Super Smash Bros. on Wii U and 3DS can't be accused of playing it safe and predictable, with Sakurai-san and his team utilising the lucrative money-making of DLC to go a bit nuts with its new character additions. We've already had Ryu, yet the recent announcement of Final Fantasy's Cloud was on a whole new scale of the unexpected. We doubt many predicted that, even if plenty had wished for it.
Nintendo of Europe sees the hype, anyway, and has shared some nice screens of the fighter in action. Cast your eyeballs over them below, with one showing off the accompanying Midgar stage.

We'll no doubt get a release date for Cloud and some other tasty details in December's Smash Bros. Direct / Special Presentation. That'll be a broadcast to savour.

I still can't believe Cloud got in.
This threw me off completely when the Direct ending and I love the irony of Nintendo getting a HD playable Cloud Strife before Sony and Microsoft. I'm hoping a cheeky Knuckles from Sonic or Dixie Kong my Smash Bros Ballot picks are next (probs not tho)
Cloud isn't an Ike clone so don't even use that excuse. Cloud also wasn't the ballet winner, that will be most likely announced next month.. Actually one will 99%(like Fi says, nothing is 100%) be announced next month. I hate to see people complain over the web about it. In due time my friends.. In due time
I want a moogle costume...
First smash dlc i would actually buy
Before the Direct I had tried to convince myself to stop buying DLC, as the prices do stack up, but dammit, I need Cloud.
I'm glad about the welcome the character received among the fans, although it didn't mean much to me on a personal level as I've never played FFVII. I'm looking forward to trying out the character, though, and particularly excited about whatever they'll announce next month. Hoping for brand new characters to be revealed rather than veterans.
I can see in december direct Nintendo saying you remember cloud from the last direct ? He's no available on eShop right now with the chocobo and maybe moogle mii costumes in a package.
I just hope the music tracks they use for the Midgar stage are Let The Battles Begin, Fight On, Main Theme of Final Fantasy VII, J-E-N-O-V-A, One Winged Angel and idk Gold Saucer???
Wait, so is Cloud's stage just Battlefield, AGAIN? With all the disappointment over Omega stages, I figured Nintendo would have learned we want NEW stages, not more reskins of Final Destination and Battlefield. Where's a creativity they had in Melee, 64, or even Brawl?
I just hope the AC versions of JENOVA and One Winged Angel come with the stage.
@bro2dragons Did you watch the trailer? Summon materia float around, and can cause the stage to split in half, flood, have electrified platforms, pillars of fire engulf one ledge, or a giant beam sweep one side of the stage, depending on the summon.
@Zoda_Fett Sakurai tweeted that he put Cloud in to fulfill a "difficult request"; most likely, the Smash Ballot.
I'm honestly expecting that Cloud will be released the day of the direct. I also think they'll reveal at least one ballot fighter. And I'm hoping they'll unveil Roy's amiibo!
Well, I've never played a single Final Fantasy game so I have no idea who this guy is. The good part of that is I can save my money if my Smash Ballot Vote (K. Rool) get's included as DLC.
I haven't really played a Final Fantasy game before, but I'm still excited to see Cloud join the roster! Seriously, he's a gaming icon!
@CrazedCavalier TECHNICALLY it could very well be a request from Square Enix. I kinda have my doubts that Cloud was a ballot winner, since I haven't really come across many people voting for him. Sakurai said the characters would be fan-service, so why would he choose a character that barely had any presence in the ballot like Cloud as opposed to someone who's highly requested?
I seriously hope Banjo-Kazooie is next.
@bro2dragons Blame the super competitive fans who only like those stages, and complained about everything else. The stage hazards in this one more than make up for the plain layout.
If Cloud can then Banjo Kazooie can. Heck, if freaking Cloud can then ANYONE CAN
@CrazedCavalier hm? I've seen the tweet but I don't think it was the Smash Ballot. If you think about it he would've just up'd and said it. I think it was maybe Square Enix, considering the upcoming games coming out for them. Of course they don't need advertisement but I dunno, it's possibly. I just expect him to say "Most requested" or something along those lines before presenting the character. I feel as if cloud was something thrown out there by someone higher up and that twisted Sakurai's gears. But you could be right.
Can't wait to have a match or Megaman vs Sonic vs Ryu vs Cloud Vs Pacman Vs MewTwo vs Mario vs Samus. All the best of gaming in one match
Cloud as a character seems too fully formed to have been a ballot choice. It takes between 6 months to a year to develop a fighter, the man himself has said so.
With this in mind that means that if Cloud is released in December, the earliest he could have been in development would have been since early May. I don't think Sakurai would have consented to begin character development while the ballot was still live, thus not taking into account the choices of many undecided fans (though I do admit that anyone who cares about Smash probably had voted by that time).
The difficult request might have something do to with burgeoning relations with Square Enix, which might also be the reason from DQ 7 & 8 coming to the West plus some unnamed projects between them and Nintendo. In exchange, Square Enix gets Cloud put in Smash, possibly to raise the profile of the character among the Big N userbase. For what? Your guess is as good as mine.
I wonder when they will announce the date of the smash direct
I'd love to play FF7 sometime. Does anyone have a recommendation for which port? Should I play it on Steam or get it on PSN? BTW, if One-Winged Angel isn't on Midgar, I will LOSE it.
@WaddleDeeWeegee They somehow left out Guile's Theme for Ryu's level. I'm bracing myself for the expectation that One-Winged Angel will get the same treatment.
Well, we'll have to see it Final Fantasy gets one thing that Street Fighter got: An extra trophy. Id love to see a Sephiroth trophy, and hey, that might mean something. I mean, Ken got a trophy.
LINK VS. CLOUD DEATH BATTLE!!!!!!!
Really hoping this opens the door for Geno of Mario RPG
Amazing. If you haven't played FFVII you owe it to yourself. If you like retro I recommend PSN but if not you can wait for the remake. Here's hoping it's on NX too!
Next Okami, Geno, Banjo Kazooie, anyone from Castlevania.
@KO-Cub Dat L targeting
Still got my fingers crossed for Simon Belmont and Shovel Knight
@GoshDangTravino haha me too for both!!! If Cloud got in, anything's possible.
Considering Midgar, the battle stage for Midgar seems pretty uninspired atm. The Summon orbs will make for an interesting twist though. Still couldn't help but wish there was more to it...
Bit ironic seeing as FFVII is the one that shunted Nintendo.
People need to learn the meaning of irony.
I'm hoping that this somehow means a Persona character can get in, if one did I wouldn't need anything more from anything ever. Smash 4 would be perfect. (One can dream...)
@CrazedCavalier
Despite that tweet, I still doubt that it could be from the Smash Ballot. Like others have said, nobody seemed to be voting for him so it seems strange that the Smash Ballot choice would be a character who nobody seemingly voted for. I guess it was probably seen as a difficult request since he was probably somebody a higher up at Nintendo requested and he was quite hard to get the rights for (Square Enix are really protective of their IP's. Like, Sony wanted Cloud and Lightning in Play-Station All Stars: Battle Royal but Square refused to let them be included). Not only that, but Cloud seems too complete. A character usually takes 5 months to a year to develop, according to Sakurai, so if he was a ballot winner we would have probably only seen his model at most (similar to Mewtwo).
I wish I would have thought to Vote for Vault Boy while the ballot was live
@GoshDangTravino Simon Belmont would be good choice as Casltevania has the history going back to the NES like Mario, Mega Man etc.
Cloud is a good addition but to bring more diversity they could have gone with Aeris, wielding the staff or Tifa who fights hand to hand like Mario and Luigi.
slice me in half cloud.
