I don't mind the amiibo locked content since I am getting the bundle.
@abbyhitter I think people are making too big a deal out of it honestly.
I'm surprised people are so into the yellow 2DS, because it's yellow. Usually I'm the only person on the planet considered the yellow hardware
I wish they would add downloadable DLC as a seperate option rather than having to buy amiibo all the time. I have 17 now and am running out of space to put them. I think amiibo are better than Skylanders but to be honest I'd rather not have disc locked content.
Don't make assumptions, maybe data can be written to the wolf link amiibo too... we don't know yet!
@FierceRagnar I would argue these things would not exist without amiibo. I remember needing a gba and cable to experience all of windwaker, having to have the ram expan pack to play majoras mask, the e-reader for extra Mario bro 3 levels and so on. You guys act like this is new. At least every amiibo works with multiple games
Part of the Nintendo tax. They don't discount their games like the others and they want a premiun for DLC too.
I don't like it as a consumer and lack of value is a big reason Sony/Microsoft are cleaning their clock in sales. It's also why I'm at least going to delay purchasing the NX at launch. A first since N64 (because I was a kid with no money.)
I guess we'll see if the others copy this model. My guess is no because they don't place so many characters in recurring games like Nintendo and their focus on mature titles takes away from the toy aspect of figurines. While Amiibo has been a sales success it's clearly not selling consoles and I feel it puts Nintendo at a competitive disadvantage on the market. But hey it's a pretty minor disadvantage compared to the dozens of other things they do wrong.
@faint
I guess I'm not uptodate on all the things Amiibo does. This is the first that really affects me and I don't like game content locked behind these. Characters fine. Whatever that whole smash watching games thing fine. This sux. Everybody got hardware overload with Rock Band/Guitar Hero. Now I'm supposed to have dozen of figurines stored somewhere accessible to access game content? It stinks. They should at least offer the DLC for $10 (which is the price of the bundled figurine) for those that don't want to clutter their house.
It's also very poor value. Most of the competitors offer hd rereleases for $40 for 2-3 games. Windwaker and Twighlight Princes should have been $40 for both on one disc. If they wanted to sell one for $50 there should be new content included. I mean you can buy Twighlight Princess for $20 and have the Wii U perform some upscaling now.
@Tsurii That 100% counts! Especially that unusual DSi.
@cleveland124 you do realize this amiibo also does something big in Zelda u as well right? As far as storage I picked up a cd rack for five bucks at a thrift store, took some shelves out, and painted it. I hung it up on my wall with a few nails and my amiibo live there. I don't understand the space argument. I live in a apartment and have plenty of wall space. It's like everyone lives in a box or something. You could also unlock the content then sell the amiibo if you realy need the space. It has value you know. You can't sell dlc
it's all perception. if the amiibo triggered a download instead of unlocked something already in the game, the perception is that you are getting something added instead of jsut gaining access to something already there. it's more convenient to have it in the game already, especially in a bundle including the amiibo, but it's still all about that perception.
@cleveland124 @FierceRagnar
I agree with @faint. You also gotta realise that you're not locked behind the content you paid for. The bundle that includes the amiibo costs 60 bucks which is the full price norm for a retail game. And you'll need the amiibo to link it to Zelda U.

It's not okay for others to lock on-disc content but it's okay if it's locked behind the servers ready to be downloaded. LOL

I honeslty don't like disc locked paid content or whatever, but them amiibos make for some sweet collectibles. The fact they unlock stuff leaves me in no position to complain.
Though I am sure I will find something to complain about in the future.
I don't really mind amiibos unlocking DLC. Though I think a more interesting idea would be you can have the amiibo unlock it, or you can pay $3-$5 to unlock it, but a single amiibo can unlock DLC in multiple games. I would be totally behind that idea.
@rjejr Thoughts?
@faint
Are you married? No way in... Well there is no way I get approved to hang these on the wall. The only real way they'd fit in with any decor is if it was strictly a game room anyway.
Also you have to take into the long term impact. Smash Bros has multiple Amiibos that don't really do much. What if the standard becomes owning 2-3 Amiibos per game to unlock. Over the next 10 years you could buy 100 of these. You going to hang 100 on the wall?
Alex suggests that additional content in an old Zelda game it welcome and I don't disagree, but he made no comment about this only being accessed via an expensive toys, other than it might be.
Disc-locked content is not always a bad idea and I guess it will be the future of gaming. But 'value for money' the gamer not being 'ripped off' and the promise of more content when you purchase the game and then content does not arrive, is all negative to gaming and gamers.
The additional content price has to be at least pro-rata (or less) to the amount of the original game content and not to the price of an over priced plastic toy that had no use to many adult gamers other than the content itself.
Zelda TP seems to be a rushed gap filler, to make up for the fact that no new Zelda is coming any time soon. No way can this take anywhere near the time and cost of making a brand new game so the cost should be priced accordingly. The price of the new dungeon will be between £10 and £15 as that is what the Amiibo's cost.
It would be interesting if Alex or one of the team could give us a breakdown of what the additional content price really is, by telling us what the cost of producing the Amiibos are, the profit Ninendo and the retailer receives from the toy, and why does buying the content depend quite often on the availability of these toys. Is creating a demand for the toy a marketing ploy to allow retailers to up the price. As happened to AC cards in the UK.
@faint
We'll see what it does in Zelda U I guess. People view value differently I guess. My other argument was you can buy this game for $20 now without additional dungeon so $50 for upscaling (not redone textures) and another $10 for another for a dungeon seems really steep to me and you haven't changed my mind.
@Pahvi
The perception is players want to pay for a "complete" game. The idea is the developer should focus on making the game the best they can make it and then work on paid DLC after the game has been released. Thus if their focus is 100% on the game until release their is no way paid DLC can be on the disc. If paid DLC is on the disc it feels like they were trying to find ways to break up the game into various paywalls rather than give a complete experience.
Now that leads back to value though which varies greatly between games. It is possible the game has a great amount of content and the DLC has great value too. Thats just not the impression that is left in a consumers mind when their is day 1 DLC whether on disc or on a server.
I think a big thing people are missing I'd that Nintendo came out and said the Zelda fighter Amiibo works be supported in the game. People also might forget people were screaming over the lack of a skull kid Amiibo figure with Majora's Mask 3D. If I remember correctly Anouma wanted to add in Amiibo functionality to MM3D, bit couldn't think of a way to do it. This is another case of d if you do and d if you don't.
@FierceRagnar - You sound like a paid spokesperson for the Amiibo hater's lobby...
You don't have to like them, but please at least be honest about them.
@cleveland124 no butt Sarah and I have been together for five years. It's a shame you and your wife can't work something out where your hobbys may be concerend.
@faint
You shouldn't assume that my love story is worse than yours because my wife doesn't enjoy gaming as much as I do. Trust me we get along fine.
The reality is as we've expanded our family and my kids have grown hobbies gaming has taken a lesser role in my life. And I'd much rather have pictures of them up or some of their art than Amiibos.
@cleveland124 I didn't assume anything. You asked if I had a wife. This implys that it was part of the issue.
@cleveland124 if it has taken a lesser role then maybe you shouldn't be worried about a dungeon. At least not to the point of complaining on forums
@faint
You very specifically stated that its sad me and my wife didn't have what you had despite only knowing my wife would not like amiibos hanging on the wall. You literally knew nothing else about her. She could have loved gaming and not amiibos. Go ahead and act like you are better than me. I think what you said is highly offensive and you should appologize. But based on your snappiness you won't.
@faint
It's not my only hobby sue me. I guess your opinions are more valid than mine because you only game.
If Sarah didn't enjoy gaming but was otherwise exactly the same would you be with her? I can only hope you reach a point where gaming is not your top priority and people on a forumn tell you that makes your opinions invalid.
I think amiibos on a wall are tacky and I wouldn't want it. If it works for you great.
@cleveland124 I have more than one hobby as well. She may game but has many hobbies I do not. When it comes to hobbies and expenses we compromise. In the end we both get what we want tho I did tell her no more cats once we hit five.
The only reason anybody should care about tackyness in their own home is the opinion of visitor. I realy don't care what anybody thinks is tacky. I like what it like. My shelf looks pretty nice now that it's painted. I used a shade of avocado to match my couch.
@cleveland124 I also never stated that gaming was my top priority. I decided not to have children for my own reasons. This does not mean I am without other responsibilitys.
@cleveland124 it's sad you can't compromise. I said this because the first thing you asked was do I have a wife. That makes it sound as if it would be a reason I could not do certain things or live a particular way
@faint Unfortunately, all amiibos do not work with multiple games. Just recently picked up the Splatoon 3-pack. These work exclusively with Splatoon. When I see that they have released Splatoon costumes as paid DLC for Sm4sh, it makes me wonder "Why wouldn't my amiibos unlock that, just like Fox, Samus, etc. unlock costumes in MK8?" Sort of a lack of consistency there. If they were well-implemented in many games and acted as a sort or "cameo pass" that injected that character into the game or similar, that could make them more versatile. More likely we'll see the Kirby / Hyrule Warriors formulation where devs give you generic "extra loot" for most amiibo and something special with the amiibo that matches the game. And it terms of what the Splatton amiibo actually DO unlock, while I enjoy the challenge stages and am especially looking forward to the exclusive gear, I can't help but feel that I've bought a bit of the game that not everyone else has access to, which might put me at an unfair advantage. I certainly would not want amiibo to become a rare, expensive, commodotized version of pay-to-win.
I feel the same way about my Shovel Knight amiibo — I LOVE that it gives me couch co-op, but fear that there is a wonderful experience there that everyone should be able to at least purchase digitally, and not have to rely on the availability of a plastic figurine.
Oh here's a chart for anyone wondering which amiibos do what:
http://www.nintendo.com/amiibo/compatibility
One of the coolest things that I have seen since amiibo come out is all the custom figurines people are creating. Some are a new layer of paint while others completely change the design / molding of the amiibo. I;m not sure if Nintendo predicted this, but it's great that there is a community springing up around this. It also gives etsy artists a way to enjoy their hobby as well as afford it. Buy amiibo, unlock the content in your game, then paint the figurine and resell it!
Also, I wonder: are people sharing amiibo? I have certainly thought of shipping mine to a distant friend's house for a "visit" for those that just unlock content.
@Dark_Omen1110 well the splatoon amiibo work with Mario maker. Nintendo isn't handling the shovel knight amiibo yacht club is. It's the only one they are producing so they are going to keep pumping them out. You might have to wait a week but they will always be relatively easy to get
@Dark_Omen1110 I do agree that amiibo could do more but look at all the complaining. It's a damed if you do damed if you don't thing
@faint
Would you only clean a house for visitors? Cleaning and having good feng shui is great. It makes a house much more comfortable when you come from a long work day.
I'm less concerned about what a shelf looks like and more concerned it doesn't match anything in my house. It's like here's a wedding picture, here's my kids, here's a Ganondorf figurine. It seems the only reason to do that would be if I felt compelled to have a figurine on my wall and I don't.
@faint
How about you stop pretending like you know me and about my relationships? Obviously I compromise or I wouldn't have been married for more than twice as long as your current relationship. If you must know that is part of our compromise. I don't really care what things look like and she does so I give her free fesign reign in our house. I don't really care that you don't want kids. If you want people to know make a blog entry about it. Now seriously stfu about my personal life.
@cleveland124 How is tacky and dirty the same thing? I clean so my house isn't gross. I would even if no one ever came over
@cleveland124 why did you ask if I had a wife? Can you answer that? I'm just responding to your posts.
@cleveland124 A great point. I think Amiibo are fun but I've long since passed my toy-collecting phase. I have no problem having a couple (if I could get the ones I want) but they will be tucked away and not displayed. I am a gamer and will always be but models don't fit my decor. When I have kids and/or a game room then huzzah! So there should be an alternate option for sure. I would get wolf link for this one but as a general rule I don't want an Amiibo per game - then again with the current release schedule that shouldn't be a problem. 😄
@faint
In general woman care more about keeping things neat and tidy. I thought it was a safe comment. If it bothered you, you should have said something instead of attacking me personally.
@cleveland124 remember this whole conversation started which the where would I put it argument. I mearly stated that unless you live in a box you have space and gave a personal example. Maybe your argument should be I don't want to go through the trouble of buying them. No argument there. That can be a pain.
@faint
Assuming you don't eat on the floor 90% of cleaning is putting things in their rightful spot.
@faint
Well then you said your point and there was nothing else for you to add. Especially no reason to attack me personally because I disagree with you.
@cleveland124 it didn't bother me I was just responding. I doubt I would get married unless I had kids ( for tax and insurance reasons) but we do live as a married coulpe. She likes what she likes and I like what I like. We share commen ground. If I misunderstood you post I apologize. I was mearly responding to what I thought you were trying to say.

@cleveland124 I don't feel as if I was attacking anybody. Maybe Internet culture is making you assume that. I was just trying to have a logical disscusion with you.
@cleveland124 are you saying that having a shelf is not a rightfull place or that tacky means no rightful place?
@faint
I'm wasn't saying anything about the shelf. I'm saying you get things out and they end up on a table or the floor and "cleaning up" to me is mainly putting these things back.
@faint
You said I was uncompromising and didn't have a good relationship like you. I told you I didn't want you to talk about me like you knew me and you continued to do so. I don't know why you think I wouldn't find that offensive.
@cleveland124 I always put them back when I'm done with them. That's part of why I got a shelf. It seemed like a good idea once I hit five of them. I have quite a few more now tho.
@cleveland124 I never said your relationship was bad. You asked if I had a wife implying that if I did I would t be able to display them. When it comes to thing one of us wants that the other doesn't we compromise. It's that simple. People can love each other and be bad at compromising together. My mom is a great example of that. I do think it's sad when people can't compromise. That's part of the reason my country USA is at war with half the world.
@faint
In a compromise somebody doesnt get what they want. If I put amiibos in a wall and she doesnt like it but allows it thats a compromise. If I want to put them up but don't because she doesnt want them thats a compromise.
If your GF doesnt care if you put them up and you do thats not a compromise. If you and your GF always get what you want that is in fact not compromising.
In an abusive relationship one side dominates the other side. Were you implying my wife is abusive because she wouldnt want me to hang amiibos?
@cleveland124 a co praise is when both people bend for an agreement. You want to put it up but she thinks it will look tacky. You ask if she would like tho choose what all it on and if she would like to help design it so it looks good. She agrees and that's a compromise.
@cleveland124 don't put words in my mouth. Sounds like your trying to pick a fight with me. It won't work. I'm too nice.
@faint
In an ideal world there would be a way to make everybody happy but it usually doesn't work that way. The obvious downsides are your game system is where it is. If her plan removes the shelf from the room that your system is in why put it on a shelf? Why not leave it in a more accessible drawer? The key for me would be amiibo access not displayability. Thus your compromise would leave us both unhappy. It wouldnt be useful for me and it would still be an eyesore for her.
@faint
Obviously you're not that nice as I told you I was offended by your personal attacks and would like an apology. So you play the whole everybody on the internet is offended card instead of apologizing. Our society doesnt really know how to apologize anymore unfortunately. They know how to be asses though.
@cleveland124 well why would it be difficult to use a drawer? That's where I keep my wiimotes and GameCube controller. If I want them I open it and put them up when I'm done.
@faint
Using a drawer is what happens. You went off on a sidebar on compromise. I dont really know why.
@cleveland124 another question. Is there anything she has on the wall or in the room that you consider an eyesore?
@faint
Still on the compromise thing? No in general I like the way our house is designed. I said before that I think the amiibos would be an eyesore so I in no way push to have them on the walls.
@cleveland124 well if both of you think it's an eyesore then no compromise needs to be made.
@faint
Yeay! We agree on one thing.
@cleveland124 you can get the ones you want and put them in a box or something and pull them out when you want. When your done with that Zelda amiibo or whatever and you don't need it anymore you can sell it or give it to you kids. Sounds good to me
@faint
Thanks. With your blessing I will buy what I want and use as I see fit. Does that include Microsoft and Sony products as well?
@cleveland124 we also both keep a clean house. That makes at least 2
@cleveland124 a solute ly. You should buy what you want. I have an Xbox one myself. I can't wait for scalebound!!!
@Action51 Telling someone else to be honest when you twist facts yourself is ironic, isn't it?
@greengecko007 which fact is he twisting? I own 32 amiibos and what he says is pretty accurate
@faint How about these supposedly "many" games in which the amiibo simply unlocks content that can alternatively be unlocked by playing the game and completing certain objectives? That's certainly not the case for any of the games I have that support amiibo. Mario Maker is the only game I know of that does this, and last I checked, one game does not quantify as "many".
@greengecko007 well pokken , animal crossing happy home designer are two more. Let me think on it a bit and I'll give you a few more examples.
@greengecko007 xenoblade chronicles 3d. Not sure about the costumes in wooly world. I don't own that one.
Historically Nintendo have always been the most generous in terms of content and replay value in their games. DLC isn't necessarily a bad thing, so long as it isn't an inherent part of the story that players have to fork out extra for. Nowadays the games industry thrives on releasing a thin campaign and some MP options, only to release the same amount of content again as DLC. At least the Amiibo itself has some inherent value, unlike a €20 invoice for MP maps.
As for it being in the game and unlockable as opposed to add-on - I think people are making a big deal out of it. The end product is the same. At least with Nintendo's original titles, you're generally getting better value than multi-platform releases.
well the way i see this dungeon thing is, that it wasn't in the original game and nintendo has no incentive to just add it in and could just had gave us a remaster as it is.
so the extra dungeon is completely justified with the amiibo in this case
