It's that time again as details are confirmed for the Nintendo Download Update in North America. This week brings some highly promising and anticipated releases on the Wii U eShop, with plenty of Nindies pitching in with their latest efforts. In addition the 3DS has a big-name release at retail, while there are a host of discounts available. Let's get to the details.
Missed the European Nintendo Download update details? Sweat not, the information you need is right here.
Wii U eShop
Extreme Exorcism (Ripstone, $12.99, 15% off with Nindies@Home E3 demo) - With a demo previously available as part of the Nindies@Home promotion, this revolves around fast-paced action, with the twist being that when you clear out a crowned ghost in a level the next stage will feature a ghost mimicking your previous moves. As a result each set of stages necessitates good memory, planning and skill to progress. There'll apparently be over 20 weapons, 50 challenges, a story-based mode and local multiplayer options for up to four players. We enjoyed this a great deal in our Extreme Exorcism review.
Nova-111 (Curve Digital, $10.99) - Founded by two former Q-Games (the studio behind the PixelJunk series, Star Fox Command, Star Fox 64 3D) staffers - Eddie Lee and Kalin - Nova-111 is a unique fusion of real time strategy and turn-based puzzle-solving. It takes place over 60 levels and involves saving 111 scientists lost in a time vortex. You can upgrade your ship as you go, which will help to deal with the increasingly dangerous alien forces that you encounter. We'll get cracking on a review.
STARWHAL (Breakfall, $11.99) - An intense and chaotic multiplayer title, the Wii U version includes an exclusive new 5 player mode. This mode titled "Blastopus" involves players fighting against each other, and adds a fifth player to the action with the assistance of the Wii U GamePad. We'll gather some friends for some underwater sort-of sword fighting and bring a review.
Beatbuddy (Threaks, $8.99) - With its title shortened since its initial announcement, this is a music action-adventure game that has an emphasis on rhythm — some moves and key moments need to be timed to the beat. It includes music contributions from Austin Wintory — composer of the Journey official soundtrack — among many others; despite some issues we gave this a modest recommendation in our Beatbuddy review.
Job the Leprechaun (Herrero Games, $2.99) - This peculiarly-named game is a retro platformer, with what seems to be single-screen stages in which you collect clovers, find the door and dodge enemies. We're not sure what else to say, but will get into a review soon.
Hold Your Fire: A Game About Responsibility (Alkterios Games, $1.99) - A rather peculiar premise, this is a space-based shmup where you need to be careful about your actions; for example a stray shot may kill a civilian. We'll blast off for a review.
Wii U Virtual Console
The Ignition Factor (HAMSTER Co., $7.99) - If you're a fan of fire-fighting sims but want a retro flavour to the action, perhaps this SNES title is for you. You tackle blazes in a host of environments (there are eight stages to clear) while mastering fairly unconventional controls. We'll douse the flames in a fresh review, but in the meantime you can check out our Wii Virtual Console The Ignition Factor review.

That's it for North America this week, so let us know what you plan to download in the poll and comments below.

Just like any week. Nothing exciting this week.
not sure but maybe one of the discounts...
Got Extreme Exorcism yesterday and it is excellent. And I kinda had a feeling that Legend of Kay would be getting a price dip before too long so I held off on it but will totally bite at that price.
Come on Nintendo! I want to give you my money, but you are giving me nothing!
Good thing, I bought an Xbox One to spend my money on.
Extreme exorcism demo was soooooo good. I've been looking forward to this week for a long time!
Add the Legend of Kay discount and my wallet is going down! (While my fun is going up!)
Great week!
Animal Crossing Happy Home Designer digitally. Nothing else.
STARWHAL today!!!! Finally... glad to see it's only $12... been waiting for a loooooooooong time.
AC: HHD is only worth about 20 bucks from what reviewers are saying about it. I'll consider getting it once the price inevitably drops next year.
Legend of Kay or Elliot Quest maybe... Getting toward the end of the month though. I need to financially be mindful. Still have to try a few great PSN games I got on sale, like Tomba and Danger of the Ooze. I want to take advantage of the Nindie discounts from getting all those demos, but the only game I REALLY want from that bunch is FREEDOM PLANET.
Mario Maker and MGSV are still excellent. No slowing down.
When do we get StarTropics, NOA?! EU already has 1 and 2 added to Wii U VC...
I loved the game as a kid, but had to use a Game Genie to cheat towards the end. Some of those insta-deaths (wrong direction leap or wrong door) and cheap enemy kills (durn aliens) were brutal. I'm looking forward to tackling this game again with Save States at the ready!
I want to go to CoralCola again!
Well...at least the new Smash Bros stage comes out in a few days.
And 3D Sonic 2 has not been released yet because...?
If you've never gotten Etrian Odyssey, now's the time.
Remember when these days used to be exciting?
I'm very tempted to get Legend of Kay Anniversary since its under $20 for this week only.
HURRY UP!
Well it seems my original comment about Kay worked out well:
"Seems like my kind of game, and $25 is good. Review is good enough. No rush though."
Have to buy it for $12.49 w/ @TheRealThanos vouching for it. Half price in 2 months is kind of crazy though, I'd be ok w/ 6 months, but if I had bought it I'd be pretty annoyed. Still $24 on Amazon, but downloads should be cheaper than discs, no manufacturing, shipping, storage, etc.
http://smile.amazon.com/Legend-Kay-Anniversary-nintendo-wii-u/dp/B00TKLFLNQ/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1443104688&sr=8-1&keywords=kay
Nova 111 looks interesting and most stuff from Curve digital has been great.
Meh. Still nothing for me again...
How much space does the YGO game take? I've always wanted a YGO game for the 3DS/Vita, and it's pretty cheap now with the sale. Sucks that it has less characters, but then I don't care for any YGO series but the original series anyway so I guess it's not really -that- bad. The game's going to have a ton of cards I've never heard before too. It's been sooooo long since I've played it.
I want Xenoblade before the release of Chronicles X, please NoA
You can already download extreme exorcism for some reason. I had the demo if that makes any difference.
I hope the people saying nothing just don't have a Wii U. If I had the money now there are several games I would get.
@Stu13
I might check out that game. This seems like a pretty meh week to me, though.
Ignition Factor! This game was fantastic. Owned the actual SNES cart. You're a firefighter, and you do stuff like put out fires! And rescue civilians.
Another Thursday, another week of getting nothing. It's like Nintendo is run by chimpanzees these days.
Nothing for me. Just waiting for Sonic 2.
@rjejr
I may jump on that too as it is very cheap. I am currently dl DI 1.0 as it is free and I got the Toy Story Playset.
I still haven't gotten Year Walk either. Need to replenish eFunds.
The tables have turned, now the US gets VC releases while EU gets nothing!
Awesome! Forgot about IGNITION FACTOR. I'll have to grab that one. Man, LEGEND OF KAY for half-price? Too bad I bought the retail version. Oh well.
I'll pass for this week; Mario Maker and Plague of Shadows still have me plenty busy for now.
Extreme Exorcism and Starwahl for me. Yes! Maybe Nova-111, too...
@sinalefa - Do you have the portal? I DL DI b/c it was free on Wii U. But I needed an external HDD to fit it on. Then I bought 2 Pirates characters to play after I got the portal w/ DI 2.0. But I couldn't play w/ them b/c I still don't have the 3 game crystal that came w/ the original. I did like Toy Story though, really opens up after you do enough missions to unblock a tunnel. And Lone Ranger is fun as well. But "free", well that's debatable. Are you going to DL DI 3.0 for $20? If you do can you let me know how it is? I just spent $100 on Skylanders dark DK edition so the game money is even tighter than usual.
@DarthNocturnal - "brick and mortar places would complain"
I think that's the one game companies would like us to believe, as its reasonably sound and lets them off the hook, but I think it's the even simpler answer - b/c they can. Why charge less for something if people are willing to pay more? Heck you can pre-order and pay for digital versions of games MONTHS before they even release, b/c you know, wouldn't want the digital version to run out of stock.
@rjejr
I think I never told you or @aaronsullivan. I bought the 2.0 Toy Box starter pack with Merida and Stitch to get the base, had 3.0 downloaded so I could try the latest Toy Box and play the Inside Out playset. Later I got the Toy Story playset so that is why I am getting 1.0
Obviously I cannot make the comparisons yet, but I like what I played of 3.0. The IO playset is nice, 2D and 3D platformer with a puzzle minigame to unlock levels. The Toy Box Hub gives you a lot of minigames/tutorials to farm, play puzzles, adventure, combat, etc.
The editor is not as friendly as say, Mario Maker, but it is great that it allows you to do 2D or 3D platformers, racing tracks, puzzle games, etc.
Lots of Wii U eShop stuff.
So many swell new games and discounts, there's nothing for me this week, and by that, I mean the money in my wallet? ;3
Anyone recommend Legend of Kay? Wondering if my 6 year old would enjoy it. He plays a ton of the Splatoon single player and SM3DW. For $12 I might bite......or wait till xmas and buy the disc when it inevitably drops to $9.99
Anyone know how much space Legend of Kay takes up?
@sinalefa - Wow, you keep playing that much DI the hardcore gamers will make you turn in your gamer badge.
"The Toy Box Hub gives you a lot of minigames/tutorials to farm, play puzzles, adventure, combat, etc."
That's the part I was interested in knowing, I wasn't sure how much would actually be in the $20 DL such as the farming. My favorite thing to do in 2.0 was the design a house missions. Don't think I finished them all but my house is awesome, all the new characters who come to visit tell me so.
There's a $20 platforming pack as an add-on to 3.0 which looks interesting, but I read it was only 6 hours long - which isn't bad for $20 - but if I have to spend $20 to use the add-on then it's really $40, which is too much for 6 hours. But I'll probably get them both eventually, at half price like Kay.
Already have Happy Home predownloaded! I voted for that, although I will also get Extreme Exorcism.
And again, R.I.P. 3DS Virtual Console.
@DarthNocturnal Maybe the US, Canada and Mexico can form the NAU and we can all start using money called the Nano. Probably right after China bankrupts the US.
Just the Mercenaries Saga 2 demo for me this week.
@rjejr
I am not neglecting Splatoon like so many other Mario Maker lovers, my gamer badge is safe
I think there are two add ons. The Take Over and the Speedway. Not sure if I will bite on those. But I think the 6 hour mark is also the average for the playsets, these two just dont include any figures so it stings more. I would probably get the classic SW trilogy playset first.
Animal Crossing for Me this week
Holy crap its been over 4 months since I've even bought a game for my 3ds, for me this is one long ass drought. Will be getting Legend of Legacy in a couple weeks and will be playing the Demo and some FFIX to keep me busy.
@sinalefa The 2 playsets we have - Lone Ranger and Toy Story - I purchased for $15 each, which considering the cost of the toys was almost like getting them for free, so I didn't mind the short play thru times. Oh, we also have the Avengers playset which came w/ 2.0, but I got the whole starter pack w/ my $170 PS3, so it was kind of like all of DI 2.0 was free.
Edit - Oops, we have the Spiderman playset, $15.38 on Amazon this past May. Surprised I never played it this summer.
@Drac_Mazoku @EmmatheBest A delay was announced yesterday. It won't be out for at least another week, though no specific date has been set.
Nothing for me this week. Which is good, because I have far, far, far too many things I still need to play.
I would be tempted by the Legend of Kay discount but there is no extra funds to be found.
@shazeobock
I love me some StarTropics, so I feel your pain. Mike Jones will never seem to get the respect he rightfully deserves
As for this week, Extreme Exorcism is a rather fun game, but I don't have anyone near me to play it with, so, with no online functionality, I'm going to have to pass unfortunately. Starwhal has me intrigued, but I'll wait for the review. Elliot's Quest keeps going on sale, but is still $10-- I'm playing too much stuff as it is already, so I'll wait until that discount drops down some more before I pick it up. Hold your fire sounds... "interesting"... to say the least as it's a reverse shmup, so I'll look forward to that review too. Lastly, I just remembered today to download the demo of Legend of Legacy, and behold, a Mercenaries Saga 2 demo comes out, so I'll be sure to download that one for sure. Not a great week, but I'm so busy gaming I don't even have the time to complain.
Nothing for me this week, though I'm debating about getting the Legend of Kay discount.
I'll glad that the Wii U eshop is receiving some much-needed love, but wish that the 3DS equivalent would at least pick up 2-3 new eshop or VC games a week.
I might consider Legend of Kay at $12.50. Otherwise, nothing for me this week.
@grumblebuzzz the price won't drop. It's a first party title
@Gerbwmu I like it. It kinda plays alittle like Zelda
@SirQuincealot I think the install size showed as right around 3.3 gigs when I bought it earlier.
This AC looks like it ahould cost about $20 to me. I can't afford the game along with a bunch if cards right now. First AC im skipping
I read an article that it's been 30 weeks since the 3DS has had a VC game. I still think 2 a week should be getting uploaded.
I have Animal Crossing ready for pre-purchase. Speaking of which I think you should add that Chibi Robo Zip-Lash is now available for pre-purchase too.
Nothing for me this week, but I will keep an eye on those Wii U discounts.
What happened to 3DS Virtual Console? There hasn't been a release in over 7 months!! They should come back with some Virtual Boy titles or something to make up for lost time...
Legend of Kay already 50% off? I wonder why. Also that game is nearly impossible to find in the stores. GameStop will always have it but it's always in a white box like a Wii game instead of blue for WiiU? Maybe it's just how they all keep presenting it but it seems weird they'd all do it.
Got to move to Europe for better VC releases, still no Metroid Zero Mission from Noa.
Dang. Nothing for me this week. Back to MGS V and Mario Maker.
Am I misunderstanding something ? There's no new Animal Crossing theme up for me.. I'm getting HHD retail tomorrow and LEGO Dimensions on Sunday. I can't waaaait. Gonna be so much fun playing these. ;D
@Dankykong plenty in uk game stores was quite surprised and in a blue box
Wow. It took 70 posts before Metroid Zero Mission was mentioned on the weekly NA eshop update. Must be some sort of record.
Still waiting for 3D Sonic 2
Anyone else remember when they said Sonic 2 3D would come to NA in September? ._.
Why SEGA? Every Thursday of this month I have gotten my hopes up.
@DarthNocturnal Thanks for the help :3 Luckily for me I have a 32GB card and I have more space than I can afford :3
@Polyaqua I'm just glad SEGA decided to continue the 3d Classic's line.
Probably just the Mercenaries Saga 2 demo for me. I remember hearing good things about it on this site, so I might as well check it out. I might eventually get Happy Home Designer, but I'll hold off for now because there are other games coming out that I'm more interested in.
@sketchturner Its a really great game.
I read "Animal Crossing: Extreme Exorcism", like it was a new part in the series...
@sinalefa Glad you're digging DI so far. Makes me think they should charge a little less for those figurines. They could probably get more people to collect them w/out any games and then the value proposition of playing with them virtually becomes too much to resist.
Still waiting on sales for some stuff. @rjejr too. As a heads up Target is doing a $10 off all play sets when the SW original trilogy play set (Rise Against the Empire) debuts on Sept. 29th. I don't even have the starter set but I'm going to try and pick up that and Inside Out. (Just remembered that the prequel play set that comes with starter set is also sold separately. hmm... that plus the digital download effectively means $45 for Starter set rather than $65. Wonder if it's stocked at Target)
So far, I haven't paid full price for anything. I'm a little worried about getting the Star Wars Rebels figurines on sale which my kids will probably want the most, but at least they are in all the stores now.
If things go as planned, $60 on 6 figurines. $45 on equivalent to starter set (2 figs). $50 on two other play sets (4 figs). Hmm... $155 for a game (some games?) and 12 nice looking toys isn't really too bad — especially considering they are all popular licensed properties.
Wow, again nothing. How many weeks in a row will Nintendo save me money? You guys are on a roll here.
@Superryanworld @GraveLordXD Yeah it's my favorite 2D Metroid game. So eager to play it on the big screen.
Will be getting the digital version of Animal Crossing Happy Home Designer, since it's bundled with the original n3DS!
Nothing for me this week but that is largely due to me being very busy with other games. Unless there is a deal that is simply irresistible I will be holding off on buying any games for awhile.
wait a new AC 3DS theme? is it the free one that included with the HHD N3DS bundle? anybody know? if not im buying 3 themes soonish. maybe more.
@Mr_Trill_281 Uuughhhh, no way. Skins for the win.
Wow, 50% getting nothing... Although with the main highlight being a cheap AC spinoff, I can't tell if that's a good or a bad thing. At least some of the indie offerings look promising.
@Mr_Trill_281 LOL no hard feelings. I look forward to it!
@aaronsullivan You know me and my math. If I could pick up the brother -sister playset for $25, and Toy Box 3.0 for $20, that might be too good to pass up, and I'll just pick up Takeover when it's on sale for $10 sometime over the next few months. Not like I need it, only realized today I bought the Spiderman playset back in May.
Thanks for the Target tip, I used to get everything I needed to know from CAG, but since their layout update the website is practically unusable.
@KnightRider666 Nintendo saves me money that can be put towards the awesome sales Sony has been having over the past couple of months.
Honestly, I don't get why every update for the eshop is so lackluster or why the 3DS has not gotten a new Virtual Console game in almost 9 months.
They have NES games on the 3DS service, so why can't we get Star Tropics i & II, the first Earthbound, or Vs Excitebike?
Every week Nintendo just slaps 3DS owners in the face with their pathetic eshop updates.
Yes Nintendo, the universe will not blow up if you put out Animal Crossing: Happy Home Designer and Star Tropics in the same week.
You might be shocked when you make the fans like myself who don't care for Animal Crossing happy.
@Caryslan Those flash sales have been pretty good. Picked up several snk games for dirt cheap.
I'd take Animal Crossing: Extreme Exorcism as I thought the article said. It sounds fun.
@Caryslan: I agree, it's messed up; and I don't get it either. I have every VC and 3D Classic game for the 3DS. I have been waiting for more, & I believe the DK Land Trilogy were the last VC games we've gotten for the 3DS. Screw Animal Crossing, I don't see the hype.
@GammaPhonic Animal Crossing: Extreme Exorcism DOES sound more interesting to me than Animal Crossing: Happy Home Designer.
I'll be getting Legend of Kay sooner than planned now.
@rjejr: Oh Legend of Kay for 50% off! Might have to dust off the Wii U and download that. Is the Wii U still at $299???
@Ryno Until the red Wii U Mini comes out for $199.
Would be getting Extreme Exorcism, except that I hate when Wii U games exclude off-tv play for no reason.
Elliot Quest and Legend of Kay have both been on my radar for some time now. Which is these is the better of the two? Extreme Exorcism also looks like it's gonna be pretty fun
@rjejr Ha! If it isn't Rowdy Roddy rjejr, my favorite senior gamer (next to myself obviously). Well, I will still vouch for that game if you like a game that has elements of Mini Ninjas, Mario and Zelda, so it's a platformy, Zelda-ish action adventure in an Asian setting.
Back in the day it was a real hidden gem and with it looking even better now and having some of the rough edges taken off, I can only recommend it even more.
Then again, everybody has a different taste in games, so what I like isn't necessarily appealing to somebody else, but I'm going to take a gamble on this one and I'm pretty sure that at the very least you will come away finding it a pleasant experience having played this game, so let me know when you've had some time to dive into it. Cheers...
@rjejr P.S. Sorry for the late response: had some family and business affairs to take care of. The latter especially absorbed a lot of my time. Haven't read an NLife article in weeks,,,
@TheRealThanos " Haven't read an NLife article in weeks,,,"
You've missed exactly nothing. Oh sure, SMM released, and some amibo are back in stock, but the Star Fox Zero delay - of which much was written, very little of it positive - has turned this place into weird news and "indie" central. NX can't come soon enough. Or at least the new Club Ntineod. Oct is in 2 days and the old CN in the US shut down way back in June. They may have some great games, but I'm doubting their ability to capably function as a company in the 21`st century.
Legend of Kay has been great fun so far. My favorite game of all time is the 1st Jak and Daxter, not a huge fan of 2, 3 or 4, and despite all the talk of this being Zelda, of which I'm not a huge fan except for Hyrule Warriors, it's very much J&D to me. And the first Kung Fu Panda game. In fact this is basically KFP w/o the skins. Since this came out 3 years earlier I wonder if KFP devs played this first? Anyway about about 4 or 5 hours in and having a good time remembering my PS2 glory days of J&D, R&C and Sly. He moves like Sly. Oh sure, the voice acting is atrocious and probably PC racist, but I grew up on 70's Saturday morning kung fu flicks, you'ld have to get really bad for me not to enjoy the badness.
