Last week Nintendo finally gave the world a glimpse of its forthcoming Switch console with a special preview event. During the footage, the console's physical form was shown off as well as simulated footage of software in action.
Nintendo has since revealed that more information will be coming in January, but in the meantime Nintendo has stated that the original YouTube preview event was watched by a staggering 23 million people - a figure which rises by the day - and audience reaction was 95 percent positive.
Hopefully that means the system has enough awareness to be a smash-hit in March. Nintendo has confirmed that two million units will be available at release, so if just 10 percent of that 23 million intend to make a purchase, the console should have a pretty special launch period.

I really wish this kind of marketing style. So sophisticated. Not is it only fun to play Nintendo, it's cool! #Millennials
The video has 18mil so that also includes jap and eur views?
You also have to remember people repost the video on YouTube. It all adds up in the end.
I honestly think Nintendo may be onto a winner with the Switch
Count me in that 10 percent
I wonder how many of those people will actually buy it. Someone needs to compare this trailer to the Wii U trailer with likes and dislikes.
@SnackBox Yeah, that's total views across Nintendo's YT channels
It's pretty impressive that so many people have watched it and liked the idea. It's promising that the Switch will do much better than the Wii U. Although a good chunk of the views are probably from people viewing it multiple times too, trying to find little details. I know I've gone back to watch it 3 or 4 times now.
Nintendo Switch is all over the place. Everybody ask me about it since I have to know more about it as a long-term Nintendo fan...
I've watched it 20 times.
I've rewatched a couple of times myself. Had to show it to every friend and family member I could get a hold of.
That doesn't mean anything
@MortyKoopa Of course nobody knows what a pro bundle or a basic bundle is.
@MortyKoopa I my home town there were only two Wiis at launch
I bought them with a friend without preordering. That is a funny story since we probably would have killed each other if there were only one console...
23 million views =/= 23 million people. Some people will watch multiple times and some viewings will be by more than one person at a time. I watched it with my wife looking over my shoulder, so that's 2 people for one view.

The Wii U sold 3 million at launch. I don't see how selling 33% less than Wii U could be considered "pretty special", looking where Wii U is now.

Wii U launched Nov 18, so those sales cover only Dec and 12 days in Nov even though it is dated "April-Dec".
I'm glad it's been watched so often and positively reviewed. It was a great little ad, a whole lot more than I expected to see. All I expected was Reggie and Bill saying "Tune in Jan 12 for the NX reveal, now officially named "Switch"." And pointing at 1 on a table, maybe passing it back and forth. So from that regard the video was a smashing success. New 3D Mario,MK, Splatoon, Skyrim and basketball. And the 1 piece hybrid a lot of people want to seamlessly play on the go or on the TV.
But the sales will be about details, and we don't have really any of those yet.
1. Games. Neither Skyrim nor basketball nor 3D Mario has been confirmed at all.
2. Battery life.
3. Hardware price.
4. Storage. Most people would agree Vita is an awesome little piece of hardware, but those very overpriced proprietary memory sticks turned off a lot of people.
A great video in October doesn't automatically make for great sales in mid-2017. They'll sell their 2 million initial shipment, Wii U sold 3 million at launch, but what happens after that? Nobody knows.
While it doesn't mean 20 odd million sales, it does mean there's more interest in this than there was for the Wii U reveal trailer.
Twenty-three million views are impressive, but how many of those are repeat views? There are folks who have watched the video many times (especially those looking for Easter Eggs), each adding another view to the count.
2 millions of units at launch is very low. Probably I'll buy only on may or july
I have watched it more than once.
I have downloaded the video from Youtube also, so I can show to people what is Nintendo Switch.
Number of views does not equal number of viewers.
Great start Nintendo! Keep the momentum going!
Whilst I am no avid YouTuber, and have no idea how that viewing figure compares to other YouTube videos, that sounds like a colossal number to me. I'm guessing there isn't an equivalent Wii video from back in 2006 that it can be compared to, as a point of reference?
If this helps more third parties decide to release games for the console, then that would be a great outcome.
I just happen to keep running into the remaining 5 percent then.
Of course, I'm really glad to see such a positive reaction to the Switch!
Ha ha, ha ha, yeah!
@GravyThief
"I'm guessing there isn't an equivalent Wii video from back in 2006 that it can be compared to, as a point of reference?"
YouTube wasn't a big thing then and 'social media' as we know it today didn't exist...so you are correct.
I think the view count shows interest/awareness only, and isn't a good indication of potential purchases.
That assume that each person watched it once...
Great news!
I won't be picking the Switch up at launch, but it's a guaranteed purchase for me in the future!
Not as good as the PS4's Reveal, but MUCH better than the Wii U's.
@BionicDodo
Psycho Pinball rules.
@rjejr
1 Doesn't mean they're not gonna end up on the system just because they haven't been "confirmed" yet. It's all but guaranteed given they were showcased.
2 Fair point. We all want to know that. And if an extended battery will be sold down the line.
3 As discussed previously, $300-400 is the range. For many, a $100 swing won't be the deciding factor.
4 Difference is Nintendo has pretty good history now of not using proprietary memory cards. So I think most people aren't too worried. Even 3DS and Wii U could take SD up to the largest size they make (512gb) provided you formatted to FAT32. And Switch will be no different. And if you ever fill the built-in storage and the additional 512 GB, hopefully by then they'll be selling one terabyte SD cards
@JaxonH Well I think those games will probably be on Switch, but w/ Nintendo there are always caveats, you know that.
Remember when Wii U got Mass Effect 3 for $60 at the same time the other 2 systems got ME 1, 2 +3 for $60. And how Watch Dogs was delayed. So I half expect the original Skyrim while PS4 and X1 get the new addition. And why would Switch even need that when it gets open world Zelda? And why show basketball but not FIFA or Madden? Getting basketball would be a great addition, but FIFA is the big one.
And yes, there is a big difference between $299 and $399, you can't say $100 doesn't matter, it really does. PS4 Slim and X1S 500GB are $299, that's where Nintendo probably needs to be. PS4 Pro and X1S 2TB are $399. Switch with 128GB, if it even has that, doesn't match up. And the 3rd party game support has to match the price.
Too many unknowns. What are the odds Nintendo does everything that makes Switch look like such a better must own system than Wii U?
Yes, you are all in on Switch now, but we're you down on Wii U? We're you saying Wii U was going to fail b/c the Gamepad was a bad idea and it was too expensive? If you thought Wii U was good and it sold like it did, you thinking Switch looks good now doesn't mean it will sell. You have money, you likes games, you are the opposite outlier from me, you buy everything full price day 1, I buy things year later on sale. The general audience isn't either of us, Nintendo wouldn't be well served by having either of us on a focus group.
After January 12th we can have an actual discussion about it's actual prospects, there are just way too many unknowns now. The fact that we don't even know for sure if a 6" tablet has a touchscreen or not kind of blows my mind. Any other company in the world, Galaxy, or universe showed a 6" tablet whether it was a touchscreen or not would have been made crystal clear. The fact that at least 1 Nintendo rep refered to it as a "LCD screen" is not helping.

@rjejr
Actually no, I wasn't all in on Wii U. It was the system that I bought when I first started to get back into gaming and take it seriously. What started with an impulse launch 3DS purchase just cause I reminisced about Nintendo gaming as a teen, ended up with a further interest when Wii U launched.
I was having a blast with the system those first couple of years but I don't think I really was "All in" or all out. At the time I really didn't understand the market or what was selling or what wasn't selling. I was just playing video games and having a lot of fun doing it.
@JaxonH Well I stand corrected then, sorry for assuming.
It actually makes me feel a lot better actually about my sense of burn out, I've been all-in since Parasite Eve and FF7 in 1998, that's almost 20 years of following everything in the home console business - I've never been a handheld gamer - PS1 I just got, but I was very excited for PS2 and PS3, and very excited for Dreamcast, and Wii was the only console I have ever purchased launch month, and Wii U I wanted for Pikmin 3. So you'll have to excuse me if I'm not overly excited for Switch - what did you call me, buzz kill? kill joy? something funny - as I'm excited to finally be getting a PS4, and that's all the excitement these old bones can muster. ,-) Glad you are enjoying your renewfound hobby so much.
