It's a fairly well known fact that Monster Hunter is a pretty big deal over in Japan. While it certainly has a large fanbase here in the west, the Japanese audience is where this series really pulls the numbers. Perhaps this is due to the larger install base or maybe it's just something about the culture of Japanese life, but obviously something about the series really resonates with gamers over there. Nowhere is this more evident than the latest release, Monster Hunter X, which has been a huge success even by the series' standard.
Capcom recently put out a press release where it was announced that Monster Hunter X has shipped two million units, including download cards and eShop sales. To put that in perspective, Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate just passed four million global sales at the end of October; meaning that Monster Hunter X has managed to sell half as many units in just six days in one region. Considering that the series has been starting to gain traction in the west, we've just got to keep our fingers crossed that Capcom chooses to localise this one, too.
What do you think? Are you surprised at how fast this has been selling? Would you be interested in Monster Hunter X if it was brought to the west? Share your thoughts in the comments below.

I plan on getting it if it comes over too the US. I had alot of fun with MH4U.
There is no better gamer than a hunter.
@lifepsychedelic
Same. I'll start on X when it comes here.
I played the demos for 3 Ultimate, 4 Ultimate and X. Capcom seems to know how to sell the same game at least three times.
We'll see how it goes. Sooner or later, the next Monster Hunter game won't reach Capcom's expectations and they will just end it. I'd say that this is sheer luck that the game sold about two million and on Nintendo even...something that you don't see many third parties supporting because of the obsession with graphics and power.
I would play more of the series if it was back on Wii U or home console. I barely play my 3DS nowadays.
@Tsurii Nope....not even the slightest. But I still stand my point of it being lucky that it sold well enough.
@Artwark hahaha are you kidding me? Every mainline monster hunter that's has been on a portable has sold multiple millions in Japan all the way back to the psp. Japan has already had multiple mh installments on the 3ds. Everyone has sold multiple millions. Monster Hunter has kept capcom alive this gen
I have MH3 and didn't really get into it with my old 3DS - but I also never had a Circle Pad Pro, which I understand made a huge difference. I'm actually planning to play it again now that I have an N3DS XL, as soon as I'm finished playing EOU2.
@Artwark I tell ya what. Every Wednesday this site posts the Japanese sales charts. Monster Hunter has been out for three days now. How about you count the number of weeks it takes to drop below the number one slot.
It was Luck that MH sold so well? Who is this guy? LMAO
MH has pretty much taken up all my gaming time. I still buy games, play them for a little bit, but with monster hunter i can spend hours and hours everyday with no regrets. Once you get into it and learn just how deep and addicitve it is, there's really nothing like it out there.
@Artwark If it wasn't for Monster Hunter 4, Capcom would be bankrupt right now. That game saved them. The series is what's allowing them to keep moving forward.
@IceClimbers In other words: Nintendo saved them.
Nintendo should buy Capcom.
Anyways, awesome game. Not really a fan of the franchise (Still own every game, just to support them) but I think, MHX will be the first "good" game for ME! Seems quite a bit diffrent when it comes to the combat style. I like it.
I hope nintendo will buy the franchise, or capcom altogether.
We need more monster hunter goodness and boy, are they selling it. I'm a huge fan as well, the first one to grace the new nintendo systems I'll buy in a heartbeat.
@Artwark The best-selling hunter game series after MonHun is God Eater.
Despite it selling just a fraction of what MonHun sells, it still manages to break 250k with each mainline entry.
I'd respect Monster Hunter if I were you. Or anything with a "Monster" in it in Japan, really...
I would have got it if it was on the WiiU, but sadly they failed and only put it on 3DS, even after many of us bought MH3U for both 3ds and wiiu proving that we would purchase 2 times just to have this luxury.
Sadness. I hope nintendo does better with the NX cause the WiiU just got left behind with so many great games skipping it. ><
Not surprised at all. I think A LOT of Westerners imported the game as well. I believe there will be some sort of MHX release for the rest of the world maybe awhile though. I'm debating on importing it would be a no brainer for me if I already owned a Japanese 3DS.
The Monster Hunter series has officially sold better on 3ds than on psp. Impressive.
@Tsurii lol I guess so. Button mashing didn't work for any of the demos, so that's good
@manu0 Yeah it's not a fighting game, so that won't work. It's a bit like Dark Souls where you have to find openings to attack and learn the enemy's movement cues.
Kind of hoping for a Cross Ultimate because while Cross does have a lot of content, I'd like to see it expanded further with a G rank.
@Tsurii What about Pokemon? That too sells.
Also, I'm positive that Capcom would just make Monster Hunter go mobile and it will all end there for the worst.
Good to see games selling well on Nintendo hardware. Hope it releases in the UK.
.....Okay, now release it in the rest of the world; or at least announce a release date.
MHU4 is my favorite 3DS game! I just switched from playing MHU4 to playing Xenoblade and I'm always trying to do stuff in the game that I would do in MHU4.
Day one, baby!
@manu0 I have absolutely loved MH3U (which I own for 3DS and Wii U) and MH4U, but you're right that nobody in the industry has mastered the art of reselling the same game over and over again like Capcom. I first learned this in the 90s when Street Fighter II basically became its own series.
Street Fighter II: Awesome Fighting Game!
Street Fighter II Championship Edition: You can play as the bosses! There are some new colors of the characters!
Street Fighter II Turbo: It's a little faster!
Super Street Fighter II: There are 4 new characters and (I think) an official combo system!
If There is a Monster Hunter X Ultimate, it will be very much in this vein: a release of Monster Hunter 4 with expanded "Ultimate" content and some new skills added. And you know what? I will buy it and play it for hundreds of hours, because the underlying formula is just that good. Capcom knows how to roll with what's working and turn one game into its own sub-series.
Monster Hunter, Pokemon, Yo-kai Watch, Japan really loves Monsters and spirits.
Monster Hunter is an excellent game, the gameplay is very addicting. That said, the game requires a lot of dedication. I enjoy the time I played MH3U and MH4U, but damn, after 50 and 100 hours into the game respectively, I haven't even got close to the ending. And by the time I want to continue MH4U, MHX might have come and suck me another 100 hours and still far away from beating the game.
How long must we wait ~
Not a surprise. MH sells like hotcakes over there.
No wonder I'm hoping Cross comes over, because I've sunk 1000 hours into 4U...
