.
On the other hand, he has terminal cancer and is hospitalized, he probably can’t play that demo even if it was available at a local store near him.
But in the end, he enjoyed something he soon can’t enjoy anymore and that’s the most important thing here.
Glad he got to play it. Nice of Nintendo to do that.
Now thats a sad but happy story. Glad Nintendo had a bigger heart than a small minority that commented on the last article. Nintendo might not get everything right but it really seems when it comes to kind of thing they still have a small company / big heart approach that gives their fans that feel good factor. It's the right kind of company to have my loyalty!!
Man, this made my day. Each of those Twitter photos is worth more than a thousand words. The pure happiness and joy in each of them....I'm glad his wish got fulfilled.
Chris, if you're reading this, may the rest of your days be the best.
This is why i truly love Nintendo! Thanks for doing this.
Oh that’s awesome!! Glad he got to have a good time, too!
I'm glad to hear Nintendo do this to make a child's dream come true is amazing and I hope he enjoyed the time he had to play the game.
#going the extra mile. Can't guumble with how they handled this one.
God bless you Nintendo for granting a fan one last wish.
@dleec8 listening to fans and doing a good thing for a fan are 2 separate things.
I can do great stuff for people in need but not listen to the rest.
Before people grab their pitchforks, I am very happy this guy can play that game, it's great someone did listen at Nintendo and gave this guy a great fun day.
My only point is that people to many times see listening and doing something good as 1 thing which it isn't. (and I'm not talking about nintendo only buy overall about all people including myself)
I wonder how long till the blanks from the previous article show up.
Well done Ninty. Nintendo handled this well. He looks very happy in the photo's, which is great to see.

here we go....
Glad he got to play!
Well isn't that swell?
@darkswabber Not like it would change the gameplay drastically anyway. It's better to give him a stable build they have on-hand, and is leak-safe, than to throw an NDA at the group and let him play a buggy build. Dude just wants to play, since he can't go to these events, and thankfully he had a decent session with friends/family.
I'm super happy for him and extremely proud of all the people who helpped and supported him. I'm very dissapointed in what some of the kids had to say about him in that last article, who knew people could be so incredibly disrespectful to a cancer patient, suppose that's just the child mentality some people still need help growing out of. Anyway, I'm very happy for Chris, hopefully one day we can all finally beat cancer out of this world.
"Note: Please be respectful in the comments"
...is this not a general rule? I didn't realise we had to be told when it was in effect
But anyway it's good to see him have a good time, I think a lot of us here get caught up in the stuff that doesn't matter, at the end of the day games are for bringing people together and having fun. It's good to see that Nintendo remember this
Excellent, well done Ninty.
Also, anyone not being respectful in this case should take a long look in the mirror.
Heart warming story
Glad he got to enjoy the game. Well done to all involved in making it happen
very happy to hear!
@Kimyonaakuma The reason they put this in this article is due to a bunch of miscreants in the last one coming in to be D-bags seemingly just for the sake of making it known how little empathy they have for other people in general. I'm gonna leave it at that.
Good move Nintendo
Well done Nintendo, what a nice thing to do.
I hope you and your friends had a great time with the game Chris !!
Nice one, Ninty!
Nice one. Hope you had a great time.
That's great that he was able to play the E3 demo, which I was thinking they were going to do.
Hope that the last days are filled with so much love and fun so that he can rest peacefully
Good to hear! Hope he enjoys it.
(Glares at the comments)
I'm watching.
This is great to hear!!
Imagine if someone stole a best buy demo for him? I bet that could've been made into a payday 2 mission. Still, good to hear.
This just goes to show that sometimes Nintendo does something amazing and simultaneously let's down a portion of its fanbase anyway.
Good job guys.
Just disable comments on subjects this serious, don't even give people the chance to write something terrible. Makes more sense than seeing half the comments basically egging them on to do it....
So happy for Chris!
I knew they would I hate to say i told you so but i did kinda tell you they would lol. Great news for the person and nintendo fans in general.
It's a great thing, but we should not know about it. That way no one could say Nintendo done it for publicity.
@RedMageLanakyn
How are any of the comments here egging someone to post some nasty comment??
I'm glad he got the chance, but it's so terrible that he'll be gone in just a few months. No one should go that young.
75 days till release. I hope he can hang in there for the full thing.
"Note: Please be respectful in the comments"
Ok.
@KryptoniteKrunch I'm seeing things like talking down about the people who commented in the previous article, mods saying "I'm watching..." and the note at the end of the article, things like that. I'm not saying these commentors are purposely trying to egg them on, but those types of people could take those as a dare or challenge to do it.
Man dying of cancer - company grants 1 of his dying wishes
*Please be respectful in the comments
Oh good golly what this says about us as a group......
Glad it got enough publicity that Nintnedo seen it and worked to make it happen. Moments like these are worth all of humanities flaws.
It's quite sad to see that a disclaimer asking us to be respectful is even necessary, but with our track record (at least when normal people are involved rather than gaming celebrities) that's what we get.
Anyway, I've had the goofiest smile all day ever since I found out this morning the campaign went through. Of course, as expected it's just a demo, to the delight of whoever was so gung-ho about denying Chris the chance to play "BECAUSE THE LEAKZ!11!!!" or whatever, I guess. But still, the guy won't leave our world without having sampled his (and my) dream game.
Nonetheless, whether you (delusionally) think he "got lucky" with this "special treatment" or (hopefully) not, I'm glad Chris did. The kid (if you're reading, Chris, it's an affectionate term) deserved to see this wish granted, and yet it's not something to be taken for granted, so mad props to Nintendo for what they did. Switch Online shenanigans be damned, I'm all for Nintendo right now.
And now that you've played the game, hang in there, Chris. Two people in my family are struggling with cancer as well, so all I can say is what I told them: be strong. I know that your possible biggest regret is now a thing of the past, but life's not over just yet.
Great story.
@Gerbwmu think it says more about the internet culture in general where people say and do things just because it will get them a moments attention
@RedMageLanakyn that's ridiculous. Suggesting censorship is some kind of remedy to what happened before isn't a solution at all. People have to practice self control, on all sides of course.
Very cool.
I'm really glad that a couple of his friends were there to share that moment with him. It's just a pity that he couldn't keep the demo.
@darkswabber @BladedKnight : The current build of the game is unlikely to be available in a playable state. The E3 version obviously has been curated in such a way so that it is playable (with no buggy or otherwise incomplete content being accessible), whereas a "current build" may have some warts that would need to be ironed out and then processed into a build that can be played, which would take quite a bit of time and only serve to further delay the possibility for Chris to be able to play the game, which is not an ideal outcome due to the uncertainty of his condition.
@Silly_G

That analysis of the unavailability of the full game's build is actually brilliant.
That's awesome. I'm glad Nintendo could make this guy happy.
@saintayu I've been in enough situations where a little bit of censorship goes a long way to prevent problems, but that's just my opinion.
Super!
It's sad that the comments of the last article that was on this topic were so bad that a warning was needed to be put for the comment section...
You're the man, Chris!
Yay Nintendo!
@iLikeUrAttitude --> totally agree, but this is the internet and children like to be trolls.
I Love you, Nintendo !
@Lone_Beagle The sad thing was that it wasn't only children...
Well played Nintendo, the lad looks genuinely happy.
I’m not crying, you’re crying...
I’m really happy for him though!
Absolutely wonderful news! I am glad things worked out this way! I hope he gets to enjoy it, for what time he has left.
"Note: Please be respectful in the comments." - the fact that NL had to mention this at the end though... still kinda makes me upset.
Awwwww this makes me so happy! I’m so happy for him 😊
Glad he got his last wish fulfilled, but definitely still not a fan of it being a public matter. The death of someone should only be of concern for you and people who know you and nor some completely strangers.
Most of you will disagree, but that's how I see it, sorry.
Good on Nintendo. Shame this kind of news never makes it to mainstream media.
Great story and I wish the poor boy all the best. At the end it still is a sad story but Nintendo at least tried to lighten it up a bit.
Nintendo does the right thing,hope he enjoyed it.
@MegaVel91,
Some of the comments on the initial article were cruel imo,and no wonder Nintendo put the message for comments to be respectful.
@AlexSora89,
So true,so true.
@Kimyonaakuma,
If you look at some of the comments in the previous article some people have to be told,which is a shame because this type of article should automatically make people think before they post.
@Rayquaza2510,
The problem with this is that when you state Nintendo only in effect listen to certain people,you are really on talking about them not listening to a very small but very vocal internet minority,who post on internet forums and feel they are entitled for Nintendo to run their company just for themselves.
@johnvboy @MegaVel91 I guess I was lucky enough to stop reading the last comments sections before those people came along...
At least this one seems more positive - which it should be!
This makes me happy.
Note to self... don’t read this stuff while standing at work waiting for customers to start arriving! Seriously made me weepy, well done Nintendo, it costs nothing to be caring and compassionate ❤️
They only let him play the demo for 3 hours. They should make him sign a non-disclosure agreement that he will not leak it and let him keep it.
Let's just pray for Chris and his family.
The look of joy on his face says it all. So glad this happened.
Bless them all for doing this.
This is the meaning of life.
Fantastic.
Hugs for everyone
@darkswabber wow, fancy seeing you here!
@GavinGaile for about 7 years already, 5 years with a account.
How'd I miss this article yesterday? At any rate, I'm so glad he got a chance to play it. Pursuing ways to be kind to others is always the right way to be.
That's awesome!
Well done Nintendo
I am so happy for him! Two thumbs up Nintendo!
I'm really glad that this was a success
@TossedLlama love makes us all better humans.
@johnvboy
And yet, at times I wish I was wrong.
I’m so glad that they were able to do this for him. Also glad to see that the troll kids are staying away from the comments this time.
I'm crying. I'm crying.
Good news! And a real shame that some people where so harsh last time. When I wanted to place a comment it wasn't even possible anymore because things had totally gone south. Shame on you guys. I am just happy for the guy, I hope he enjoyed the game!
I'm not crying, your crying
