This weekend brought us the Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS National Open Tournament in the US, in which the Nintendo World store in New York hosted a little under four hours of battles in the latest release. The competitors had all won through from regional events to compete for the National title.
With plenty of spectators watching and Bill Trinen joining the commentary team, a series of 1v1 battles — with just the occasional Smash Ball thrown in — determined the final pairing. We won't spoil the winner here if you didn't watch it live on Nintendo's channels, but the full event is below.
If you want to see the concluding battles — as 4 hours is a long time, then skip ahead to the last 20 minutes.

Nice!
I was in the very first match of the tourney. I wont lie, I'm kind of a bit bitter that of all the stages to fight a Kirby in (I was ready for just about any character and stage BUT him and Paper Mario). Especially considering it seemed that most of the following matches had decent platforms and/or little transition.
Salty Johning aside though, it was an overall fun time, watching the matches were pretty hype, and if Nintendo ever hosts another tourney, I hope I can make it to the Nationals again! Fingers crossed for Wii U Open
I would love to join a super smash bros tourney, I wish I could have come.
As much as I wanted to enter this, I was not going to brave a crowd even denser than the ones at Best Buy's Smash Fest, especially if I wasn't one of the first 128 or so there.
I happened across a link to this & managed to watch the last 3 matches live which was pretty neat. Amazing gameplay by all, well done!
Crap, I forgot all about that. Wish I remembered sooner that way I could of seen it in person.

I have to agree with you, that was a pretty rough matchup. Especially that bowser castle transition with no ledges to grab in the center. All things considered you still put up a really good fight.
It's a shame that a "national" tournament only included maybe a dozen stores in a handful of states to qualify. There was nothing within a couple hundred miles of where I lived. I can almost bet that most of those players aren't even close to the "best in the nation"
Stopped watching when the Rules were posted "Smash Balls and custom equipment allowed".
Lol at the sad Twitch viewers calling it "casual" since it wasn't Fox V.S Falco 24/7. I saw about an hour of the tournament. It was pretty good IMO.

Your lost though, overall it was awesome, final smashes where wasted most of the time and the custom moves actually improved the viability of some characters like Ganondorf for example.
The final was only 4 stocks in FD style stages (omega form) without time limit or Smash ball.
Meh these Nintendo oficial Smash tournaments are so boring to watch... Like if the players weren't skilled enough... Well the game just came out, seems like I have to wait for better tournaments.
Someone called Giga Mac, Big Mac. lol
I bet you a million bucks that if I was there I would be the winner. Yep yep yep.
Ah, it would have been great to compete in the closest one near me. Gah, curse those "first come, first serve" rules!
I swear, I'll be there plenty of hours earlier if they do one for the Wii U version. I think I could have at least survived a good while before I lose.
How did that mario player get to the final match? He sucked at recovering. If he knows his recovery is really bad, he shouldn't try and do ledge guarding/off stage tactics. So many DUMB decisions in the final match on mario's part it was painful to watch.
Really enjoyed that. It looks so cool when they battle, but I just fail whenever I go one-on-one online
