The Pokémon Company has concluded its special Pokémon Direct, and in addition to announcing Pokémon Sun and Pokémon Moon, it had another announcement up its sleeve that we can enjoy very soon.
It's been confirmed that the Virtual Console releases of Pokémon Red / Blue / Yellow on 27th February will support Pokémon Bank, the subscription service that allows you to store your 'mon online. That means players will be able to bring their 'mon from the gen 1 games across to the new 3DS titles that are due in the Holiday season.
Are you pleased to see Pokémon Bank supported in these Virtual Console games? Let us know!

I wonder if they will allow transfer too ORAS. that would be pretty cool.
So storing Pokemon via a computer has become a reality.
I hope Sun/Moon will have a recreation of MissingNo. to support RBY's connection. I want to pet mine if G7 has both it and Pokémon-Amie.
Of course, it will probably just refuse to upload MissingNo. like it does with any hacked pokémon from G3-5.
Can't wait to see misingno in 3D!
I said once on the forum that it's far from impossible since they don't really have to touch the rom at all, just the save file and then add some kind of update to Pokémon Bank that recalculates IV/EV values which aren't actually that different from today's standards. I wasn't going to buy any 1st Gen VC games (already have Red & Blue on GB) but now I might have to buy Yellow just to transfer a Rattata that has Water Gun (I used to teach the TM from Mt. Moon to my Rattata when I was yound) since it's impossible to do that in any other generation.
EDIT: And to anyone who thinks they'll be able to send MissingNo to newer games. That ain't gonna happen. First of all, they won't allow you to transfer one and second of all, even if they did, they're not going to make a model for it (+ same stats, moveset and typing). I would like to see them making the bank think of MissingNo as a level 2 Rattata just to see people's comments once they try it out.
I think this announcement was the best news of the whole Direct. I mean the leak of Sun and Moon spoiled it a little, but I was on the fence about getting Red, Blue, or Yellow. The first thing I am going to do now is go and pick up Yellow.
How will this work exactly? I mean is this only from Gen 1 to Gen 7 (6?)??? Or can this be the other way around too if there's no move past Gen 1 on our Pokemon? I would like to transfer Mew on Gen 1 without using a glitch to get it. But I thought the calculation from Gen 1 & 2 were so different, that it was the reason why it was impossible for them to transfer to Gen 3. So now it's possible? What have changed? I don't get it, I need more clarification!
@Late yeah there were a lot of nifty moves in the old games that you couldn't teach later on.
I for one am excites since you could get every Pokemon in one game thanks to exploits and now I can store them in the cloud.
No Guard Fissure Machamp time!
I'll get yellow just for the starters. They are my favourite starter set ever, and Blastoise is my favourite pokemon along with Pikachu!
Not sure how this works. Pokemon in gen 1 had no abilities, no special split and no IV restriction. They could be insanely broken in the current gens
Woah, how'd you all Photoshop that time travel picture to make Kid Reggie demonstrate his body was ready even back then, while furiously playing a 3/DS?
Edit: Woops nvm, I saw the video, they found a Kid Reggie body double and filmed him for 1/2 a second.
so will we be able to go back to gen 1 after banking or?
Very unexpected and pleasing news! I wonder if we'll see more old gen games on the VC. They might not want to put Ruby and Saphirre up because of the remakes being on current gen hardware, but gold and silver would be easy money.
Don't forget that you can use this feature for an annual fee of $4.99 on top of what you already spent to buy the games.
Saw this coming a mile away, and yet it seems so right - basically, the other end of the six-second footage letdown. No wonder this reveal has been strategically shown AFTER the Sun/Moon one: they kind of knew they had to make up for the info drought, so they ended the Direct on a less sour note.
It's also heartwarming to see pre-Gen III games getting back in the game; all that's missing now is a rerelease for Gold, Silver and Crystal, and the family will be reunited once again.
I'm stoked. Way I see it, abilities and IVs will probably be generated once transferred to the banks, or maybe even gen 1 pokes will all get a hidden ability! Who knows? I'm excited
But I'm not excited to see No Guard Fissure Machamps in Gen 7 online battles. That's plain broken lol
I'm getting Yellow since they didn't even try to release a color version of R/B (which is completely possible since Wario Land 2 came in "color", opposite to its original cartridge which was a classic GB title compatible with GBC and SGB palettes). Seriously. What a lazy job.
@Drac_Mazoku I'm guessing the transfer will be one way only. If it went for both ways there would be a data loss when the Pokémon is transferred back from newer generation to older and you can't store the information anywhere. I'm guessing once you transfer a Pokémon from Red to Bank, the Pokémon will get a random Ability, recalculated stats, etc. but if you went and put it back to Gen 1 and wanted to transfer it back to Bank again, the Ability could be a different one.
Another thing to keep in mind is that Gen 1 - 3 needed cables to connect the games and trade. That means that the previous games need to have the same trade system as the newer one meaning that they could put restrictions to Gen 2 to make trading Gen 2 Pokémon or Pokémon with new moves to Gen 1 while Gen 1 games weren't modified at all. Gen 3 was on GBA which differs from GB/C so the same mechanism couldn't probably be done the same way. I don't think there are GBA games that can connect to GB games. DS and Gen 4 solved the problem by having a GBA slot in addition to DS card slot. You can't transfer Gen 3 Pokémon to Gen 4 either if you don't have a model which has the GBA slot.
I'm no expert. This is just speculation backed by a little bit of programming knowledge (two years).
The Pokemon site says "new Pokemon, region, and adventures" for Sun and Moon, so it is most likely Gen 7.
I hope they do something like in gen 2 where if you transfer your starter Pikachu from Yellow he can get you something exclusive in Sun and Moon since that was the only way to get a light ball in gen 2, but it needs to be something new since those are fairly common these days
@BaffleBlend Yeah, I hope it works as well but it probably won't.
Not sure why people are thinking missingNo will go... as missingno. Did those people even play the games? Did they actually see what happened when you caught it? Missingno would often break stuff like your hall of fame and then eventually just turn into a pokemon like Ryhorn when you saved and quit the game.
Surfing Pikachu.
This announcement trumps the new games for me! It means I won't only be downloading Pokemon Yellow , but all 3!
You and the Pokemon news... I suggest you change the website name from Nintendo Life to Pokemon Life..
@LethalCrayonz From pokemon.com: "Note that Pokémon cannot be moved directly from Pokémon Red, Pokémon Blue, and Pokémon Yellow to Pokémon Omega Ruby, Pokémon Alpha Sapphire, Pokémon X, or Pokémon Y via Pokémon Bank."
@DarkolitPL In Pokémon Stadium it appeared as an Kangiskhan doll
I'm not sure who really understands how big of a deal this is. If we get a Gold/Silver VC release that connects the entire chain of Pokemon games! That being said, I don't care that much, but that's really neat and I'm considering picking up yellow just a tad more.
@Manjushri Absolutely. As a recent example I nearly fell off my chair I was so ecstatic when I beat Lance in a heartgold nuzlocke. (That op son of a gun.)
@MasterWario not going to say never but other than leveraging more money from us there isn't any need to do Gold and Silver in a VC release as they did remake them for DS.
That being said I can see rereleasing all the GB, GBA and DS core games with bank support being a money spinner
I wish I could use the infinite item glitch to send myself items through pokemon bank.
@KilluaZoldyck how? pokemon cant carry items in pokemon red and blue, admittedly its been about TWENTY FREAKING YEARS (give or take 4 years) since I played pokemon red
I don't think the Bank allows you to send over held items anyways.
Dead serious. I hope that they make gen 2 transferable to gen 1 VC. And all for one major reason. Unlimited shiny ditto.
If you transferred the shiny Gyarados over to gen one and had a ditto transform into it (and caught it) you would have a shiny ditto when you transfer it. 100% chance
@abe_hikura Oh yeah I'm not saying they should, but I know a decent number of people who are obsessed with the originals and would love to be able to play silver/gold and transfer their Pokemons.
They also did the remakes for Red/Blue, and even though they are older GBA games you still can transfer those Pokemon to the newest games, so you still had an original game link prior to this VC release.
@KARNOVsSTACHE Yeah, it's also well explained on the Pokémon Bank page. I have a Complete Gen 6 Living Dex in my Poké Bank currently. I was kinda wishing to fill my Gen 1 Pokédex in 2 minutes (like you could when moving from X/Y to ORAS). I guess it won't happen, but it's easy to see why
Does this mean we'll be able to get Gen 1 Pokemon with moves they can't usually learn? If so, sweet!
Haha. I remember saying how awesome it would be if they integrated Poke'mon Bank into this... and y'all thought I was crazy
Then I have a new interrogation. Can you use the Poke Bank to transfer your mons between all Gen 1 game you have on your system? In other word, can you create a living dex for Gen 1, and move it between games (If I have let's say Blue and Yellow on the same system as the Poké Bank for exemple)?
I called this! This is awesome so gen 2 are the only games which aren't compatible with current games haha
Awesome news! First, there was confirmation of MissingNo. and they put in PokeBank support for R/B/Y which tripled the amount of money I was planning on spending tomorrow. Sun and Moon was announced to be a new region too? I'd bet it's based in China.
Obviously people didn't play the game and catch MissingNo back in the day if you think you'll catch it and put it in the PokeBank. It ruins parts of the game and then just turns into a Rhyhorn
I'll give Yellow a try, never played a Pokemon game. Is there any reason I should also pick up blue or red?
Does anyone know if the Mew glitch is still in the games?
@Manjushri look who's talking.
@rushiosan
Wario Land II had full-color GBC support. (some earlier carts didn't)
Poke'mon Red & Blue did not, and even on SGB it wasn't full color.
That's great that they're doing that. The direct was pretty lame though. All I wanted was to see the starters.
@Manjushri Maybe he found a shiny.
This is pretty smart and actually makes me consider getting blue now
@SuperiorTech Probably BUT wont be transferable, Pokémon Bank "knows" if any funny business has happened.
@cmk8 same here, I wasn't bothered with them before as I kinda saw them as pointless but now... will have to pick up Red and try to recreate my original play through.... ah the burden of knowledge!
With the Poke bank and PokeTransfer abilities, am I the only one that's itching for a new Pokémon stadium either on the wiiu or the NX would be nice.
I have a question Pokefans. I've only ever played Yellow, White and X. Last year I played through Leaf Green, with the intention of then going through Heart Gold and transferring all my pokemon into the new games eventually. Leaf Green would generally have had the same Pokemon as the Blue version we got in the West? So by playing through Red on the VC I could pick up the stuff I couldn't get in LG? Thanks!
@luigifan624 was some BS talk that the OTHER Pokken Tournament trademark "Pokken Fighters" was some Pokken/Stadium hybrid. Think we can all agree that, that is 99% bull poop!
Can anyone confirm whether or not you can trade with people on R/B/Y over the Internet or will it just be local wireless?
@twistedbee Local only (last I heard)
@Peach64 it will be the same no.1 to 150 mon yes but there was a lot of different details between the versions such as item holding and what moves each mon could actually learn. In terms of straight up collecting mon? no difference
@LordGeovanni Holy crap, I've never heard of that before! That's awesome! Will have to try it someday... The Rainbow Ditto Squad on Pokémon Stadium 2!
I would be more interested if I could transfer those Pokemon to X and AS, but since it is just limited to Sun/Moon, I can wait lol
@PlywoodStick
It takes a little bit of setup, but
http://pkmn.net/?action=content&page=viewpage&id=113
explains it I believe
I knew that there would probably be a small surprise thrown in! This is interesting news, particularly since I've been thinking about firing up my Pokemon Bank subscription again.
To think I was wondering if it would happen last year.
https://miiverse.nintendo.net/posts/AYMHAAACAAADVHkq4k4yxw
And now I can say I called it!
I'm guessing it probably won't work this way - but it would be cool if you could use pokemon bank to trade between two versions of the VC games on your 3DS. That would probably convince some people to buy all three VC versions so they could trade with themselves.
Pokemon Bank support is welcomed, but I'm still avoiding the Virtual Console Pokemon games until I can obtain a Mew in it without using glitches, such is the case in Japan.
@Manjushri Maybe after finding a shiny xD
Level 7 Mews.... DROOLS
@OneBagTravel Your two years late lol
Well, this will make competative battlers happy who miss having access to certain Gen 1 only TMs like Self Destruct (or Fissure on Poliwrath to then learn Mind Reader after transfer). I wonder how they'll do the IV conversion and decide the gender, ability, and nature of the Pokémon being transfered.
This still isn't enough to get me to buy it, though, considering I still have working copies of Yellow and LeafGreen. Now if they could give us access to a Surfing Pikachu to allow us access to that special minigame in Yellow, then I may bite.
@GoshDangTravino Maybe they will indeed give them the Hidden Ability to keep that from happening, as I agree that that's pretty broken.
@Drac_Mazoku I would assume not. They would still have to go through Pokémon Bank, which is technically moving back a generation.
Hmm, looking at Serebii it appears we do get access to the Surfing Pikachu minigame in Yellow (although not an option to actually teach Pikachu Surf in the main game). Should I get it? This is a tough decision.
In other news, there's no Restore Point available, which makes sense as it would remove most of the challenge of catching Pokémon (just throwing the same Ultra Ball over and over again) and even the battles themselves if we could just go back a turn or two whenever we get screwed over by a poorly timed critical hit. Interestingly, they've also made it a point in Yellow to recolor Jynx's sprite purple as is standard these days.
@Manjushri nah i think thats the face you pull while doing a ton of crack
not confirmed, pokemon bank cant find pokemon blue for use
i believe nintendo is fibbing on this part
@SuperGustafson9
The VC pokemon games won't work with pokemon bank until they release an update to it - probably around the time sun and moon come out.
This is perfect to get some pokemon so you can breed legit in Sun/Moon versions, for example tangela and others that are harder to get on XY/ORAS.
it would be interesting to see how this would work
