You've got to hand it to The Pokémon Company, it knows how to embrace the culture around its games and entertain fans. In around a day a quirky video has been rapidly approaching one million views - is it a new game reveal? Nope, it's The Magikarp Song.
A lighthearted ditty to the weakest Pokémon in the biz, it's already proving popular. You can see the video and lyrics below.
Totally pathetic, unreliable.
Known throughout the world
for being super weak.
Maybe in ancient times
it was really strong.
That’s what the rumors say,
but they’re probably wrong.
But now it’s so weak,
the weakest in the land.
So weak that it’s sad,
really really sad.
The weak Pokémon,
that’s you, Magikarp.
But though you are the weakest,
still you’ve won my heart.
Oh, weak Pokémon,
my love for you is strong.
Honestly, it’s magical
you’ve survived this long.
All it does is jump and splash,
jump and splash around.
It splashes up whole mountains
and all the way back down.
Why jump? What’s the point
when nobody cares?
It uses Splash in battle.
Nothing happens.
Jumping and splashing,
every single day.
Until Pidgeotto…
carries it away.
The jumping Pokémon,
that’s you, Magikarp.
Although your moves are pointless,
still you’ve won my heart.
Oh, splashing Pokémon,
my love for you is strong.
Honestly, it’s magical
you’ve survived this long.
Wherever you go fishing,
it’s the first you’ll catch.
Even with an Old Rod,
you’ll soon have quite a batch.
Cast off in a river,
or a puddle, or the sea.
Anywhere your hook is,
Magikarp will be.
The slightest current
will carry it away.
Anyplace the river bends…
that's where they all stay.
A nibble on the line…
that's you, Magikarp.
Right back in you go,
because you’ve won my heart.
Thought I caught a bite…
but it’s Magikarp.
I could never eat you…
because you’ve won my heart.
Its Shiny form
sparkles golden in the light.
But don't be deceived.
It's still Magikarp inside.
Evolving into Gyarados
makes it super strong.
Waiting to reach that level
takes way too long.
Did you just buy one
at the store yesterday?
Sorry, there’s no refunds. Please go away.
The pity Pokémon,
that’s you, Magikarp.
Although they think
you’re worthless…
still you’ve won my heart.
The pity Pokémon,
Magikarp, it’s true.
At least your lowly ranking…
means nothing to you.
Beloved Pokémon,
that’s you, Magikarp.
Somehow you’ve turned weakness
into a kind of art.
You’re my Pokémon,
Magikarp, my dream…
Six matching Magikarp,
that’ll be my team.
Beloved Pokémon,
that's you, Magikarp.
Magical and special,
of course you’ve won my heart.
The greatest Pokémon,
Magikarp, it’s true.
And that’s why I’ve written
this love song just for you!
A Grammy awaits, right?
Thanks to all that sent this in!

Feebas > Magikarp
Catchy. But... why?
Magikarp: The absurdist hero in a mad, mad world
@ThatNyteDaez
Opportunities to capitalise on it with merchandising after making it a popular thing.
There's a 3DS home theme of the Slowpoke song for example. There could easily be one based on Magikarp too soon.
I don't know - get a high level Pokemon, give Magikarp an Exp share, and boom - a rather more useful Gyrados!
@ThatNyteDaez I think the better question is.... Wynaut?
The Splatoon Diaries are out-fan-factioning actual fan-fiction, and now the Magikarp Song out has out-fan-songed practically all fan-songs.
Not that I mind though. This really is a charming ode to that most floppy and futile of fish.
lol I needed this in my life
Wasn't a Japanese-only version of this video a thing like a year ago?
I'm still not sure if this is more funny, weird, or just plain depressing.
Keep abusing a Magikarp and your fate will be grim. Team Rocket found that out the hard way.
When you can´t damage anything to save the life of you but you at least get a nice catchy song out of it.
At least it's great once it evolves.
Exceptional. Although it is the weakest in the original 150/151 list. Including up to the latest batch of Pokemon, is it still the weakest?
@Zeargo : Cosmog and its evolution Cosmoem have usurped the title of weakest Pokémon ever (to the best of my knowledge). They are so weak that they cannot cause damage via attacks (though they potentially could if you gave them a damage-inducing held item, such as Rocky Helmet). But otherwise… useless.
The Pokémon with the lowest base stat total was Sunkern up until the release of Generation VII, where it has been bested (worsted?) by the solo form of Wishiwashi, which has a slightly lower base stat total (however, its school form has a very high base stat total that makes up for it).
Magikarp has the 9th lowest base stat total of all Pokémon, tied with its Gen III counterpart Feebas, Scatterbug and Cosmog, so it's still pretty low on the food chain.
I think Unown, Luvdisc or Trubbish are most in need of a song next. They're way more unloved than Magikarp.
I Love What ?!
Heh, that was cute.
Why would you eat it!?
@MarinoKadame
"Feebas > Magikarp"
If you think Feebas is worse than a Magikarp, shouldn't it be:
Feebas < Magikarp
?
"Someday, I'll evolve and kill you all!" -the most emo pokemon in the world.
@AirElephant It's just I prefer Feebas over Magikarp, both are about on the same level except Feebas can learn some more stuff than Magikarp can't.
Lol.
Meanwhile, Jason Paige made a Pokemon Go song over 7 months ago, and it has yet to reach 200k views on YouTube. How utterly disappointing.
Listened to this yesterday. It's oddly catchy and has a great story. I love how they've made all kinds of songs lately for no good reason.
@RyanSilberman 'Tis truly a cruel world in which your Pokémon Go song doesn't get over 200,000 views on YouTube...
i think only reason is was so powerful in the past was because basically every fossil pokemon of the past was a rock type.
@BraveSonic Wobbufett!
I would have never guessed that I needed a Magikarp song in my life.
There's only one REAL Magikarp song... and it's awesome!

@Maxz And one from the singer of the original Pokemon theme song no less.
Cute, funny, well done.
Big things have small beginnings.
....The Slowpoke Song is better.
@crimsontadpoles Yes. I've always appreciated Unown... even if his unchanging moveset is sorely lacking.
This was fantastic. Magikarp has always been my favorite pokemon, glad to see it get some love.
I must either be too old or on a different wavelength to everyone else because I thought that was chronic...
