While we wait patiently for Square Enix to bring Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age to Nintendo Switch - a project that's clearly going to take quite some time to complete as the publisher determines the best approach - one little tweet suggests said port might feature some content not found in other versions.
According to a tweet from someone who supposedly attended Square Enix’s 38th annual meeting of stockholders, the firm plans to include extra content in the eventual Switch version that doesn't appear in the PS4 incarnation. Square Enix hasn't provided any official word on this information, so take it with a large handful of salt, especially considering every on-record statement its made about the Switch port has focused on how far off it is.
Does it matter to you that the Switch version may feature extra content? Does such a premise incline you to wait for the Switch version over PS4? Share your thoughts below...

Yup, the delay is due to them adding Mario hats.
Can we even see a screenshot of it first? Just so we know this version even exists
Switch's going to have the best gaming library after the SNES!
We'll get Mario block-shaped lootboxes!

@TheCurator
Hummm Hummmm... the best gaming library after the Virtual Boy if it continues like that ! :/
@TheCurator so far it doesn't have nearly the library as the Wii U, though.
I REALLY want this game on my switch not my ps4 but if it takes too long and goes on sale on ps4 I might not be able to resist..... Hurry it up!!!!!
This should stop this silly cancellation talk we hear
Nop... Ill be playing this September.
I hope extra contents doesn't mean just one extra dungeon.
@Agramonte As will most people. Let's be honest, this isn't coming out.
They made a mistake announcing this before knowing what the system was.
with how nintendo is planning releases i feel like this will be a late 2019 or early 2020 game, ugh the wait is unbearable
@knuckles-fajita , I feel like this game will come out, there is no reason why it shouldnt, as it runs on ue4
there is also the chance they might add the 3ds visual style as an option for the switch, so you can play in 3 different visual styles, which would be very cool to me
I’ll take the game itself please. I know it's coming but I wish Squeenix wouldn't keep trying to sell tupperware before it comes out.
@Knuckles-Fajita yeah man... Just pie in the Sky.
I waited for Hollow Knight and BattleChasers. But no way am I skipping playing a new Dragon Quest in 2018. I Can barely wait for September as is.
@Agramonte I wouldn't wait. There is no benefit to a late port if you have other options.
I'm seeing Splatoon sales now represent 2/3 of Japan's total GDP. A Switch port is inevitable with the success of the platform... just wish they would hurry up.
@TheCurator Yeah, and half of it can be played on other systems.
I'm gonna get the version that's coming out in September. not waiting years for a switch version to be released likely in 2020 or 2021.
Content that doesn't exist now for the PS4 version but will most likely be released in a Game of the Year edition for half the price of the Switch edition when it releases.
@OmegaDestroyer If anything it will be 10$ more and be almost the same thing lol.
@Knuckles-Fajita my PS4 doesn't allow me to play on the train.
For me sitting in front of a TV for 40+ hours is just never gonna happen.
The wait is long but I can handle it.
Why they don't port Dragon Quest IX on the meantime? Mobile only, 720p. Bet it will sell good on Switch.
38th annual...
That goes back six years before Squaresoft was even founded, so I guess the number has to be based on Enix' shareholder meetings.
Anyway, looking forward to this game. It's been a lon long time since I decided to dig in to a contemporary full size jRPG, but this is it. That's 'contemporary'. Not 'modern'.
This is the last non-exclusive game I'm getting for the PS4. I was going to hold out for the Switch version, but who knows when (or if) we're going to get it? I'm sure it will be released, but I have my doubts it will do so outside of Japan. The international release date for the PS4 version is in a terrible place, and it can easily be overshadowed by games releasing around the same time that many are excited for (Spider-Man, Red Dead Redemption 2, etc.), and I have my doubts that DQXI will sell well enough for Squeenix to continue support for it.
Personally, I would've preferred the 3DS version overall, but look how that turned out.
I just want the game in a timely manner, not years after the PS4 version has hit stores. I have always traditionally bought my DQ games on Nintendo systems and I don't want that to change but if it is too long of a wait it might have to.
I'm cool waiting for the Switch version. I'm already going to have more JRPGs to play this year than I can reasonably get to.
So... it's factually coming to the west? I can deal with the "when" part, I just need to know so I can know when to start caring...
I don't recall ever reading that it was guaranteed to release in the West.
I don't know how i feel about this. Maybe they announced this port way too early. It's sounds like a 2020 release at this point.
Y'know, there IS that finished 3DS version floating around....That would make the wait for the Switch version more bearable, SE.
@Knuckles-Fajita I don't think they made a mistake announcing it. Especially with 7 and 8 on 3DS, it seems planned. Have you seen how the game looks on PS4? Have you seen how the game runs on PS4?
DQX1 on Switch should not be a challenge, yet their code is so utterly horrendously broken that running it on a PS4 Pro is a challenge. From the graphics running it on a PS3 shouldn't be a challenge let alone a Switch. But it drops to like 15fps on a Pro at times.
It's the least we deserve for waiting so long
@Ralizah No kidding, I just started XC2! Pity me. (Actually it's beautiful in handheld. It may not look next gen but it renders in a way that reminds me of HD remasters of the PS1 FFs. And that's not a bad thing.
this is the game i look most for before metroid prime 4.
bring it on squareenix, show us your best.
it would be a mayor achievement.
@NEStalgia Let me know if you still think it looks beautiful in handheld mode by the time you hit Torigoth. Glad you got to it, though. It's a fantastic game.
@Ralizah Haha, at least I'll know what to expect So far it does indeed seem fantastic. Was debating between starting XC2 or Ys8 first, but knowing there's more XC2 on the way tipped my hand.
This is pretty much the only way SE can justify asking for full price for the Switch version while encouraging double dipping.
I would still pick up this game whether the extra content or not I think for myself it'll be ok
Feels like ages since I've played a Dragon Quest game, bring it on!
Even if it’s released on the same time, I will still play it on PS4. The graphics will certainly look better on my TV. I know portability is important but currently I only play small/indie games in portable mode as they are handled very well by the Switch. Play big games and it turns into a disaster like XC2
When it comes to a game whose silence around is worrying me, I can only think of the next Metroid. Maybe Mario and Luigi in the Olympics (that's mid-2020) will come out before both DQ and Metroid....
I would not remotely consider buying a PS4 version over Switch. Trading portability for a minor visual enhancement is bonkers to me. But I know some people value that difference a lot more than I do.
I played dozens of hours of Xenoblade 2 in portable and frankly don't understand why people like @H_Hunter always say it was so bad in portable. The only issue I ever had was a slight delay of the scenery loading in after fast travelling to an entirely new area. At most, a couple of seconds. So I have no concern for Dragon Quest or any other game properly made on the Switch.
Square Enix is Fickle as all get out, I wouldn't be surprised if the Switch Ver gets dropped along the Way. The Additional Content is probably just the DQ 1 code upon finishing. I'm not interested in waiting to see them cancel another promise, so I'm picking up a used PS4 for the release
Echoes of an Elusive Age? More like Echoes of an Elusive Game...
On the one hand, I really need the portability of Switch if I'm ever planning to actually finish this game.
On the other hand, if I wait then I feel like I'm letting down my favorite JRPG by not showing support in the first year of release and I don't want to live in a world where Squenix thinks the west doesn't want DQ games anymore... Again..
@Knuckles-Fajita Portability for one. I've never finished a Dragon Quest game that wasn't on a handheld. Unless they announce some kind of cross-save functionality with the PS4, I'll wait.
@LegendOfPokemon That's the point. The Wii U didn't get any 3rd party titles but the Switch gets mostly everything. That's the big difference. That's why I'm happy.
THIS GAME HAS STILL NOT COME OUT DESPITE BEING ONE OF THE FIRST SWITCH GAMES EVER ANNOUNCED!?
Nobody's going to care if the Switch version ever comes out, because most people would've already played the English version on PS4 and PC!
Ase long as it's nothing story/plot exclusive, I'm cool with it.
By the time it comes out on Nintendo, the Ps4 will have it on sale. Am a Nintendo fan, but my wallet is first priority.
I would like to play as BotW Link
