The amazing Sega 3D Classics Collection is available now in North American and Japan, with a European release coming later this year.
Sega has posted an interview with Yosuke Okunari, Kagasei Shimomura and Naoki Horii regarding the compendium, and it has been revealed that the team at M2 has something of a soft spot for Sega's 1987 run-and-gun arcade title Alien Syndrome, and even went as far as prototyping the game as a potential addition to the collection:
KS: So rewinding a little bit, before we settled on Power Drift, we had a couple of titles to choose from for this. We talked about Alien Syndrome, Golden Axe, Turbo Out Run, and even Columns.
NH: (looks at the lineup list) These are pretty bold choices.
– I'd like to see Alien Syndrome someday. Stereoscopic 3D would be really effective in that game.
NH: Oh that game is amazing. We did a little test on it to see how it would turn out and it was great. Although, doing every single stage would be quite an effort.
Alien Syndrome was ported to a wide range of home systems back in the '80s, including the NES, Master System, Game Gear and Commodore 64, amongst others. A 2007 reboot was developed by Totally Games for the Wii and PSP.
The full interview is well worth a read, as it goes into detail regarding the process of porting Power Drift and Puyo Puyo 2 to the 3DS hardware.
With the 3DS coming to the end of its lifespan, it could be that we've seen the last of these amazing 3D retro remasters, but which other Sega gems would you like to see? We offered up our own (slightly outdated) list a while back, but feel free to add your own selections below.

Golden Axe, Comix Zone, Streets of Rage 3, Kid Chameleon, Alien Storm, Ristar, Shadow Dancer, Space Harrier II... there's plenty left to tap.
Gameplay for this didn't stand the test of time but it still remains one of my all time favourite arcade classics
These all sound great to me. Please, M2, keep the SEGA 3D classics coming!
I find Alien Syndrome pretty "meh" to be frank...but anything you release M2, I will buy...anything...
Make this old guy a happy old guy Sega/M2 and give us HD classics.Individually ,Eshop only bundle or even retail only with an amiibo, whatever ,I'll buy the lot and I know I won't be the only one.
I Want WONDER BOY IN MONSTER LAND!!!! And All Wonder Boy saga!!!!!! M2 please!!!!!! I've buyed new 3ds only for Sega games!!!!!
I would be over the moon if we could get Phantasy Star 3D Classics. Particularly 2 and 4.
@Ralizah Um....how can those make much use of the 3D effect? Don't get me wrong, I love to see that happen but as 3D? I don't think that will happen. Maybe the first game can happen but I don't know for the latter.
Alien Storm is a game I'd love to see.
I would have thought they'd finish out the Sonic series before calling it quits on their 3D remasters. I gotta say, SEGA really went above and beyond by getting M2 to do as many of these titles as they have. Anyway, ideally, I hope they'd release the complete version of Sonic 3 and Knuckles as one full 3D title before they call it quits on these releases.
@Socar Tell me, how did Sonic the Hedgehog, Shinobi, and Altered Beast make use of the 3D effect? Games don't have to be designed with 3D in mind to look good in 3D.
Top 10 still not available
1. Castlevania Bloodlines
2. Contra hardcorps
3. Ranger X
4. Thunderforce 4
5. Ghouls n Ghosts
6. E Swat

Portableset.wordpress.com
I hope Konami listen.
Shining Force 1 & 2 vote here.
Can't believe we never got even Golden Axe1. My dream of seeing Golden Axe 3 : The Revenge of Death Adder (arcade) released on a console will prob never happen, and its proving hard to track down a 3 or 4 player cabinet (grew up on the 3 player). Multiple paths, tag team moves, and system 32 graphics. The best Golden Axe ever made...is forgotten. Alien Storm would be sweet in 3d. Moonwalker 3d arcade version would be insane too. I'm still in shock that we got Galaxy Force and Thunder Blade on a system owned by so many millenials (not meaning that in a derogatory way) and younger children. I almost believe M2 is making these for the love of the games, and not big profits. Hoping they keep this going if N releases another handheld.
I want Ristar along with Vectorman 1 & 2 released as 3-D classics please!
@Rez Yes! Give me a 3D Classics pack of Wonderboy, Wonderboy in Monster Land, Wonderboy III: The Dragon's Trap and Wonderboy in Monster World. Maybe even throw in Monster World IV.
Wonderboy in Monster Land was the first game I got for my Master System and remains, along with the even better Wonderboy III: The Dragon's Trap, one of my favourite games of all time.
I'd also take a 3D Classics version of the original Castle of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse although that has the obvious Disney complications.
Hey, I agree.
Edit: Although, I actually thought they meant Alien Storm, which I'd much rather see:

Some sections, like the arcade-gun-game store sections where you shoot up everything, would like awesome in layered stereoscopic 3D.
Edit 2: Yeah, and basically everything on your own list of games you'd like to see as 3D Classics, especially Golden Axe: Revenge of Death Adder
Would like Alien Soldier. Love this game. It has pure Platinum DNA with its parry system
The limited number of 3D classics will, for me, go down as one of the biggest missed opportunities of the 3DS generation. My understanding is that Nintendo did a few, but they turned out to be kind of difficult and resource-intensive, so they stopped pretty early on. I've been extremely pleased with Sega's efforts to pick up the slack and expose me to their back catalog that I missed the first time around. I was so pleased with Sega that I bought the Sega Classics collection even though I already had Sonic on its own.
I would have bought so many more classic titles on 3DS if they had been remastered in 3D. I understand one of the demos for the 3DS when it was first revealed at E3 was a 3D version of the original Legend of Zelda. I am eternally saddened by the fact that it never released and I will never get to play it.
@duffmmann I would also like to see Sonic 3 and Knuckles. The blue sphere stages would look amazing.
Would love to see Turbo Outrun, and hoping for a digital Release of Power Drift. Wish they would do the rest of Sega's Arcade games from the 80's and early 90's.
I also wish Atari would do a 3D version of the original Star Wars Arcade, but I am glad to have it on Rougue Squadron 3
Alien Syndrome was terrible. It's no classic.
I wish they would do ToeJam and Earl,Gynoug,Flashback,Roadrash, Thunder Force 4 to many to keep going so many great games
M.U.S.H.A
Wonder Boy would be an instant purchase for me. And while I know they'd have to get the licenses from Disney, Quackshot and World of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck would be amazing to play again in 3D.
Awesome news! Alien Syndrome, essentially a top-down Shinobi, would look great in 3D. Hopefully they're still planning on making 3D Classics Collections for all these ideas they have.
@Ralizah Any 3D Phantasy Star would definitely be awesome, but it's probably very unlikely. Considering the enormous amount of work M2 puts into just arcade-style games, they might spend years re-working even a single RPG. Would love to be wrong about this, though!
yes, yes, yes, and yes!
@Gauchorino Yeah, I'm not holding my breath, especially after that big M2 programmer died, but it'd be lovely regardless.
@Ralizah Definitely. That Akira Saito, the programmer who recently passed, almost single-handedly completed Power Drift over a few years' time doesn't seem to bode well for the future of the series, yet the fact that they're still testing and conceiving ideas for the series may mean they might actually put even more effort into it to surprise us greatly (for instance, 3D Shinobi III's development apparently immensely improved their development techniques for the series), so we'll see.
I'd be down for 3D Alien Syndrome. It's one of my favorite Sega classics from the mid-eighties. Most stages have below-the-floor and ceiling elements that would look good in 3D. It's a short game, unfortunately, with only 7 stages that loops back to the beginning. And there's no continuing, either. You'll have to memorize it as you go. I like it for the "Aliens" atmosphere, multiple weapon choices, and high score run potential.
At this rate I'll be six feet under before the games I want are if ever released.
It was already a 3D game on Wii.
While I'm glad we got power drift the thought of titles like alien syndrome, turbo outrun columns and golden ax in my 3ds makes my palms sweaty!! Cmon sega!! On my knees here!!
Shining force 2 please.
Oh, please let ESWAT: City Under Siege be considered!
I watched a video of Alien Syndrome recently and I must admit it wasn't quite as good as I remembered it as a kid, sinking quarter after quarter into the arcade. Unlike some of the other Sega Classics, I don't think Alien Syndrome has aged very well.
@AG_Awesome Soleil, Landstalker and other decent rpgs to please please please.
Yes! The gamegear version on 3DS please
People why don't make a petition to ask M2 and Sega more and more 3d Classics?!
@EllenJMiller golden Axe would be wonderful!
My secret dream though is Phantasy Star IV. In glorious 3D.
@earthboundlink What I really like that Sega did, was they said no to Genesis/Mega Drive VC games on the 3DS and instead still did release their best Genesis/Mega Drive games on the handheld, but at the same time for every single one, they put in the extra effort to make them 3D. Can you imagine if every NES/SNES/GB(C) VC title had 3D programmed in?! Now obviously I get why that didn't happen, it is resource intensive clearly to alter each title, the fact that Sega has released as many as they have really is quite impressive.
someone know how contact M2?
I'm still hoping they will surprise is with shining in the darkness. The way have done these 3d classics.......I think it could be the best of the bunch if they added in an auto mapping for the bottom screen
