While it may pain millions of Nintendo fans around the world to hear it again, the New Nintendo 3DS arrives in Japan on 11th October — it then makes its way to Australia and New Zealand on 21st November.
As a result Nintendo is stepping up its marketing efforts, including some particularly colourful and charming TV commercials; that means demo units and pre-orders in stores, which gives us more opportunities to have another look at the upcoming hardware.
Familiar Twitter user @cheesemeister3k — often a useful source for translating Japanese broadcasts — has been in a local store and come across a demo unit for the New Nintendo 3DS, while also snapping some pictures of the pre-order packaging.
It's all looking good with these New 3DS models. Are you excited about these coming West?

You'd better believe I'm excited, I'm already researching how to import one of the Australian New 3DS systems that launches November 21st.
The two sites I'm keeping an eye on right now are Play-asia.com, and 365games.co.uk which is the sister site to ozgameshop.com.
Looking good. Here's hoping Nintendo irons out my gripes with the OS in future system updates and I'm sold.
Want one now. I wish I didn't have to wait. I'm giving my daughter my Pokemon XL so I'm in the market for a new one for me. I just can't wait until sometime next year to get a new one.
grabs passport I'll be right back...
I still can't decide which one to get. I love the big screens but I love the faceplates too. Can someone please decide for me?
Believe me if I could, I would move to Japan.
I will get the white 3DS first and wait for a limited edition XL when it comes to Europe.
I've watched a Bayo2 gameplay (Japan version) but voices and texts are in English. Does that mean you can change Japanese 3DS language to English?
I seriously hope White Regular-sized New 3DS comes to America. That's the one I want.
0.0% chance Reggie will release a white version in North America.
AAAAAGH! Why do we have to wait so long! Ugh...guess I'll just have to wait a little bit longer...also, is there going to be a New 3DS XL? I'm curious.
Hnnngggh.
Seriously, that New 3DS is going to suck my wallet out of my money...if I wasn't going to buy a Wii U.
Why can't the Wii U be this beautiful?
Cannot. stop. GAWKING.
I'm probably going to import from Australia as I am PAL anyway.
Wow. Can't wait for it to come here.
I so want one of these!! I'm in the market for an upgrade from the 2011 original 3DS. It's starting to look tatty.
I'm dying to have one. I just got smash and have to say the characters are tiny on the screen! I really need the XL version! Too bad they couldn't release it this fall!
Looking awesome, I'll be pre-ordering mine soon once the NA launch is near.
@Jake_homs Look at it not as agony, but as extra time to make up your mind which one you want!
Sorry, Dr. Phil is on TV, i think it's messing with my head... @_@
Pre ordered a New LL Metallic Black from Japan, very good price too.. Already have a Japanese White LL so I just need to wait a couple of weeks for it to arrive and then get through a system transfer in Japanese!
The hype meter just went through the roof for me! Gimme gimme gimme!
I've Gawked, now I feel worse.
Where do I slide my credit card on my labtop???
Dang they things are beautiful!!
When are these coming to the US? I might break down and get a GameStop credit card if I don't have the funds.
so ex cited!!!!!!!! SQUEEEE
If I were to get one, I would get the normal sized one. The addition of custom faceplates is the most genious thing they added to it.
@jjmesa16 It depends. If you like pulling a DS out of your pocket, playing for a few minutes, and then wrapping up, go with the 3DS. If you like to sit down at a cafe, order something, and stay there for half an hour, go with the XL.
The Metallic Black XL would fit with my black and LED green desk. Unless Razer releases a faceplate, no N3DS for me.
Is may just be me but until they actually announce a couple more games for this thing that take advantage of the CPU, I'm not that fussed about it.
Willing to bet they announce it in Jan for release in March-April for the West. Possibly with Majora, Metroid, or a Pikmin port.
The close up image of the black 3DS showing the buttons really makes me want one of these New 3DS systems. It just looks so cool.
I'm looking at preordering one before its release, but it's a tough decision choosing between either white or white. My friend's going to Japan this month, and he might even be able to bring back some Japanese-exclusive Cover Plates for me. Hopefully they're not region-locked!
Between this, my Christmas shopping and the new D&D core rulebooks (in addition to anything else which happens to pop-up), my poor wallet will be weeping for months! D:
@NintendoFan64 Yes, there will be a New Nintendo 3DS XL; in fact, it releases on the same day as the standard model.
Their packaging is so much more interesting than what we get in North America.
I hope data transfer will be somewhat simpler, and that I don't have to buy another 32gb SD card to transfer my stuff to ;-;
This and the fact that I don't have a Wii U yet means my wallet will be considerably lighter...
I just noticed that the Super Nintendo-inspired buttons are more prominent on the black console. Too bad Australia only has a choice of white at launch, but at least we're lucky that we'll be getting it months before the rest of the world. Besides, white was my first choice anyway.
I'm in Japan right now! The new consoles are awesome! The new 3d viewing is fantastic and the c-sick (sic) is superb to use!
I've already got a 3DS XL and a 3DS LL, but I'm sooo tempted to pick up a regular New 3DS. They're so fluffy I'm gonna die! That they're available here in November just...argh.
Must. Resist!
I'm going to get the small one first and wait for a limited edition xl to come out!
I'll be four years late to th 3DS party when these come out in Europe, but I'm getting one of the small ones. The improved camera quality and other little bits have me convinced. Only thing I miss is the snazzy clear outer coating the regular size 3DS used to come with. It goes a long way in preventing the system from looking worn too quickly.
I want one. Like now. (Oh, and probably the XL version.)
Do want. Unsure if I want a normal or XL.. Guess it depends if the visuals on the XL look blurry compared to on the normal..
Also if we get a XL Xenoblade Limited Edition, I will be all over it.
I want the black xl one
I really want to know if the new 3ds removes the 300 game download limit. My current 3ds is almost full even though my sd still has plenty of room. I wonder if we can get some confirmation.
@jjmesa16 If you buy the New 3DS, you can customise it any way you want with all the cool faceplates. If you buy New 3DS XL, you can enjoy games on a bigger screen. My opinion is, buy the New 3DS. I would because I always like customising my Nintendo systems, but I do not like putting stickers that are hard to remove. Besides, I prefer a smaller 3D screen because the 3D focus looks more accurate and the pixels of most games don't look stretched. I owned a Nintendo 3DS (I still have it, but I broke it's ribbon cable from flipping it so hard in the AR fishing game) and I played demos on the 3DS XL, but I think when it comes to display, it is better to play games on a screen that the game was originally developed for. I saw Diddy Kong racing on Nintendo 64 as a demo on a flatscreen in Gametraders (an Australian merchandise and retro games and consoles store), and the display was so blurry, I could rarely recognise any character in what I think was the character selection screen. So New 3DS is my recommendation to you. Hope this helps.
@Spaceboy40 Probably not. If so, Nintendo would announce it by now since the New 3DS and New 3DS XL are almost released in Japan. But maybe they might have an update to this for all 3DS systems, like how they removed the 5 data transfer maximum.
@cfgk24 Does the 3D only work better when looking on a side-to-side view, or also an up-and-down view? I guess I will have to wait when the demos come out to EB games (which I believe is the Australian version of Gamestop, but I never went to Gamestop in America), and they said that it should have demos at the time of release. They also allow pre-orders now too. But I want to wait until next year to get mine when they become cheaper at other retail store like Big W.
@GamerZack87 If you live in Europe, you can demand your friend to buy a New 3DS or New 3DS system for you (just kidding, although now you'll have to buy Japanese games to play), so you can buy any European game you want and play it. And unluckily for you, faceplates are region locked. They have a different screw hole in the shape of circle D:
@FrankieC6421 Yeah it seems to be the consensus that the new 3DS is better than th XL so, I think that's what I'll end up getting. I've never had a customized/decal 3DS before so it would be cool to get something different for a change. I have owned my 3DS XL since it released and love the big screens but it's disappointing that they are same resolution of the small 3DS. Also the new 3DS has enlarged displays which should make it better for longer periods of gaming. I can't wait until they come out but unfortunately I have to get a 3DS XL now that way I can enjoy so smash. My current one is broken.
@FrankieC6421 I live in Australia, so I won't need to wait too long for New Nintendo 3DS's release.
@StephenYap3 @OneBagTravel I heard it's actually the black one that won't come to America (not sure about Europe, though).
@jjmesa16
The faceplates are really just a fad in my opinion, and if you've used an XL / LL before you may miss the large screens. If you've not, you should probably consider the smaller model, but keep in mind that big screens are something to consider as they really make a difference to play. The smaller model does have slightly larger screens than the original, though. I would say that if you really like big screens (or really really want them) it might be difficult to go to a smaller model, but if your heart is set on faceplates get the smaller version.
@jjmesa16 That sucks. Mine is broken too. It has been since 20th June 2013. I still have in in my drawer and nobody in my family knows what I did with it. I flipped it WAY too much and the ribbon cable snaps. New 3DS would be better than 3DS so my top screen won't get scratched from the bottom screen
@GamerZack87 Cool. I want to play the demos at EB Games when they release. I would go to PAX, but I live in Brisbane, so I just ought to wait. Besides, I will be waiting to get mine next year when it gets cheaper or has a special bundle. It would be great if Pokémon Omega Ruby or Alpha Sapphire bundled with New 3DS with Ruby or Sapphire faceplates.
I would like this especially if Nintendo made a complete remake of Super Mario 3D World for New Nintendo 3DS with the same graphics as Super Mario 3D Land. They could get the bottom screen to display silhouettes of touchable objects in the levels like Nintendogs + Cats. And the controls are exactly like Wii U. It should be called 'Super Mario 3D World for New Nintendo 3DS'. If the 3D is super stable and can be viewed from any angle, it would be cool to use the gyroscope to control the in-game camera. The game could be an exact remake if they can put it in at least a 3GB game card, since New 3DS is faster and more powerful.
And make Pokémon Z for Wii U. And a new Nintendogs + Cats for Wii U too, with realistic HD graphics and the feel of having a virtual pet on the big screen in your living room.
We are lucky to get these new 3DS systems early because North America DID get Photos With Mario and us Australians don't. I want Photos With Mario. I want the Mario theme faceplate and Mario themed Home Menu.
@FrankieC6421 That sounds way worse than mine. Technically mine is not totally broken like yours. Mine is still playable but there is a huge black spot, probably liquid or dead pixels, that somewhat blocks the gameplay. It also has two big cracks inside the display. They are about the size and position of the face of Villager when he wins in Super Smash Bros. What happened is it was under the couch, I reclined the couch and it crushed the top screen.
@jjmesa16 If I want to turn it on, I have to make the top part half way less than halfway closed to turn it on. I tried to take it out to order a replacement, but I gave up because it was too complicated. I ended up disconnecting the camera. So I decided to back up all photos and music from the SD card to my computer and format the data if I am never going to use it again. I also deleted all the data of my games (although I only bought Super Mario 3D Land and Sonic Generations) but Super Mario 3D Land won't take long to complete. 1 week I guess. I am waiting to get New 3DS next year when it gets cheaper at Big W. I bought my DSi there 19 days after the release (when it was $299) and I got mine for $288. What a bargain (I used the remaining $11 to buy Subway).
@OneBagTravel 0.0% chance that Tom will release a black version in Australia. Unknown chance that Satoru will release a 2DS in Japan.
well my sis lives in oz so she just preordered me new xl and they will only cost me 130+20 postage so prob save over 50 at current exchange rate so worth doing oh yes plus me being playing it before xmas i hear the envy lol
I'm hoping Nintendo will remake Super Mario Galaxy for the new 3DS. That would be amazing!
@ZenTurtle Thanks for your input. I originally had a 3DS for around 2 years and it was good. I believe that the screen looked better on the small one because of the pixel density. I bought the 3DS XL when it came out because of the size (obviously) which was better for longer durations of gaming. I just don't play as much as I used to and I think the small screens will suffice. Like I said before if Nintendo had upped the screen resolution of the new 3DS XL it would have been a must buy for me.
