It's Monday again, but it's time to turn that frown upside down as we have the European Nintendo Download Update, promising some goodies for later in the week. We have a dual Wii U and 3DS release published by Atlus, three Donkey Kong games including one of the last generation's best platformers and more tempting options and discounts. Let's get to the details.
Wii U eShop
Citizens of Earth (Atlus, €9.59 / £7.99 until 29th January, then €11.99 / £9.99) - Originally a promising Kickstarter campaign that fell short, this project by Eden Industries was then picked up by Atlus. With a charming visual style and humorous approach, this RPG has you gather civilians to assist you, the Vice President of the World. It looks wacky and full of potential, and we'll let you know what we think in our review.
Donkey Kong Country Returns (Nintendo, €9.99 / £8.99 until 29th January, then €19.99 / £17.99) - One of the Wii's finest platformers, this was a triumphant revival of the franchise by Retro Studios, with gorgeous visuals and impressive mechanics coming to the fore. It's also a real challenge, and we gave this a glowing recommendation in our Donkey Kong Country Returns review.
Wii U Virtual Console
DK: King of Swing (Nintendo, €6.99 / £6.29) - The latest Game Boy Advance title to make its way to Wii U, this is one of the quirkiest games featuring Nintendo's smiling, tie-wearing ape. Adopting ideas well-known from Clu Clu Land, you swing between pegs with the shoulder buttons to traverse tricky stages and tackle enemies. It can take some getting used to, but we certainly saw its merits in our DK: King of Swing review.
Donkey Kong Jr. Math (Nintendo, €4.99 / £3.49) - From back in the day when Nintendo was more than happy to serve up edutainment with its big-brands, this incorporates number crunching into retro vine swinging shenanigans. We didn't think it all added up in our Donkey Kong Jr. Math review, either - this is the US version of the game.
Wii U eShop Temporary Discounts
Super Toy Cars (Eclipse Games, €3.99 / £3.49 until 29th January, normally €7.99 / £6.99)
99Moves (EnjoyUp Games, €1.49 / £1.34 until 12th February, normally €2.49 / £2.29)
Abyss (EnjoyUp Games, €1.49 / £1.34 until 12th February, €1.99 / £1.79)
BLOK DROP U (RCMADIAX, €0.99 / £0.79 until 18th March, normally €1.49 / £1.29)
Van Helsing sniper Zx100 (EnjoyUp Games, €0.99 / £0.99 until 4th February, normally €6.66 / £6.66)
3DS eShop
Citizens of Earth (Atlus, €9.59 / £7.99 until 29th January, then €11.99 / £9.99) - The same game as on Wii U but on the go.
Hazumi (Gamelion Studios, €3.99 / £3.20) - A breakout hit in multiple ways, this is a clever twist on block breaking that fits the portable system rather well. As much a puzzle game as a block-breaker, you take control of the ball in motion and try to manoeuvre through over 100 stages, with a fairly stiff level of challenge. You can read our recommendation in our Hazumi review.
3DS Retail Download
Big Hero 6: Battle In The Bay (Avanquest, €34.99 / £29.99)
Wii U / 3DS Promotion
Citizens of Earth (Atlus, get a second copy for less on your other Nintendo system if you already own the game on the same Network ID on 3DS or Wii U, €7.19 / £5.99 until 29th January)
3DS eShop Temporary Discounts
Shin Megami Tensei IV (Atlus, €12.99 / £11.69 until 29th January, normally €19.99 / £17.99)
Conception II: Children of the Seven Stars (Nintendo, €14.99 / £13.49 until 29th January, normally €29.99 / £24.99)
3DS HOME Themes
NES Ice Climbers (Nintendo, €1.99 / £1.79)
NES Pit (Nintendo, €1.99 / £1.79)
NES Donkey Kong (Nintendo, €1.99 / £1.79)

DKCR!
Nothing for me this week. DKCR is surely quite good, but I have the original. Plus, I didn't even download SMG2 the week before, as I would need to buy a new eShop card for it and in spite of the seductive price, I have so many other games waiting to be played...).
DK King of Swing was quite nice when I played it briefly a decade ago, but even 7 euro seem a bit expensive for it for me personally...
Quirky Earthbound inspired RPG on the 3DS? I know what I'm getting.
This is probably a very unpopular opinion, but I actually hate Donkey Kong Country Returns. It's only challenging because of how unfair it is. There's only one animal friend (Rambi), there are no water levels (best thing about the originals), and there's an entire world of mine cart stages. A lot of people love the game but I just don't see the appeal of rage.
Shin Megami Tensei sounds like a steal at that price O_O; But I got to deal with too many RPGs lately and still have a couple not started yet, I will have to skip this one for my own sake XD
No 3DS 3D Classic? Was hoping for Outrun
nothin really
Van Helsing's on the Wii U too now?
after last week I am glad there is nothing for me this week lol. Must have spent lots on the eshop the last two weeks
Waiting for Prime next week
Still waiting for the Sega themes, where are those!?
There's so many already in the Japanese 3DS theme shop and those are all so good looking!
@alLabouTandroiD Yeah that's a 3DS game isn't it?
@Kat I didn't like it either, but mostly for the stupid waggle controls.
Nothing for me this week, aside from maybe Citizens of Earth, depending on how it fares review wise. The Wii U needs more RPGs! And it resembles Earthbound which is a plus!
I don't see the point in having DKCR when we already have Tropical Freeze which is superior in EVERY way.
Also, an educational game? Really Nintendo? Of all the games missing on the Virtual Console, that's the best you can do? Why not release Mario's Missing while you're at it!
Nothing for me this week.I might have been tempted to get DKR if they had added Gamepad control but it's not been that long since I went through it.I think I'll just wait and get DKRTF when I finish up what I'm currently playing.Metroid Trilogy next week is a certainty though.Citizens of Earth looks nice enough but I didn't like Earthbound so I can't see me enjoying this any more.I'll wait for the reviews and see how it turns out.
Oh dear, temptations. May pick up SMT IV and perhaps Citizens of Earth (need to research the game first).
SMT IV for sure. I'd have got Conception II as well but it was cheaper on a recent PSN sale.
I'll pick up DKCR (already own on disc) and DK King of Swing (lost my GBA cartridge a long time ago). This is massively trolling American fans though, they don't even have the DKC/DKL trilogy and yet they're not getting DKCR this week either.
Waiting for Metroid Trilogy next week!
I'm finding myself wanting these wii releases while they are cheap even though I have them on disc. I think I'm going crazy. Definitely picking up metroid next week. Might try sell my disc copy if it's still worth anything.
@conman2012 me too, never played them. I hear echoes is hella hard!
@Ootfan98 yeah me too. Been waiting for that for months!
I knew being too busy to get SMTIV would pay off. Shame the differential is being spent on the Theathrhythm DLC songs out that day too (that is one I don't like about these PR, they normally don't list DLC).
Also I'm most surprised DK Jr. Math(s) wasn't yet out in Europe.
I will too say that I am waiting for Metroid Prime Trilogy. €10 for such a game is a no-brainer.
I'd have bought DKCR if it had incorporated proper Gamepad or Classic Controller Pro controls, but I've still got it on disc anyway and as much as I enjoyed the level designs, I absolutely HATED the enforced 'waggle' controls for doing Donkey's roll attack...it was very nearly a game breaker for me the first time around.
Not even going to bother with Metroid next week, but again I've got it on disc anyway...if it's not been enhanced in any way and it's just the original Wii version booting in original Wii mode, what's the point of spending even more money on it? Superb trilogy for anyone who doesn't already own it though, and the nunchuck/wiimote controls really add to the first 2 games.
This week I'll probably grab Citizens Of Earth (Wii U), and DK: King Of Swing a little further down the line...never played it, but I have played DK: Jungle Climber on the DS which was a direct sequel to it (I think?) and that was really good.
Does DKCR support classic controllers (and thus, the gamepad) or is the "waggle mote" really the only way to play ?
@Einherjar nope, which is why I'm not getting it. I can't be bothered to charge a Wii remote to play a game that should be playable with a pro controller.
What's wrong with charging a wii remote and play a game? It's not like you have to dig the earth for 90 days non stop. You just open the cover and place 2 batteries.
Bruh.. SMTIV..
My patience has paid off.
Yeah I'm not triple dipping on DKCR. The original was so damn tough I was only able to beat it on 3DS.
@Cosats lol, for me, it would be good to allow classic control for off TV play. On a plus side, as these are digital downloads, there's always a chance of a later update if enough people complain. For games like DKC, I think playing with Wiimote is not adding much over a standard controller (SMG2 and Metoid benefit from Wiimote)
If Citizens of Earth is really good, then I'll get it. SMTIV, ehhh maybe. Probably won't get anything this week. Was hoping for some C-Stick games, but they don't exist I guess. I'll wait for Iron Fall.
DK: King of Swing for sure, and maybe SMT IV.
SMT 4 for sure, but Citizens is also tempting.
@Grumblevolcano I'm starting to wonder if there is a legal reason for the dk / us situation......seems more than just strange now!! I'm in the UK so I CAN buy them but the only thing I can think of for such a massive delay is legal/copyright problems-probably to do with all of the games not out in the state's feature diddy Kong who rare have some rights over!?!
My first thought upon seeing the Ctizens of Earth screen shot was: Ooooh! "Zombies Ate My Neighbor"!, then I was sad.
Actually getting tired now of coming on these articles to see if Shantae will EVER be released here in the UK.
@NaughtyOttsel22
Pretty much me for several years until we finally got Cave Story on the eShop.
We never even got the DSiWare version.
Isn't Donkey Kong Country Returns basically the EXACT same game as the Wii U version ?
This is the third time that this game has been released in the past five years; yet, everyone is still begging for it. I'm fine with my 3D version, thank you.
@XyVoX You're thinking of Tropical Freeze. Tropical Freeze is the sequel of Returns.
Yeah Tropical Freeze isn't that the same game as the Wii version just HD'd up ?
@XyVoX No. Completely different games. Both are very good though. Freeze is way better in every aspect if you have to choose.
I would pick up Returns if I wasn't in NA and didn't already own the original. Although, if you don't like a challenge, don't get it. I think the difficulty scares off some people. I never thought it felt cheap or impossible. I personally would rather play a game that when completed, you have a real sense of accomplishment instead of the feeling that I basically just played a movie!
Puzzle fans, don't let Hazumi pass you by. It's an awesome game!
Shout out as well to Super Toy Cars going on sale, that one was pretty cool even if the handling was a bit strange at first.
DKC Returns worth it if I already have the 3DS version? Haven't even played the 3DS version tbh, so if there's no difference beyond playing it on the big screen I'll pass.
@MetalGear_Yoshi The 3DS version has more levels and the option to have 3 hearts instead of just 2. The Wii version has slightly better textures and a higher frame rate.
http://www.mariowiki.com/Donkey_Kong_Country_Returns_3D#Differences_and_Additions
In other words, getting the Wii version is probably not worth it if you already have DKCR3D.
Hmm im tempted to get smt iv at that price, although I was going to buy the usa version now we've got a way to play imports
I'll be getting Hazumi, SMT IV, Citizens of Earth (No idea if on 3DS, Wii U or Vita yet) and maybe Donkey Kong Country Returns if it's playable without Wiimote. There goes my New Year's resolution to buy less games this year.
Never played DKCR on Wii so being able to pick it up for £9 is good for me. As much as people think these eshop releases of Wii games is not as good as releasing GCN or N64 games, I actually did miss out on a lot of Wii games as I wasn't playing games much back then as I was taking a bit of a break then. Despite this, I do cry out for N64 virtual console games every week!
It's giving me the opportunity to play some games I missed out on and get them cheaper than I would have paid for a physical copy, especially the Nintendo franchise titles which are higher priced than the 3rd party titles. Looking forward to Kirby Return to Dreamland which is rare and pricey.
@Fidu Thank you for the response, think I'll save my money. I love me some DK but I think I'd prefer to play it on 3DS than with the Wiimote. Plus I gotta get SMG 2 and then Metroid trilogy
@Ootfan98 Sega stated those would be 1 a month.
Does anyone here know if the Wii games run on the Wii mode?
I am so getting that NES DK theme when it arrives here
Never picked up Donkey Kong Returns, this is certainly a good incentive to do so!
Also hot DAMN! I forgot SMT IV had even made it to Europe and at that price I'm going to have to go for it ; )
nice price tag for Shin Megami Tensei IV!
@Hero-of-WiiU
They are booted from the Wii U menu, if that's the question
Was waiting for a SMT IV sale. It's finally mine!
@BakaKnight
I am not too keen on what the conversions are but anything under $20 is an absolute steal. I paid full price day one and still feel like I got my money's worth.
@Ootfan98 OutRun is coming out in March
I'm very sad to read that they didn't add proper controls to DKCR. Such a bummer.
Oh well, I guess I'm not getting it should it ever come to the Americas. I have DKCR3D on my 3DS, but I was really looking forward to playing it on the big screen as it was originally meant to be played.
I'm not really sure which version of Citizens of the Earth I'll get. Got Shovel Knight on Wii U, so might get CotE on 3ds.
@Grumblevolcano Punch Out wii is better than dkcr in my opinion.
For puns sake,It really knocks Dkcr out cold,in terms of fun.
Can't wait for Outrun!!!! Sega please please jump on wii u vc already!!!!!
@Sean_Aaron I guess we'll have to wait 'til Thursday to be entirely sure.
I also wonder if something like a "Theme Flatrate" would make sense for Nintendo. I mean i'm probably never going to download an individual Theme, but with the random feature of the 3DS i most likely wouldn't mind paying up to 15€ for a meaty pack of 'em per year.
I checked Citizen of Earth, but i will also buy SMT IV and Hazumi, most probably. Very nice week.
Hi guys! I know Hazumi is probably nothing special compared to Smash Bros or Mario and you wished for a really cool stuff this week.
Anyway please give it a try. By giving a try I literally mean, downloading it right now and playing. Without waiting till thursday, for free.
Here are some codes for you guys. They work with European eShop!

Have fun and share your experiences, thx!
Don't wait till 22nd JAN!
@EyeCancer_Games Got the fourth one, thank you very much
@EyeCancer_Games Thanks a lot! Got fifth code
@EyeCancer_Games WOW thats a right result thought i'd just missed out on the fifth code so went back and checked the third code and it worked so many thx
@Kat I also cannot see the appeal of rage. But I touhgt the game was good nevertheless, liked my time with it. When I started to die a lot and the rage started building up I normally changed game. Usually to Muramasa or Metroid Prime Trilogy. Nice times.
@EyeCancer_Games Wow!! Didn't manage to grab a code but giving them out like that is extremely commendable! Will be picking up a copy tomorrow! Best of luck in future projects, I'll be keeping an eye out ^^
SMT IV is only 13 euros? soooo going to get that game!
Was considering DKCR, but then I decided I'll wait a while. Recently bought Tropical Freeze, so that DK Country game will have to do for now. Besides, the Metroid Prime trilogy releases next week, so I'm saving my money and time for that game/those games instead.
When do the sales go live?
Can donkey kong returns be played using the gamepad controller?
