SEGA has been making a concerted effort to up its game in terms of localisation recently - in the Americas, at least - and is now adding to the collection of RPGs that have graced the 3DS. The snappily titled 7th Dragon III Code: VFD is heading to the region at retail this summer, with a price tag of $39.99/CA$54.99.
It sounds like a rather deep - and quirky - RPG that's set in 2100, with the usual 22nd Century challenges of working with a video game corporation to fight dragons that have invaded the Earth. To do this you travel through time - why not? - to three conveniently diverse locations; these are Atlantis, "futuristic capital of the land of Eden" and modern-day Tokyo. We'll just let a segment of the press release highlight some more details, including cat cafes.
- A deep party system and character customization options - All characters are completely customizable from the get-go. Players will be joined by two squad members in the field, and have up to nine characters in their party. With eight classes (such as Samurai, God Hand, Rune Knight, and more), 40 voice options, and 96 appearance options, gamers will have plenty of options to develop the perfect dragon hunting team.
- Base building with Nodens Enterprises HQ - Fighting dragons is tough work, but at least the team can recuperate at HQ where they can develop skills, collect side quests, and even go on dates. In addition, more floors such as a library, skylounge, and cat café can be added in order to improve HQ. Yes, you read that correctly, it says cat café.
- Lots of dragons! - Although there are a variety of enemies to fight, it would be wise to be prepared for the myriad dragons you'll face. It'll take careful planning and strategy to defeat these dragons, so choosing the right squad -- and right look -- is paramount!
It looks rather entertaining in the trailer and screenshots below - let us know if you're planning to give this a try on 3DS. Unless you're in Europe, in which case it's tough bananas.

Might give it a go
Have SEGA Europe already said they have no plans to publish this, or is it more of a matter of them not having confirmed a release, yet? If it's the former, that makes no sense - even a digital-only release over here would sway people, that's money on the table they're ignoring.
Awesome so many great rpgs coming this year!
yes!another good one!so many nice jrpg's on nintendo.i absolutly love it.
Another RPG added to the 3DS for 2016. I can't imagine a huge amount of hardware being pushed by these titles but software should see a decent lift and RPG fans have to be crazy excited.
Still waiting for phantasy star online 2.
CAT CAFE!!!! CAT GIRLS!!!! INSTA-BUY!!!!!!!!
Always wanted to play this and hope it comes to Europe. Would definitely buy it, even if it was digital-only.
Oh yes, this looks nice!!
Hopefully it'll come to Europe as well! Don't know where to find the time to play all the RPGs of 2016, let alone those on the backlog, but this seems quite interesting.
Looks a bit TOO Japanese for me. I'll be set for RPGs on 3DS with Bravely Second.
Can never have too many RPGs
This game looks epic! As long as it has a decent story, and likable characters I'll give it a go!
Looks like 3DS might have a good final year after all. Too many chibi RPGs, but at least there are RPGs.
So... Can you make custom dudes as well as girls? Also, I need a firm grasp of what the gameplay is like. But so far, I'm liking what I'm seeing very much.
No gameplay footage. How am I supposed to react?
@Jasonmd
And Phantasy Star Nova!
Tough bananas here.
@NESlover85
I don't have a vita but yeah, PS Nova too. I loved the original phantasy star online.
@Gerbwmu The best part is the are a ton more games likely to be announced or localized this year.
Yokai Watch 2
Pokemon Z
Shin Megami Tensei IV Final
Etrian Odyssey V
To name a few.
Looks pretty darn good if I do say so though I do think there are a little too many RPGs going for a Bravely Default type of art style. Still as long as the gameplay and story are up to snuff I can overlook that minor detail.
Say whaaat? Never expected this to come west. Especially since we didn't get the second game. Not for me though. Just surprised.
Looks cool. I'll get it for sure.
I'm surprised no one from Canada has chimed in on that ridiculous price yet. I know if I lived there I would be.
Anyways, the 3ds is going to go down as the best rpg system of all time. At least for me. There is no less then 20 quality rpgs and Atlus almost had that many as it is. Not sure how many of these I'll get this year but I do want them all at some point!
Not gonna lie - I wish there was something other than generic RPGs coming out this year. At least all you weeaboos are happy.
Yes to this!! I am so glad b/c this was one of the ones I thought would never get licensed as 7th Dragon DS wasn't. Canadian launch price is unacceptable and I certainly will not be paying that but I will buy it when it becomes reasonably priced, for sure. This looks like it'll turn the party for me. The thing is, after playing Lord of Magna for a while, I thought RPGs could use a bit more detail and exploration on the 3DS despite the limitations in power. If we can have games as gorgeous as Bravely Default and Fantasy Life, then the 3DS can certainly be powerful enough. Maybe you just have to be a first party or major third party developer to do it.
@Spoony_Tech 2016 is looking real good for RPG fans on 3ds. I know I'm very happy. For myself This actually might be close to the best year yet for 3ds. I would like sega to announce Phantasy Star Zero part 2 or 3D remake. Man that would just really make my year. I will probably pick this up but I might weigh in on that when the time comes. I have so many like this that I haven't touched yet. I really need to play Persona Q and a few others.
@Spoony_Tech I noticed the outrageous launch price for Canada and I will certainly wait for a price reduction or sale for this game. I would buy this at launch if it were 39.99 CAD but 54.99? Hell no.
Gotta admit that cat café mention has bumped this one way up on my list of potential purchases.
The 3ds almost has as many quality rpgs as the ds before it. I'm very happy to see this come over because I never thought it would get localized. Can't wait to play it. Also the trailer music sounds so GOOD!
@Rhydas Yes you can do guys and girls. No worries.
I didn't expect this to come over. Looking at the official site they've opened, seems like it's going to be Jap subs only

More RPG is good obviously, is it turn based though? It doesn't really look interesting enough to bother with if it's just an ARPG.
I am hoping that I will be able to get it at a reduced price around E3. Best Buy Canada and Amazon.ca had a deal worth 30% off pre-ordered games last year. Hopefully this will be one of the games I can get that discount for. I don't know why third party games are going up that high in price while Nintendo is charging $50 a game now. Damn Cdn dollar being in the dumps
This looks to be among the better looking portable DS RPG's imo, glad it's confirmed for NA (and ~soon)!
Sega once again looking to realize its western potential. Kudos to Sega for FINALLY figuring it out.
@Spoony_Tech It would be nice to know that the franchise was actually kicked off by Imageepoch, so it's nice to know they ended up continuing all but in name. The game was released in Japan last year a few months after Stella Glow, by Sega.
Now, if they'd just put the #FE team to something we actually want, like a new Radiant game or somewhere where we could perhaps survive a demon apocalypse...
@SMEXIZELDAMAN They didn't even need to reveal that to secure a buy. All they needed to do was to let me know Yuzo Koshiro was the composer and that there was a God Hand.
@Expa0 It's a dungeon crawler with turn-based battles and real-time exploration, if I remember correctly.
@AVahne DQ VIII isn't 3D, and it also doesn't support the stereoscopic 3D. 7th Dragon III: Code VFD is 3D and also dangerously close to crossing the line (I count 4-5 heads from top to bottom)
Really hope for a physical European release.
The C$54.99 price in Canada is surprising but considering that that's just under £30 (most of our 3DS games launch at £29.99 to £34.99 in the UK) it doesn't make me that outraged. But I can understand; they tended to be no more than C$49.99 and even that was considered premium pricing.
@TheWPCTraveler
Guess with the catgirls that means you have to buy two copies now, huh?
