Chris Taylor loves video games, and when Nintendo announced Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, he was just as pumped as everyone else - but with a catch. Taylor has terminal cancer and in July made the brave decision to decline any further treatment. He was given between 3 to 6 months to live.
Taylor's comments on social media - which reflect on the fact that he may not be alive when the game arrives this December - have triggered a wave of support from the Nintendo community, and now a campaign has begun to get Taylor - who is effectively bedridden - pre-release access to Smash.
Those involved with the campaign have taken to social media to bring Taylor's plight to the attention of Nintendo of America. We're more than happy to amplify this message on Nintendo Life - so please, join your own voice to this movement and perhaps Taylor will get his wish.

Please Nintendo, Let him play smash.
i agree with everyone on this section, please let this person get his wish its painful for me to hear he has only a few
I'm sympathetic about his circumstances, but if I were on my deathbed, playing video games wouldn't exactly be a priority.
Besides, in heaven, they have Super Smash Bros. Omega with every Nintendo character in existence (except Waluigi, who shall roast in hell, where he wrongly, but oh so rightly belongs).
Make it so!
I can't imagine what he is going through, but if playing Smash can bring respite and fill his final days with joy and happiness, then man, this HAS to happen. So please Nintendo.
Games should not be a priority. Spend the most with family and friends. I’ve had family members and friends past away this year and it’s hard but no way would they ask for something like play a unreleased video game. Humans need humans support more and god forbid anything happens to me or anyone really I hope they choose to spend it with their special ones in their lives more
@1UP_MARIO Mate, let people be themselves. If playing a game helps him sleep at night, then who the heck are you to say he's wrong!?!
People trying to tell him what's more important than games... Stay in your lane. You're horrible. This guy is dying and you're trying to tell him how to live? Shut the hell up. If he wants to play a game, that's good, I understand him. Not everyone has family, or good relations with them. Not everyone wants to spend their last moments purposely making themselves miserable.
@GrailUK in no way am I saying he’s right or wrong
@zet Also maybe his family relations are fine and he wants to play with them. I know if I was dying I'd want one last game of Fortnite with my buddy for a final, glorious Victory Royale! (We play a lot of Fortnite )
@1UP_MARIO Well, it does read like you are telling him what he should be doing.
Just make a current build of the Game like in the E3 and give it to him. It would make it so much better for that person.
This demo could make his final moments special.
I hope he gets his wish and it makes him happy and gives him strength.
@Silly_G shut up
It was heartbreaking watching my father unable to enjoy retirement as cancer ruined his final years. I cannot imagine a kid going through that. Yes spending time with friends and family is of the utmost importance... But people need to understand that cancer also prevents you from being yourself. I watched my father have to abandon his hobbies one by one as he physically could not do them anymore... It was horrible.
Please God, please let Nintendo hear this message, this plea, and let the kid have a little fun while he still can.
Video games are likely important to this kid because it's one of the few fun things left he can do. Someone in that condition certainly cannot go out and play sports, or go bike riding, or to the movies etc... When friends and family visit, what are they supposed to do? Talk about how sad they are and how much pain he is in? Is THAT supposed to make him feel better? I know my father got real sick of all the "I'm sorry"s.
If we can bring smash to college football games i think we can join the make a wish ranks for some kids to be avle to enjoy smash before they go.
@Silly_G You are not him. And I question if you really have any idea what he is going through. While destroying your life, cancer also destroys your life. It takes away your ability to do the things you love. Games are likely very important to him as one of the last things he can enjoy in his position.
I would move the stars them selves if it meant i got to play a new zelda before i pass so this needs to happen. John Cena has dont well over a 100 wishes you could get multiple kids on this forsure. Come on Big N
Oh geez. I know it's only video games, but the thought of not being able to experience something knowing your days are numbered is haunting. I don't know what his chances are for getting hold of Smash, but I hope someone at Nintendo hears him out.
@Silly_G That's right, how dare you state that famiy is more important than videogames! Like, If I had to choose between the lives of my relatives and my Switch, of course I WOULD CHOOSE THE VIDEOGAMES! ISN'T THAT RIGHT GUYS!? RIGHT!? -_-
@Sebas That's not the point. The point is this person wants to experience something he loves before he dies. He probably has has his family with him and doesn't have to choose between a switch and the family. How can you be so insensitive to this man's wishes just because he wants to play a game he loves. Who are you to say what this man wants anyway. And smash it is multiplayer he can play with his family.
Not to sound horrible but... He's not just lying to get an early copy right?
"Thank you for the early copy of Smash Nintendo! I've posted everything on my YouTube channel! Oh, and I got better! Thanks for helping me get the game first everyone!"
@Sebas Erm...why have you adopted a narrative of him having to choose between family and video games. His family are probably doing everything they can to help him realise his wish because that's what friends and family do. I don't understand you.
@1UP_MARIO
Let him play smash Bros once it can.
If I was a developer, I'd be pretty hacked off if I was trying to finish off a game and then an Internet campaign started pressuring me to finish it even earlier just so that one particular person might be able to play it before they die.
There are thousands of people dying every day. We're all gonna die, and we don't know when. But Sakurai and Co have to rush the completion of their game because a pocket of the internet says one kid deserves it?
Solution: Don't decline cancer treatment. Calling that 'brave' is an interesting choice, NL.
@gcunit I understand what you mean, but it's hard to say no to someone in a situation like this. There's also the possibility that if Nintendo did give this guy an early demo of Smash and news spreads, a whole bunch of other people (faking illness or not) will try to bandwagon this idea (not just for Smash, but future games too.)
In the end, it's Nintendo's decision. I just hope people don't immediately brand them as cold-hearted. There's pros and cons to this sort of thing.
@BlakeMorris better yet: don't get cancer in the first place. Smh.
@zet Why, of course! Why didn't he do that?
Thousands of people are dying evey day. In most cases, only their friends and family know about their deaths, in some cases people are so lonely, that even NOBODY know about their deaths.
So why should someone get some special treatment from totally strangers? Just because he posted something online und now you think you "know" him?🤨 Sorry, that's kinda bull!
I know this sounds coldhearted, but that's how I see it.
@VexingInsanity @GrailUK I kinda got mad when a few people above suggested that videogames should not be the top priority right now and everyone else is like "you can't tell him what to do!!! If videogames are his life, then so be it!!". Im a very big fan of Smash myself, but I just can't put myself in his shoes. Also:
"Im dying.... better tell everyone in the internet how sad I am about not getting Smash... multiple times"
Can they at least get this poor kid to a place where he can try that demo that’s been floating around since E3? The full game would be nice (though maybe not feasible), but the demo is better than nothing. I can’t imagine what it’s like to be in his position, knowing that in three months you may not be alive anymore. To those being heartless and insensitive, I truly hope you nor anyone you love ends up terminally ill. And heaven forbid if you do, I hope nobody treats you poorly or speaks about you in the same manner you criticize this dying child.
@Anti-Matter your right let him play. It’s just when people are suffering social media or the internet is not the best place to find emotional support
@thesilverbrick Well said Mr Brick.
@thesilverbrick In three months, you may not be alive anymore either. I think you should get to play it early too, you poor thing.
@Sebas Are you intentionally being a rude and foolish or what? In what way would this be choosing video game OVER his family? That's a load of rubbish and I think you know full well that it is. The kid is dying, he is bed ridden. Why shouldn't he want a chance to enjoy one of the few hobbies he has left? How would playing a game deny him his family?
You think the kids wants to sit in a bland white hospital room and just talk about how much pain he is in? To listen to his family members talk about all the fun things that he himself will never experience? Have you ever known someone with a terminal illness? Is that how they wanted to spend their final days?
@gcunit Don’t be ridiculous. Of course anything can happen to anyone. But there’s a huge difference between our kind of “uncertainty” and a terminal cancer diagnosis. Trying to compare the two is idiotic and makes you look like an absolute fool.
@Sebas are you suggesting that because he is dying he shouldn't be allowed to speak his mind? To have regrets? Who are you to judge the things he cares about, what his regrets are?
Life is a terminal illness. We should all petition Sakurai to let us play the game now in case we're not alive come December. And let's ask them to pay our medical bills too while we're at it, we're dying here.
@thesilverbrick OK TC.
It would be interesting to see how society would change if a few more people could review their perspective on death and not get so triggered by the C-word.
Now excuse me, but I'm off to write to Lucasfilm to ask them to let me see Star Wars Ep. 9 being produced in case I'm not here next year.
😭😭

@gcunit Life is not an illness you weirdo!
@gcunit it is but how many of us share it via twitter or Facebook.
I don’t wanna sound like the bad guy. I’ve experienced special people in my life go away and it’s really something hard for family’s to recover from but sharing these should be among family’s and loved ones and not social media.
There are a lot of kids that would love to go Disney world and share their emotions online and would love sponsors, why should one have to leave this world and suffer something unpredictable and share it with the world to get attention of their desire
I know it sounds bad but the worlds not all beautiful
Nintendo, Make it happen.
Look at all the comments here of people who are jealous of a boy with terminal cancer. Nintendo fans are the saddest people on earth.
@gcunit Please point out where this kid is even asking for anything. He’s bedridden and simply remarking that he might never get to play the game. He’s not demanding or even requesting to play it. If you’re bothered by the harmless musings of a terminally ill person, you’re either sociopathic or possibly jealous of the attention a sick child is getting. Seriously, something is wrong with you.
@1UP_MARIO Man he can play smash with his family...
As a two time cancer survivor myself, I sincerely hope he gets his wish.
I think this is one of those articles where folk should really think through their comment before posting it, otherwise it could get nasty quick.
I hope Nintendo grants his wish.
Surely a Nintendo rep could visit him with the build that is going to be in some cities for folks to play. Where’s the Make A Wish Foundation?
Some folks here just need to calm down, too. On both sides.
@Fearful-Octopus A women at treehouse responded to him
@ActiSwitch Good.
They made it happen for a Zelda fan who sadly passed before Botw. Nintendo will make it happen they are understanding and good guys when it comes to things like this.
Some of you have an almost nihilist attitude towards the guy. Yes, we all will die eventually, yes some faster/suddenly than others unfortunately. Doesn't mean on his way out he can't find a little happiness like a video game, time with family, or both such as playing the game with the family. This doesn't affect any of you, just instead tells us that some are indifferent, others compassionate, and still others cold. Whether that's by your nature, or experiences in life, live and let live.
I've buried a child after watching her struggle for 5 years against leukaemia.
Some of you here make me sick.
I like nintendo life as it is usually a nice place in a internet that is often filled with nastiness and hate. It is really disappointing to see that so clearly on show in such a normally friendly place. Although it is heartening to see so many of the usual commentators come out so strongly in support of being a kind human being. And to those that have lost close ones and find some of the comments hurtful many of us here share your pain.
Retweeted. It's the kid's last wish and he's going to die way too young, make it happen Nintendo!
@JHDK Assassin's Creed or Animal Crossing?
@ClayTB : I lol'ed. I would love for Waluigi to get his own casino and/or heist sim franchise though.
https://twitter.com/SpookyWoobler/status/1040418102322909184?s=19
@gcunit : Due to the sensitive nature of the topic, I think people are letting their emotions cloud their judgement. I can see where everyone is coming from, but the emotional ones seem blindsided either by past experiences (and therefore taking some of the comments as personal attacks when they are not) or because they have been conditioned to condemn any opinions that do not conform to current rhetorical convention.
Death does not discriminate, and as I said before, I am sympathetic to the guy. If he was a friend or relative, I would accompany him and stick by his side for as long as it takes, and while I would not expect to be treated in kind if similar circumstances were to befall me, I would not want to desert one in their hour of need, but it is completely unreasonable to expect perfect strangers to bend over backwards when there are plenty of others in the same predicament.
Ultimately, we shall all perish. There is so much more to despair about than something as frivolous as a video game.
@MrBlacky well that’s how I see. Should more people share this on social media.
If Nintendo finds out about it in time, they should give him a current build on a cartridge or something. I understand it’s not done, but at this point it’s gotta be really close. These things tend to happen a lot as unfortunate as they are. I saw a story about Ryan Reynolds visiting a teenager who had cancer and gave him a work-in-progress cut of Deadpool 2. It was very sweet.
@JHDK this guy is dieing not a joking. Matter just remember karma.always comes back
To all the negative people karma just remember karma always wins.and for the ones who are downing this person who is dieing and might be gone before the release.I wish the same for you.
Hopefully Nintendo can grant his wish. I mean, they have special smash trucks going to college campuses to promote the game and allow people to play. No reason they can’t at least bring whatever version they are using for the gaming trucks for this kid to play on a Switch.
Woo hoo! YAY NINTENDOLIFE!
I'm so glad you're spreading the word too. Now given the site may weigh a bit more than my own voice, things might finally pick up. What Chris asked is not that much out there after all.
Nintendo, please listen to us!
@JHDK
Wow, I can't even articulate a proper response to this. It's wrong on so many levels, let alone the fact that while Ultimate is merely receiving finishing touches, it [EDIT: "it" being Animal Crossing, I wasn't reasoning at the time of writing] won't be out any sooner than next spring at the absolute earliest.
It can't even qualify as a joke, sorry.
@Slim1999 Don’t actively wish for people to die. That’s ignorant.
Giving him the chance to play early Ultimate is great and free PR, i don't see why Nintendo can't do it. He and his family will just have to sign a NDC. Its been done before.
Holy crap... Reading all these comments ruined my day. I didn't know there were so many douchebags in this website. I hope you never have someone close to you with terminal cancer( yeh, I have, and let me tell you, it's not as glamorous as you people are sounding it to be )
@zet sure, limited time what difference does it make so long as someone or something can make you happy? Reminds me of that star wars fan. I hope Nintendo does the right thing and gives him early access.
@Silly_G @gcunit Are you really this stupid? Let me spell it out for you.
There's a difference between a kid dying of terminal cancer and someone older than him having terminal cancer. The latter have lived longer and gotten to experience more than him, but this kid is going to die and not be able to experience a whole life's worth of things and video games happen to be one of the things he loves.
Using phrases like "People are drying everyday" or "Death does not discrimate" or "We all shall someday perish" as excuses to brush away a kid's dying wishes...How emotionally dead in the head can you be?
Cause while those phrases are true, they're worthless statements that have been uttered so many a time as to be merit-less. They show your utter lack of empathy and abundance of cold indifference.
@thesilverbrick “To those being heartless and insensitive, I truly hope you nor anyone you love ends up terminally ill. And heaven forbid if you do, I hope nobody treats you poorly or speaks about you in the same manner you criticize this dying child.”
Thank you for once again stepping in and making some sense, I was worried I wouldn’t find any in here.
I hope there’s a way for him to play it, even if it’s just a demo.
@MrBlacky well congrats you do come off as cold hearted and terrible. Glad I don't know you irl.
@clvr I did have people past away and more recently but didn’t really share it on social media. We have a big family and support each other and friends and don’t really share our problems on Facebook or twitter.
That's heart breaking and really puts things into perspective.
@1UP_MARIO
Different families have different habits.
Maybe peoples from your family don't have tendency with social media, but other families might be have different habits than your families.
Let them do what they need for the best effort while you & your family members can do what you usually do without bothering them.
I really wish that kid can enjoy his playing time while it last.
@1UP_MARIO ehm...ok?
I don’t wanna sound rude or what, but I don’t get what that has to do with what I said 😅
I tend to agree with you about sharing this kind of stories on social media (heck, I’ve never used any, so yeah, I’m pretty contrary to them), but I never said anything about it.
@clvr Thanks for that. It astounds me that anybody could be anything other than sympathetic for somebody so young dying of cancer. And you would hope that even if somebody wasn’t enthusiastic about something as simple and harmless as letting a dying person play a video game, they would at least just ignore the article and move on. The fact that basic human compassion is so fundamentally foreign to certain people is beyond me.
I don't know about the full game, but wouldn't a special demo, like a later build of the E3 demo, be feasible? In any case, I support this campaign. Cancer is truly horrible and tends to show up in even the healthiest people.
God bless this young man and his family in this rough time.
@Kirby_Girl
Hope you spend at least every minute in your life mourning for someone's dead. If not, you're some big a** hypocrite.
@Tyranexx
Maybe Nintendo can use their Demo game from E3 2018 before.
At least that kid can play even just a little portion of the game.
@zet
Tell 'em!
@MattFox
I happen to have two people in my family that are struggling (with exactly opposite attitudes towards it, in case you're curious) against the illness (hopefully not on a terminal basis), so I related to the kid immediately. That's why I've been making some noise on NintendoLife yesterday.
Even if getting a retail copy of the game for him might be a bit of a stretch, I think a fully playable demo cartridge and a sizzle reel of all the unannounced newcomers can be easily feasible.
As for @gcunit's stance on the topic - I got cut by a glass shard while on my (now lost, go figure) job two weeks ago. Three centimeters closer to my wrist, and I might not be typing this right now. Does this mean I want to actively play Smash Ultimate now "because you never know"? No, I'll wait as everyone else does, because I've been the one making a mistake. Then, does this mean all Smash fans dying of cancer should get to play the game? Not necessarily, as some of them might want to spend their last few months in other ways. Does this mean this kid in particular deserves to play the game? HELL YES HE DOES. Because Smash is so important to him, that if this is the way he wants to go, I say this is the way he deserves to go. Same applies, of course, to everyone in his exact condition (bodily and mental), as going without experiencing this would be a regret he doesn't want to take to his grave.
I get the feeling the apathy in some comments hails not from people getting good things (if you can even call the reason for early access to the game a good thing, you nutjob), but from people getting good things instead of other people. If you truly believe that Chris stepped on your toes by making a choice on how he intends to live his last moments on Earth, then before telling him how to live his life you should get one yourself.
Alex out.
@MegaVel91 : There is a difference between coldness/indifference and being realistic about the inevitable/indiscriminate nature of death. You know nothing of us nor do you know anything about what we have experienced in this respect, so you are not in any position to be making assumptions about our compassion towards others (and this is hardly the appropriate forum to discuss such personal matters).
Every human being will struggle and every human being shall be tested, be it mentally, physically, emotionally etc. I do not begrudge the boy of anything, and I hope he gets what he seeks, but the world isn't rotating on the axis of one cancer patient's desire to play a video game. I have noted that the sensitive nature of this topic will provoke some emotional responses, but acting hysterically over a person who clearly has a strong support network when so many others (as noted above) may have no support network at all is quite frankly, ridiculous. We are living in an age where the elderly are committed to homes to die in humiliation and solitude; where people die in their homes and aren't discovered until the stench of their rotting corpse becomes unbearable to their neighbours; where suicide and mental illness (especially among young people) are at levels never before seen in human history; where the wider public show complete apathy and indifference to defenceless people (including children) that are senselessly murdered, having the audacity to brush off these atrocities as “collateral damage”. There is no such thing as a "necessary evil", and there is no justification whatsoever for civilians to be targeted.
People need to get their priorities in order before making judgements on other people’s sense of morality and behaving so hysterically over a boy who even has the luxury of playing video games, cancer or no cancer. Put your money where your mouth is and visit the sick who have nobody to accompany them in their dying days if you are the beacon of empathy that you claim to be. Was their crime that they hadn’t broadcast their plight on social media?
I do not know where you stand on the topic of eschatology, however I do not perceive this finite plane of existence as the be all and end all of us, so I do not share the worldview of those who wish to experience the many pleasures that this world has to offer before they die. There are important philosophical matters that we could be discussing here if people would stop taking things so personally and attacking people that they know absolutely nothing about. Alas…
Ladies and gentlemen! I bring you! The comment section of Nintendolife!
I don't want to be rude, but who is he? Why he should get special treatment?
There are still many people who are going to pass away. So does he. But asking for playing an unreleased game is not right and not fair. Instead of playing the game, he should be with his family. That's more important.
Imagine if his wish was fulfilled, people would do the same thing as him just to play the game early. Note that he's still able to use Twitter (or somebody on behalf of him), so IF he could play the game early, he would leak the game content (before he dies). That's not good.
I am absolutely shocked by this almost 50/50 perspective people have on this situation, around 1/2 seem to think he shouldn’t get to play even the demo that has been floating around at Best Buys and Conventions, and then the other 1/2 thinks he SHOULD be able to get a chance to play a demo.
This guy is gonna die soon, all he wants to do is play Smash Ultimate even if it is just 1 round, just have Best Buy help out set up a demo session for him, or heck, if Nintendo is feeling especially generous, fly him out to Seattle where they can have a demo for him there.
@Silly_G Your so-called realism is a facade just to hide the fact you lack any real sense of compassion, and based on your utterly bloated response, you're only here to sharpen your ego.
I'll say it again, your use of this "inevitability of death" rhetoric is without merit and entirely worthless. Everybody knows death is inevitable, but most people want a fulfilling life, that's why they derive pleasure from things like this, but based on your response, you completely lack the ability to comprehend this.
@Silly_G
"was their crime that they hadn’t broadcast their plight on social media?"
Not at all. But you have to argue that if your dream game was about to come out and you couldn't get to play it and you couldn't do anything to live just two months longer... wouldn't you at least wish for it to come out sooner? You know, what with Nintendo being more eager to comply than, I don't know... death?
Besides, Chris Taylor merely voiced his fear of dying in his original tweet; who kickstarted the movement is his friend Alex Rochon (no relation).
Besides, the whole "then why don't you [X]" thing to me is just another excuse for getting mad because someone is cutting the line he was supposed to "respect", and to that angle I can't help but wholeheartedly ask said people to grow up. No, @windyboy, I'm Italian, I don't know the guy in person. But I wanted to help and I'm trying to do so. In front of death - what is supposed to make people equal more than anything - we should put aside those differences. The petty "why the special treatment?" comments I see are honestly making me lose hope in humanity.
@diwdiws
For better or for worse.
@windyboy "That's more important.
Imagine if his wish was fulfilled, people would do the same thing as him just to play the game early."
Yes, I agree. People will get cancer so they can play games early. Why didnt I think of that?
@Silly_G Using the fact that other people have it worse than this kid as an excuse to not show sympathy is as senseless as it is lame. Nobody here is in any way making the case that the people who suffer the clearly worse atrocities you listed are not worthy of sympathy and support. This article only appeared on this website because it relates to Nintendo, the overall topic discussed here every day. You can bet that if articles pertaining to the other crimes against humanity you listed were to surface here, there would be an outpouring of support for those people, as well. Holding back sympathy or basic human decency because “other people have it worse” is as ridiculous as telling someone they have no right to be happy about their current condition because “somebody else has it better”.
Imagine trying to play Devil's Advocate for a situation like this
If nintendo grants his wish, i will love them even more. Let him play with a character wich hasnt been revealed yet. If there are still more, or the secret new (story) mode
@thesilverbrick : That was not the point at all. I briefly addressed the topic at hand and was attacked for it, and then I felt compelled to address the topic of death more broadly. At no point did I indicate that the boy should not be shown sympathy for his plight (I indicated that if he were someone known to me, I would accompany him), but the misdirected hysteria demonstrated by some here is completely unwarranted and some people need to grow up and put things into perspective.
@AlexSora89 : My argument was in response to the commenter's self-righteous indignation and complete lack of perspective and decency (whilst claiming to be a model of empathy and compassion). As I stated before, I do not begrudge the boy, and it wouldn't be difficult for Nintendo to issue him a demo copy. It would be a great PR move (it could also be disastrous for PR if they don't). Now, I didn't want to raise the PR issue earlier, because it is a cynical one and may be perceived as trivialising the plight of the boy. Nevertheless, I suppose time will tell whether Nintendo will respond appropriately.
@Silly_G Exactly what kind of “hysteria” has been demonstrated here?
It's heartbreaking but if the game isn't ready they probably won't do it, if he doesn't live long enough maybe Nintendo should let him make a request for a future character to be added to the game.
@Silly_G
I've taken a look at all sides of the matter we're discussing, but even on a most cynical standpoint I - taking into account the very same PR angle you mentioned - can't help but side with the boy. Good to him if he gets to go out with a smile, right?
Wow, never did I expect this community to be anything other than supportive of a peer (another Nindy fan) who is dying.
Is it so hard to spare some kindness for a young life about to be cut short?
Don't all of us deserve a little compassion in the end?
And then those presumptuous enough to tell this person how best to die, or nihilists professing it's just another death, nothing to see here...
Ugh. Just ugh.
Please friends, care more and judge less.
Chris Taylor, if you're reading this, please forgive the short-sighted among us and just rock on to the very end. Power and glory to you, brother. I truly hope you do get to enjoy Smash, and whatever else that brightens the day for you and your family. <3
@Silly_G
Um....
With my Limitation English understanding, is he (that kid) not allowed to have his last wish before he pass away ?
@AlexSora89 : Of course. As I mentioned though, it wouldn't be difficult for Nintendo to issue an exclusive download at the very least and would be (as much as I hate to say this) great pre-launch publicity, especially due to the sympathetic and sensitive nature of the matter at hand.
Ugh. I've held back on mentioning the whole PR thing until now and I hate myself for it because it is very cynical. Nevertheless, I extend my best wishes to the boy and his family and hope that if there is any possibility, that he recovers.
I have a young cousin who has been in a vegetative state for over 10 years now so I hate to see young lives being cut short (or otherwise destroyed).
@Anti-Matter : Simply put, the boy is requesting a copy of Smash Ultimate from Nintendo as he has terminal cancer and may not be alive (or physically capable) of playing the game by the time it releases.
While it is extremely unlikely that Nintendo will have a final build ready, they can surely send him a demo copy to play (either as a cartridge or a download).
This is not an issue of whether he is "allowed" to or not, but it may not be entirely feasible to do so. I have a feeling that Nintendo will pull through though.
Nintendo has not yet issued a response.
@Silly_G
Don't hate yourself for that. As a matter of fact, PR (good or otherwise) will be a consequence to this campaign. It's a fact, period.
What I meant by cynicism is simply boiling down to the facts without emotion. People don't care about the kid? Okay, cynical people exist (although I wouldn't expect one to pop up as early as the second comment, sadly), but even then - when all is said and done - getting this kid a copy would be extremely good PR (maybe taking the game's all-stars approach into account as something you just have to experience).
Not wanting the kid to "cut the line" is apathic on an emphatic level and downright idiotic on a practical/cynical level.
@Silly_G All of us should bend over backwards for strangers, because it's what's right. Actual love is about sacrifice, and we should love every single person. What you don't do for the least of these you haven't done for my brother. If someone has the resources to do something for others, then they SHOULD do it for others, because that's what we're told to do.
@MegaVel91 Boo hoo, How many other kids are also dying from some kind of disease or illness. I don't understand how dying can justify being self-centered or given any kind of special treatment. This is coming from a guy who almost died multiple time and might have cancer. While I do feel sad a kid has to go through that, I will never agree with using one's own death as a means to get something.
I feel bad for the boy who is gonna die of cancer, but I'm glad they're making a campaign to make his final wish come true.
And for the commentors here who say he's faking it or doesn't deserve it... How can you people be so heartless?
@Silly_G although i agree with you that playing video games on my deathbed wouldnt be my priority, i feel that smash ultimate is (or smash in general) very special to a lot of people, and it must have been a very big source of joy in his life so i cant help but feel sympathetic to his situation and his desire to play the game
@BlakeMorris from what ive heard, cancer treatment is absolute hell, and hardly helps in terms of long term feasability so i dont blame him on his choice
If it is not just a fraud to get smash early, why he declined the tratament? If smash is REALLY important to him, why he don't use the tratament to extend his estimative of life? Are some explanation about it?
Things showed are not making sense to me. I am not seeing someone which is really using his chances to play the game. Sorry if it looks cinical but in my country, cases like this most of time are fraud. So, I always think a lot about.
Probably, the best solution is sent to the person the demo avaliable at best buy shops.
@MattFox Same can be said about people like you.
Oh geez didn't expect to wake up to this feels trip. I think most of us here agree that something can be done to allow this person to play before passing. I really wish I could do something myself but I haven't even pre-ordered the game yet! Hopefully we get a happy and successful follow up to this story!
Welp, I just skimmed through some of the comments above me... this site's comment sections are getting worse and worse everyday...
I remember reading a similar story with Breath of the Wild and they let this guy play it before he died before it released. So I have no doubt they will let this guy play it. It was extremely sad though.
@-Juice- : Ideally, yes, we should be unconditionally kind to our brothers and sisters in humanity. Sadly, I don't think it is realistic to expect it from others though. Oftentimes, we are hurt by the people we love most (and we may regrettably find ourselves doing the same if we do not reflect on our treatment of others).
@Silly_G
You hate that you are being judged yet do an enormous amount of it yourself. How do you know who visits the sick, takes care of the elderly? You call those who disagree with your take hysterical.
You have decided what should be important to a dying child.
I'll tell you one of the things that broke my heart when our K8 died: she was a Harry Potter fanatic. She loved those books. I'd buy them, bring them home and she'd squirrel away in her room for 24 hours, devouring the story.
She was diagnosed March 16, 2001 and died on Nov 20, 2005. It upset me so much that she didn't live to find out how it all ended. Trivial? Perhaps, but it mattered to me more than I can say.
Your philosophical take is intelligent and well said. But I had almost 5 years in the trenches and lived it. It almost destroyed me when she died. Whataboutism is meaningless, imho. Peace.
@AlexSora89 based on the asinine comments of some people here, for worse apparently
@Zuljaras That's what it sounds like he is asking for. I know several Best Buy had them but for me and likely him they were impossible to get to. As for people telling him what to do he is likely already spending time with family and friends. This sounds like a Make a Wish bucket list request is all. I think he would be ecstatic to try the E3 build. Some would want to see distant lands or just Disneyland his request seems easier but requires Nintendo's help.
Ive always had empathy with thinking about the people who pass away before they get to play a game or watch a movie they have wanted to.
.... I'm on the fence with this.
If he does have terminal cancer, hope Nintendo listens and gives him a copy of the E3 demo. The full game is still not out yet and still being worked on. And he gets to enjoy the game, being able to play it with his best buds.
If he doesn't have this and just wants to get the game early.... Well no harm done with being an E3 demo and shame on him.
I hope he and others like him, get that chance to play Smash Ultimate before their time.
People, just give it up! This debating back and forth is going nowhere and all it's achieving is making some people upset. There is no debate to be had here.
@Balchad
"Boo hoo??"
Would you say that to Chris' face?
Or to his parents or siblings?
How about when he's on life support?
The world has enough grief, why add to it?
There's a demo version.
Man, it almost laughable when people try to disguise their nihilism and cynicism as "realism". And when you really dig down to the core of it, their rhetoric is entrenched in apathy or resentment.
And the only way to make themselves feel better about their perspective is to make everyone else look like the bad guy for having the audacity to care.
@Teksetter I would never say that to his face because I don't like making fun of dying people. But I sure a hell won't agree to his terms even if he is dying. As bad as it is that he has to experience this at such a young age, I still believe using one's health as an excuse to gain something is wrong and I will never support it. I also don't understand why he would put something like this online unless it is to get publicity but I guess people will hate me for being too cynical and their own self-righteous what not.
@HobbitGamer lol saying a kid don't deserve to have his final wish granted is worse then karma.like it or not karma will bite people just facts
People don't like my comment o well.karma to all the bad comments.
@Balchad voodoo curse to you right along with karma bad karma
@Slim1999 When you put a voodoo curse on someone, does that have any effect on the whole good/bad karma thingy?
@Slim1999 Don't you worry buddy, I'll share any bad karma you get from doing your voodoo curse. Some people do deserve it.
@k8sMum : I wish you every ease and comfort, and I thank you for sharing your story.
What I have been pointing out time and time again during this conversation is that people are being short-sighted and not viewing the reality of death with an open mind and with a rational perspective. I am not referring to people as being hysterical for disagreeing with me. I am all for difference of opinion, but when people are resorting to personal attacks and insulting others for expressing a point of view that they may disagree with is counterintuitive and weakens any argument that they may have to make.
In mentioning the sick, elderly, troubled, and those caught in the crossfire, I was posing a question of moral integrity to a person who has made inflammatory and presumptuous judgements as to where I stand on the matter. They know nothing of me and yet they saw fit to disparage my sense of compassion to humanity and to all of creation based on their myopic reading of my previous comments.
And there have been several comments suggesting that the boy in question is a child. He is in his late teens at the very least, but appears to be a grown man judging by his Twitter page. I cannot say with any certainty (hence why I have simply been referring to him as a boy), and it isn't relevant, really (given his unfortunate circumstances), but we are not discussing the wishes of a dying child here, so I have at no point intended to suggest what a child should consider to be important under such circumstances, which is what you have touched upon in speaking about your relationship with your daughter. Obviously the needs, wishes, and priorities of a child are quite different to a person that has come of age.
I would not describe your situation with your daughter as trivial by any stretch of the imagination. Superficially, yes, she was a Harry Potter fanatic, but the important thing to take from this is that it was a means by which you two have bonded, and that is something precious. The tragedy of your circumstances is that the dreams that you have both had have been unfulfilled (that is, to see the story to completion), so I completely understand why this is so important to you.
Similarly, I try to bond with my sister (who suffers from physiological/intellectual disabilities) through Pokémon for example (I bought her a 2DS with Sun version). She's very slow at it, her poor mobility and coordination makes it difficult for her to use the circle pad (she also has strabismus; i.e. permanently cross-eyed), but she is halfway through the game and I am very proud of her for doing it herself. I also hope that it will improve her reading as she has been out of school for 13 years now and does not actively read literature.
Once again, I thank you for sharing your story, and I doubt that it will be of much consolation, but I hope your heart is spared of pain and anguish.
@1UP_MARIO how do you know? Are you on your Deathbed? If this is what the kid wants so be it. He's not saying he doesn't want to spend time with his family too he's just saying he wishes he was going to be alive to play this game and maybe there's some way he will get to play this game before he dies. dont be a jerk.
@FlashBoomerang cancer treatments are miserable and if he's terminal they probably aren't working anymore and are just making him sicker and his remaining days unbearable. Sometimes the expensive treatment just isn't worth it after a certain point when nothing working really be done
Why the f would he cancel treatment??? But this is the saddest thing I’ve read all day....
@GrailUK Hopefully he can play it in heaven.
@Zelda_Geek "Terminal illness is an INCURABLE disease that cannot be adequately treated and is reasonably expected to result in the death of the patient. This term is more commonly used for progressive diseases such as cancer or advanced heart disease than for trauma."
@Zelda_Geek Most of the conventional treatments for cancer can be not only painful, but physically draining and often just stall the inevitable, usually with horrible side effects. It’s not at all uncommon for long time victims of cancer to just give up treatment and die (relatively) peacefully after months or years of agony.
@zet Preach.
@thesilverbrick @MattFox Oh.....
I am a monster....
@MattFox You can tell which people never had to see someone suffer. One in particular should be making this comment section better not adding to the chaos.
To all those stating the patient should be spending time with family, maybe, the patient wants to play with family. Smash is my most played series with family and friends.
If there was one thing I could eliminate from this would (besides bullies) it would be cancer, all all kinds of it.
You see kids, THIS is why you don’t make jokes like “this video gave me cancer” or “this post gave me aids.”
@Zelda_Geek Then polio would rise from the ashes and take over the world once again. Deadly illnesses are like street gangs; when the top dog is taken down, another will try to take its place.
If you take a little time to look around it's easy to see why people refuse treatment. It's very easy now with social media, like this case. It's also a miserable way to spend your evening unless it personally touches you.
The general idea is similar to I could die next month but I'll have some chance to enjoy it or I could die in 6 months and I'm so sick I'll be miserable the entire time. In fat, I might not really be awake. I'm also under the impression that often cancer doesn't exactly kill you but something like pneumonia does because your body is ravaged by treatment. That's how I saw it go, at least. Cancer is a really varied thing. Drawing a conclusion from a few facts probably won't be accurate.
In this case a kid going through something miserable got lucky in a narrow sense and his story got picked up. Good for him. I hope it works out as well as it can. At this stage I imagine they can fly out a guy with a build for a day or something. I don't develop games, but if some kids wanted something we did and we had a technically feasible build we'd be in the next plane out following conversations mature adults understand will happen surrounding something like this.
It's understood it has to be possible and verified. That's not really the conversation, I imagine.
@Slavepika420 @MattFox I understand which the price and the pain of the tratament is not worthy because the survival rate is low, but let me explain something too: the tax is low but not zero.
The doctors said to the mother of my friend which she had just 3 months of life because she had terminal cancer. But was another doctor who insisted was a chance and she could be saved. Was with this doctor she did his tratamemt. It was 12 years ago. She yet is alive.
@JHDK ...NO. -_-
Hope his dying wish comes true. I pray for the best for him.
I stepped on a lego. Can i play Metroid Prime 4 please?
It would be generous of Nintendo to allow him to play it. I hope it happens!
@TossedLlama we all love you too.
Great comment
@Balchad
"Death being used as means to get something" might well be the crowning, single most disrespectful, insensitive, and outright disgusting take on the subject I've had the displeasure of witnessing (and, given today's track record, is really saying something). Has it ever occurred to you that maybe, just maybe, "getting something" is a bit of a pyrrhic victory given that he wouldn't get to enjoy the game as long as we're going to?
Not to mention that, while Nintendo would have every interest - moral and otherwise - in giving Chris the chance to own Ultimate pre-release, they're still in position to make him sign a NDA. (If you posit that the NDA would be a moot point with so little left to live, said agreement could come with enough of a financial incentive for the family to be worth the non-disclosure in question.)
@diwdiws
You have no idea how some comments caught me off guard. The same userbase that united when we all were grieving for Iwata, is now - partially, thankfully - kicking someone when he's down. A total disappointment.
@Incarta
It's not like that thought never crossed my mind at all, but it went away just as quickly as it came. Think about it for a second: what advantage would Chris get from "crying wolf" about his own death? Just to make sure he won't get his death wish when his demise eventually comes for real? Not even the most cynical and rabid fans would ever think of that, as that would count as crying wolf on the entire Nintendo community's behalf. Burning a bridge you have to cross later is one thing, but doing that and damaging an entire userbase is quite another. While shaming us all with a fake cancer diagnosis would make us Nintendo fans even more of a pariah than we are to Nintendo's detractors, the fact we're even discussing if the campaign is "right" or not is a "never change, Nintendo fans" moment.
Chris' tweets have been going on for a while long before he mentioned the fear of the pre-Smash wait outliving him.
@MsJubilee
If you come up with that kind of comment you deserve to have stepped on a Lego. Where's @CharlieSmile when you need her?
@TossedLlama
Choke on your popcorn.That reply had rather unfortunate timing, I'm pretty mad right now.@Silly_G Good points. I think some (possibly myself included) saw your initial response as a fairly one sided comment on where his priorities were at regardless of being a child or young adult. I'd say it's highly likely that he is spending time with family and friends as regardless of faith or being agnostic familial bonds are something most of us hold dearly. It seems to me at least that this is a bucket list type of request that he would like to do or try before passing on but is outside of his ability to do on his own short of Nintendo providing him the ability to try the E3 build. If it truly was his only desire to play Smash Bros Ultimate in this existence then I would think that would be sad and like a few others have said he would have likely chosen to continue treatment to just extend his life long enough to play the final game. But I don't think that that is his goal here.
Personally as a young dad myself I have only had my grandfather pass away a few years back at 81. He was actually more like a dad to me because my parents separated when I was eight and he filled that role for me. For me gaming has been a casual pastime I like to do with friends and family. There are always great games to look forward to and many good memories I have from them with family and friends. I have faith that God exists and there is more to our existence after this life and that I'll see the most important people to me like my grandfather again. If I were in his position I would probably have the attitude of that it would be nice to play Smash Bros Ultimate, but I would definitely want to also spend good times with friends and family outside of gaming as well.
@k8sMum
I've seen you before on NintendoLife but never quite understood the username until now. Your daughter is up there and - in the same afterlife scenario @Silly_G half-jokingly suggested - might have seen Harry Potter movies we've yet to see. You're an awesome mom, and that will never change, regardless of whether the kids we raise are still around or not.
My warmest hug goes to you all.
Sickens me how selfish people can be. Let the boy have his final wish, Make-A-Wish does these sorts of requests all the time, giving kids early access to movies or games. Yes, death sucks and we’ll all die. That doesn’t mean denying someone a final request if it’s feasible. There’s enough sadness in his life even when his family is around, I’m sure. It’s hard to watch a loved one go away. But a fun experience like this let’s the loved ones build one more memory with him, and it let’s him have a little fun. We’re all going to get a ton of time with this game in a few months, just freakin let him have a little time with it. It doesn’t have to be a FINISHED copy, there are demo kiosks touring the country, let him play one of those at least (though the latest build would work too, the game is in its final debugging stages by now and they’ll have builds along the way).
This is rather heartbreaking... Please, Nintendo, allow this dude the opportunity to make the most out of whatever time he has left. Cover up his social media so he doesn't spoil anything? Fine. Just give him this oppurtuntiy
Is there a reaction from Nintendos side?
@Silly_G,
But you are not on your deathbed so you have no idea of what you would want.
@ShadJV ,
Exactly...people would rather complain about online services and SD card storage...they just need to get a grip and realize their problems are trifling at best.
@MsJubilee I don’t think you understand. HE HAS TERMINAL CANCER!!!!
@AlexSora89 Well too bad, but that's reality and that is how I see it. Like seriously why would he even post something like this if not for publicity. I will admit that what I have said is cynical and rude but I will stand by what I said whether you like it or not. I do not understand what is so special about him that we can just ignore all the other dying kids who want something but can't. It is extremely hypocritical that we treat one better but not the others. I might also be dying soon but you won't be seeing me asking someone to do something for me especially someone big as Nintendo. It's selfish and I see no other word for it.
@TossedLlama
HA! MY SHEER RAGE WAS ENOUGH TO KNOW I WAS ONTO SOMETh--wait, are you serious?
I take it you want to take a neutral stance on the topic, and that's okay. As for me, I hope something will be achieved in some form.
@JHDK That's really insensitive. Last I checked, stubbing a toe is NOT A TERMINAL ILLNESS. Do you know what TERMINAL means? It means the end, it means fatal, it means you don't have much time left to live.
@Balchad That is the single most disgusting, outright offensive comment I have ever seen in this post, or any post concerning this topic. And this is a perfect example of why the human race is doomed.
Have you no empathy? Do you know what it’s like to suffer on your death bed as thousands of people are about to enjoy a video game, and you lay there knowing you’re gonna die before you get the chance???
That is NOT being a victim, and that is NOT using death as a means to get a game early! You’re dumbing down his suffering to “cAn I pLaY sUpEr SmAsH bRoS uLtImAtE bEcAuSe I sTuBbEd My ToE!!1!11!111!!!1”
@Balchad Who's ignoring all the other dying kids? Everybody, a donation to Make-a-Wish can help lots of kids get their dying wish...
https://www.make-a-wish.org.uk/donate/one-off-donation
@Balchad
Well, I like consistency in people, no matter how much I can be at odds with them, so I respect that.
Thing is, as has been said here before, there's a key difference between being realistic and utterly insensitive: the first makes you state the fact, the second is just being unpleasant.
I get it, there are other dying people who want things and can't get them, but... again: as mentioned right above my comment - that's kind of why Make A Wish even exists.
If you can't relate to issues concerning terminally ill people, I hope you never will, because I'm not mean enough to wish for you to be in shoes that - trust me - will prove too tight for your own liking.
You make it sound as if I never been in their shoes. Well, you're kinda wrong there. It's just that I can handle my emotions better.
@Balchad Even if you have been in a dying kids shoes, it doesn't give you the right to decide what another dying kid should do in that situation...
Too many people who decide for this guy what his last wish should be. Pathetic.
Although I understand that this might be hard for Nintendo to pull off, I hope this guy gets his wish granted.
I wish only the best
Nice to see all the wholesome and considerate comments about this poor guy.........
Seriously, what's wrong with you people?
The outpouring of ‘why should they’ within these comments is surprising and a bit grim. what’s wrong with giving a dying man his last wish of playing the new Smash? Organisations like the Make a Wish foundation fulfil similar wishes. Lucasfilm showed an early cut of Star Wars to someone who was terminally ill.
Pre-release demos of the game exist and are used at events like E3 and EGS; this guy’s wish wouldn’t exactly be difficult to fulfill
@TossedLlama
Ouch, I didn't know! Sucks. Sorry for before!
@Balchad
Sorry for assuming what I couldn't.
But as a side effect, that put you on the receiving end of your own treatment.
@Balchad who are you to say what someone should and shouldn’t tweet about? It’s other people who have decided to mount a campaign. When you’re diagnosed terminally ill - a definition being that you have <6 months to live, come back to us and comment further. Because then you might - might - be in a position to wax lyrical about such matters.
@TossedLlama
You love too much for your own good.
@MsJubilee pathetic comment. Unreasonable and in very bad taste. A troll jumping on a bandwagon. Give it up for your own sake
@1UP_MARIO,
Yes because all he will do is play Smash and completely ignore his family.
@1UP_MARIO How insensitive of you to say. What if he wants to play SSB Ultimate with them? Did you ever think of that?
God, people like you disgust me. I don't care if you're trying to mean well, but... Damn, you're just- You disgust me. Let the man get a chance to play SSB Ultimate before he leaves this mortal plane. Take your cynical garbage to an elitist forum where you truly belong. Sheezus... :I
As for the fam of that man: Take it easy somewhat on him when playin' Smash. Not to the point of pacifism, just enough to where he still feels like he legitimately earned those wins. Cheer him on when/if he chooses to play the single-player modes! I'm sure he'd enjoy that.
EDIT: For you cynical, spineless cowards disguising your cynical attitudes as "trying to be realistic and help": How about you go take your cynical, spineless behaviour to places like GameFAQs and IGN and Gamespot, you damn cowards? Idiots, the lot of you. SHAMEFUL.
@ottospooky Wow, talk about being extremely hypocritical. You're doing the exact same thing you mongrel.
@JHDK stubbing your pinky toe is totally the same thing as dying from cancer...
Man, if he doesn't get to play, that would bring a tear to my eye
@gcunit he's not asking them to finish the game faster, he's asking for a demo or an early build. he's not forcing anyone to do anything, this giant campaign started with a tweet simply stating he was scared he wouldnt be able to play smash ultimate, not that he wanted them to send him an early copy. Multiple content creators OF THEIR OWN VOLITION retweeted it to Nintendo to try and help a friend. What he's asking for is someone at Nintendo to take 15 minutes out of their day to send him switch with a demo.
@gcunit I'm disgusted to see this behavior from a Nintendo Life moderator. Shameful.
@May_Nyan What behaviour? Posting a few comments that you disagree with?
@gcunit Thank You.
@gcunit Complete lack of respect for terminal cancer patients and basically taking the piss out of them and their wants.
Glad to see a comment section full of understanding, kind, and compassionate people! Wait.....
This guy only has a few months left to live, which is the terms of a normal 70-100 year life span, is a fraction of what you guys will get. Can the poor man get just a little respect?
He is not faking, he is not begging, this all started from his friends. Unlike you people, his friends care and want him to be happy.
That’s what matters when your literal body is trying to kill you from the inside, being happy. I bet it’s not hard to stay sane when your life is ticking away. Get a grip you inconsiderate excuses for Nintendo fans. Let this man be happy my God.
@May_Nyan "@gcunit I'm disgusted to see this behavior from a Nintendo Life moderator. Shameful."
Yes, you're absolutely right. Do like I did and report this person. Nintendo Life cannot just let a behavior like this slide. It is truly shameful a person like this is a moderator. I just hope this will change after this pathetic episode.
@May_Nyan That's not what I was doing fwiw. I don't care whether the person in question gets to play Smash Ultimate or not, none of my business, and I haven't said anything about that person. Show me where I did.
I mean, good luck to him if that's what he wants, but it just doesn't move me enough to feel inclined to retweet it or actively support it. I'm not a fan of the current trend of social media, where clicks are so cheap and meaningless, being used to put pressure on anyone for anything.
My initial comment was just a reaction to yet another Internet campaign - they are everywhere and I'm just tired of them I guess. Tired of people trying to use death and illness as a means to manipulate emotional responses from people, particularly when those responses are so superficial.
After that, I was just making light of the responses that were being made in this comments section, condemning people for not being as sensitive as others. Again, nothing to do with that person that was the subject of the article.
Can't really see why that's disgusting or shameful.
To me, no one is special, and having an illness doesn't make anyone special, adult or child. So I don't have any greater or lesser amount of respect for someone based on whether they have cancer or not. None of us should have an expectation for an 80 year life - that stuff is just statistical.
And fwiw, 3 of my grand parents died with cancer. I've sat alone with my grandmother, holding her hand, as she lay dying ie. in her final hour, moaning in pain, unable to speak. My mother's had cancer. I'll probably get cancer. Many of us in this comments section will probably die of cancer.
Cancer is pretty normal and it doesn't have the emotional weight others attach to it to me. Is that strength? Weakness? Maturity? Naivety? Who's to say? But is it pathetic, disgusting or something I should be ashamed of? Good luck.
@zet you can't just not get cancer. It's not like the flu, where you can get vaccines for it. Cancer doesn't work like that
@Lucasjk i know. It was sarcasm. Cancer is running strong in my family and I know what it is, sadly
@gcunit "To me, no one is special, and having an illness doesn't make anyone special, adult or child"
That's where we differ, to me, everyone is special.
@Skunkfish What's special about us?
@gcunit comment 208. Well said although I retweeted because if I didn’t people in the internets will voodooo curse me
@Nico07 : I touched on faith only very subtlely in my comment about eschatology, so I share your view in that respect. I drew a contrast between the faithful (who would not dispair about missing out on a frivolous pleasure on this plane of existence) as opposed to those who may not have faith and therefore perceive death as the be all and end all of their existence, and therefore wish to experience as many pleasures that the world has to offer before they die.
I understand where they are coming from, but I do not share their attachment to this finite world and that was what I was trying to point out without making any sweeping judgements as to where anybody stands on eschatology (though some around here seem all too keen to make assumptions about our intentions/morals/personalities etc.).
@AlexSora89 : When you made mention of my "half-joking" reference to the afterlife, I was wondering what on Earth you were talking about as my comment on eschatology had immediately sprung to mind (and there was no facetitious intent in that), but then I remembered my initial post which was a brief comment coupled with a joke remark which had then exploded into whatever this all is.
I don't think they just give a full copy of unreleased games to people because they are dying, but I dont see why they cant bring the game to him that tailgate trailer they've been showing
@AlexSora89 Fair enough dude. This is the first time I've heard his story. On today's internet, full of attention seekers and amoral people who'll do anything to go viral, it makes us all more weary of any story.
For want of better words, I wish the kid the best of days.
@Silly_G
What this is, is basically humanity in any normal day. With people trying to help and people trying to shoehorn cynicism into what doesn't really need it. That's all.
@Incarta
No apologies needed at all, suspicion is something to be had without concrete proof, especially given the secrecy concerning any new entry in the Super Smash Bros. series.
That said however, no chances can be taken when we're talking about something as serious as cancer.
Atleast give him the demo they had at E3 so he can try out some of the characters and have a nice time before he passes away. Make it happen Nintendo!
Um.....
Okay, guys. Let calm for a moment.
I had read so many comments here, and to respond about what supposed to do about that case, for me if i am a Nintendo CEO, i must be smart & carefully respond his Tweet. I think i will do like these :
First, i will make sure that he is in that real condition by asking him, his parents and the doctor who take care about him, just to clarify his sickness is real or not.
Second, if his sickness is real, to accept his favour about playing Smash Bros Ultimate earlier before he pass away, as a Nintendo CEO, i cannot give the full game directly to him when the game is supposed to be released on December 2018. It will violate the Business code ethic because the full game is still being worked. But if i cannot do his favour, it will create a bad rep in front of million peoples who respond / critize my decision to not do his favour. This is very difficult decision. And as Nintendo CEO, the solution to do his favour without spoiling the game too much in social media by giving him a demo copy that he can play like on E3 2018. At least the Demo E3 2018 version will not spoil the whole game too much since the characters that he can play is not 100% complete.
Third, after do his favour to give him a chance to play Smash Bros Ultimate Demo version, as a Nintendo CEO, i must set my awareness with other Tweets that suddenly post some begging to play Still-Not-Finished-Yet games to fulfill their favours before pass away, because i don't want peoples over there try to manipulate my symphaty toward them as a chance to get the games earlier before the time by pretending. I want to share my symphaty and show my kindness, but at the same time, i must know what is their motivation to ask to play a game earlier so peoples will not misusing that occasion to get an access for playing a full game before the time. It will ruin the business at the same time.
Well, that was my thinking to respond his favour.
@ValhallaOutcast they brought an unreleased game to Conan which was super smash Bros for wiiu. If they don't bring it to this dying kid it would make them look pretty bad.
@gcunit if you don't have a care in the world then why do you continue to argue? There was no need for your negativity on this post, it only makes you look like a horrible person.
@evilnatt Negativity in which post?
@MagicEmperor Shame we can't put mods on ignore
Some of you disappoint me on a profound level. Seriously! 😰
This is horrible. You guys crucify people for complaining about online service and on the same site you attack a person dying of cancer because you disagree with their decisions.
That's not even sad, that's sick.
I'm happy to see that most of us think are considerate people though.
@NintoRich For real. Yikes. Oh, well. I still love King Dedede!
@gcunit nothing but disgraceful sarcasm in almost all of them. It truly shocks me that your even a moderator on this website. Do you have any kind of understanding on what you're even saying? As I said before. They gived Conan a early copy of the last game. Remember that? So why in god's name do you believe that a bedridden kid who was given just months to live, not have the chance to play this game? You are nothing but a wonderful example of what's wrong with society today.
@gcunit if a developer doesn't pretty much have a game finished a few months before release then how good of a dev are they?
December is literally three months away.
@evilnatt You're mistaken.
And profanity is not allowed.
@gcunit how am I mistaking?
Also I'm just going to say it, most of you who are being low about this are just pissed off fan boys who don't want a dying person to play your beloved game before you get to.
@evilnatt Quote me where I show my belief he shouldn't get a chance at the game. Read my post at #208 if you need clarification.
@gcunit yet mocking the death of a child is?
gcunit 2:51am
"If I was a developer, I'd be pretty hacked off if I was trying to finish off a game and then an Internet campaign started pressuring me to finish it even earlier just so that one particular person might be able to play it before they die."
@evilnatt Quote me where I've mocked the death of a kid. That is not mocking the death of anyone. I was talking about the internet campaign.
BTW - he's 21 years old apparently.
gcunit3:40am
"Life is a terminal illness. We should all petition Sakurai to let us play the game now in case we're not alive come December. And let's ask them to pay our medical bills too while we're at it, we're dying here."
@gcunit I read 208. All I see is you using other people having cancer to defend your mistreatment of someone which just makes me wonder all the more about you.
@gcunit
Could you imagine the emotions he went through after seeing that?
@evilnatt
Um....
Pardon to bothering you but i think @gcunit just only expressed his awareness about some peoples that MIGHT Be pretending to be sick just want to get symphaties from other peoples.
Okay, we already know that kid is really sick and will pass away soon, but at the same time, if we find a case like that again, i think we must set an awareness first.
Before we show our emphaty & symphaty toward those peoples, we have to make sure that those peoples are really need helps. If we know those peoples are really sick, we can show our symphaty toward them. But, if we know those peoples are faking his condition in order to get what they want earlier, okay, i think we can put a curse on them for being FAKE.
@evilnatt Again, that's not mocking the kid. That's mocking the reaction of the commenters in this article.
What my comments are are none of his business. It's not like I made them on his twitter thread, and wasn't referring to him anyway.
@saintayu I haven't mistreated anyone. Where are you getting that from?
@gcunit so just because your on this website you feel safe? The reaction from this article are coming from what they've seen on Chris's twitter. So don't go around lying to yourself, you are infact referring to him and you know it.
@Anti-Matter you think he is still doubting this kid? Does that make him any better of a human being?
@Anti-Matter he clearly says that even if he has cancer it doesn't matter then goes on to say that because he has been personally effect by cancer he can dismiss other people who are suffering from it in first person. It's literally asking us to treat his opinion special because he has cancer in his family and then saying the person who actually HAS cancer is wrong.
@gcunit you know what you're doing.
@evilnatt No, I'm referring to the campaign. He didn't organise the campaign remember.
I just find a campaign like this distasteful. Sure, a friend could contact Nintendo and explain the plight of this person etc., no problem, but to make it public puts Nintendo under a pressure to do something that I find distasteful.
might be a better idea to just remove this article @Damo
@gcunit as if people don't put nintendo under pressure to get king k rool or ridley in smash.
@gcunit it doesn't put Nintendo under any pressure at all.
To adapt a quote to this, Nintendo could stand in the middle of Times Square and shoot someone and they wouldn't lose supporters.
@evilnatt That's a slightly less emotive form of pressure, wouldn't you say?
@gcunit and this a great chance for a company that is suffering from bad optics to get some great press coverage isn't it?
It goes both ways. Nintendo wouldn't just do this out of the kindness of their hearts they would because it's a massive PR opportunity.
These comments are always a joy to read.
On topic I really hope Chris Taylor gets to play Smash, best wishes to him.
@gcunit

The game came out when?
September 13th 2014. That's a near 4 months apart. How far away is December? near 4 months.
Poor guy feels like crap about all this btw. He’s read a lot of the comments on here. He’s been posting on Twitter after seeing the comments. He didn’t start the campaign, his friends did to try to give him one last thing to look forward to. People should be ashamed, he literally did nothing wrong and the campaign isn’t unreasonable considering what some charities do for the terminally ill. If you have nothing nice to say, why say anything at all? This doesn’t affect anyone here negatively, it’s completely up to the studio (who, if they do it, will realize it’s GOOD PUBLICITY and doesn’t actually cost them much, this close to release they have many builds they are just tweaking with the final balancing, and if they can’t they will take a demo they already have built). If you don’t support this, just don’t say anything at all, no one is making you... but there’s also no reason to make him feel like a selfish jerk for this nice thing his friends and parts of the Smash community are trying to do for someone who might not be here when the definitive version of his favorite franchise is out. I sincerely hope everyone here has people that love them enough that they’d try to make sure their last wish gets fulfilled.
I have mixed feelings about the guy's cancer being paraded around so callously so I don't think I'll comment further on this, nor give an opinion.
@ShadJV exactly. This hurts no one.
Cancer sucks, hopefully we find an effective treatment soon. Oh wait, with the FDA and other regulations, that won't happen any time soon. Top it off with billions of dollars in the cost of developing new drugs, and we progress very slowly towards a cure. Thanks a lot human rights activists... Drug development pre-regulation was exponential, and now it pretty much slowed down to a halt.
I'm actually quite shocked by some of the comments on this story, and even more shocked that the person who this story is about has seen them. I can't think how they must feel right now, and I'm utterly appalled that a story that was supposed to spread a positive message has degenerated into so much negatively.
