Nintendo has revealed a new Zelda game for the 3DS called The Legend of Zelda: Tri Force Heroes during its Digital Event at E3.
Calling to mind Four Swords Adventures, this 3-player title appears to use the Link Between Worlds game engine and is indeed being handled by the same director, Hiromasa Shikata.
It will focus on players moving through dungeons and working together to overcome obstacles. The most interesting addition this time around is the "Totem" mechanic, which sees players standing on each other's shoulders to solve puzzles and fight enemies. The Totem feature is why the game only supports 3 players - according to Shikata-san, 4 players created a Totem which was "too tall".
Online play will be supported. Despite the strong multiplayer focus, you'll still be able to play solo, with CPU-controlled characters standing in for other players, which you'll be able to toggle between.
You'll also be able to try on different outfits which offer various perks and skills, and each stage will aim to offer a different experience depending on what clothing you have on.
Triforce Heroes launches this Fall. Excited?

Sounds awesome!
Hey, why not? It's Zelda. I'll bite.
Different outfits? Online multiplayer? Zelda?
Yes.
Looks decent ^_^
This game was my highlight, the co-op looks very fun for my girlfriend and I.
Meh, not a fan of these multiplayer centric games, always feels like they water down the game along the way.
This game looks awesome. It reminds me of a Kirby X Zelda game. Now if they would release Four Swords Adventures!
Don't mind this, liked Four Swords games, but... Seriously, 4 players is too tall? Poor purple Link. R.I.P.
Alongside Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam, this is what got me most excited. Other than the reasons @Azikira mentioned, well, it's a spiritual successor to Four Swords Anniversary, which is all fine and dandy in my book. I wouldn't have cared for it if it was multiplayer-only like the first Four Swords, but I'm glad to see this isn't the case.
It should be at least 4 player. I love hectic online battles! Will this be a true successor to Four Swords Adventures, I wonder?! Perhaps, if it was the same scope (and I wish it had the same game engine, FSA had the best 2D game engine in my opinion), I would like it more! Maybe they'll improve it somewhat before launch?
Yes!!!!!!! This looks wicked, I'll certainly give this a go come later this Fall! Its Four Swords Reimagined!
It looks cute. I really want to play this!
@AlexSora89
Well, at least it will be widely available, unlike Anniversary Edition. However, I think that Four Swords (and Adventures) had a much superior game engine to A Link Between Worlds. Anniversary Edition should have had online play, but this does, which means it will be pretty good for me!
Awesome! The best part of Zelda are the dungeons. I'll be getting this but only after I beat ALBW.
It took them eleven years of having handhelds with built-in wireless functionality, but they finally gave us a multiplayer Zelda game. No more link cables for this guy!
@davidevoid while I agree fully, having a solo mode where you can control each character, saves the day and I think this game will be fun.
@thedevilsjester personally that sounds tedious to me and will end up feeling a little empty in singleplayer (just like past multiplayer Zelda games)
This... didn't blow me away. Having said that, I was wary of ALBW at first, and that's now one of my favourite Zeldas, so we'll see.
Definitely going to play this with my friends. While I wish it could have been on Wii U, a new Four Swords is really nice.
Looks like half-*ssed filler.
This could be really fun!
This, the Metroid game, and the Animal Crossing Party game are 3 examples of Nintendo taking an awesome IP and watering it down to mobile freemium style games. Ugh.
@OneBagTravel
This is actually the next entry in the "Four Swords" style of Zelda that was last seen on the GameCube and GBA. Nothing to do with mobile whatsoever.
This didn't wow me, but it at least looks good.
A four swords revival? Cool i sniff pretty cool i guess.
Meh, hopefully I can convince some of my friends to get this so I can actually play it...
Q) Excited?
A) Sort of. There are other games I'd much rather get coming out around the same time. I'll probably pick up this game later next year.
That said, this news will likely make my younger brother happy, as it is a Four Swords style Zelda game, and Four Swords Adventure is his favourite Zelda game of all.
Looks pretty good. I glad they reuse ALBW engine, as I really love to see more of it. Although, I'll prefer if they have direct sequel to ALBW, but I'll take this!
Meh. Looks ok.
@SanderEvers I didn't count it because it was just an enhanced re-release of the GBA one. It's weird that it took them so long to make an exclusive one.
So it is coming this fall already.
AWESOME!
It's been over ten years since Four Sword Adventures, it's about time to get a new co-op Zelda.
The treehouse play sold me on this game. I don't know what happened but the intro videos seemed to be really lousy this year. This and Metroid Prime FF are both much better than they look in those videos when seen in longer play. Sometimes game play is hard to display in short bursts I guess.
I fell in love with this, when I saw it earlier today. I'm getting this I loved the look of A Link Between Worlds (and the game itself).
Any game which features "Lucky Loungewear" is alright in my book.
This, Super Mario Maker, and Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam were my main highlights.
Thank goodness they didn't give this project to the same people handling ''Metroid'', Link looking more like Lonk from Pennsylvania would be the last of our worries.
Snarky remarks aside, this looks fun enough to me. I get Four Swords Adventures vibes from it in the sense that the idea is for it to be co-op but it also has the choice to make it a solo run together with AI-controlled companions for those who can't/don't feel like getting some more people to play through it.
Online multiplayer has me very much sold personally, although I'd still love for some kind of versus mode like in Adventures, where you could actually do Link vs Link fights with all sorts of items. Those were good times... Oh well, I think I'll have fun nonetheless.
@business-scrub Can't you do the multiplayer online with strangers?
@Fazzie_Bear
Same here. Now please don't kill me, I'm not the night guard.
I was super hyped for this right up until they said that the competitive elements were removed and you all share the same health meter. Come on, fighting for force gems was the best part of FSA! Where's the fun if you can't screw each other over?
This looks fantastic. Day one!
@OneBagTravel This looks bad to you? This of all games, and what the hell does this have to do with mobile games and how the hell did you come up with that conclusion?
Online multiplayer?! SO MUCH YES! Instabuy for me!
Watched the Nintendo Treehouse coverage of it. It looks awesome!!
If it's a cheap eShop title then I can't complain. If it's a €45 release then I do.
