Splatoon was always bound to be a game focused primarily on competitive multiplayer, but that didn’t stop Nintendo from developing a pretty cool single player campaign as well. Playing something like a Super Mario Galaxy-esque take on Splatoon, there were some interesting gameplay ideas and boss characters explored over its short length. It was more or less assumed that Nintendo would be going with something similar for Splatoon 2, and the company just showed footage of the new single player campaign at the end of the ARMS Direct.
The new footage sees an Inkling encountering Marie—not Cap’n Cuttlefish, interestingly—as they take the fight to the Octarian threat once more. New gameplay concepts have been added in—like grind rails, boost pads, and trampolines—and it seems like there may even be a sidequest-like element with “Sheldon’s Requests”, which task the player with using a particular weapon for a stage. It all looks quite fun, and will no doubt serve as a nice addition to the main game modes:
What do you think? How did you like the single player in Splatoon? What do you think it’ll be like in Splatoon 2? Drop us a comment in the section below.

Looks great. Can't wait!
Trying to imagine how insane the end boss will be after the first game's final showdown...
Let's hope it's a little more fleshed-out this time around. The single player campaign was one of my favorite parts of the last game, but it was over far too quickly.
And I'm calling it now: Callie is going to be the villain. She went crazy after losing the final Splatfest and joined the Octarians to get revenge on Marie.
Looks good. Wonder what else is gonna be in this fantastic game.
Anyone else got the feeling that the ingame footage was more than 720p? Or am I imagining things?
Lets hope this singleplayer mode is eely good, I doubt people wouldn't want to spend their hard earned squids on something that's not octo expectations.
Looks tentacool so far though.
@WiltonRoots that was my favourite boss fight in a long time! Can't wait for this game to drop
I was already sold on this, a good single player campaign is an important addition, though I think the price will go up.
Looks like more of the same from first one, which isn't bad because the campaign in Splatoon 1 was awesome! I just hope it is a bit longer this time.
@G0dlike Same here! Needed a breather afterwards!
Looks like it'll be Marie vs Callie this time around....until Callie comes to her senses or we find out she's been infiltrating the Octarians and that's when the real mastermind shows up, Cap'n Cuttlefish! (or an escaped DJ Octavio) DUN DUN DUUNNN!!
@Lizuka Wow. Go back and play. It's pretty great, just short... which is fine by me with limited time to play games. I mean maybe you won't be into it, but I found it really fun leaving me wanting more.
@Dev
We must do all in our power to bring our queen back to the light.
I still can't see Callie or Marie being evil, that seems so out of character for them. My money is on Dj Octavio being the final villain again, with Callie helping him out due to some blackmail or mind control.
I feel like I might be more excited for this than the actual online modes! I love the story and gameplay that was developped in the first game and this looks even better! Though I will be disappointed if Callie is the villain, seems a little too generic without there being much of a motive behind it.
Now THIS is exciting! A focus on splatoon single player!
This didn't change my mind - I already planned on getting Splatoon 2. But that trailer... WOW! Totally didn't expect it to be so packed full of content! Can't wait till July!
@thesilverbrick I think she will be the final boss, but kidnapped and brainwashed by the Octarians.
I hope single player is good because I don't like multiplayer games anymore and would only get the game for that.
This is what I was waiting for. The fact that there A is a single player and more importantly B looks polished and not just a throw in put this in the day one buy.
My girlfriend is addicted to Mario Kart and she has been looking at YouTube of Splatoon and Arms. I'm still not sure about Arms, at least not at full price, but I think I saw enough to trust in Splatoon.
Callie didn't like losing that final splatfest so she turned into a villain. Hot damn what a twist.
I hope they bring back the invisible areas, one of my favorite parts, it just worked so well.
Not sure if I'll be getting Splatoon 2, but I'd rent it for the single player portion. Well if Switch games are rentable, I haven't looked into it yet.
@thesilverbrick I agree, the single player was over before you knew it in the first game. What little was there was very enjoyable. They should really flesh it out this time.
I think the Octavios captured Callie.....
The single player portion with the hub world is an interesting choice. There's a nice fusion of cool and weird going on in the aesthetics. Looks like the single player portion would be good for a rental, but it's not worth a buy unless you play online.
Just looks fantastic.
Feels like we're in a new golden era of Nintendo software. Wii U and 3DS games substantially upped the anti vs Wii and DS games, but it seems every big game they're dropping on Switch is pure gold. Zelda, Mario Kart, Arms (which after that Direct? Heck ya, the game looks mint), Splatoon 2... and you know Xenoblade 2 and Mario Odyssey are gonna be GotY worthy titles (heck, XC2 may even challenge some of the best JRPG's of all time).
That's why I love Switch so much. I mean, it's fantastic hardware in its own right with unprecedented functionality, and sets a new bar for portable gaming while introducing an entirely new lifestyle for gamers (console/handheld/tabletop seamless transition). But the games... the caliber of the games is what's making the system fire.
This looks inkredible.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE Part of me clings so heavily to the single player element of Splatoon because when the servers go down someday, that's all that will be left. It's kind of sad, when you think about it.
SINGLE PLAYER! I mean I knew it would be there and it is still where I spend most of time but oh boy it looks good. Somehow having the squid sisters involved gives it more of a narrative hook than the local crazy guy.
...but seriously how much acid is the dev team on? Looks very trippy (in a good way).
Oooo looks good
Man, the music in the trailer has such an odd charm to it. I love it.
Can't wait for July 21st.
Looks awesome. So glad I have this on preorder.
i'm going to annoy everybody with 'for eel' until i tire of it or they give me an intervention.
Looks great! I'd love the Splatoon single player and I'll be happily jumping into this one!
Cool. It's looking like this game will live up to legacy and quality of the first one and hopefully more besides.
Callie is evil and the reason why she didn't make it into Calamari County is because she was abducted and mind control by DJ Octavian.
the tunes were jammin...
It seems like the star/leader in this game is Marie due to her Splatfest win...
If so, I'm really glad that happened. Her wit makes for more interesting dialogue than I think Callie's more cheery or potentially airheady dialogue would have been (if the roles were reversed, it'd be a depressed/worried/indecisive Callie, which would have been less interesting imo).
That echoing laugh at the very end is Callie's. Very strange!
I actually like the look of the singleplayer more than the multiplayer, so this is very tempting for me!
I was very nervous about the fact that I'd sold all my Wii u gear to fund a switch (especially as the switch hasn't arrived yet). Watching this footage of ARMS and Splatoon 2 makes me feel much more confident! It looks fantastic! Bring it on!
WHERE IS CALLIE?!
Lol. This looks promising! It still has the vibe of Splatoon's singleplayer mode while adding new things into the mix. I love it!
It's really interesting that they took the results of the Splatfest in consideration for the single mode. Nice way of listening to feedback!
