The Switch is already home to a number of iconic fighting game series, so what are chances of Bandai Namco's Soul Calibur series making the transition? In a translated interview with DualShockers at this year's Gamescom, SoulCalibur VI producer Motohiro Okubo said the game was currently not in development for Switch, but didn't entirely rule out the chances of the long-running fighting series coming to the system in the future:
At the moment there is no development for Switch at all. I understand that the Switch is a very successful hardware, and of course if there is a possibility, then it would be great to do it.
At the moment we’re focusing on the October 19th launch, so we don’t even have the time to think about that possibility. After the launch we’ll think about the possibility.
Nintendo's Switch already has a great collection of fighting games, with SNK Heroines: Tag Team Frenzy and Dragon Ball FighterZ due out next month, and Nintendo's very own Super Smash Bros. Ultimate available later this year. It shows there's always room for more fighting games in the future.
Would you like to see more fighting games make the Switch? Is the Switch fast becoming your fighting platform of choice? Have you played the Soul Calibur series in the past? Tell us below.

Put Link in it again and watch it become the best selling version.
Must be that time of year, a string of articles about all the games Switch might get, or won't get, or will get but later. 😛
[possibility intensifies]
This translates to, "it's not coming to Nintendo Switch but we don't want to anger anyone".
Quite honesty, the game doesn't look like it's very demanding so it's possible. But, in any case, it won't be high on my wantlist.
@thesilverbrick Switch should outsell the GameCube any day now, will be nice to not have to read any Wii U comparison articles anymore but wonder about all the possible Gamecube ports instead. It's too bad 3DS is getting Luigis Mansion but I'd be happy with a motion enabled port of the arcade version. ☺Also too bad no Starfox Adventures HD. 😯
That's fair dos. Nice to have such a transparent statement for once and nice to know it's not off the table.
@dkxcalibur I'd give it 18 months after launch for the Switch announcement, and 24 months for the actual Switch version launch.
@thesilverbrick true Gamecube version of SC 2 sold 1,5 million on Gamecube, 2 million on PS2, and just 1 million on original Xbox. Switch could outsell PS4 version in Japan
Well, bring it I say. Any game that can run on Switch is welcome.
Can't really blame them for not having considered it a target platform from the beginning, all things considered. ^^
I'd love to give SoulCalibur a whirl again. I'm in the wagon of Nintendo players who only ever spent time with SoulCalibur II, so by now, there are a lot of new characters to meet. Plus, it looks like they're going a little more sensible on the outfits again.
Link Majoras Mask for SC6 please.
Only way of playing geralt on the go XD
I'd love that and the latest King of Fighters.
MK and Injustice 2 would also be nice but I'm not counting on WB games support as it seems that they are only capable of releasing Lego games on the Switch.
@dkxcalibur
Bamco already has ten games on Switch. I don't think they'd make light of its potential. They put out DragonBall Xenoverse 2 on Switch, while Fighters Z was on track for the others, and when it sold well, Switch got Z as well.
SCVI was in production long before people knew what the Switch was fully capable of, and sticking to the plan isn't a bad move. Not trying to compete with Smash Bros. for the holiday season with a big budget fighter is also not a bad move.
It’s possible. I don’t care about how good the graphics are.
@Pod Great point. I'm just reacting negatively because I've heard this before from other developers.
@rjejr
"Must be that time of year..."
For the Switch, isn't it that time every single day of every single year? Feels like it! 😉
Just port that remake of SC2.
@dkxcalibur
Well, a lot of those developers are making due these months. Even some of the ones who said they WOULDN'T consider their games for Switch cough Gears for Breakfast cough.
Someone get Panic Button on the phone!
@rjejr The Wii U had no less then what 10 of those.......oh wait, those were this game is not coming to the Wii U. Never mind.
I feel like this is the standard pr answer to "It's actually coming, but we got caught with our pants down so we just started porting"
like almost every time a game developers say they are "considering X game" actually got themselves a switch port
I'm not a fighting game player really but SC2 was a great experience on Gamecube. I'd be interested...
We need a new meme on the forum: WWPBD? (What would Panic Button do?) Any game mentioned has 10 posts minimum naming Panic Button.
I preordered on X1 since my best fight stick is my X1 stick now, but Switch still sits #2 for fighters for me.
@Pod "by now, there are a lot of new characters to meet. P"
And each of them will cost $5.99. Ahh, fighting games in 2018.....
My soul is ready
@pod I'd buy this instead of SBU 8}
The more likely scenario is that Bandai Namco doesn't port Soul Caliber 6 to the Switch when the game bombs on the other consoles and puts the entire series on hiatus.
That October 19th release date is already killing Battlefield V. I can't imagine Soul Caliber fairing any better.
Everything is possible. It's just the question if you (the developer) are willing to do the effort.
Make an exclusive version for switch with the Max graphics it can handle, out in Link, Ike, Shulk and you have a massive sale on day one lol.
Fair enough point. There is no guarantee soul calibur VI would be possible on switch. Not at the required level that the development team want it anyway.
Lets consider that Tekken 7 runs @ 720p on Xbox one and 900p on PS4. The Switch version of that for example would need to be downgraded. 600p docked, 480p undocked. The idea that anything is possible on switch is laughable.
@sanderev that's simply not true.
@rjejr nobody wants Starfox adventure's HD. Game was trash
@NightBeast do you think Tekken 7 looks demanding?
@The-Chosen-one I don't think they've ever repeated guest fighters, but Shulk would be amazing.
@dkxcalibur I dunno. Even if it was coming to Switch it's still the answer to give.
After all, the game hasn't yet come even to the console it IS confirmed for already so calling for news about a still hypothetical Switch port.... is a bit early.
Personally there's still uncertainty but that comment means they are aknowledging demand for it.
Maybe it won't be possible.... but at the same time? Well... a Switch port coming out -later- can be a perfect excuse to stretch out the game's lifespan a bit further after they'll have already had time to see
A: how well the game did in the first place
B: further continue to evaluate that demand to see if a Switch port would be worth it(I think it would since a LOT of people recall fondly the GC version of Soul Calibur 2 and the console is already building up a bit of a fighting game crowd with everything it's already getting)
and finally
C: how much of a job might it be to optimize the game for Switch(by many porting development team's account, porting to Switch is apparently much easier than expected. To the point the challenge is neither graphics nor processing power in most case but simply storage and the size of assets themselves; see Skyrim bundling non-english localizations as free DLCs or other games requiring a microSD card to save extra data on).
Edit: Short version is it may be a challenge(ish) but still basically doable and it all depends on how continued the demand is for a Switch version and how well the other versions will sell in the first place(poor sales on PS4/XBone might actually nix any chance of even getting a Switch version because it might simply be interpreted as there being no demand anymore for Soul Calibur at all in the first place).
Either ways it's basically too early to say whether a Switch port will be coming or not because we don't even know how the PS4/XBone versions will sell at all anyway since those aren't even released yet. Nonetheless the comment aknowledge there is demand/interest in a Switch port before even those original "primary" consoles versions are even out, which probably shouldn't be underestimated for the future 6 months-1 year and a half from now if the game does decently enough to stretch it's lifespan further with the development of a Switch port.
@kobashi100 How is it not true? Sure the Switch has limits, but so do the XBOX ONE and PS4. You can always reduce graphics, resolution and/or framerate in order to get the game running.
Anything is possible. That's an absolute fact.
They don't have to port Soul Caliber VI to Switch. All they have to do is take Soul Caliber II GC, remake it, and include Soul Caliber I HD as a bonus. It would easily outsell VI.
@BanjoPickles I was just about to comment something similar when I saw yours. I was going to say just add a lick of HD paint to the Dreamcast original,add online multiplayer and we're good to go. The graphics in that game blew me away like nothing else really has since. It was the game that really put a home console on level pegging with the best of the arcades for the first time. It still holds up well today.
@thesilverbrick
Ha, yeah, though Link appearing in a non-Zelda game has been done to death so much in recent years that it might not have the same impact anymore.
@OorWullie
Exactly! For my money, it doesn’t get any better than the first two games in the series. The fact that it still so well regarded tells me that it would be a guaranteed seller, if handled properly. Make it a Switch exclusive.
Ok so I guess that means I won’t be getting this at launch anymore.
(Although I would prefer SCII HD at this point. They skipped the nintendo version last go round and it still has my favorite roster (except Setsuka and Hilde)) I would pay full price for that game on the go. But to be honest....If they just ported IV I wouldn't even need VI. (I'll take VI of course)
@kobashi100 Starfox Adventures was the best looking game I'd ever played for about 5 years. Tons of fun too. I do feel bad for anybody who bought it thinking it was a SF game, b/c it wasn't, but for anybody going in looking for "Dinosaur Planet" they most likely enjoyed it. They should have just left Krystal as the star, no Fox. Probably wouldn't have sold as well, but wouldn't have received such hate either.
@Spoony_Tech @Ooyah But the Switch is the anti-Wii U, the console that gets all the games the Wii U didn't. It's not supposed to be the console that only gets Wii U and other last gen games in handheld mode.
@rjejr
Oh how I laugh when I remember that there were people who compared the Wii U and Switch in terms of third party support. Some even claimed Wii U was doing better. Oh how we laugh in hindsight....
Anything is possible Namco, if Dragon Ball FighterZ was possible so could Soul Calibur II (yeah I'm not liking VI).
Won't bother picking it up elsewhere, but if it comes to Switch, ya I'd pick it up.
In this post-Switch world we live in, it has to be a rare, generational masterpiece to get me to buy a game on a TV-only console. Which means "good" and even "great" simply don't make the cut. If they want my money, they know where I'll be.
i lost interest in soul caliber because of 5 and the best one I have played was 3.
@BanjoPickles
that would work for me too.
I'm sure there is stuff going on under the hood that I don't understand, but trailers for VI don't make it look much better than IV or V. Decrease the resolution, scale back some lighting and normal mapping effects, and make some of the 3D stuff in the distance into a skybox. I'd still buy it.
Given the fact that one on one Fighters aren't too technically demanding and the pretty good support the Vita got with them, I'd be surprised if the Switch didn't end up with most games that don't have exclusivity deals (man I'd love Street Fighter V Arcade Edition and King of Fighters XIV but both seem unlikely).
@thesilverbrick That would be awesome. I would love to maybe see some of the cast in Hyrule Warriors in this too.
https://youtu.be/p-0o1TUPLpE
This should give you an idea why Tekken 7 and soul calibur VI would take some work to run on switch.
The Xbox one version took some major cutbacks to maintain 60fps.
@rjejr — There are quite a few GameCube games I'd love to see remade, remastered, HD versions of.......unfortunately most of them would never happen.......especially MVP 04.......still the best realistic baseball game to me.
Time Splitters 2 is seeming like a possability now thought so who knows.......I'd buy that one right away.
If Fire Emblem Three Houses does well enough we may see Path of Radiance get a remake like Echos for 3DS.
Oh yeah, my favourite fighting series next to Smash Bros. and Killer Instinct. I unfortunately played only SoulBlade/SoulEdge on a friends Playstation, Soul Calibur on a friends Dreamcast, and Soul Calibur II on my own Gamecube, but I loved them all.
@electrolite77 I'm not sure what we're supposed to be laughing at, I find it all sad really.
Wii U did have some decent 3rd party support at launch when Nintnedo was mistakenly trying to compete w/ the other 2 - PS4 and X1 that it's still competing with now just with a portable that can play those games rather than an ill-fated home console - and I think the botched way those games were handheld, and EA's infamous" unprecedented support", just makes a mockery of that initial 3rd party support.
But the games were there:
Batman added the cool Gamepad usage, probably more than Ntinedo ever did, but the game was way late
ME3, but for the price of ME1, 2 and 3 together
ZombiU was a nice exclusive that did way more w/ the Gamepad than anything worthwhile Ntinedo ever did
Here's a list (not sure how accurate it is) of 1st year 3rd party Wii U vs. Switch games, I'll personally take the Wii U list. Switch had a better first party year though.
https://www.reddit.com/r/nintendo/comments/85fcod/the_wii_u_had_46_aaa_third_party_titles_in_its/
My problem now, as discussed w/ my kids this morning, is personally Switch had a great 1st party 1st year - Zelda, Mario, Splatoon 2, Mario and Rabbids, MK8D and to a lessor extent ARMS, and Kirby may just make it, maybe month 13. Year 2 for Switch has games, and some heavy hitters thsi holiday - Pokemon, Mario Party and SSBU - but not stuff I'm all that interested in, I'd rather have Yoshi and Pikmin 4. That's my problem, but I like what I like.
Also sad no RDR2 or Madden. Or the new AC game. And whichever numbered CoD and BF games are out this year.
So I'm not laughing at much. Two "Nindie Directs" in two weeks really isn't my thing either. DQXI next Tuesday though.
I can only repeat myself on this.
@NEStalgia "I preordered on X1 since my best fight stick is my X1 stick now"
Ha, at the rate you're going, with demolishing all your controllers, you're not going to have a decent stick left for the Xbox One, by the time this game releases...
1. Always more fighters. Silly question. We are missing so many great franchises.
2. I would love this to hit Switch. Bring back Link tho!
@ThanosReXXX Nonsense! (I bought the 4 year warranty on the current Elite.... )
I also discovered the Brook device that could let me use it on Switch and PS4 too....but it's battery life is as awful as a DualShock4.....
@NEStalgia Better check the fine print on that 4 year warranty for any mentions of "warranty null and void in case of over-excessive stress put on controller casing and/or controller parts, due to panicky vice grip of user"...
@rjejr
I find it pretty amusing when people try and compare the two. There has to be some real twisting and straining to get the Wii U list to stand up e.g. that Reddit list and it’s very liberal definition of AAA. Switch has more games, more good games and most importantly support is increasing whereas by May 2014 (the equivalent point in the Wii Us life) support for Wii U was all over bar Lego and Just Dance.
I agree on this years first party output. Objectively strong overall but weirdly, I haven’t cared. I’ve bought so many games. The runin to the end of the year is, for a Nintendo system, amazing even with so many Western games not making it. RDR2 would have been nice for some people but Switch isn’t designed for the big Western AAA stuff and Nintendo aren’t particularly chasing it. Chuck in the technical demands and it was always a pipe dream.
There are big gaps, it needs more Sport and Racing games but overall, it’s a night and day comparison for me.
What I will say is that after hearing these quotes I am not buying the PS4 version. I am now gonna wait and see if we get a switch release.
I really hope we get this. I would prefer it to Super Smash Bros.
Just give us a visually updated Soul Cal 2 and I think most people would be happy. Heck, Soul Cal 2 is one of the few fighting games I still see people mention years later and on of the very few I really enjoyed as a kid.
@electrolite77 From a Switch only owner's perspective, I can understand this year seems weaker and maybe underwhelming to some. But still leagues better than the Wii U imo.
That console was like a desert as you desperately await the next time Nintendo hands you a bottle with a third of water in it.
That's cool. With Smash, Mega Man, Valkyria Chronicles, and a buttload of JRPGs on the way, I'm still quite spoilt with options for the rest of the year.
Translation, "We hate money".
its on Unreal 4 doesnt that already make it "possible" to be able to run
My first Soulcalibur game was II on the GameCube. Since then, I acquired the first Soulcalibur (not Soul Edge/Soul Blade) for iOS, as well as IV and V for the Xbox 360. I still have yet to get III, Legends, Broken Destiny, amongst others. I would love to see VI come to the Switch, though.
@electrolite77
The Wii U had good first party support during its launch day.
Week/months of poor sales and lackluster first party support later, everything collapsed.
"Focused on initial launch right now, will do the Switch 'Double-dip' edition later on" is what I hear >.>
@HollowGrapeJ
😀 Nice analogy
Top three fears of game developers:
3-Not meeting the deadline
2-Being let go immediately after the game releases
1-Getting asked everyday whether you'll port your game to Switch
