The Japanese market sure loves a marketing slow burn with drip-fed information, and Capcom has now kicked that off with another entry in one of its most beloved franchises. It's been confirmed in Famitsu Weekly that Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney 6 is in development for the 3DS and will feature "a new system for quicker play"; that appears to be the extent of the announcement.
It's pleasing news, nevertheless, and shows a continuing commitment from Capcom to keep the quirky series going on Nintendo's portable hardware. Its most recent release in the franchise was The Great Ace Attorney, which has performed reasonably well in Japan; we're still awaiting localisation details which, based on recent precedent, will likely be for an eShop-only release.
The 3DS has had a decent batch of Ace Attorney titles, overall - released globally we've also had Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney - Dual Destinies and Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy.
Are you pleased to hear that another entry is in development, or perhaps simply eager to hear localisation details for The Great Ace Attorney? Let us know.

Whoops, that was a waste of a news tip!
I'm excited to hear about this, I hope we get to see this title in the West too.
Wow
I've enjoyed Dual Destinies enough that I would look into the next one. Its always good to see a series of quality continue.
"A new system for quicker play?" Man, I personally don't feel that's needed. I love these games for being able to fall into them.
I thought these games ended. ha ha I've only managed to try one, wasn't too big on it but it was only a short little demo.
Come on Physical Release!
word salad of joy
Woot! Still working on Great right now though... No free time! Will likely buy in both English and Japanese.
YES! More Phoenix, Apollo and Athena! =D
I actually thought the main series ended and they were working on The Great Ace Attorney, but I'm glad I was wrong. Hopefully some more old characters return like Maya and Detective Gumshoe.
I'm starting to get a bit worried about GAA not getting localized, to be honest.
This is great news, however. I'm really looking forward to seeing all of my favorite characters again. Also, please have Maya in there, guys. I need those dynamics back in my gaming life.
I never expected GAA to be localized. I had a gut feeling. Can't really explain why.
Here's hoping for a bright future.
Blast it Capcom! Just bring both games to the west, please!
Not to sure about the great ace attorney making it here, but, I can see this one coming of course I would love both to make it!
The Great Ace Attorney seems too Japanese for Capcom to bother localizing it, which makes me quite sad.
@Peace-Boy If there is no Gumshoe, I will question all of humanity. That guy should have his own games by now; I can't believe he was replaced in Dual Destinies.
Yay!
Two ace attorney games on the way. (hopefully) I can't get enough of this series!
Just finished the case on the first one where Edgeworth is accused of shooting the man in the boat. I reckon i spent about 7 or 8 hours on it. Is that case abnormally long or am i a terrible sleuth/lawyer?
While I'm a bit nervous about whether we'll get The Great Ace Attorney, I have really high hopes that we'll at least get Ace Attorney 6.
As you can tell from my avatar, this is what I live and breath for.
@REALLYFEELINIT Well, I think the reason he was replaced was because Detective Fulbright had a purpose in DD. But Gumshoe could have still been in the game another way though, something similar to the 5th case in the first game would have made sense. He could have been in the game to help Phoenix and the others around. Also, he and Fulbright could have had some kind of rivalry thing going on which would have made the game even more funny.
I really hope he does make it into the next game though, seeing him in 3D would be really cool.
At least Pearls and Edgeworth were in the game, which was awesome but still not enough for past characters.
@Peace-Boy To be fair, I'm only about halfway through case 4 in Dual Destinies, so I haven't seen Fulbright's arc resolved yet. I just feel like there needs to be a blend between the pre-Apollo Justice and post-Apollo Justice characters in 6. I'm all for not dwelling on the past, but characters like Larry Butz, Gumshoe, OIdbag, Byrde, and so on are what made this franchise so beloved. Even if they don't all return, we need at least a few to hold some role of significance. Hell, I'll settle for seeing Franziska again.
@ghostjoshu You might be a little rusty, but that is easily one of the longest cases in the series. If you haven't moved on to the next case (case 5, "Rise from the Ashes"), just know that one is even longer. "Rise from the Ashes" is the longest case in the series, without question.
I really love the Ace Attorney games, there is something deeply comforting about the humour and the characters and general ridiculousness of it all.
Although I do sometimes wonder if that's the game itself or the localisation?
@REALLYFEELINIT Wow! the next ones even longer than that? I got the trilogy pack and am really enjoying it but i feel like i always need a real solid session to sink my teeth into the cases. I would've got Dual Destinies but i saw a lot of user reviews say you can't really play it as a standalone game- i'm guessing that must be because of the recurring characters ya need to know
YES!!! This just made my day!
Aww yeah! More is always better when it comes to Ace Attorney!
I just finished the incredibly long fifth and final Turnabout Trial in the first Ace Attorney which brings my total of completed Ace Attorney games to three, the others being Justice For All (Psyche Locks rule!) and Professor Layton Vs. Phoenix Wright (which I would love to see a sequel to, it's such a phenomenal game). If Capcom not localizing the too-Japanese DLC for Dual Destinies is any indication, it proves doubtful for The Great Ace Attorney's localization even though it's one of the only series that is a Day One buy for me.
@ghostjoshu It's pretty long, the last cases are made to be long so that they seem really epic. Case 5 was added in the first remake of the game and will be even longer since it was supposed to justify rebuying a game with little replay value.
I'm just about finished the first one. I should be about 60 before I make it to PW6 👴🏻
Still hoping GAA will make its way West. Regardless I can't wait for this to come westward, another adventure with Phoenix and the gang is very much needed.
@ghostjoshu Dual Destinies absolutely needs to be played after you've finished, bare-minimum, the first game AND Apollo Justice. I guess the second and third titles aren't completely necessary, but they do flesh out Phoenix's character a lot more leading up to Apollo Justice and Dual Destinies. And the original trilogy as a whole is just plain stellar.
OMG OMG Yes, yes, YES! Guess I'm too excited to hear this.
Dear Capcom, please listen to our wish, localize The Great Ace Attorney and this, pretty please?
Yes! I've been waiting for information on Ace Attorney 6, even if it was just a minor confirmation that it's coming for 3DS (as I thought that the games were on a hiatus, with the Great Ace Attorney and what not). I can't wait to see Maya, Gumshoe, Butz, etc. all in 3D—I mean there are so many characters from the franchise that we haven't seen in a main series game (meaning excluding the Investigations games, which were great, esp. the second one, but I miss seeing them interact with Wright and all) since Trials & Tribulations.
Granted Dual Destinies was fantastic in its development of original characters (as well as fixing old ones, like Apollo), but Ace Attorney 6 has a tall order to fill in that it has to deal with so many characters of Phoenix's past (Franziska, Gumshoe, Maya, etc.) that were completely shunned in Apollo Justice, as well as factoring in that there are now three lawyers at the Agency.
CONFIRMED FOR LOCALIZATION VIA NINTENDO WORLD REPORT!!!
Man i only had time to play part 1 2 3 back in the day and now we are up to 6 and more. How the times fly when your having fun. I gotta get up to speed im so lost on these newer characters thats for sure.
@REALLYFEELINIT But his replacement had the BEST TWIST EVER
Also please release Apollo Justice:AA on the 3ds with the new art style cause I need smooth Klavier in my life
@nessisonett If I hadn't already been halfway through case 4, that little hint there would have really irked me. It still did, but seeing as I'm not far from that moment, I'll get over it.
I've never got round to playing any AA games, but have been meaning to play Dual Destinies and Trilogy. It would be fantastic to see this new one localised.
@crimsontadpoles Play Trilogy at your earliest convenience. You won't regret it.
6 has been confirmed for localization already.
So we're still waiting on a localisation of Great Ace Attorney, yet Ace Attorney 6 is confirmed for the west within an hour or two of the game's announcement? Well okay then.
I thought Dual Destinies was a much weaker than average installment in the series and I'm hoping for Dai Gyakuten Saiban to be a fresh breeze when (if) it gets localised, so I don't know how interested I am in a main series sequel for now...
I still want that Miles Edgeworth 2 game. But I'll take any Ace Attorney game. Hope it gets released outside of Japan.
@IceClimbers Well, that's Capcom for you. I'm hopeful of a Great Ace Attorney localization at this point, but I can also see why so many people are saying they don't think its happening. There's a very fine line between optimism and skepticism with this announcement and how it relates to GAA.
Well, I'm happy as long as it gets over here.
I can't wait to see this come over here! Although it will probably be digital only which would be a shame.Looking forward to hearing more news about this.
Cool, I love this franchise, although I hadn't expected them to announce a new one so soon after the last one released!
Wait, 6? So the 3 original Phoenix Wright games, Apollo Justice, and Dual Destinies are the first 5? Is the Great Ace Attorney a spin-off?
@ALinkttPresent Yes, just like Ace Attorney Investigations 1 and 2.
Also, I'm among the ones being pessimistic about GAA's chances in the west after the very quick announcement of AA6, but we'll see. I'm super glad the latter is totally confirmed already, but I'll be very bummed if my suspicions on the former prove right.
@LinkSword Thanks! It was never announced for American release, so I never looked at it that much and assumed it was a main game >.<
All I hope for is Maya's return. Pleeeeaaasse let it happen.
so the 6 looks like a Magatama...rubs hands in glee I am expecting some spirit shenanigans!
For the record, it is already confirmed for a western release
I JUST DIED
Dual Destinies had some big flaws, but I think the presentation was incredible by any standard. That sort of "grand finale" deduction thing during all the trials was awesome (and, for the Nine-Tails Vale trial, actually worked like it was intended for me: I hadn't actually figured out the twist before then, so it was kind of a cool reveal)
Update: Confirmed for western release
What about Great Ace Attorney? More work for the fans to translate?
@Ryu_Niiyama
Wow, that's kinda clever. I'm excited to see what they'll do next with the story. I'd like to see Maya and Gumshoe.
Great news!
http://nintendoeverything.com/capcom-france-indicates-that-there-are-no-plans-for-the-great-ace-attorney-localization/
i'm gonna put this here and cry in the corner
@Luffymcduck It'd be unplayable on 3DS without some kind of shady exploit, even if they translated the whole thing... I doubt that'll happen. Either we get an official release in the west or we'll just not have the game.
HOORAY
Hmm, this is fast after the last one. Seems this series is popular again!
