Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate has now been out for one week, and early indications suggest that its arrival in the West has brought improved sales over its predecessors - perhaps it's finally establishing a stronger foothold outside of Japan. It's also proof that there are plenty of committed gamers with a 3DS, as the series still offers one of the most demanding, immersive experiences available.
Nintendo has been marketing the game heavily in the West, and the company's UK arm has now launched a series of video guides to help you master specific monsters. It all kicks off with relatively easy prey, but ends with the fairly intimidating Gore Magala.
Let us know if these are any help, and don't forget to check out our guide to getting the most out of Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate.

This is the first monster hunter game I've picked up and I must say it's absolutely fantastic. Definitely a time travel game in that I pick up my 3ds and next thing I know houra have passed!
@Djreisat
Welcome to the guild 😉
The game is amazing and it is nice that Nintendo has uploaded video guides. Would be nice for beginners.
Gore Magala is somewhat of a pain though, less in solo player where he is a breeze but less so in Guild where is buffed.
Just one annoyance: no keyboard chatting during quest >.<
Give me a damn MH4 3ds Nintendo!
I can't heap enough praise on this game. It's just exceptional. I always said 3 Ultimate was my favorite video game of all time, and I see no reason why this game shouldn't be touted as better than 3 Ultimate.
already 10 hours in and I'm loving every second of it!
When is @Nintendolife going to set up some community hunts?!?
I can't beat that gore magala for the life of me. Really enjoying the demo. I'd get the full version physically if I could find it. I'd get the downloadable version if i didnt think there'd be another one next year.
I need help with charge blade since its completly new and complicated weapon for me.
@Justaguest That my main for now. Took a while to get it down but really a great weapon. Practice against a G. Jaggi.
It's nice that Nintendo is giving some tips for new players, everyone should definitely check this game out if it somewhat interests you.
@Justaguest sign up for a hr1 quest for your weapon. They'll let you train against a great jaggi in an arena. Worked like a charm for me.
The Monster Hunter series in particular can be fairly tough to get into unless you at least understand the basics. I remember when my parents bought me the original Monster Hunter for ps2 back in the day and I was so confused that I gave up after a few hours in and never played it again. Then once I saw that Monster Hunter Tri for Wii was cheap I decided that I would give the series another go and I ended up loving it and have been a big fan of the series ever since! Wouldn't have been possible without the guidance of Tri's online community so I thank them for that!
@super08mario
There won't be another one next year. In fact, it may be a good 4-5 years before we see another Monster Hunter game. They traditionally release the next numbered iteration, then follow a year later with the ultimate edition. But after the ultimate edition it's usually a good 4 to 5 years before the next numbered entry. It just seemed like a short time for us between MH3U and MH4U because they localized 3 Ultimate so late in the game, then brought 4 Ultimate to the west almost immediately after the Japanese launch.
So yeah, dig right in. This is going to be the only Monster Hunter the rest of the generation, unless by some wild chance we get a port of the MMO version on Wii U, which I highly, highly doubt.
Can I post a link to a beginners guide from Pro Jared here? I feel it's excellent information to supplement what's already been provided through Nintendo Life.

And his review also provides a good breakdown of the progression blueprint

@JaxonH thank you! It makes total sense now. I'll download it right now . That's the reason why i have pokemon physically cuz we will probably get a new one this year but seeing as though this game will last a while I'll jump on.
@super08mario
Excellent, welcome to the club! And it does feel like an exclusive club for those of us MH fans. Little advice- stick with it, keep learning, Google everything, hunt with a mentor who can show you the ropes, and try watching that video I linked above.
We'll see you online in the community hunts then hopefully!
I'll definitely check out those videos soon. Thanks again! The online in the demo is fun so i have really high hopes.
MHTri was my first taste with the franchise and after the insane amount of hours I put into it I came out claiming MH as my favorite IP. Now, after trying real hard with 4U, I just can't seem to hold interest in it for some reason. I am currently finding more motivation to want to play a relaxing game like Pokemon Shuffle then MH and this saddens me. It must be getting close for me to consider putting down the D-Pad for good, I think.
50 hours in
I just love it..!!! 70+ hours.. RC7!!
Shagaru Magala 2easy4U. 4U? Get it? sarcastic clap.
@Justaguest check out gaijin hunters video on the charge blade. very helpful
@LasermasterA I have found the Gore grand but I am only HR 5 I look forward to testing myself against the Gore in G rank. I really miss in hunt chats as well. It was easier to help/be helped and easier to create on the spot strategies.
Man its great seeing a lot of new players coming into this franchise. I been a fan since the first game and have had so much fun seeing it grow in game mechanics and in popularity ^_^.
@AceTrainerBean
And sometimes plain funny with jokes and whatnot. Now hunts are just business.
