Disgaea 5 Complete, released alongside the Switch in Japan and in May in the West, provides a huge amount of quirky, complex strategy gameplay for those that embrace its 'niche' approach to storytelling. We enjoyed it enough to give a recommendation in our review, with the proviso that it's a commitment to get into it fully.
It's proven to be a reasonably successful release, too, albeit its hefty price and limited physical retail stock hasn't helped its cause. Nippon Ichi Software has reported that sales of the game have passed 100,000 units worldwide; as the game never cracked the top 20 in the Media Create charts in Japan, it seems a decent proportion of those sales will have been to gamers in North America and PAL territories.
For such a quirky and full-on title that figure seems about right; it offers a huge amount of content, but it undoubtedly lacks mainstream appeal.
Are you one of those that picked up Disgaea 5 Complete for the Nintendo Switch?

Fantastic game! Definitely exceeded my expectations, and the localization team did an awesome job too.
Deserves another 100K
Got it at launch but not played yet. Impressive for such a niche game.
Love Disgaea. Keep em coming Nippon Ichi!
I had a hard time getting into the demo on this one so I have not bought it, yet.
Nice! It's great to see that after so much dedication to the game, it's doing better than expected. I'm more interested in Fire Emblem when it comes to tactical rpgs, but I'm aware that this game is extremely competent and that some even find it superior to others in the genre.
The more competition, the better. That way fans of both series and other popular ones will get better products in order to be more succesful.
Awesome! Many of these Developers / Publishers are paying off big time for jumping on the Switch early. This game is worth the price! Took me almost 70 hours to beat.
Nice. Never played a Disgaea but picked this one up on recommendation. Still haven't played much of it, but definitely intend to plough through it soon. It's pretty fun!
I bought a physical copy and spent over 30h on it... It was fun until there were WAY to many choices on how to proceed and I got confused, kept making new characters, experiencing different options and finally giving up as I didn't know what I want to do anymore in the game
Nice to hear. Love the game. Slowly grinding my way through Carnage.
Too many other things in my gaming queue, I almost picked this up, but I want to finish FFXII HD Remaster first along with I have I am Setsuna I picked up for switch and Oceanhorne. Then on the backburner that I started and would like to go back to is Nioh and Nier: Automata. Backlogs are a good thing until they get too big!
@mateq I know Disgea can be a bit overwhelming, but until you finished the main story, you don't need to care about all the side stuff you can do.
I would just stick to the main story chars until the endboss of the normal game.
Is 100,000 good? Just genuinely curious. That's about 5m quid for a port of what is, I guess, a double-A game. Don't know what the development costs were, but I suspect this is a nice bit of extra cream. I actually spotted a physical copy of this on a shelf the other day - so far I've only seen it once in the retail wilds. Just about resisted adding it to my backlog, but I will probably succumb some day...
100,000 may not sound like a lot, but depending on the budget that can be an easy profit. Very nice to hear they're doing good.
This game is amazing except I seem tthat be one of the unlucky few with constant crashing, I haven't been able to have a single successful item world run without a crash before level 10, and now it's affecting my story mode. It sucks this game is so much fun thT I keep playing t despite losing hours of play time already.
I'm waiting for a sale............
Soooooo much content... I love it, but struggling to know what/how to do everything - for me there is not quite enough 'hand holding'
I seem to be more of a 'hit it and hope' rather than - plan it and enjoy
Awesome game. Very addicting and I love how the game opens up little by little so you don't get overwhelmed with all the different things you can do in the hub area.
Exceeded my expectations and will be looking out for future games in the franchise!
100,000 is alright, nothing major but it could increase with more time. I may buy it myself eventually when it's on sale.
Brilliant game, deserved better sales...
Does anyone have an approx. sales number for the PS4 version ?
Thanks.
@Wichtel You are probably right. I guess I'd be more into it if I didn't suddenly decide that I want a team of my own characters going through the main campaign... Maybe I'll come back to the game at some point, I quite enjoyed the massive amount of content, even though it left me too confused
@neufel 350,000
http://www.vgchartz.com/game/84506/disgaea-5-alliance-of-vengeance/UK/
Definitely on the radar, but with as many releases as we're going to see over the next three months, I'm not in any hurry.
@Wichtel interesting .... i restarted my first game save as i opened all the bonus content worlds and just got totally lost.
maybe i'll reopen it and try your streamlined approach.
its things like 'innocents' that confuse me.... and squads... i am but a simple lad. Really liking I am Setsuna - thats got options, but limited enough!
This game is awesome. I love it on switch
@Duffthemonkey Are you playing a physical copy or digital? I have not had any issues with the item worlds? If digital you may need to reinstall it.
@Shellcore Thanks for the answer and even more for the link.
Those are solid sales. Not counting the DLCs.
The port was probably cheaper than creating the game from scratch, so yeah, 100k games seems pretty good.
Best third party game on switch.
@Duffthemonkey If you are playing it digitally and using an SD card, you might want to test downloading the game to the console memory. I had a bad SD card which caused a lot of my games to constantly crash due to "corrupted data", transferred them to console storage, now no more issues.
Well if they at 100k now total... The so called 110k pre-orders in the EU/US evaporated (or was just BS). 60 dollars was just overpriced, even with the random DLC we didn't care about when they first came out.
Once they reprice this to 29.99/39.99 they will sell a bunch more, just like Lego Undercover did.
I played the demo and loved the character but hated the gameplay... not for me I guess but I'm glad to see it do well
I played the demo and turned around and bought in within a couple days. I've since dropped more than 150 hours into it. I hope we get a Disgaea 6 in the future on the Switch as well. This game is outstanding being both portable and console based.
This ensures more Disgaea on Switch which is good.
@Duffthemonkey Did you download it, or is it retail? If you downloaded it, try deleting and re-downloading it. If Retail and the card is defective you might be SOL. Thankfully I haven't had that issue. I hope you can figure it out.
DOOD!! ...dood.
I'd be playing way more of this if Zelda wasn't so damn good. I find the early maps are a bit small so there's less formation building and way too much entry tile cheesing.
Thanks for the advice guys, it's a digital download, I've redownloaded it 3 times, currently to my hard drive, and have no other issues with any other games. I've also tried changing the music to scandal, and the voice to japense, not battle invaders, make enemies go into revenge mode, and made sure this is the most up to date version. Still crashes literally at least once everytime I play, but like I said, I still love this game, I'm only on chapter 7 though, and I've heard other places that no one has any issues after the main story is beat, so I'm just gonna plow through that, which is hard to cause I want to savor this game forever, and beating the story mode is gonna be bitter sweet.
Since they surpassed 100k, they should celebrate and give it 50% discount. Then more people will buy it.
Lovely game. Highly recomended. Better than Fire Emblem for sure.
@wariosmith One of the things with Disgaea is, that you have a lot of options, but you don't need them.
I personally had the approach of only using certain simple features and whenever I was getting used to it I was looking at the next feature like "So, what could I do with that...?"
That way I could learning everything in my own pace, since the game really isn't pushing you so much that you need everything.
It's really different in that way, usually if a game introduces a feature it is something you kinda have to use. Not in Disgaea.
Was waiting but after seeing stock disappear on many sites, I found a reasonably priced copy at my local Argos and snapped it up. Still haven't started it but hope to some day.
@Krillin_ for this franchise it is
@FX102A I got mine from base.com for about £37
@Krillin_ Well the original version on PS4 sold about 350k off of a base of around 60mil PS4s (18.5mil as of the game launch) as of 2017.
Comparatively this port has sold around 100k off a base of about 4.7mil Switches (2.74mil as of the port's launch) as of July 2017.
Assuming the game's sales were extremely frontloaded (which is usually the case), that means that the port sold about 30% of the original's sales so far off of a Switch base that was either 15% of the base of the PS4 base at their respective game launches or a total Switch base that was 8% of the total PS4 base.
In either case it means from proportional standpoint, the port either outsold the original considerably or massively (less reliable calculation as, if the games were heavily frontloaded, the effect on sales would have been negligible over that long of a period of time).
So glad to see one of my favorite series finding love on another platform. Disgaea really should be enjoyed by more people. It'd be crazy, but great, to see the next Disgaea game on PS4, Switch, and PC.
@Agramonte Overpriced? This game has more content than Splatoon 2 and ARMS, and both of those games are 60 as well.
Im curious to play this game, but its still too much expensive.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE do you have a Switch yet?
This is way too complex for me! Just don't have the time!
It's definitely on my wish list for Autumn. However I am on a mission to complete quite a few games this summer.
Maybe I'd have bought it if weren't too outrageously expensive. This game is $20-25 too much.
I'm one of the few that had the special edition sent to me on release day. I love Disgaea unconditionally and hope to see future sequels come to Switch and future Nintendo platforms. Definitely a strong title that deserves at least three times the sales it currently has.
Capcom and Square Enix take note of where the bulk of those sales came from for such a "niche" Japanese title.
@Yasaal No way! I'd say it's expensive for it being a sort of "not-super-known-in-the-west" title, but the price is CLOSE to a good reflection of the polish and content within the game. I'd say it should been about a $45 release. I got it used and then used a buy 2 get 1 used deal at Gamestop (with a 5 dollar off used coupon to boot). Probably wouldn't have paid $60. But this is not a $20 title!
Played the demo and then bought it at launch, but haven't finished it yet. Been distracted with a bunch of other games that launched since then. Really need to finish it before classes start up lol.
@NEStalgia lol, in Dutch it means dead. Dood=death LMAO
This game is awesome! I played the demo and was up in the air half way through, but once I completed the demo it was an easy decision to purchase the game. Reading online it will take roughly 100 hours to complete. I just started stage 1 of chapter 9 (35+ hours to get this far). I'm playing through main story and then I'll move on to the DLC content.
@NinjaWaddleDee It is a straight port of an old game. I got zodiac age for 39.99 on preorder. The entire .Hack collection is 49. 60 dollars for a port of a 2 year old game is absurd.
Give us moar games! The hunger...feed it....
Good for them, it's a great ("SUPER") game and the Switch is the perfect platform for it. I've put about 40 hours into it so far. There are a lot of confusing options, and it's easy to get lost, but I've had a lot of fun just messing around, taking some side trips to item worlds, slowly progressing through the story. I love the snarky characters, and the gameplay is a LOT more tactical than Fire Emblem or any other strategy title outside of PC gaming. I hope they sell another 100K in time and bring more Disgaea to Switch.
I'd say that's solid number for a niche title on a system with a small install base and from a company with a reputation for poor third-party sales.
To address the Japanese sales, typically when it came to the Sony portable ports of Disgaea, Nippon Ichi had much better bonus materials than just the DLC in order to get double dippers. They took the lazy approach when it came to the Switch and just bundle the existing DLC and didn't add anything new to it. Also, it docked mode it doesn't even change the resolution (it is running with portable clocks while in docked mode). The sales of the over 100,000 when PS4 version only did 172,000 (confirmed and not that VGChartz pie in the sky number of 350,000) is more than what Nippon Ichi deserve honestly.
@Ernest_The_Crab Your number for the PS4 version is wrong. 172,000 was the latest confirm data that was released by Nippon Ichi.
@Malakai Is that Japan only or global?
If that's global then the Switch version did even better than I thought it did.
EDIT: Oh that's global. Huh, that means the port did very well in comparison.
If Xenoblade X can only sell 900.000 then 100.000 for this is a massive success.
I got the game, and I gladly paid 60€ for it... over ARMS, Splatoon 2, or MK8D.
This is something fresh, laid-back, story and character driven, with the content to back up the price.
On PS4 all the DLC alone is 35€!
So doing the math it's 25 for the game + 35 for the whole Disgaea 5 Season Pass which makes it all the more reasonable.
Anyway you put it, for 59,99 you get at least an 80-100 hour story, and 200+ hours if you want to complete everything, and if you still haven't enough, there's 35 bucks of DLC left to activate and make it part of your story mode that adds another 100+ hours. ^^
@Alucard83 That's interesting. I wonder if that's a coincidence or very intentional considering prinnies are supposedly the souls of human criminals that died and are forced to be servants as prinnies
Awesome to hear! I quite enjoy this game.
It might be a good game but 100k worldwide ain't special, actually it's terrible. I thought it would sell more than that in Japan alone
@NEStalgia
@Duffthemonkey I guess that is a problem with the digital version perhaps?
I have a physical version, I've played around 60 hours, with many trips into the item world up to levels 20+... not one crash up to now.
I hope you can solve your problem.
best strategic series ever and perfect for the Switch. Hope we get more!
Glad games are proving to be successful. This hopefully encourages others to want to put their games on the switch. I mean the switch has been doing great with game sales, what puzzles me is how capcom can't clearly see that. Hopefully they open their eyes soon because they're gonna regret it later.
Anyways I haven't picked this up yet but I will maybe in a couple months when MHXX on switch has burned me out(which probably will take more than a year.. oop). But I will definitely cop this eventually.
I am 1 in 100000 and can report I have barely played it. The music in the home zone is terrible! It looks interesting in terms of gameplay but the weird penguins are off putting.
It's absolutely well polished. It's just so weird! It was also super dooper expensive compared to any other platform version of the game. And including DLC content to try to sweeten the deal is kind of meaningless when I have not even started a game yet and don't care about additional content.
It's definitely not bad but as always stated even on NL it's definitely niche. I enjoy having it in my collection but it confuses me.
@EDF It might sound bad, but considering the install base and the potential budget needed for this series, it might actually be very good for their standards.
It's on my "to buy later" list, but glad to see it doing well. It's a pretty good attach rate when you think about it.
@bolt05 That music is pretty grating, but there is a character in the home base that can change it for you.
@RaizenPrime ok I will check that out, thanks! I know you can turn music off in the menu but I don't necessarily need it turned off its a bit lonely or incomplete when you turn music off in any game I think.
Just to qualify, I actually liked the song initially, but it's in a weird key and loops very tightly and becomes far too repetitive. Grating is a good word.
I got the physical version at launch. I've only played a few hours, but it has been really good so far. Hopefully, it maintains momentum for the rest of the game.
I'll get back to it eventually. If you haven't tried it yet I suggest giving it a shot.
Got the limited edition.
Pretty good for such a niche game.
I genuinely want it but can't afford it. BOTW, Splatoon 2, Mario + Rabbids, & eventually Odyssey are bigger priorities for me. I really loved the demo though.
@Dang69 I don't know... The demo seemed like it didn't have depth. And a demo should have a lot of goodies if you really wanna attract customers (like me) who are on the edge of buying or not buying the product. Just my opinion. I might buy it after it gets a cut or after Nintendo releases their horrible MyNintendo Switch rewards system...
Cool! It probably helps that it always seems to be one of the like 6 games on Switch shelves in stores. Great game, deserves the sales, although a price drop would be nice
@Syntaxkita
PS4 figures have already been quoted in the comments. 350k. So 100k on Switch is pretty good.
Created an account just to pop in and say I've got this on the ps4 and the switch (you know, for portability!) and it's absolutely worth the money. Hoping for more tactical games like this on the switch moving forward.
@bolt05 I don't know whether there's an option to turn the music off, but you can change the music in the base to any track in the game that you've heard up until that point. You can do the same thing for Item World, as well.
