Mario Kart 8 Deluxe was certainly a worth remaster of the original, sporting all the DLC and a full Battle Mode in a nice new coat of paint. Considering how complete the package is, it seems unlikely that the game will be receiving even more content, but that still hasn’t stopped Nintendo from updating it to make tweaks here or there.
As of now, the game’s first major update can be downloaded, bringing with it a myriad of little changes to improve on the experience. Here are the full patch notes:
- Opponents’ names are displayed in the rear view mirror view in online matches.
- Invincibility period after a spin-out or crash is longer in online matches.
- Up to two players can spectate a friend group while they wait to join.
- “Worldwide” and “Regional” modes add players to Mirror and 200cc matches less often.
- Can now properly create a friend lobby when you have 100 or more friends.
- Inkling Girl’s animation has been adjusted.
- Starting positions in online races now properly reflect the order in which players join.
- Driver Miis now properly showing facial expressions.
- Tournament clock now properly reflects real-world time.
Nothing game changing, but it’s nice to see that Nintendo is keen on polishing it up that extra bit more.
What do you think? What are your thoughts on Mario Kart 8 Deluxe? Do you think Nintendo will do more DLC? Drop us a comment in the section below.

Wow I'm first! lol first time ever!! Anyway- I wouldn't mind more courses but if not then bring on MK9!!
I'd love to see new DLC. The original DLC was great
Edit: the "surprisingly hefty" update is 32.4MB, BTW...
Just saw it when I was playing Minecraft lol
I wouldn't object to new DLC. The Wii U MK8 DLC was really well done.
Great changes all around. Especially happy about the longer invincibility in online matches. Hopefully more DLC is on the way!
"Driver Miis now properly showing facial expressions."
YES! Thank you, Nintendo!
I wouldn't mind more DLC, but I want them to move on. Really curious where they'll take it after this.
I'd be surprised if there wasnt new DLC given how well its sold. Even if that wasnt the plan, the far more bigger userbase then the Wii U version must be tempting them.
Wonder if the Youtube feature's ever coming back, or they'll save that for whenever the video capture update comes through the share button....
Nice little additions......
Now, please give me an option to turn off MP driver assists by default.
"Inkling girl animation has been adjusted." But How many frames of animations has been added or deleted for the change? The Mario kart meta needs to know as this could potentially affect her tier rankings!
"Worldwide” and “Regional” modes add players to Mirror and 200cc matches less often."
What!? We wanted less 100cc and now they do this? What's wrong with Nintendo? The game feels TOO friendly and blring now
@OdnetninAges
I was just about to comment about that myself.
For some reason, it was seeing that as a part of the patch put the biggest "dumb grin" on my face. As a guy who played the original 8 near-religiously, the fact my Mii was a 1000-yard-starer in Deluxe was a sad sight. Nevertheless, now I can finally see him in all his , >:{, and glory.
I'd love to do at least more 150 and mirror online. I'd like to know more about that animation tweak. Was it controversial or just not up to snuff?
@StarmanSSP Yup, that's exactly what they did.
"Considering how complete the package is, it seems unlikely that the game will be receiving even more content"
I think you might eat those words someday down the line
Classic Nintendo, removing inkling girl's up yours animation.
When Nintendo updates Inkling girls gesture.
@Undead_terror did they remove the gesture? If so, it sucks... Why even bother? It was just hilarious...
Item Spy should be set on left hand side of the screen, or maybe any other player with the thought bubble showing the lightning bolt or Boo.
Also, PBS Kids' show "Super Why!" marks the 10th anniversary and the Super Why Characters should be in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe as DLC. Super Why shares the horn sound with Shy Guy, Wonder Red shares it with Daisy, Alpha Pig shares it with Koopa Troopa, Princess Presto shares it with Rosalina, and Woofster shares it with Wendy.
@daveh30 You have to remember Nintendo and most modern Nintendo fans are woefully behind on the times. Hence a 32gb console again and 32mb being "hefty"
I didn't realize Inkling girl made any sort of a rude gesture until this update.
Heck, it looks more like a "We Can Do It!" girl power pose than an up yours gesture.
The gesture that Nintendo changed is considered to be extremely insulting to many countries such as France, Spain, Italy, Georgia, Portugal, Greece, Latin America, Brazil, Mexico and other Spanish-speaking countries, Colombia, Turkey, Malta and many more.
@daveh30 20 years ago, a 32.4MB file would have taken all night to download.
@Cosats where you on Nintendo Everything?
I'm open to new DLC under one condition. Waluigi Pinball for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.
To me, this is the most complete, definitive Mario Kart ever. I wouldn't mind getting extra tracks, though. 😛
Haven't gotten my hands on the game yet.. :'D
A speedometer in Time Trial mode wouldn't go amiss ...
@Menchi187 And yet accomplish in 32Mb what other companies seem to dish out 1gb patches for.
For the size of the console (and price) did you expect a desktop/laptop hard drive in there (aka PS4). Stop Trolling cos Trolling.
I'm kinda if regretting not having a Switch now.
These things, I didn't notice. What does that say about me as a gamer? Was enjoying the game nonetheless...
Kinda strange that so much was wrong in a re-release. Why haven't they let players que for 50, 100, 150, and 200 cc yet?
So I see the Inkling Girl's animation has been changed. I don't know, it wasn't a big deal to me, wasn't even aware of it. Ya, it's considered an insult in Latin American countries. I remember a Spanish student made that gesture to me many years ago. It meant nothing to me, I didn't take any offence.
Wow. I can't pretend I noticed any of these issues, but it's an impressive polish nonetheless.
What about multiplayer lag issues I heard in deluxe version? They fixed that or it's on hold till payed online features later this year?
Brilliant 👌
I would love more DLC additions to this already substantial package!
— More Nintendo IP-inspired packs, such as Kid Icarus, Kirby (after all, it is his anniversary) and Star Fox. But how about ARMS and a ramen bowl course!
— Characters. We really need E. Gadd, Birdo, Nabbit and Yarn Yoshi for starters!
— New items would be fun. A spring punch from ARMS would be perfect, as would be the Poltergeist 3000.
"Up to two players can spectate a friend group while they wait to join."
FINALLY! Seeing this stupid error message was irritating: https://twitter.com/RadioTails/status/861247658911866880
Now Nintendo fixed it.
@MetaRyan I know right? That is how I took it as well. I thought it was cute. but I've also never seen it used as an insult gesture where I live (we are boring and just use the middle finger where I am, which is a pointer finger in many cultures so ymmv) so perhaps it is more offensive in other places.
It's sad they've reduced how often Mirror and 200cc appear. Seeing chaos unfold on stuff like 200cc Dragon Driftway, Rainbow Road and Neo Bowser City is both extremely fun and hilarious.
@Angelic_Lapras_King I don't understand what you are saying. What far bigger userbase? You talking about game sales because that needs to hit 8 million to reach Wii U levels.
I want a random character and kart selection on Double Dash. It's the only way to encourage friends to experiment with different configurations.
This game is a 10/10 masterpiece. Still I'd keep those new courses and fresh ideas for "Nintendo Kart"...
@xxAcesHighxx
Ooh... !
I wanna see Springman / Ribbon Girl / Byte & Barq / etc appears as DLC characters + ARMS themed vehicles + ARMS themed tracks.
Also, wanna see Breath of the Wild costume for Link as DLC contents.
For Mario costumes, I prefer all Mario costumes stacked into One like Mii costumes, so whenever you choose Mario it will appear sub Menu to choose one from a lot of Mario costumes such as Fire Mario / Tanooki Mario / Cat Mario / Metallic Mario / New 3DS Faceplate Mario / Flying Squirrel Mario / etc. Same does with Princess Peach / Daisy / Rosalina.
For Animal Crossing characters, I wanna see more Villagers variation from ACNL both Boy & Girl, but it would be better if Nintendo put a Racing Games inside Animal Crossing Switch.
@Anti-Matter Man, I like your thinking!
Haha! I thought the same thing!
@FragRed

I own MK8 and have played it a lot, single player, local multiplayer, and online multiplayer.
I've seen a lot written about what was added in MK8D, but nothing about what was changed for the worse or removed.
Can anyone with the game please share what has become worse compared to MK8, if anything?
Or is there an article about it someone can point to?
“Worldwide” and “Regional” modes add players to Mirror and 200cc matches less often.
^This is extremely sad. With 3500 points I maybe had 3 or 4 200cc races and only a couple of mirror ones, so the rate of those matches was already very low. They should instead increase the rate, rather than lowering it. I find 200cc really engaging and it truly tests your skills rather than simple lack, like everything up to 150cc does
I think/hope the Mirror/200cc thing is actually something to do with the VR requirement, rather than the chance of those classes appearing when the requirement is met.
I had mirror and 200cc quite often. Like 2/10 of races were only 150cc some times. I can see why they reduced it.
Invincibility period.. Is it now longer or removed from online play? I read both on other articles.
@Blur_Escalation So, one of the three modes happened to appear slightly less than a third of the time? Why should 150cc be more common? Heck, with even chances you're still racing at that speed two thirds of the time.
The patch notes here are copied from the cited nintendo.com source, so I should hope they're correct.
I'll download the update when I get the time to do it.
I'm glad the invincibility period is a little longer (if true). It should hopefully reduce the massive chains of destruction where a blue shell opens you up to a red shell, followed by another red shell, followed by fireballs, followed by a piranha plant, followed by a Super Stsr, followed by a Bullet Bill, until you're sad and alone back in 12th place with no coins and no will to exist.
It's been too easy to slide right back through the pack for a single mistake in the past. I doubt that's gone entirely m, but hopefully it should be less common.
I'd rather the gesture be modified to be a Spaceball salute.
@Zyrac
Sometimes I just want to race on a normal track. It doesn't matter how fast they are. If they evened out the chances to 33,33% each, that's fine.
GameXplain and other sites stated no, so I was a little confused about that.
*Driver Miis now properly showing facial expressions.
YES!
@mandlecreed Would love that. Also a way to be more competitive with your friends regarding ghosts, and your best times.
@daveh30 I don't think the "hefty" part refers necessarily to the size of the download but that it is heavy in what all it fixes and that it's not a miniscule minor patch.
I'm especially pleased that the Mii expressions are back. I'm hoping a future update will allow us to swap between two items being held.
Patch notes! My newly expressive Mii shows [shocked face]
I would like them to put in a Mission Mode. That was awesome in MK DS and gave single players a lot more to do. Why haven't they used it since? Great though the multiplayer components are, now Nintendo has portability all along it's hardware line - it needs to bulk out it's campaigns and other solo experiences - most of the time the Switch is in undocked mode your going it alone right? (or online). Let's hope Splatoon's single player mode is substantial and shows that commitment. Anyway, yes, if anything could be added to this otherwise prefect game - Mission Mode, Mission Mode, Mission Mode please. I'd pay DLC for that.
@Tsurii Personally I'm fine with this censorship. The times I think developers and publishers should not bend is when a game is rated over E-10+ or its equivalent around the world. As an adult, I shouldn't have a different experience based on where I am living.
I just whish the next MK9 (pretty sure will be on switch to capitalize on the momentum) will not get out soon. I mean, I under-played MK8 because I didn't like the Wii U. I just want a year or 2 to really appreciate the game. Never thought I'd say this, but I kinda wish this game would have another DLC.
@FTL Nintendolife's sarcasm went whooosh! straight over his head...
@OdnetninAges
What was up with the Mii faces before?
too many comments.
@SKTTR
During races, they kept the exact same expression on their face even when hit by an item or when winning or loosing. This was creepy, and didn't make sense, as a Mii could be doing the loosing animation, but still look happy or indifferent depending on what you set your Mii's facial features to.
Now it works like in the Wii U version, where the Mii's expression will change depending on the situation.
