People were confused at the beginning of super metroid; There was what looked like a crawlspace, and samus could crouch down. So people were assuming there was a way to make her crawl, oblivious to the morph ball ability that they had to obtain to progress.

As soon as I saw the title I was expected them to show a Metroid trying to crawl but failing. XD

But Zero Suit Samus Can crawl!

The American trophy for the Pokémon Trainer says "in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, he wanted to be the very best - like no-one ever was. To smash them was his real test, to launch them was his cause!" Pretty awesome!

I think it's more of a coincidence than a nod and a very vague one. Samus has to crouch before morphing. If she couldn't morph, she would have to crawl to move after crouching. It sounds to me like a logical way to describe the varia suit morphing ball ability. Besides, you have to be a real noob to call Samus, Metroid. When I read that stupid meme, all I could imagine was a "Metroid" trying to crawl with its claws. Bravo? For the game, but not for this nod, IF it is a nod.

Samus couldn't even crouch in the original Metroid for NES, could she? She just sort of transformed into Morph Ball form and plopped down. Crouching was a luxury which came later on.

Wasn't the original reason for the morph ball was because it was easier to deal with in terms of execution than crawling for the original Metroid?

But I don't get it. Isn't the Varia Suit originally used as means of stronger armor? Even with the Zero Suit or Power Suit, She can still morph into a ball by just getting the morph ball......

It's because Samus is so sophisticated (not sure about the term or I just can't find the right one) that wearing that baddonkey suit and crawling is not cool.

@Artwark Not as Zero Suit but otherwise you are correct (Varia Suit is also for extreme temperatures protection).

@ThomasBW84 The original purpose of the Morph Ball was to replace a crawling animation since they couldn’t make it work in the NES (I don't think it has anything to do with a meme).

I think what's funnier is the original Pokemon TV show referenced in Pokemon Trainer's Trophy description:

This was much funnier when it was new, I remember reading that post before it became a semi-Meme and kinda felt bad for the kid who posted it, but it's still cool to see that Nintendo recognizes what's going on in Miiverse.

I liked Cream the Rabbit's trophy description saying that it makes them want a cream cheese bagel.

Obviously the guy from Miiverse (Pauly) was joking. He called the Metroids "Samus", so, he knew who Samus and what a Metroid was from the very beginning. Still a cool wink there from Nintendo. What is even funnier is that only half the people here seems to get the joke

whatev, in the original nes game you turn into a ball long before you get the varia suit, and it has nothing to do with balling up in any metroid game as far as i know. you either start with the ability or you get it straight away.

Metroid can't crawl cause they fly around with big white teeth and red balls for brains while looking like a cheap knock-off enemy from Kid Icarus: Uprising.

I noticed this last night. Hah hah, nice Nintendo!

With a suit like that, it would be a waste to crawl. It's would be like having the ability to float but choosing to walk instead.
