In a surprisingly bold move Nintendo has already begun to drip-feed us new content for its acclaimed new shooter experience Splatoon, despite the game having been released less than a week ago. This takes the form of the new shooter-style weapon called the N-Zap '85 styled after the NES Zapper, and Port Mackerel, a new map for both Regular Battle and Ranked Battle.
There's no need to wait for an update to download or fiddle around with any settings, the new content will be announced by Callie and Marie as a newsflash and will immediately be available to use (providing you're the correct level in the case of the N-Zap '85).
Glance your eyeballs at the video below which takes you through all the details of this twosome of new content, and make sure you check out our coverage of the newly available Ranked Battle as well.

Did you know you can shoot the hoop in the weapons training area? Watch me do it here. The N-Zap '85 is pretty cool, but I went back to my golden Aerospray RG.
I really want this game!!! my birthday is only 9 days away, and that is too long to wait........
@Yorumi I'm torn on this style. It kinda reminds me of the old days of Counter-Strike where a map rotation would come up that would suck but you'd just hammer through it and make the best of it. You got better at the map and it ended up not being as bad in the end. I understand this isn't the case for every map in every game, but Splatoon's method did get me a little nostalgic.
@Yorumi - Haven't had a chance to play port Mackerel yet so I'm looking forward to it, but I did stop playing whenever Walleye Warehouse got paired up w/ Saltspray Rig, I had enough of those 2 after the beta. I figure that's what single player and offline vs is for.
So they made this brilliant level full of cargo crates that you can't get on top of so it's just a maze? Well that's no fun. I thought the players were just bad until they showed the map at the end and not a single top was inked. Wish they would have made it symmetrical like saltspray rig to change things up a bit, too many rectangles. Only the skatepark is truly different so far.
Guess you were right @Sinalefa I might even buy a roller now just for this map. And I've been meaning to try out the kraken but I just hate the rollers when I test them. Will never bring a roller into ranked play, they're just the ducks in duck hunt.
@Yorumi I like warehouse and the mall map, saltspray is pretty nice too.
Love the Zapper
Maybe will be use the orange color for the zapper too
@rjejr
Sounds nice. Imagine how unfair this level would have been with everyone using chargers and trying to hit the people down there over and over.
Maze can be fun as you don't know who is going to pop up around the corner. Again, a roller paradise unless you get a guy with a gun and the next corner is too faraway to reach safety.
Kinda left field question: when we see rjejr in Splatoon, is that you or do your kids appear as rjejr as well?
@rjejr Thankfully, you CAN get on top of the crates. You just can't spray the top of them. But it is interesting to be able to jump from crate to crate and have a vantage point.
@sinalefa - No, unless there's another rjejr in the world it's me. And there is, b/c another rjejr beat me to the twitter name rjejr, so I'm bobmrik on twitter. My kids play as London and well I don't know the other one, I get the NNID and nicknames confused. MasBen maybe, though I think that's his PSN name. Mostly he just plays Minecraft.
And yes, Mackerel Port is much fairer this way, and its probably a good thing, but you know how it is when you expect 1 thing but get the exact opposite. Glad I saw the vid first though before I played it, better to get annoyed now than then.
Maybe they'll have a similar Mackeral Port w/ no floor, all squid jumping and line riding between areas like the single player?
@C-Threep - Well that's good to know, but it looks like no swimming up, just jumping up the moving vehicle? Guess I really need to try it out for myself. And I needed an excuse to try buy the Kraken roller anway.
@rjejr
I noticed that your NNID is actually the same as your twitter, now that you mention it.
Kraken roller is awesome. Just make sure to jump while Kraken to splat inklings. I was trying to run over them and nothing happened, then I noticed you have to jump so the squid makes the spin attack.
@sinalefa - Gotta jump. got it.
@Yorumi - I'm convinced a rotation of 4 is coming soon. When you approach the tower it has 4 tv's showing off the current maps. I think they will change it by the August update and you will see all 4 maps in the current rotation as you head to the tower......just incase you ignore the Squid Sisters
@rjejr
One does not simply release the Kraken. Got it.
Perhaps the level rotation is so that it is easier to select your weapons (easier to have your weapon choice to suit 2 levels, instead of all, to save you keep changing)
I kinda wish they had bought out ink brush instead of the zapper!
As ink brush is on back of the box art but no were in the game!
As of yet!
Yeah I'm not sure I like the whole "feeding us content slowly" thing, since in the US it's a fully priced 60$ game. Seems a bit shady for us to pay that much for a game that doesn't seem to be quite complete in terms of online play. In fact, the offline campaign feels much more robust at the moment.
My (admittedly minor) complaint is that the squid news keeps spamming me. Not only do they run this every time I boot the game up, but they sometimes kick me off the online lobby just to tell me the same crap I've heard 10 times now. This seems pointless and all they do is talk about the stages. At least talk about the weapons or something. Some variety would make this needless intrusion a lot less annoying.
But that's just me griping.
The zapper is fun. Port mackerel is also fun. Lots of different ways the battle can turn out...
