Battletoads - along with Rare's back catalogue - may be owned by Microsoft these days, but NES owners will always have a special place in their hearts for Rash, Zitz & Pimple, three radical amphibians with plenty of attitude.
Created at a time when Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles dominated TV, gaming and toy aisles, Battletoads was an action plaftormer which ramped up the difficulty and crammed in plenty of original ideas, and was rightly hailed as a smash at the time of release.
It triggered a series of titles across Nintendo systems (and the arcade), all of which are covered in this new video by Daniel Ibbertson, the host of Slope's Game Room.

I want this franchise back on my switch more than any other!
So many memories of co-op of Battletoads in Battlemaniacs on the SNES with my cousin. Took me around 10 years to work out what the different was between the two different co-op modes, after many many friendly deaths!
Was an absolute beast of a game for a 5 year old me to attempt, and I was probably better age 5 than I am age 27.
Great co op game
Never did like Battletoads back in the day and played it again a couple of years ago and didn't like it then either.Love the characters, love beat-em-ups but not the game for some reason.
My son played this for about 5 minutes yesterday then stopped b/c it was too hard. Fortunately there are 29 other games on the disc so I'm OK with him moving on, we bought it, and the X1 it was bundled with, for Banjo anyway. First 10 minutes of Conker is the best game opening ever, and I think it had more voice acting in 1999 then all of Zelda BotW in 2017. that's a joke people, relax, see the
I really hope Microsoft brings this franchise back soon.
Watched this yesterday, it's a good video as all of his are.
I have only ever played Battletoads in Battlemaniacs on the SNES. I found it too hard, but also my brother chose it over Mario Kart and so it's always left a sour taste in my mouth. We did get Mario Kart in the end, but I have never trusted my brother's opinions on games since!
It would be nice to have the games back on there real home.not the bs xbone.I'm glad I got the original copies of rare replay.from the new games to snes to the 64.
@GravyThief wow the years when gamers became true gamers.this generation will never be true gamers since most games hand walk you.not make you play the game
@Slim1999
Um...if I can say, some young generations today even can't play simple RPG or simple Adventure games. They play Minecraft or the clones or Shovelware too much. They are too lazy to think so complex games like we used to be when we played RPG games or any complex games.
I remember that the big one, Pimple, was often "kidnapped" in the Battletoads games. Also looked at it as a bad TMNT ripoff. Only good thing about it to me was the pause music.
Only really played the battletoads doable dragon on snes one. Dont remember the other battletoad i played. Loved it. Still listen sometimes to the music.
As usual, he did a wonderful job on this video. Last week's Rolling Thunder history was great too. I love that series.
However, I had Battletoads when it was new and I do not share the same enthusiasm for the game or series. Rare had some obvious programming skills, but their game design was hit or miss. Some love Battletoads because of its high challenge. I found it to be obnoxiously hard and I got pretty close to the end. I prefer games that are, perhaps, a bit easy, but are fun to come back to. In the case of Battletoads, I had to ask myself, even as a kid, why I was playing it if I wasn't having fun.
I had BattleToads on the GameBoy back in the day. I couldn't get past stage 2 lol. I rented The crossover game with Double Dragon on SNES a lot and couldn't get past stage 3. I have Rare Replay and playing the arcade game is pretty fun, but it lacks online play. Rash is also playable on Killer Instinct which is cool but a new game needs to be made.
@rjejr "My son played this for about 5 minutes yesterday then stopped b/c it was too hard."
He hasn't lived until he plays the racing scene. If he hasn't you must force him to play the racing scene. It's the most infuriating piece of gaming history and you will teach him to spew obscenities like a sailor in 10 minutes flat.
@sdelfin Only the cool kids were up to the challenge. That's why. And you knew this kid who's brother's best friend could beat the whole game in an hour because it's soooo easy!
Battletoads for NES is my favorite game of all time. Aproximately 10 years ago I decided to make a speedrun and uploaded it for youtube:

@NEStalgia HAHAHAHA That's so true! First game in my life that I rage quitted and came back to over and over just like some lame relationship.
For me the best NES game of all, and my favorite tied with Mega Man 3.
It's very challenging but so rewarding when finally finishing it
DiC!
Never played Battletoads, but if I find NES copy of it, i'll pick it up.
Time for a battletoads reincarnation on switch!
Loved Battle Toads!
Loved this game, and it caused me and my brother to make a pact: In order to insure that no controllers were smashed, whenever this game caused us to boil over with rage; we were allowed to punch the other in the arm to vent some steam. The racing stage in Battletoads, and the dam level with the pink seaweed in the original TMNT game are what I think of when I think "Nintendo hard".
Very nice review in total, but I didn't realize the arcade game was done last. Its my favorite of them all by far.
