Update:
This 18th March release is for both Europe and North America, which is excellent news.
Original Article:
It's the season for silly game delay rumours, and thankfully one can now be put to bed with a nice cup of cocoa. Pokkén Tournament is confirmed to be coming to Europe on 18th March, making it a welcome addition to the first quarter of the year on Wii U.
Nintendo of Europe has confirmed the news, though at the time of writing there's no equivalent date for North America.
It's been a fun week for fans following the fighting game, with announcements of new fighters in the roster and details on some of the included modes that we can expect.
We'll look out for a release date in North America, but in the meantime are you European Wii U owners excited by this news?

Let me say it in a Pokémon-related context: what-Pokémon-do-at-the-daycare YEAH!!
Welp, gotta go to the local GameStop on Monday and pre-order the game (for some reason, though, GS doesn't know Legend of Legacy and I've been really enjoying the demo but I'm getting off-topic). With that, it joins Uncharted 4 Libertia Edition and, I think, Roy, Ryu and Famicom ROB amiibos for stuff I'll get on my cousin's birthday and totally not giving her as a present.
That was sooner than expected. Sounds like we have two big games coming to the Wii U in March.
Great news for those who live in North America!

And now that Star Fox Zero delay... I hope not hehe!
im excited to try this out in March! can't wait
You mean to tell me there's going to be three big Wii U releases within a two-month period (Zelda TP HD, Pokken, Star Fox 0)? We're not going to know what to do with ourselves.
NA's March 18th release date was confirmed before Europe's. I don't how this article came to its conclusion that NA doesn't have a release date yet.
Now updated as this date is the same for NA, which is nice!
@abbyhitter Because I hadn't seen it yet.
What will happen after April?
Mario & Sonic... SMT X FE... Yooka Laylee... Zelda...
i await which kinds of fgc players will gravitate towards this. the controls look more like smash than tekken, even if developed by bandai namco. it's FAR more methodical a fighter than anything from the footage of the invitational tourney. i will get it, be terrible at it, and enjoy the hell out of it.
Yes! Now the hard things will be deciding between this and Hyrule Warriors Legends....grr...thanks for making it hard Nintendo! (Hopefully I'll actually have money left over after February, too!)
Is it March yet?
Is it just me or is almost all of the Wii U and 3DS announced lineup been scheduled for before the end of April (excluding Zelda U, M&S Olympics and that Fire Emblem U thing). Last year this amount of games stretched out until the Christmas period.
I think their clearing the decks for an announcement in May for the NX.
It's as if
I'm not buying it unless they make Dunsparce playable
Sweet worldwide release at the same time for everyone. Makes me happy. I'll get it when I can.
Woah! I never SAWK that coming!
Yesiree! I thought it had a release date already, but oh well. Now I know we have a release date!
@Freeon-Leon That's cute... here, have a Vanillite flavored ice cream cup!
I'm guessing we're not getting a direct for a month or so, they don't usually use socail media too announce dates unless there isnt a direct on the cards
Everything's coming out in March. My poor wallet...
Wasn't really excited about this before but now I think I'll get it because Wynaut? Might wait for sale though.
I was expecting May......could this mean Zelda Wii U is there big May game? If Star Fox Zero really does come out in April then maybe NX is arriving in late 2016. Seems like a jam packed early 2016, I guess we will wait and see what Directs and E3 brings for Wii U and 3DS releases in late 2016.
Has anyone or does anyone know someone who has played the arcade version? How is it — what's it like? I was initially disinterested but... I'm rather curious now.
@ThomasBW84 👌😉
Need to go pre-order on Amazon!
This is really awkward, would seem like maybe NX isn't 2016 as Nintendo would spread the games out more if it was so for example:
March - Twilight Princess HD
May - Star Fox Zero
July - Pokken Tournament
September - GIR#FE
November - Zelda U/NX
@Tsurii the only catch with the Mewtwo card is that it has to be in the 1st print of the game. It doesn't need to be preordered, just a copy with the 1st shipment. Though given how duplicate amiibo work with other games, for example Mario and Dr Mario or Link and Toon Link both functioning as "Mario" and "Link" respectively outside of Smash, it's likely that at least for now, the Shadow Mewtwo card will also function in Smash and Mario Maker (and most likely futuew games save Pokken sequels) like regular Mewtwo.
@Oubie @ThomasBW84
There's actually a rumor that Star Fox will be delayed to June/July according to a French ad. LOL
I give this game a month before it dies off.
Can't wait.
The next 2 month is going to be a hard wait.
cancels Japanese Preorder pulls up Amazon places American preorder
CANTWAITCANTWAITCANTWAIT
@Grumblevolcano except Pokken is confirmed for March . This actually looks like they're filling up until September to clear the fall/holiday slate for NX.
Wow, that's only 2 months and 3 days away. I'm impressed. And I even feel like this one won't even be delayed. Nice work Ntineod. Now keep hyping it up along w/ TP HD and SFZ, maybe sell a few more Wii U before the end.
@Gerbwmu I agree w/ May, but you got the year wrong, 2017. The game doens't even have a name yet, how can it be out in 4 months? And whenever it does get an official real date, it will be delayed once after that just like Starfox. So March 2017 will become May 2017. I may be wrong, but I'll be more right than you. jk
@Grumblevolcano "would seem like maybe NX isn't 2016"
I think by way of your own logic you mean "is", not isn't.
Oh, and the fact that Ntinedo announced this date means one less reason to have an ND.
@TwilightAngel Unless it was on the NX?
@Splatburst Yeah, that rumour (for my money) is silly, hence the slightly snide remark in the article. One random French retailer isn't enough to convince me, and for the record Nintendo of Europe's own game pages still say April for Star Fox Zero, while the NA release date is still the same on the likes of Amazon
@rjejr - I'm never wrong.....except for when I am.
I really don't believe LoZ Wii U will release in May, just shocked they are stacking basically 3 Wii U games on top of each other in March / April.
I do believe LoZ Wii U will be the November 2016 game and a full fledged reveal will take place at E3. I dont think NX will be released until Feb 2017 at earliest.....so again I'll be wrong!
It will be mine at launch!
i'm excited for this game and also yes! worldwide release! =)
@Gerbwmu You're probably right, based on what Kimishima revealed today.
Dang. I didn't see that coming!
Better go fill up my preorder balance!
@Gerbwmu I knew you weren't serious, but I couldn't resist.
@jariw "Kimishima revealed today"
I googled that phrase, and I all got was a quote from last Wednesday. Did sound like it will be 2017 though from what he said. Guess they'll bet the house on Zelda U holiday 2016.
http://www.christiantoday.com/article/nintendo.nx.news.development.for.console.is.steady.says.nintendo.president.tatsumi.kimishima/75743.htm
@rjejr http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1171046
@jariw So... a 2016 release date can still happen. We're still in the same position - we know nothing, and they're planning on releasing details. That source does nothing in that regard.
However it DOES confirm that Nintendo is working on licensing their IP for TV shows and anime. Kid Icarus anime please. Or maybe a Splatoon anime.
@IceClimbers I don't think it's likely. The article says that the NX is a completely different way of playing games than previous systems, but that details about NX will be revealed during 2016. If it indeed is a completely different way of playing games, don't you think they would want more time to than just a few months between announcement and release to market their new ideas?
The hype is real. This game is worth taking a break from Final Fantasy Explorers!
The hype is real. This game is worth taking a break from Final Fantasy Explorers!
@Vee_Flames You idiot. Vanillite is already a edited version of vanilla. Sawk isn't based on saw.
Earlier than expected but hey I'll take it before my birthday
@amiiboacid Looks like the joke completely went over your head. I don't even if understand the point of your comment, much less anything about it. @Freeon-Leon made a joke about the Pokémon Sawk by using its name as a replacement for "see" in his statement. Then I responded to him by saying I'd give him a vanilla flavored ice cream cup. But instead of saying "vanilla," I said "Vanillite" as a reference to a Pokemon's name; much like what Freeon-Leon was trying to do.
Honestly, I don't get the insult. Sheesh..
@rjejr I think it will release in May of this year. They said it might not release in 2015, so it almost could of been released then, but barely missed the deadline. Because of that, a 1.5 year dely, or even a 1 year delay is unlikely. A 6 month delay would be possible, especially considering it's Nintendo's biggest month and it's blank right now. Btw, the name is nearly the last thing to be created in a game.
@jariw Thank you.
@amiiboacid I agree May is a big month for Ntinedo, but for a big open world game like Zelda U they would want to show off locations and characters months in advance. And promote it for months in advance. Promoting TP HD, SFZ and PT means no more money let for advertising Zelda U until at least the holidays.
And, they didn't show it off at all at last years E3, so they will want to make a big deal out of it at this years E3, so it can't be out before then. i still think 2017, but I'd believe late 2016, I can't believe before E3.
@jariw No. The internet and people in general have short attention spans these days, so a reveal and release in the same calendar year is needed. 18 month "hype cycles" that Nintendo and other companies did in the past need to be dead and buried.
@Vee_Flames His joke was relevant to the article and Sawk wasn't intended to be a pun on see. Vanillite is clearly ment to be vanilla, and ice cream wasn't relevant to the topic. About the insult, I wasn't trying to be rude, but in this world, it's kill or BE killed.
@amiiboacid ... What? Whatever, dude. I'm done here.
@rjejr It will not release in 2017 what so ever.
Not sure whether I'll pre-order but might buy this at some point. Let's hope it's Pokken amazing
Honestly all of these dates are just kind of sneaking up on me. Im surprised it'll be so soon. 2 months basically will breeze by.
Of course I can't help but have Amiibo paranoia. Do I rush out and get the Mewtwo or Pikachu like I wanted, or wait and see if there will be a restock or a Pokken line? Good lord.
I have no interest in this game, but I'm glad it's releasing soon for everyone who wants it.
Hmm...if this has gamecube controller support, I'm down with it.
I'm just not excited for this. I like pokemon. I also like fighting games. I'm just not looking forward to this. Maybe once it's out, it'll be on a demo unit in a store and I'll discover that I like it.
This game isn't for me, I actually don't like any of the pokemon games at all. Just like I don't care for the smash bros series they are just to simple and easy compared to fighting games like mortal kombat, killer instinct, etc. So I guess I will just be picking up Twilight Princess HD that's the only game that I will purchase from nintendo out of the 3 wii u games announced so far. I might get star fox will be waiting for reviews on it.
Time to cancel my SF0 preorder in favor of this one!
Odd. I just preordered pokken, but the person I talked to wanted to know if I wanted it on 3DS... weird...
such a shame we'll have to wait all the way until SEPTEMBER eh
Keepo
@amiiboacid You sound almost as sure as these 2 guys did that both Zelda U and Starfox would release in 2015. "Yes" was the one guys exact words when Miamoto asked him if Zelda would be out in 2015. "Yes". Then Miyamoo said "No worries" when asked about Starfox being out in 2015. "StarfOx will arrive before the LEgend of Zelda NEXT YEAR".
No matter what anybody says, it isn't out until it's out.
You can skip ahead to the 3:10 mark.

I'm really happy to see it coming out early. I'll be able to play it with my friends in college before I head back for break. I'll hold off on Twilight Princess and pick this up!
Sold my Wii U last month and now I have to buy another. Hopefully the game is as fun as I want it to be!
@mowerdude It may be useful to know that this game is being developed by Bandai Namco, and is clearly based on Tekken. It's even called Pokémon Tekken in Germany. It's not based on Smash Bros.
@1nightinthepit Out of curiosity; You bought your Wii U when this game was announced, then you sold it, to buy another for the launch of this game.. That doesn't really make any sense..?
@1nightinthepit
Just give me Alakazam and I'm just as happy as an 14 year old girl at a one direction concert.
@TwilightAngel Screenshotted your comment so I can rub it in your face in 2 months.
It's funny, because this is the exact date I predicted around a month ago (Of course I had something to go off of) If you take a look at this tweet: https://twitter.com/NintendoNews/status/679857912345456640
Nintendo News mentioned the listing for the listing for the HORI Controller coming to the U.S. Now if you look at the replies, (My account is Scottie Orr). I took a look at the release date of the listing which was March 18th which is why I said on December 23rd "Releases March 18th, Hmm" Of course this was an easy prediction, but I'm glad I'm one of the few who noticed that
@TeeJay LOL! Rub what in? How the game is gonna be dead after a month of it's release?
@TwilightAngel Yes exactly! Turns out I was agreeing with you the whole time!
....You'd like that wouldn't you.
I'm curious: why do you think this game will be dead in 30 days?
@TeeJay What a twist!
The community and the content overall is what going to kill Pokken.
Cause i don't think this game is deep enough to have a full fledged community of players to keep it alive. Cause every fighter has it's casuals and pro's to keep the game from dying. I don't see this game having that And the content. Wow! There's basically nothing to do! No story. Nothing! Just 2 modes single battle and online.
But if the game survives more than a month after it's release. You can gladly make me hold that L and taunt me all you want. I'll give you that fam
I hope this game will be ace. I love the Tekken series, the gameplay is incredible so I have always had high-hopes for Pokkén. Like I said in another thread though, I just hope some more games modes will be announced.
Is there gonna be a special edition?
@ThomasBW84 I hope Nintendo passes this info on to Amazon soon, I received an email this morning saying my Pokken Tournament pre-order has been delayed until Jan 2, 2017.
Email follows:
Hello,
We have received new release date information related to your pre-ordered video game in the order you placed on January 15, 2016 (Order# 116-9583416-1461848). The release date for the video game listed below has been changed by the publisher, and we want to provide you with a new delivery estimate based on the new release date:
"Pokken Tournament - Wii U"
Estimated arrival date: January 02, 2017
We'll make every effort to get the delayed items to you as soon as possible. Any other items in this order will be shipped according to the delivery dates listed on Your Orders:
@rjejr Oh dear! I wouldn't sweat it, probably just an Amazon staffer getting an import of dates wrong and triggering the system, or something along those lines.
@ThomasBW84 I'm not overly worried, Amazon still says Dec 31, 2016 and Nintendo announced the March 18 date on Friday, it's even on their website:
http://www.nintendo.com/whatsnew/detail/pFnpetrL85ZpPoE98EkJM7cyqA1HM445
My only concern is the "limited ed" Shadow Mewtwo card, the reason my son really wanted to pre-order this. (He got the regular Mewtwo amiibo from his brother for his birthday last week.) Dont' evne kno wwhy it had to be a card, why nto just make a Shadow Mewtwo amiibo? ANywya, that would be my only concern, amiibo card stock issues, their track record is far from stellar.
I'll drop you a line when it gets straightened out. Or doesn't.
