We knew that Monolith Soft was working on something for the Nintendo Switch, but one of the surprise reveals at today's Switch event was that of Xenoblade Chronicles 2.
Not a whole lot is known about the game so far, aside from the fact that it will apparently be a continuation of the first Xenoblade Chronicles. Also, it appears to be adopting a more chibi-like artstyle this time around, as opposed to the relative realism of the previous two games. Interesting times to be sure, this'll be one to keep an eye on.
What do you think? Do you like the new art style? Do you think it was a good choice to make this one a direct sequel to the first game? Drop us a comment in the section below.

I've got to finish the first two games first...
I loved X on Wii U.
Never played the original, will have to play it now.
And this sold me the switch.
I don't like the new art style, their previous style was new and refreshing.
Being a sequel to my favorite game of all time, it has a lot to live up to. Makes me wonder if X was just an experiment to get ideas for gameplay in Xenoblade 2.
If this game is half as good as the original, I'll love it to death. I was on the fence about getting a Switch, but now I'm sold.
I am somewhat surprised that they're making a direct sequel, since the first game tied up the story pretty well. I can't wait to see how the story unfolds.
Really liked the Wii game. I wanted to like X but it was a bit too much for me. I had no idea what to do most of the time
So will this be a sequel to Xenoblade chronicals or to Xenoblade Chronicals X
Take my money now!!
Insta buy.
I liked X, but I missed the fantasy setting.
Can't wait!
Also that tree gives me some Secret of Mana Vibes.
I am 100% buying a Switch, no questions asked.
xeno 2 saves the day
i hope it will trump X
YES YES YES YES YES YES. I have more to say
i was like "oh ok not an up port of XcX that's cool" then i saw the 2 and got chills, adored the 1st game can't wait will definitely buy
It's probably a long way off from release, but still... It was very unexpected and exciting to see footage of it.
Cool, but I wouldn't want to play through another game with the same boring battle system.
I enjoyed the first game a lot, but I'm ready to see Monolith try something new.
...Or old, if they could somehow give Baten Kaitos another go.
I will try to finish both Xenoblades before this launches.
A sequel to one of the greatest games I ever played? Yes please!!
I just hope their next game will continue XCX. That story NEEDS to continue.
@MadAdam81 new how? Looked a lot like some ff games. Not saying this is better or anything but the previous style was hardly unique imo.
I adored XCX, I need this so bad!
Glad to see this here. Hopefully there's nowhere near the wait between announcement and release as XCX. Not sold on the character art, but it's Xenoblade. This basically means that I have to buy a Switch.
@Dakt FIRST GAME IS BEST GAME EVER BOI
It'll be interesting to see how they pull the series together now that they are creating a true sequel after the 'spiritual sequel'.
I've got a theory that would allow for XC and XCX to be tied together into a single overall storyline, and if that's right, then we should see evidence to support it in a sequel to XC.
Since it probably won't be out anytime soon I'm glad I got some more time to spend with Xenoblade for 3DS. Too many games so I was always leaving Xenoblades for later, now I can pick it up and get into the hype. I'm glad it's not a port, but a whole new game :3
I hope they still make a sequel to XCX! BUT, this one definitely had me sold.
Beat XCX, still need to play the original
The Switch is really shaping up to be a console to take on the the competitors in a pretty one-sided battle. Xenoblade Chronicles captivated me with its enchanting atmosphere and storytelling like no other game has since first playing Chrono Trigger. Given its predecessor, the fans rightfully hold high expectations for this game.
Nintendo, Monolith Soft—come in swinging. We want this game to surpass the first on every level. Also, some inclusion of persistent online multiplayer would be pretty cool.
@MadAdam81 Chronicles X2 should still look the same. This is more fitting in with how Chronicles looked imo.
This is just what I was hoping for I really like the art style, I think it looks good.
The footage for this looked really cool! All the more reason for me to get around obtaining and playing the first game.
So this is the actual true sequel to Xenoblade Chronicles, does that mean Xenoblade Chronicles X is a spinoff then? Either one is a spin-off or they are separate series continuing on with their own story just like the original Mega Man and Mega Man X.
Looking forward
Hm... looks good from presentation. Maybe I will pick it when I got more gameplay reveals.
@MadAdam81 I agree. I'm not a huge fan of the art direction of this title. While the other games somewhat had that 'anime' look this one looks like a generic tales-esque art style. It's by no means a deal breaker for be. If the story is great and the gameplay is great then I have no real issues at all.
like!!!
The new Monado equivalent isn't nearly as cool.
The character design looks like a cross between Fire Emblem and Tales of. I like it.
This right here confirms a day one switch purchase for me. Incredibly excited for this!
Too much hype.
@kotag yeah looks awesome. At 1st I thought its a remaster port of X. But was floored with this announcement.
I was invested as soon as Monolith's logo came up. But a sequel to Xenoblade Chronicles?! I can't believe it. I didn't think they would go back there THIS soon.
Thank you so much, Monolith!
I am so getting this but... um I liked X better.
This is certainly a high calibre of game. Should be good.
So excited for this. What a huge year this will be for Nintendo. Day 1.
Awesome! looks like they went back to there roots. Which is good. I dislike the direction they went with Xenoblade X
Umm they can't even number their games correctly. It should be xenoblade chronicles 3. This is the third game of the xeno series in the xenoblade chronicles sub series just like Xenosaga 1 2 & 3
I'm glad they're trying new art styles to keep things feeling fresh with the series. Definitely a Day 1 purchase, loved the other two!
Am I the only one who thinks that the font of the title screen looks so bland? Maybe I'm just used to the design of the first two. This one just looks to clean.
Thank you, Monolith. Thank you, Nintendo.
@ProfessorToad
Chronicles. If it was going to be a sequel to X, it would have been called Xenoblade Chronicles X2, obviously.
@Arnold-Kage
The Xenosaga games are all part of one story though, so them being called 1, 2, and 3 makes sense.
Xenoblade Chronicles started as a standalone game, and Xenoblade Chronicles X was supposed to be a spiritual successor and has nothing to with the first game other than some thematic elements. This game is called Xenoblade Chronicles 2, which implies, along with the over all style and the "Monado" in the trailer, that this is a sequel to the original Xenoblade Chronicles.
Edit: To add, it doesn't seem like they want to go for a Final Fantasy or Dragon Quest type of numbering system. I think if they were, then Xenoblade Chronicles X would have been called Xenoblade Chronicles 2 instead of this one.
I'm really not feeling the art style.
Also I don't get why so many people didn't like XCX. Personally I prefer it over the original (not that the first game isn't great).
The art style is bit much of a change maybe, but like the two games before it story and game play are key... Hopefully this will be out this year as soon as it is I will get the switch, if I don't already have it that is.
@KappaBeta I agree I love both games and hope will also get a Xenoblade X2 at some point as there are so many ways they can take the story
So happy! I just want to see the battle system.
This looks horrible.
First game had great ideas in a mixed bag of overly too big areas, world map and story length overall. Still pretty enjoyable.
I've got to try the second one, although the open world concept (even bigger than its previous iteration) draws me away from it. I don't know what's wrong with the industry these days, they try to make games as big as possible when most of that time could've put into fine-tuning everything, to create a perfect experience, under the right size for it to be enjoyable and not repetitive for no reason. The small details are what makes Majora's Mask vastly superior to OoT in my book. It didn't rely on a bigger-everything to succeed or show up technical specs ("look, Hyrule Field is a barren wasteland where you can check the N64's power. Look at how far that tree is"). The dungeons are more compact and better designed, NPCs, towns, everything seems have more room for interaction and enjoyment.
Less is more I'd say... and that may also apply to Breath of the Wild when the time comes.
Immediately looks better than Xenoblade X.
This is the best day of my life
What an awesome new look for Xenoblade. I prefer the anime look over the semi-realistic look of the previous games.
@rushiosan I agree with you. Some games these days are just too big and often too long. Just because they can do it doesn't always mean they should.
I'm super stoked for this. I loved both of the predecessors, but one of my critiques was their art style. XC had terribly muddy textures and something about character models in XCX was just... off. I think going with a more stylized look is a much better choice for them, and I'm glad that this one will continue the first game.
Also, to point out something obvious but interesting, that long shot at the end was an obvious reference to the Title Screen and Box Art of the original. From the tilt of the Monado, the grassy field and the towering figure in the distance. Curious to see where they'll take this game though.
@potatomage7
I think they were probably working on this while making XCX and will be working on making XCX2 when XC2 is nearly done.
At least I hope so. XCX was amazing !
A sequel to Xenoblade in the vein of the original is also extremely exciting. I love the hell out of X, but my sprawling open world quota will be more than filled by Zelda and so I'm ready for a more story-focused experience again this time around. Also Xenoblade Chronicles is one of my favorite RPGs ever, now that I finally played it.
Suprised by the reveal and actually getting to see footage. Excited. Day one order on this I think
I'm not keen on the cute art design of the characters. However, the rest of the game is looking great.
I loved Xenoblade Chronicles so I hope they can recapture some of that magic and create an experience on that level again.
I hated Xenoblade Chronicles X so maybe I'll just pretend like that never existed now.
@GinHunter
Thanks for the help as i was a bit confused as i liked both of the xenoblade games myself. Plus while i did watch the presentation it was more like wow omg a new Xenoblade Chronicles then actually paying attention to what sword or items their were in the game because of how early it was .
The hired a proper character designer!
And the composer is the same top notch guy.
Then we see a lot of janky, stiff animation and NOT the name of an animation director.
Well, can't have it all. Still looks mighty grand.
@thesilverbrick Ahhh jeez, same here. Thanks to this announcement I'm now required to buy a Switch, so I guess I'd better get to work.
I'm not terribly thrilled about the character design... but I AM terribly thrilled about an RPG sequel that actually takes place in the same world as its prequel. I loved that world and will be more than happy to go back (though I also really like Xenoblade Chronicles X and would like to see more of that world/story, too).
Its bittersweet.... I'm so excited about a new Monolithsoft game, specially a new Xenoblade!
But on the other hand, I wanted to continue XCX's story, specially after that cliffhanger, and I wanted to continue piloting my lovely Skell. What's up with Mira, Monolith?!
While Im going to buy it, I really wanted a sequel to X, considering the frickin cliff hanger it left us on. And i enjoyed that game a lot more than the original one, ( in all fairness, I have yet to finish the first). But a sequel to X would have made more sense.
I haven't played the previous 2 Xenoblade games. It looks like the kind of game that makes me wish I had a Wii U.
When the trailer started, it felt a little weird "aren't the characters a bit too... anime-y?" I have no problem with anime art style, but the previous art felt so right, I've got to say it's odd in the least.
I dont love the new art style but we will see!
Not keen on the art style, but it's nice to see it isn't a port of Xenoblade chronicles X.
@kotag Agreed this solidified it for me too!
It looks incredible but I never made it through the much hyped first game. I made it around 60-70% and quit. So I'm not super excited about this.
My bro and I were super excited to see this. Hopefully the music isn't as sucky as X.
@dparmar005
Finish the first one. Incredible story, and IMO... Better game.
@dkxcalibur Why did you quit??
It looks like a sequel to Xenoblade chronicles, but it has also a different artstyle. Especially the characters. Not the horror-faces from X, but not chronicles either.
I hope its easier to get into then X. X is very hard to get into, I am still not very far.
@Miles_Edgeworth To be honest, I got bored and there are a lot of games to play in a short amount of time. I don't like quitting once I start, but I wasn't into it.
NO I don't like the chibi new art style!
I hate it when Japanese do that with gaming and anime!
It basically ruin everything for me!
@NickOfTime90 Last FF I played was X, which had an anime CGI look.
