Star Wars has a long and proud history in the realm of video games (as well as a few bum notes), but one of the most memorable interactive adaptations has to be the excellent trilogy of titles on the SNES.
We'd dearly love to see some of the modern movies recreated in this 16-bit style on Switch, but that's not likely to happen - so we'll just have to make the most of John Stratman's superb animation.
Before we continue, it's worth noting that the video should be considered spoiler-packed if you haven't already seen the movie.
The scene in question takes place at the end of The Last Jedi, where Kylo Ren (Ben Solo) confronts his uncle and former teacher, Luke Skywalker. It's all rendered in a 16-bit style very close to that of Super Star Wars, Super Empire Strikes Back and Super Return of the Jedi, the three SNES outings released in the '90s.

I'd watch it.
I never liked the Super Star Wars games. Personally, I don't think we had any great Star Wars games until the N64.
I had to refrain myself from posting this on my social media sites yesterday because of spoilers. Ea, when will you realize there are a lot of us Star Wars fans with a Switch this Xmas without any Star Wars game to play on the system?
Did they ever make 16 bit movies for the snes? I think that would have been kind of cool. If you don’t know what I’m talking about, I mean something like this that would be on an SNES cartridge that you could put in and it would play a 16 bit movie. Although I’m sure it wouldn’t be able to be too long.
Still waiting for Spaceballs 2: The Search for More Money...
As someone who liked TFA and Rogue One, I hated The Last Jedi.
@Aerona
The movie reviews pretty well...I thought it was pretty good.
@johnvboy Yeah, major devide between the audience and critic scores on Rotten Tomatoes.
I rather enjoyed the movie myself, thought it was far better than TFA.
Dust off the shoulder.
Nice.
This movie was so much better than The Force Awakens IMO, which was basically just a nostalgia trip. This one was actually its own movie.
Bring back LucasArts!
Really though, now would be a good time to commission a studio like WayForward (for example) to produce a new run of 16-bit style Super Star Wars games based on the new trilogy...or a point 'n' click adventure called Mos Eisley: Hive of SCUMM and Villainy
It look nothing like any of those three games. Those three games doesn't have boring dialogue section.
This little clip was more entertaining than SWBF2 itself.
@Aerona I hear a lot of people hating on The Last Jedi but nobody has yet to me give any concrete reasons why it was so bad. Can I ask why you didn’t like it? I’m genuinely curious. I thought is was far better (WAY less predictable and derivative) than The Force Awakens.
@Aerona.
The critic reviews are all there,but the audience reviews will always lean to the more negative side,people that like something just get on with enjoying it,but people that did not like the movie will be far more vocal.
It's basic human nature and works the same with receiving good or bad service,if you are happy with something you may tell a couple of people,however if you are unhappy with a level of service or have a bad experience you will tell on average 10 people.
This video touches on one of my gaming wishes that is least likely to come true: To see the prequel and sequel trilogies made in the style of the SNES original trilogy! Can you guys imagine how epic Super Revenge of the Sith would be? So sad it's one of those "when banthas fly" scenarios. :/
"See you around, kid."
@ToneDeath I thought EA was the "hive of scum and villainy." :3
@subpopz,
This post shows why Lucas sold the Star Wars rights to Disney,the fans are hard work and in effect do not know what they want.
If Disney make a movie like "The force awakens" some complain it's to similar to "A new hope",and if they take a few risks like they did with "The last Jedi" some people do not like the changes.
Even the original movies had similarities.
@BensonUii,
It's all personal opinion at the end of the day,I just wish you enjoyed the movie as much as I did.
@subpopz I will agree there were parallels between TLJ and ESB and ROTJ, but TFA was a shot-for-shot remake of ANH. In terms of plot development and predictability, TLJ has far more twists and turns and wasn’t just two hours of nostalgia and blatant fan service.
I’ve seen it several times and I can’t seem to recall any massive plot holes, bad jokes, or any of what you’re describing. The only thing I’d have changed was the pointless leg of the story involving Finn and Rose, but otherwise it was a solid, entertaining movie.
And what did they discard that they set up in TFA? Please elaborate.
@thesilverbrick,
Certain fans feel there is an entitlement to a certain type of Star Wars movie they feel they deserve.
But none of them seem to be able to agree on what type of movie that should be or what it should contain.
@johnvboy I think you hit the nail on the head. There are definitely flaws in TLJ, but on the whole it was a compelling, entertaining film. And you’re definitely right, audience reviews always tend to skew negative. Contented people don’t tend to go online and spread their opinions as much as disgruntled people.
I wonder if Leia Poppins would have been a playable character?
@thesilverbrick,
I loved the movie and so did my sister,but we have not felt the need to go online an post a review,we just enjoyed it simple as that.
So I always take the professional reviewers more seriously as there is usually a better balance of good and bad,it's their job so their review being seen is important to them.
Of course as usual the haters always seem to say the critics are being paid off....but they can't have it both ways.
@Aerona I mostly enjoyed TLJ, but it did have some serious issues story wise and several eye roll moments like Leia Poppins.
Hopefully this game is better than the awful movie
@thesilverbrick I don't know if I have time to cover it all. The more I think about it the more problems I have with it. I think my biggest problem is what they did with Luke Skywalker. He was all about redeeming his father in the original trilogy, bringing him back to the light side of the force. He definitely wasn't the type to, "in a moment of weakness" contemplate killing his nephew... to the point where he had his lightsaber out. It's a complete 180. Some Star Wars fans have been waiting for thirty years to see Luke on the big screen again, so yeah. Even Mark Hamill had objections.
It also completely ignores everything set up by TFA. Like, the twist is that there is no twist. Who are Rey's parents, why is she so powerful? Nobody, and I don't know, she just is, because reasons. Curious about Snoke? Too bad, he's completely unexplained.
The whole plot doesn't really make sense either. This actually didn't occur to me, but if you're having to chase the resistance at sub light speed, why can't you send some Star Destroyers ahead at light speed to intercept them? And maybe Holdo didn't want to reveal her plan to everyone because she was worried about moles or something, but that's not established in the film and there's no reason not to trust Poe, flyboy or not.
I hate the casino planet sequence. And DJ. Rose's feelings for Finn came pretty much out of nowhere. I also can't take Kylo seriously as 'the Supreme Leader', and I think it was too early to kill Luke.
I'm convinced that Rian Johnson either doesn't understand or doesn't like Star Wars. I'm starting to think it was a mistake to get rid of George Lucas.
I could go on, but I won't. If you enjoyed the movie, then that's great! I really wanted to like it myself.
@subpopz,
But the movie is getting good reviews by professional respected movie critics,the poor critic reviews are in the minority.
@subpopz I certainly don’t intend to threaten anyone or cram my opinion down their throat. If you hated it, that’s your right. I was just genuinely curious why people don’t care for it, but most of the criticism I’m hearing is quite vague. And that’s fine. To each his own.
@Aerona
Most Star Wars fans seem to agree while enjoyable on a certain level the prequel movies are pretty poor,and the worst of the franchise.
I don't mind them but Lucas has given them some of the worst hammy dialogue ever committed to film.
So what are you saying about Lucas?
@Aerona I half expected the kid with the broom on the casino planet to break out into a rendition of “castle on a cloud” from Les Miserables.
The main issue is people tend to look far to deep into movies,I mean they are complaining that a space fantasy movie,set a long time ago with technology that would seem fantastic to our generation,is a little far fetched in places..
@thesilverbrick I've been thinking about this movie and I really did enjoy it while watching it. However, after it was over and thinking about it, there are so many things that don't make sense or are frustrating as a Star Wars fan.
So it's this weird thing where if you don't care about those rough spots the movie will be great, but if you do, you've got a lot to say in the negative.
Not to mention that whole kamikaze light speed deal may completely destroy the Star Wars universe, ho boy!
@johnvboy I'm saying that to get rid of George Lucas was to not understand the problem with Lucas. In the original trilogy he had creative partners who helped mold his ideas and he, with help, created wonderful movies. In the prequels his word was basically law and he was surrounded by yes men.
So I don't think it was right to remove Lucas from his own franchise, he just needed creative oversight.
@Aerona I’m sorry you didn’t like it, and I can certainly see where you’re coming from. And I definitely agree there are certain issues in the movie. The Finn/Rose plot was essentially useless. I hate how R2-D2 (who, according to Lucas, is the character from whose perspective the saga is told) had less than three minutes of screen time. Holdo could’ve easily reassured Poe she had a plan, averting quite a bit of trouble. I certainly am not claiming the movie is perfect, but it kept me on the edge of my seat, meshed quite well with the rest of the saga and expanded universe and ultimately entertained me.
And as far as Luke is concerned, remember who his father is. He didn’t exactly inherit perfect emotional stability and his experiences over thirty years could easily have changed his outlook and personality. It happens all the time in real life.
But I digress. I have no intention of arguing with you and I don’t think I can win you over into liking it. Thanks for being honest and actually clearly explaining your opinion. I appreciate it.
@subpopz,
You and the people who did not like the movie have no more of a "Valid" reason than people who liked the movie.
Your post effectively says I am glad for the people who liked the movie,but you are all wrong.
@thesilverbrick No problem! The thing is, people change, and betray their principles all the time. But they don't give us any real reason for it. So for a character as important as Luke, you'd have to show us how it happened, not tell us.
@Aerona,
The original movie was made as one off movie,it was only when it did so well at the box office they decided to make more.
So in effect they were making it us as they went along,when Empire was released it was not universally liked by fans or critics.
@Aerona I agree. I think the fact that they set these films so long after the events of ROTJ presents its own set of problems. There’s just a massive gap in time that is completely unaccounted for in which so much has changed. Here’s hoping the expanded universe can fill in some of those gaps and make the sequel trilogy more compelling.
@johnvboy Well, Empire definitely isn't my favorite Star Wars movie. shrugs
I’ve sat through many terrible movies (Chun Li, Ghost Rider, etc) but this movie actually put me to sleep.
Why does no-one seem to understand that it can be a good movie without necessarily being a good Star Wars movie?
That's the crux of the debate over TLJ. It's a great film in its own right, but it is potentially inconsistent with everything that's gone before it over 40 years. There are people out there, like me, who are so attached to the Star Wars of 77-83, have seen each film hundreds of times, and perhaps justifiably feel like TLJ is more about Disney/RJ turning the franchise into their property, rather than fully respecting the original works and attempting to continue them.
I was iffy about Force Awakens at first, but now I really like it, because it's consistent with what went before and feels like Star Wars.
TLJ... kinda doesn't feel the quite the same, like they don't GAF about the history.
Maybe. I'm very torn on it. Episode 9 might still fill in bits 8 supposedly overlooks, but my gut is worried.
@Aerona I don’t know if you edited your post earlier or I just missed it. If it’s the latter, I apologize. But I just noticed a couple points you made, and I think I might have at least a marginal attempt reassurance for you, haha.
As far as Rey’s parents are concerned, nobody ever said they had to be anything special. Force attuned people can come out of nowhere, and even Anakin himself came from nothing at all. I think what’s happening with her is she is the Force’s attempt at rebalancing everything and this makes her presence even more valuable, at least in my eyes, anyway.
And as for Snoke, sure, we don’t know who he is, but we knew zero about Palpatine even after his death in ROTJ, and we really didn’t get any clarification for over 20 years.
The issues most people seem to have aren’t at all without precedent, and they actually do mesh with everything we already know about the Star Wars universe, perhaps even too much.
Again, if you still don’t like the movie, that’s your prerogative and I certainly don’t intend to change your mind. I just thought looking at it from another perspective might be helpful.
I absolutely loved the movie (for me it's on par with 'The Empire Strikes Back', which is in my Top-10 best movies ever) and this 16 bit video game rendition is just great!
Thanks folks @Nintendo Life for showing me this link, be assured that you made up may day for sure (I was feeling a tad down this evening, but no longer do now. )
@thesilverbrick I mostly hate it because of that stupid ship chase! Really the first order didn’t have any other ships to warp in front of the rebels? Why didn’t they launch fighters? They should be faster than the rebel ships. But other than that I would agree the movie was entertaining and I don’t hate people who like it, I’m just not a big fan of it.
The Last Jedi was one of the worst films of 2017. The only movie worse was The Dark Tower, but not by much.....
When someone asks me why I hate this film, all I have to do is point them to the Luke Skywalker reduced to drinking green milk from a 4 breasted alien creature scene. >:[
@SimplyCinnamon53 They addressed a lot of that in the movie. The small fighters didn’t have the firepower necessary to destroy the Resistance fleet, plus Hux knew they could simply bide their time and simply destroy the fleet in a matter of hours instead of wasting resources picking at them unproductively with small fighters. And as far as additional ships to warp out in front of the Resistance, don’t forget that the First Order just suffered a massive loss at Starkiller Base and doesn’t have unlimited resources. The fact that Snoke’s command ship was part of the chase seems to indicate they were using all their remaining resources to attack the Resistance.
A great movie and a great recreation. The Last Jedi is easily my second favourite Star Wars movie, after The Empire Strikes Back of course.
@subpopz,
You are missing my point too.
Our reasons have no validity at all,we personally have our own reasons for liking or disliking this movie.
And to be honest neither of us has any need to defend or justify our love or hate for this movie.
It's all just opinions at the end of the day.
Luke Skywalkers sacrifice to do what he had to do was a bit of a melancholy surprise... But, if we remember the Jedi lore beforehand and the fact in the movie that Yoda reminds Luke he has to teach what he has learned in his experience and pass it on and not by some ancient text... Well, lets just say that what a lot of people are not pointing out is the possibility in the next movie where Rey has a GHOST of a chance in her next battles, if you catch my drift.
Top 3 Star Wars movie behind Empire and New Hope.
I really wish the Switch could get some good Star Wars games.
@thesilverbrick For me it was just a slow introduction to Episode IX more than anything else. They spent the whole movie just setting the stage for what's coming next.
I found the acting specially bad this time around and Luke's role to be really disappointing.
The action and adventure (where there actually any kind of "adventure" in this movie?) scenes were really bad in my opinion. I've always felt excited when watching a Star Wars film, even with Episode I (which I consider to be the worst) I got my short rush of adrenaline. The Last Jedi was a slouch from start to finish.
I had big hopes for this movie because I really loved The Force Awakens (even with all the similarities with A New Hope) but, for me, The Last Jedi was definitely one of the worst Star War movies ever made.
Really, the only scene I thought was outright bad was Leia Poppins. That was just ridiculously goofy and didn’t make sense. Otherwise I thought it was great. I loved the alien casino and the people I saw it with (who grew up with the trilogy) wanted to see more of it.
The only thing Star Wars the Last Jedi is good for is special effects and action. I hate everything about the new canon of Star Wars.
TLJ (yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaar) and the Han Solo flick will probably be the only SW movies I will have not seen in theater. I hope Disney treats a new set of movies in the universe better next time.
With JJ back on the last one, I'll probably go see it.
TFA and Rogue One (best new SW film IMO) are the best so far IMO.
And yeah, was never a fan of the Super Star Wars games and sold them around 1998. Got them on the Wii again (cause why not) and still hated them.
My favorite of the original trilogy was Empire Strikes back. This one reminded me of that one, not in that it was similar to it in the same way that TFA was to ANH. But it was a little bit weirder and gave you more to think about. TFA gave you questions about origins, like Snoke and Rey, but that’s not very interesting to me. TLJ makes you ask more interesting questions.
As for Leia Poppins, I don’t know why people hated it, other than she looked like Mary Poppins with her arm stretched out. It was important to show her arm that way, because it made it more clear that she was the one using the force to save herself. If she didn’t I might have wondered at some point, if Kylo had in a moment of weakness saved her. They needed to make it very clear that was not the case. Leia saved her own life in a seemingly impossible situation, because the resistance needed that kind of hope.
@thesilverbrick I heartily agree with you on The Last Jedi being way better than The Force Awakens.
Every complaint I've seen about it so far boils down to "it wasn't exactly what I was expecting." For one, I'd much rather be surprised by a big franchise entry like this zagging when it could have zigged instead of just rotely filling in the numbers in predictable ways.
Such a good movie. So much attention paid to having solid, supported themes and not going for tropes all the time. The connections between the mains were much more interesting and not simple good vs. simple bad, who will win? There's a deeper crucible the heroes must go through and (spoiler) we get to watch the formation of a new rebellion like hasn't been shown in any other Star Wars movie. As much as people dismiss the Finn/Rose adventure it shows a more complete view of the Galaxy and shows how the resistance organization was not enough, not to mention it finally gives Finn a broader empathy. Just because the adventure ultimately fails (big time) doesn't make their journey useless. (Another theme nicely shown, as well as told).
In fact, many of the complaints I see are plot oriented, where the characters going through so much is brushed off. People who get more out of the character stories might be more forgiving of the plot elements, I suppose. Plot people want their expectations filled, and this movie subverts plot expectations several times.
However, people calling it the same as the other Star Wars movies are distracted, willfully ignorant, or just aren't paying attention, in my opinion.
Also I feel many people fall into the negative trap of complaining and don't realize that you can create a negative list of qualities for literally any movie and make it sound bad or the same as other movies. Spoiler alert: Stories have similarities! Star Wars movies have even more similarities!
The most disturbing complaint to me is people complaining about Rey's super important parentage. The message in the movie, that greatness doesn't come only from lineage, is pretty clear and wonderful and people spit on it. The "force" explanation is in the movie as well and basically spoken about directly, yet people say it's not in the movie or refuse to acknowledge it.
But see, I do get that. I thought the movie had a ton to say and packed in quite a bit of unexpected turns. That type of thing tends to disorient people on a first viewing causing them to miss things.
I really didn't expect the backlash for some things, though, and it gets me really curious. I see people complaining about Snoke. How would these people have survived not knowing about the emperor for 16 years after Return of the Jedi where he was portrayed as "just a really evil pompous guy"?
I've only seen it once, and I like to leave distance between viewings because watching it right away tends to just make me reinforce what I just thought the last time and tick off moments as things I memorize rather than enjoy. Kinda ruins the movie for me even if I like it. That said, I'm really looking forward to watching it again.
This is nothing like the SNES games. This is like the old LucasArts games of the 90’s.
Does NintendoLife even know what the old 90’s LucasArts games were like.
