Guide: How to Be a Champion in Pokémon GO's Gym Battles

Here's something I just found out last night. You can have a friend join the gym battle while you're fighting to topple it twice as fast. As long as they start the fight around the same time as you, you'll see them around the edge as well and it should be easier to take out those higher level gyms.

If you do manage to knock out a gym, you will need to heal a Pokemon before it can hold a spot in a neutral or friendly gym. This gives a window of time where a sneaky Instinct player could waltz in unopposed and set up shop. It may be worthwhile to leave a high level out of the fight so they're ready to take over immediately.

Lastly but MOST importantly, GO TEAM VALOR!

I like the old style battles but I guess, they simplify it because it is on mobile. I welcome change!

Team Mystic for me. Good thing too since that’s the dominate team in my neighborhood with 2 gyms pass level 5. FYI, I knew that info 2 days later after I pick my team.

Question though, if I can’t leave my Pokemon in my team’s gym, do I have to fight someone for a spot or wait till it level up and have an opening? It only give me the option to fight.

@ultraraichu You will have to fight your gym to level up before you can place your Pokemon in your gym. Or you can wait till the lower cp pokemon in that gym gets taken out before you put your pokemon in.

I first thought that once you beat one of them, you take his/her spot.

I'll keep this in mind since one of the Mystic gyms near me have a CP 136 Ratata as the weakest and a +1000 Snorlax as the highest with 3 others (+500CP) in between.

You know tbh I like this battle system. Its a little more complex, or at the very least alot more engaging then the original battle system. But I feel that its still lacking. They have great ideas with you being able to dodge, type effects, special moves, ect. I feel that it should be worked on some more.

It's impossible for me to enjoy gym battles. First it was the glitches keeping me from winning when I had a chance, but now, not only is Team Rocke- er, I mean Valor dominant in my area, but there's some jerk that does LITERALLY nothing all day except drive around in his Ghostbusters car and play. He's taking all the gyms with his seemingly endless 1000+ CP Eeveelutions. It's forced me to give up on the gyms and just focus on the hunt.

Waste of time taking Gyms in my hood, pretty sure I too have a guy who just drives around playing Pokemon all day.

Gyms stocked with high Dragonites... Bit of a joke really.

Are the amount of Pokemon one can leave at a gym dependent on the gym's level? I can never drop off a member of my team at my local gym even though I am stronger than the highest level Pokemon at that gym.
