When you think of classic coin-guzzling '80s arcade titles then Capcom's Ghosts 'n Goblins will surely spring to mind. Tokuro Fujiwara's classic 1985 side-scroller was insanely hard and incredibly popular, and was ported to pretty much every home format going - including the NES.
Ghouls 'n Ghosts followed and boasted better visuals, improved controls and a difficulty level that tested players - the subsequent Mega Drive port ensured that domestic gamers didn't miss out, either. The SNES exclusive Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts took things to the next level, and would later be ported to the Game Boy Advance.
These are just a handful of the titles which make up the entire lineage of this series, and if you're hungry for more info then check out the latest video from Slopes Game Room. It details everything from the early origins of the franchise to the more recent PSP and mobile phone outings, and is well worth a watch.

Good to see they didn't forget about We Love Golf!
If the Devil danced in empty pockets, she would have a ball in mine!
I liked the PS2 series as well.
Yet again... Huge thanks to Damien and the rest of the Nintendolife crew for featuring my content
I enjoyed watching that video. My first experience with this great series was the original Ghosts n Goblins in the arcade. I was a little disappointed that they didn't discuss Maximo but still, it was a fun watch!
@bezerker99
if you liked this video wait until you hear this!
ill be providing you with a 5 day documentary on other m, very soon
yer most favorite game ever
I'm not much good at Contra or Mega Man, but I've always loved the Ghosts 'n' Goblins games. For some reason, it's about the only "hard" series I can play.
@ogo79 let me know when that is going to be happening so I can take the entire week off of work. Also....Rare Downloads ftw!!
@bezerker99
hahaha
Nice report! Too bad Demon's Crest didn't get an honourable mention though, amazing spin-off imo.
Really enjoyed the classic games, on console and in the arcade, not so enamoured with any of the more recent-ish games in the series. I do know, however, that if if were done right, a modern 2.5D game in this serious could be genuinely great. And I don't mean like any of the recent G'n'G stuff we've seen, I mean really done right. I'm talking the level of quality and polish that a game like Inside has in all areas, from the presentation and graphics to the controls and gameplay, and all in a stunningly realised world that plays to strengths of both playing in 2D but being rendered in full 3D perfectly:

Don't forget about Maximo, the spiritual successor to gandg. It left with such a cliffhanger in army of zin I was hoping that they would at least make a third just to close the story.
Man these games would be so cool on the 3ds.
I really hope capcom starts making games again.
@Megal0maniac
Demons Crest? The spin off of the spin off?
@SirQuincealot It was not mentioned as part of the series, so yea it must be titled as a spin off?
The second game's first level isn't harder than the original and it's not close, i would also suggest that the second one is the easiest game in the series by a fair amount and not the SNES title. The wonderswan game is neat and has a lot of cool boss fights. I personally found the PSP game disappointing and the graphics ugly but i should give it another chance one day soon. The iOS games had a lot of promise but the controls are just too broken. Cool video.
I'd love to have the true, coin-op versions of the 1st and 2nd games on Virtual Console. I'd cheat and use Restore Points, but it'd still be great to have them.
Good old Ghosts n Goblins. The first two where some of the best arcade games I played back in the day and I played Ghouls n Ghosts straight for nearly a week when I first got my MegaDrive. Ultimate on PSP is also my favorite in the series, though I never ended up getting 100% finish on it either.
As far as I know, Project X Zone 1and 2 where the last couple of games with cameo's from Arthur.
I hope we see this series again one day, this or the equally amazing Demons Crest.
Btw, I always thought Arthur would have been a perfect fit for Super Smash Bros.
Super Ghouls n Ghost on the SNES was a classic but also super hard.
