It's no lie that due to the popularity of the ultra-competitive gaming scene that co-operative gameplay has taken rather a sideline in recent years. Luckily all is not quite lost, and a handful of developers are still keen to provide this style of gameplay for the fans who crave it, and there's no example better than Affordable Space Adventures from KnapNok Games and Nifflas.
Watch the video below to see just why co-op is so important even in modern times, and make sure you check out our review of the game if you haven't already seen it.

Sat down in my home yesterday with two of my best friends after dinner and we played "Call of Duty Black Ops II" and "Mario Party 10" on Wii U plus "WWE Day of Reckoning" on the Wii. Online multiplayer will never be able to beat the amount of fun of having people in the same room gathered around the TV.
I agree with you, Alex. I've played Affordable Space Adventure in both single player and 3-player co-op (up to level 16 in both campaigns now), and the experience is bigger when shared, even if you actually do less than while playing in single player mode.
Same thing with the co-op vs. single player missions in Pikmin 3.
Co-op can save a terrible game (imagine destiny with no co-op) and increase replay value (think i played through World at War's story mode more times than all the other CoD's combined).
@shiryu yeah no online game can match the atmosphere of local play. UNLESS you get multiple systems in the same room and play online together then you get the best of both worlds, me and my best friend did this with the likes of Brink, Battlefield and titanfall
Co-op is great. It works so well for a lot of games. I just wish Nintendo would do more online co-op. Most of my friends have moved away to other parts of the Country/ World.
What a noob.

Modern Gamers
Some of my best gaming memories with family, and friends involved couch co-op! Then online came along and created more unique experiences! I enjoy single player games too, nothing beats being fully emerged into an epic game!
Years before online streaming was created or popular my sister and cousins would watch and help me play through games like Resident Evil 1-4, MGS series, Silent Hill, and numerous others. Couch co-op will always be my favorite form.
I love co-op. Thing is, you really do need online here in the west. While local may be more fun, it's also very hard to organize. So in many cases, and certainly for me, it's online co-op or no co-op, cause I have no one to play with in person.
I definitely prefer local co-op to online, sometimes my friends and I would set up a couple TV's so we could play Monster Hunter Tri in the same room haha.
I also hope we can see a new four swords game soon or a re-release of Four Swords Adventures on Wii U. One player could use the gamelan while the others could use a 3DS as the other screens, it would be much more convenient than the way it worked on GameCube.
It goes without saying, couch co-op every time.
@yokokazou I have been thinking the same thing for Zelda 4 Swords. Wii U and 3DS are much more appropriate for a remake/re-release of that game. I had always wanted to try it too, but those GBA link cables (and another friend in MY circle that HAD a GBA) were harder to come by than a GC adapter for the Wii U in the wild now.
agreed. i wish i had 2 or 3 gba's so i could play multiplayer crystal chronicles. that game was awsome.
I am very sad, that splitscreen almost disappeared in most games (aka: driving games). Mario kart has it and Sonic racing series, but that is mostly ... sad, sad things.
I'm waiting for my copy of Resident Evil Revelations 2 to arrive, one of the main selling points to me was split screen co-op. Mario 3D World is a bit hit with me and my niece too, thanks again to co-op gameplay
I'm playing Affordable alone, but I hope to play with my bro sometime
Its sad that co-op is rare these days,
Everything is just online, which is great, but it will never beat playing with someone on the same room.
Fun times playing Secret of mana and Seiken densetsu 3 with with bro.
Well I dunno about co-op but playing Journey has taught me that the act of playing alongside another human and engaging together, without trying to kill or one-up each other bur rather just sharing in the same adventure and experiencing shared moments, can be one of the most rewarding and truly magical experiences in gaming.
Trying to think of N64 co-op examples - Jet Force Gemini - Floyd the droid...
ummmmm....
Co-op, the ruin of many a modern franchise!!! ... I'm looking at you God of War, Resident Evil, Dead Space!!!
@YoshiTails perfect dark!!!
I totally agree. I'm always looking for good co-op games.
@JaxonH
Sucks, man. Many people are in this boat, of course. Not sure I'd categorize it as something specifically in "the west" though.
Thing is, my early teen year afternoons were spent with buddies huddled around a Nintendo or Sega console just trying everything. Even the single player stuff was more fun. PC gaming for awhile meant LAN parties, too. That was such a hassle, yet at least for awhile nobody complained because it was worth it. Even if for just a couple hours of gaming.
It's amazing how the more "connected" we are via the internet but how much less intimate it all becomes. I really do recommend everybody try and find some people to play games with that are near you. Seek it out, go embarrass yourself if you have to. Life's too short to play alone (or through wires).
@YoshiTails
Mario Kart 64 with two player Grand Prix can be a fun sort of co-op but you've got a good point.
@AshFoxX @DarthNocturnal @yokokazuo
Really want an easy way to play Four Swords again. That game was so fun, but it was so hard to play with he batteries running out on the GBAs all the time that we eventually gave up. Same thing with Crystal Chronicles. We really tried but it was so hard! Never finished either of them.
They could do a GamePad version where you could steal the GamePad (in game) that would give you the ability to go into the secret areas, but then others could steal it back... I do think it will be much more possible in the next generation of hardware, fortunately.
Lord of the Rings Return of the King was good coop
Collegues and I are having a ton of fun with Affordable Space Adventures so far.
