The Japanese launch of the New 3DS is just around the corner, and Nintendo is running commercials in its homeland to promote the customisable nature of the system.
The standard New 3DS — not the New 3DS XL — features interchangeable "Kisekae Plate" covers which are sold separately and come in a wide range of eye-catching designs. This bright and breezy commercial showcases some of those designs, along with cameos from plenty of famous Nintendo characters.
The New 3DS hits Japanese retail on October 11th, with the Australian launch coming in November. A wider western release isn't expected until 2015.

Whoever at Nintendo came up with this commercial has just earned my undying love.
wow one of the best nintendo commercials ever. this will make the new 3DS sell really good i think
Why are the covers on a smaller 3DS than on the XL. I don't get it. Will totally not be getting these in favor for the XL.
That hipster Bowser tho!
I don't know but maybe it costs too much. I am getting the smaller one because it looks cooler than the XL. But that is just my opinion.
I keep seeing this popping up everywhere
There's also this web page for it http://www.nintendo.co.jp/3ds/kisekae/index.html#/top
@Porky - On face value I would say b/c they are aiming the 3DS at kids and tweens - notice how Japan never got the 2DS aimed at kids in the west - and the XL is for teens and adults. Even the face buttons are kid colored friendly on the 3DS but grey in the LL.
When the new 3DS was announced the biggest addition to me was the built-in NFC for the amiibo, but considering how few games there are on 3DS - namely 1, SSB for 3DS - which currently doesn't support amiibo - I guess the only thing they really have to sell the new 3DS on is changeable faceplates. So I guess the LL will never get a commercial.
Overall the commerical is a hit, and I know the japanese are collection happy, but having a new 3DS w/ improved insides only to market it with new covers seems a waste. They could have just made these plates into covers for the old 3DS. Though I realize nobody would buy a new 3DS then since covers seems to be it's main selling point. It's only 1 in this commercial. I guess that's why they didn't bother coming up w/ a better name.
haha xD Luigi though. They really know how to exploit the popularity of the death stare.
When it comes overseas, I'll definitely go for the regular N3DS, not the XL. In addition to price, I like the changeable plate covers. Toon Zelda's... dare I say, so kawaii! Bowser's kinda cute in his get-up, check out his neat hair-do; and Luigi just makes me laugh. This commercial should do well in Japan considering.
I'm going to get that white one first and wait for a special edition N3DS XL (Metroid!).
@PLATINUM7 - A lot of acid was dropped during the production of that website.
Bowser looks epic. That needs to be one of his costumes in smash bros
I saw this earlier, amazing.
Toon Link became the Riddler!
Adorable just adorable.
@rjejr Sounds like a great party lol
@rjejr That makes sense. Thanks for taking your time to explain.
I needed to make an avatar out of this. Here's some from the website:

That was honestly one of the best Nintendo adverts I've ever seen. The way how all the Nintendo characters interact with the girl was really cool and very Disney-like.
Kyary Pamyu Pamyu is very silly.
@Shirma_Akayaku OMG Link looks so awesome in that outfit!
@Shirma_Akayaku I'll take Kirby thanks.
Kirby is to cute here.
Toon Link though... As if he wasn't already cool enough. Also, this is one of the best Nintendo commercials I've ever seen!
Those designs are awesome! ....Can we see them as DLC costumes for Smash?
Oh gosh.
@Porky - Your welcome.
This commercial does have some...pizazz. I like it.
@rjejr Too bad the option wasn't at least given. I mean it isn't like us 'boring' adults couldn't keep the dull default shell.
I guess it would eat into the regular-sized one's sales because people would just go for the bigger model, which would be essentially the small + added size(not really that great anyway because the same res is kept); unlike the 2DS' design, the 'kids' model wouldn't have much of an identity, outside of the colored buttons(like you pointed out, but using the old 3DS).
Kyary kyary pamyu + nintendo =
Loving that Jail Pirate Peach. And Mario forgot his pants?
what in the hell is she wearing?
Looks like they're targetting the smaller model at women and children, which probably makes sense since they have smaller hands.
新しい。。。世界。。。lmao, very catchy and the commerical is super-cute.
One of the best commercials that NIntendo has outed in a while. The outfits are so cute!
I'm pretty sure I got diabetis from watching this ad
I love this commercial so much. I need a New 3DS.
Also very nice marketing strategy to feature Kyary Pamyu Pamyu in Japan~
Whoa, this ad is amazing
Uuuugh those faceplates keep confusing me on whether to get the XL or regular sized New 3DS. I had been all prepared to upgrade to an XL, then BAM. Out comes the news of the New 3DS. Nintendo, you're making an indecisive girl's life so difficult. ;^;
What a beautiful commercial. Pikachu looks insanely cute and Samus looks really cool. I guess I'll be getting the New 3DS, I never upgraded to a XL so the change won't feel strange or something.
Luigi had like a death stare but was also happy in the vid...
@Lalivero The option wasn't given, because there still will be themed Special Editions for the XL. The normal 3DS stopped getting those, when the XL was released. Now with the new 3DS they are filling the gap.
OMG that Toon LInk one! O-o
If there's ever dlc in smash bros4 these need to be alternate costumes! Make it happen Nintendo!
hipster bowser
Poor Pikachu, trying to run away from that crap.
I may still hate the New 3DS, but that was an amazing advert! Swanky Toon Link is the best thing to ever happen... next to Hipster Bowser, perhaps.
@OmegaStar I use the term crap loosely
Hipster Koopa... Now I'll have extra incentive to drown him in lava, thanks Nintendo!
i like
Ugh, I just saw this commercial on TV today and it made me sad. Kyary Pamu Pamu is terrible.
I hope that Japanese Kisekae Plates will still fit onto an Aussie New 3DS console, especially since Nippon has a much greater selection than we will.
Also, is anybody else reminiscing about the Game Boy micro?
Why can't we have commercials like that here?
