As the world is gripped by Pokémon GO fever, you can't blame peripheral maker Hyperkin from leaping on the bandwagon in order to promote its forthcoming SmartBoy accessory.
The device connects to Android phones and allows you to load up original Game Boy cartridges and play them via emulation. Hyperkin's latest teaser for the SmartBoy has a clear message - soon you'll be able to play Pokémon on your phone the old-fashioned way.
The SmartBoy began life as a joke but is in fact the real deal. Hyperkin is currently seeking developer support to bring the device to market next year. The proposed price is $59.99.

Wooooooooheeeer.
Great idea, but overlooking one obvious thing - Ninty aren't gonna like it and could sue him for breach of copyright and intellectual rights. :-/
Like, whoa!.....
question for those saying a lawsuit is incoming: why can they be sued when it requires original carts and not something like the retron?
@Kit If that were the case then Nintendo would have shut down the Retron5 ages ago. There's no copyright being broken here are original carts are required.
Yeah, given that this requires original Gameboy carts I can't see why it would be stopped given that there are hundreds of emulators for sale on Google Play and loads of other clone handheld devices available to buy online like the SupaBoy and FC Mobile II (I love how ridiculous having a small handheld with a full size NES cart sticking out of the top looks).
Yeah, it's a kind novel idea and all, but "FUGLY" would be the perfect word to describe this thing.
@Kit @Kit It's entirely it's own thing, not some copy of Nintendo's Patented hardware or copyrighted software or whatever. It just happens to play Nintendo's games. There shouldn't be any issues on that front, from what I can see. In fact, just think about it as some unofficial third party peripheral that works on/with any other Nintendo console, like a third party gun attachment for the Wiimote or whatever; no one has to get permission from Nintendo to make these kinds of things, again, as far as I'm aware.
This seems neat but not practical. If you are going to take that thing around you will need to be able to store it (in your pocket or wherever). My point is that if you are already going to have to deal with that, for less than $60 you can pick up an actual GBC. If it's the screen you like GBA SP is still less than $60 online. Sure it still has the edge with the display, but it doesn't seem likely that anyone who wants to play gameboy on their phone is going to be willing to front $60 for the device, and then go buy carts after that. With android especially, it is exceptionally easy to emulate gameboy.
It just seems like there isn't a market for this. Maybe I'm wrong? I'll watch the comments here to see if any Nintendo fans are interested...
A Pokemon VC game and a 2DS cost 90 dollars, + it has access to Generationa 4-7 via cartridges and the eshop. If you want to play Pokemon, just get one of those! (And yes, I know it's just an ad, but Pokemon GO is the real thing anyway, so....)
That photo was... something...
My girlfriend's brother recently picked up a 2DS along with both Pokemon Y and Alpha Sapphire. He said Pokemon Go was too labor intensive.
@foodmetaphors Because Nintendo owns the intellectual rights to the GameBoy operating system, which you would have to reverse engineer in order to make such a thing work.
** looks at product **
** courteously abstains **
Pointless, you could already play Pokemon the old fashion way on another device, it's called the Nintendo 3DS.
@Alshain01 The Gameboy doesnt have an operating system. Games are programmed in assembly, written directly for the hardware.
