Chrono Trigger is one of the most beloved RPGs of all time, but aside from DS and smartphone re-releases, Square Enix has been curiously reluctant to leverage the popularity of the game.
The prospect of a totally remastered edition of the time-travelling fantasy epic will have most fans drooling with anticipation, and while that might not be happening officially, this fan-made reproduction of the game's Millennial Fair gives a tantalising taste of what could be.
Constructed entirely from scratch by Michael Barrington - even the textures were hand painted using Photoshop and 3D Coat - it's quite a stunning spectacle, and makes us yearn for an official reboot of the 16-bit classic.
Here's the scene in the original game (skip to the 3:15 mark):
Here's the updated version:

The original pixel art is so gorgeous this is one game that I don't think needs a remake. Would be cooo to have a sequel though!
That video is quite in keeping with the style of the original.
Articles like this always get us hyped until we remember that no one is going to remake a game in Unreal Engine... but then again, Square-Enix themselves are going to give Final Fantasy VII an HD coat of paint, so it's safe to not rule anything out at this point.
Have been hoping it would come to the Wii U VC, but might just give in and get all the Square goodies on the Wii mode instead - a minor thing, but it bugs me not storing these games in the same folders as my categorised Wii U VC games.
A 3D Chrono Trigger from Square-Enix would be a dream come true!
@GLA
Same here... I've been waiting for Square to release their games on the WII U VC, but the wait is killing me!
@mookysam There is a sequel: Chrono Cross!
I've been playing Dragon Quest Heroes lately and all I can think about is how awesome Chrono Trigger will look remade. Still one of my favorite games ever.
Chrono Trigger DS is on sale at Square Enix Online Store for...
Wait for it...
Just $6.
Thing is, the $8 shipping means you'd need to order a few items to make it worthwhile. Fortunately they have around 100 games for extremely appealing prices. Kingdoms Hearts Dream Drop Distance for $12. The KH games on DS for around same price. FF 13-1 and 13-2 and 13-3 for $6/ea. SO many good deals on PS4/X1 games too.
I recommend people check it out. Just go to their online store and browse the sale tab.
GIVE ME IT NOOOOOOW!
@AlexSora89 Well the PS4 version of Dragon Quest XI that was shown is being created in Unreal Engine 4 so it's not too far a stretch!
What I would give for a Chrono Trigger in HD for the Nintendo NX.
That's lovely. He should team up with some of the people that have been recreating the characters from the game in 3D, and get the fair grounds populated.
I think the pixel art is great and is truly iconic of the game, so I don't think a 3D remake is necessary but it would be nice.
Nope I don't like it.
"This Is What An All-3D Version Of Chrono Trigger Could Look Like"... You mean like Chrono Resurrection that was shut down by Squeenix over 10 years ago:

@mookysam can't view the video right now but with titles like this and secret of Mana 1 & 2 I'd love to see the original character sketches adapted into high resolution sprites in an updated version of the engine where any super Nintendo sprite effects used for magic etc can be replaced with stylised ones like how wind wakers swirls and puffs of smoke were added to the Link to the Past graphic set for Zelda four swords.
It looked okay but there really wasn't much to this. Chrono Trigger doesn't need a remake anyway, it's been ported so many times it's ridiculous. Awesome classic though.
There should have been a warning at the end of the article to alert the weak-hearted among us that the video from the 16-bit version of the game contains foul language due to the person recording it being extremely infantile...
@WarlockNem So many times? It's only available on 4 platforms really: Super NES, PlayStation, Nintendo DS, and mobile. A 3D remake would be great; however, I want the original team to remake it, not the fans. They usually tend to ruin things from the original so I don't want them to ruin this.
Wow, this is impressive work. Nice job, Michael Barrington.
I would love a 3d remake. But it'll probably never happen.
@John_Enigma
I think my head would explode if that happened. Sadly, it never will.
While it's true that Square Enix has been giving this series the shaft for 15 years, to be fair, they need to use their time and resources to make 10 more Final Fantasy games--there's not nearly enough of them yet. >_>
@GLA You might as well. You can always update them if they ever do come to the Wii U VC.
That's gorgeous.
They've managed to create a 3D version of the game that actually retains the lovely cartoony/painterly like colour and style of the original, rather than going all "gritty" and "realistic" and adding in fugly shaders everywhere.
This is how to translate great 2D pixel art into 3D.
The only thing I think needs a little work is the leaves on the trees and the clumps of grass—maybe a little more geometry or higher contrast textures, or something.
Looks like Mikey B just got himself a nice little feature for his showreel. This will surely help him to get his foot in the door to secure work as a 3D artist.
Beautiful.
Beautiful indeed!
