I remember playing this back in the day, think it was the first game I ever completed.

I never played the third game, but can remember the first of the series back in the 80s/90s (one on my C64, still own it ) But this looks like my type of game.

The more I see on this game the more I want it.

I've grown to appreciate when games have gender options (and I just like the concept of distaff counterparts in general). If the gameplay is the same and the story is flexible for it, why not implement the option?

Loved this game back in the day but it's been so long since I've played it,'m curious to see how much I remember.I think what I'll do is play through the 8bit original on the handheld and once done,play the modern version on the TV.Sounds like a great plan.

You've still got a Game Gear? Wow. I had one as a kid, I remember that thing sucking down a truckload of batteries. Also had that bulky clip on magnifier, and the sound was so so so poor quality, graphics too... [looks at Switch]... We've come a long ways with handheld gaming

@Equinox That time period has pretty much come and gone to be honest. Agendas will only be pushed more and more as the years go by.

Not really surprising in today's gaming landscape. But when it's done without feeling too forced or like it's trying to be too political, and people have the freedom to choose who they want to play as, I have no issue with it. Also, both the male and female characters look good in both the new and old styles, so that's nice.

@Equinox what the heck are you talking about? Body swap mode in shovel knight was a stretch goal in their kickstarter. People paid for a stretch goal the created. Nothing forced about it.

Seriously? That's pretty freaking awesome. I've heard stories of ppl fixing up old systems and tricking them out... if you could somehow get a rechargeable battery in there too? That would really set it off.

I'm hoping (not now, certainly not now) but I'm hoping at the end of Switch's life span it'll get homebrew, cause I want all the retro games on one, portable, HD system, and it would also be on console as well being a hybrid. Right now 3DS is closest I have for that, with Wii U covering GC and Wii, but this could be a retro gamers dream. Every system from NES and Gameboy through Wii and DS, with Genesis and Game Gear to Neo Geo and SegaCD... all of it.

Unless it is a piece of media that a person themselves personally likes, then it's acceptable.

Character design is great, and this is a pretty cool addition in any respect, but what is the implication? That girls are so insecure that they cannot possibly be comfortable playing as this male character?

Would be neater and far less vain if Wonder Girl had transformations and attributes differing from her counterpart, though.

A lot of game players like to see a bit of themselves in the characters they play as.

@CharlieSmile I don't think there are many male players upset by the idea of a female lead. This isn't grade school.

The contention, rather, is that forcing an exact female clone of an established male character just for the sake of gender equality implies (very falsely, in my opinion and experience) that female players need to play a particular game as a female character to enjoy it. Why dilute a character's uniqueness simply because he may not be the same gender as the player? Why can't female players see bits of themselves through male characters (and vice versa)? Honest questions (and nothing personal, of course).

That's cool. But I have no idea who they are.

Wasn't Wonder Girl from Monster World 4, the one with the blue Pepelogoo? I know her name is Asha, but it would be cool if "Wonder Girl" resembled her instead, or if her name was Asha. Just to harken back to the olden games of yore.

@CharlieSmile the funny thing is horizon shows the dark side of a female led society yet breath of the wild (which equinox is probably playing) has a feminist plot line. You know the whole (spoilers) links recklessness getting himself and the champions of hyrule killed and Zelda marching into the castle alone to fight Gannon for a hundred years. Talk about power and sacrifice.

I am for gender equality and everything. After all, I have enjoyed playing as female characters in the past (Bayonetta, Dead or Alive Xtreme, and Soul Caliber all had robust female leads). However, after hearing this new feature in Dragon's Trap to include an optional female lead, I must say I'm sickened by this political agenda. Thus, this game will not be a day-one buy for me.

That said, I'm intrigued by the artwork of the game, and I don't want to come off as sexist, so I will likely buy this game eventually. I want to make sure to get it at full price to support the developer. So, if I calculate my current disdain for political agendas, multiply it by the current internet drama, and then factor in my appreciation for gender equality, this game will be a 23rd-day buy for me.

Also, in case you all missed it like I did, Dragon's Trap give you an ENTIRE GAME for free after you buy the option to play as a boy or girl. Quite nifty, if I say so myself.

My first thought was "This better be in the 8-bit version." LOVE IT!!

Wow, this thread. It would be a good idea for some of you guys to get out of your parent's basement from time to time. Females aren't that scary.

On the bright side, I learned about some cool Game Gear modding, and I'm inspired to dig mine out of storage and take it for a spin. After I buy a big box of batteries of course.

@Dakt Zelda wasn't sitting around, and definitely wasn't in need of rescue. She literally spent 100 years, PLUS the time it takes for Link to get to the final battle, keeping Ganon sealed away with her goddess powers alone.

Literally no one else could have done that. Link messed everything up in the first place by pretty much losing to Ganon.

@Dakt did you forget the multiple times throughout the story when various characters point out how Zelda can't hold Gannon back much longer? Doesn't sound like sitting around to me.

@Equinox I don't see why there has to be any emphasis on the "boy" part. As Shakespeare said, what's in a name? Wonder Boy is not a deeply beloved character like Mario, Link, or Sonic. And even Mario, Link, and Sonic have Peach, Zelda, and Amy if someone wanted to make them playable. (Edit for word order.)

@Dakt That was the order given by the King and the Sheikah. Zelda, Link, and the Champions were all forced into their roles because the King decided that repeating a past strategy talked about in legends would work.

@CharlieSmile I'm unfamiliar with the context, but following your statement, how does disliking a female lead's appearance = disliking female leads in general? I highly doubt many (or any) female players would find the lead from The Ooze attractive, but that doesn't lead me to assume that most female players hate the idea of male leads.

(Note that in this very comment section, several who questioned the inclusion of Wonder Girl still found her design appealing)

@Equinox yes and no imho, while it shouldn't be necessary, these kinds of additions are awesome and should be appreciated when made available. This doesn't feel forced at all, and will please a lot of gamers who identify better with a female character.

Why does diversity always equal political agenda? I feel the people who say that might as well say that anyone who is not them should know their place which is the most prejudice thing someone could say. I understand complaints with feminists and such when it involves censorship but there should be know problem with additional characters.

In fact part of me is glad for the SJW movement as it causes people to think about inclusion when they otherwise wouldn't have. As long as the inclusion can make sense in context I don't see the big deal. If it doesn't make sense in context then that the industries fault for not being creative. Don't blame that on political correctness.

@CharlieSmile Absolutely they don't.. but when you're commenting on a public board about your reasoning behind your choices, I'm here to point out my thoughts on those choices. If the developers chose to leave the classic game the way it was and update it without a female, they should not be supported 'less' because of it, nor would the game be any less 'interesting'. It's simply a 'slight' colour pallete/animation change.

Basically, I'm just saying, the game is *(hopefully) going to be fantastic. It seems curious and strange to base your interest solely (as you mentioned you had none before this announcement) on whether they added a girl hero to a game that was already designed 28 years ago (not like they were making it a male for no reason).

And honestly I'm just glad another person is interested in this game, but for that reason to be not based on 'this game is seemingly fantastic', but instead that 'this game has a character with long hair', is more than strange. So yes. Enjoy =)

@brandonbwii Funny thing about Pac-Man... Toru Iwatani originally made the game specifically to appeal towards both men and women, because both like eating food. (The fruits and desserts in particular were added in an attempt to appeal more towards women.) So creating a "Ms." Pac-Man (not even Pac Woman) pretty much defeats the original point of Pac-Man.

@brandonbwii Do you not see the difference between 1. creating a brand new character or game with unique features (like Ms. Pac-Man) and 2. adding a clone character whose only defining feature is that she is female (like Wonder Girl)? Do you believe diversity is only worth achieving if it is superficial diversity? Because this is exactly that.

Political correctness is conforming to superficial rules to appeal to superficial audiences in order to "raise awareness" about superficial dogma. This is precisely why Wonder Girl, with her vanilla presence, is here. Her design is good, and it's very impressive that the team programmed her into all versions of the game, but it's an overall shallow addition, and ironically, pedantic towards females.

God forbid a female gamer would be forced to control a male sprite on screen: how could she ever enjoy the game? Come to think of it, I can't believe I, as a man, ever enjoyed games like Metroid, Tomb Raider or Beyond Good and Evil. And I even lowered myself to playing Ms. Pac-Man and liking it.

Sorry, but this whole idea of having to "identify" to the made-up, fantasy cartoon characters you control in video games is just so ridiculous.

It has been this way for years. Remember kids toys? For every My Buddy there was a Kid Sister. There is also a black Barbie. Why is there a black Barbie when she's known for being a white blond. It's not political correctness, it's called good business sense.

For the argument of males not having problems playing as female characters so why should women feel any different: The answer is men get FAR more options. Male Avatars abound where as smart female protagonist in games have pretty much all been named in just a handful of comments in this section.

Now let me try to think of black protagonist. Um, well I guess there's all those open world CRIME games but not much beyond that.

Women have it better, but not by much.

If it isn't profitable to do so, then this an example of poor business sense and possibly of persistence of the manufacturer to spread a specific message through this practice. Regarding your example (possibly, in the financial sense) or any the like, it isn't objectively wrong to intentionally sell a consumer product at a loss, but good business sense it most always isn't.

Again, why do you think superficial (and sometimes arbitrary) qualities like gender and race are matters necessary in order to enjoy a game? Do you think most females are too insecure to enjoy a game unless they are playing as a character with the gender by which they identify? Do you think most black people are too insecure to enjoy a game without playing as the race by which they identify? If not, then we're already in agreement.
