Satoru Iwata is a popular figure with many Nintendo fans, so when the announcement came that he would not be attending this year's E3 there was some disappointment and concern. Concerns arose after Iwata-san missed last year's E3 due to an operation to remove a tumour from his bile duct. At the time some were worried the fan favourite President would not return at all to his post, but since his arrival back in October 2014 he says his health has been going from strength to strength.
Concerning his non-attendance this year, Nintendo's President stated that he thought it important to keep Nintendo's Japanese fans up to date via Twitter, using the #Iwatter hashtag. He stated in one of his tweets:
With the exception of last year, I've been going to the E3 every year. However, as there's no new hardware to present this year and considering the fact that a general meeting of shareholders is planned for the week following the E3, I will remain in Japan this year. My role at E3 this year is to relay everything happening at E3 to everyone that's in Japan.
Iwata-san also updated his fans with a photo from Mr. Miyamoto arriving at the conference.
I just received this [photo] earlier but it looks like Mr. Miyamoto has already reached Los Angeles. Seeing the E3 logo gives you that feeling that 'Oh, E3 is finally getting started!'
In true Nintendo style, Iwata-san decided to show off his new Mii, which reflects his weight loss.
Because of the operation I underwent in June last year, I've become a little thin. My weight has more or less remained the same since I left the hospital and it seems as though I'll be able to maintain this figure, so I decided to update my official Mii to reflect my present condition. Please be kind to it.
Despite the absence of Satoru Iwata we can look forward to appearances from Shigeru Miyamoto, Reggie Fils-Aime, Bill Trinen, the Treehouse team and more during this E3. Hopefully Iwata-san will return to the event next year.

At least he is trying, its good to see he won't be pushing himself.
So that means he will be at next year's E3 for certain as there will be the NX to discuss, even if not fully revealed. And assuming it is shown at E3 and not before as I can see Nintendo wishing to not overshadow Wii U and/or 3DS games with new hardware that won't be available for another 18 months.
It good that he's doing ok healthwise now. Even though I always enjoy seeing him at E3, I'm not bothered about him being absent. There should still be plenty of Nintendo content there for us to enjoy it.
Aww I prefer the pudgier Iwata of yore, but I'm glad he's doing better.
Also, what the heck happened to Nintendo Life's front page???
Feel bad for Iwata. Guys has all these health problems. Sucks...
Don't feel bad, that is his business. He probably has evolved from sex raged Japanese businessman to feeble tea hermit.
He most likely have issues with the west and feels there are more important things to do in his own nation.
Worldwide realease of that special mii via spotpass would be nice! I like Iwata. Best of luck to him.
Never even noticed his weight
@whodatninja it got hyped for E3. I am still getting used to it as well.
I love this guy! He seems like a total gentleman 😀
That is so sweet You chill Iwata, you deserve it, Nintendo is finally moving up!
@whodatninja IKR D: chaos!
@EverythingAmiibo I'm scared!
Does he really need to be their this year? No not really. Though E3 is mainly for the American audience (release date wise and what not) most international countries (Europe, Australisa etc...) do watch it. But because its focus is reveals for the American's & surrounding areas, it falls to Reggie to deliver, after all he is President of the American's. Leave Iwata to do the main directs and Japan announcements. E3 is when it falls to Reggie to shine.
is it just me or does shigeru miyamoto look a bit younger on this photo?
@IAmDeclanJay Reggie is President of the American's? Wow that was quick, when did this happen? What does this mean for Xbox and PlayStation? 😃
@JaxonH - Squid bitten, huh? I approve.
Props to Ant Dickens, or whoever, for the new funky E3 front page. Can we break out that countdown timer whenever there's a new ND? It even has the time right for me. Send the code to Reggie, his pages only ever have west coast time.
I'm ok w/ Iwata not being there, and I'm impressed he even bothered w/ the explanation rather than just a "please understand".
1 more day.
@FragRed They never said that he are going to talk about NX during E3 2016. They only said that they weren't going to talk about NX until at least 2016, which could also mean late 2016, or 2017. I don't think they'll wait that long, but nothing is technically confirmed.
@rjejr Haha. You and accurate time.
Sadly, I can't help but be suspicious that Iwata has ongoing health problems or might have them and he is just smiling through it for everyone.
@rjejr
Bro fist!
Er... Tentacle sucker slap?
@Steel76 Urban Champion HD
I still feel like Iwata is battling a serious disease...he has lost so much weight...I hope I'm wrong though but some cancers are really tough to beat 100% and can return. As a survivor myself it really worries me.
Glad to hear it's not health issues keeping him away from E3 this year but still a bit concerned that it's health issues that have contributed to his weight loss. I hope he can get those under control soon and achieve the weight he wants to be naturally instead of through means which are cause for concern. (I don't care if that means he gets pudgy again or if that means he drops more weight - just as long as it is not his health issues dictating the fluctuation.)
It only makes sense, someone has to run the castle while the rest of the crew brings the excitement to E3.
Next year, I expect to see Iwata come in dancing with an NX console in his hands
His new Mii has some big eyebrows!
Also, loving the front page redesign!
@PurpleSquirrel64, It must be the jacket. PR probably wants to make him look more relatable to all the youngins.
Good on Iwata for taking it easy. Reggie and Miyamoto can handle e3. I just hope we see another Reggie vs. Iwata battle sequence.
Iwata won me when he refused to lay off employees and cut his own salary. Stay in Japan and please understand!
@Grumblevolcano Balloon Fight REDUX!
@Grumblevolcano Balloon Fight REDUX!
Mister Iwata, I wish you good health. And hopefully we see you again pretty soon.
Nintendo's staff are so lovable, unlike Sony's.
He doesn't want to get caught in Bill Trinen's death stare and turn into stone.
....I thought you guys posted about this some time ago. o.0
@WaveBoy I hope you now feel guilty about that remark, you inconsiderate fool.
@WaveBoy Of course I wouldn't feel guilty if something bad happened to YOU. You would deserve it, for what you said. Do you have any idea how many franchises he has contributed to? No, of course you wouldn't. You think people were criticizing IWATA. NO ONE was criticizing him (other than you, of course). They were simply criticizing/making fun of his "Please Understand" remark when he was delaying a Wii U game. And no one was blaming him. He may be the guy in charge, but when it came to how long the games took to be made, it was all on the programmers. Even when the Wii U failed, he accepted his mistakes. He even cut down his own salary when Nintendo was planning on laying off their workers. He was a respected person of the gaming industry, and people around the world mourned when he died. There have been multiple tributes made for him, and he will forever be remembered as a significant part of Nintendo and its history.
I sincerely hope you now regret that idiotic comment you made regarding his lack of presence at E3 2015. Nobody felt any negative feelings toward Iwata, and I'm sure anyone here would agree.
